We're always looking at new ways to approach the 90s, and in the past we've revisited the output from bands and artists that got that start in the 1970s and 80s, like Tom Petty, KISS, Van Halen, and others. At the suggestion of our friend and 80s Metal co-host Chip, we've revamped the format for a fresh start. We kick it off with progressive arena rock veterans Styx, and start by checking out their 70s and 80s greatest hits to re-familiarize ourselves with the songs that became staples on classic rock radio for decades - "Come Sail Away," "Renegade," "Mr. Roboto," "Lady," and many more. Then we check out their 90s releases - the 1990 album Edge of the Century, which did not feature guitarist Tommy Shaw, then guitarist for Damn Yankees, and then their 1999 reunion with Shaw, and last with lead singer/keyboardist Dennis DeYoung, Brave New World. Unlike many of their classic rock peers, Styx managed to score a hit single at the start of the decade with the ballad "Show Me The Way." From their, we catch up with the band and current status to determine if the band thrived in the 90s, merely adapted to the times, or creatively died. Songs In This Episode Intro - Show Me The Way (from Edge of the Century) 7:40 - Blue Collar Man (Long Nights) (from Pieces of Eight) 28:42 - Suite Madame Blue (from Equinox) 38:56 - Back To Chicago (from Edge of the Century) 41.57 - All In A Day's Work (from Edge of the Century) 58:57 - What Have They Done to You (from Brave New World) Outro - Everything Is Cool (from Brave New World) Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Hi everybody, welcome to another episode of The Talk Music Podcast!I'm thrilled to announce my guest is LES STROUD! Best known as the producer, creator and star of the hit TV series SURVIVORMAN, Les is also an accomplished musician/songwriter. His music is a rich tapestry of rock, world, prog rock, folk and blues, and it reflects his deep connection to nature. Steve Vai, Bruce Cockburn, Colin Linden and Slash have all lent Les their musical talents for his recordings. Les has guested on stage with Journey, Alice Cooper, Blues Traveler, Steven Stills, Chicago, Randy Bachman, Tommy Shaw, James Cotton, Dave Mason and Slash (who's latest solo album Les performs on). Les has always operated in two lanes: his Survivorman and music careers, the latter being his most recent focus. His latest album MOTHER EARTH, produced by MIKE CLINK (“Appetite for Destruction” by Guns N' Roses), blew me away. Some song clips are sprinkled throughout. I loved chatting with Les about his beginnings, both our experiences at Fanshawe college, his remarkable journey as a survival expert, and of course his lifelong passion for using music to express his love for our planet. This in-depth chat took place the day after I saw Les perform as a guest on harp at a truly magical Bruce Cockburn concert. Afterwards, surrounded by nature at his well-hidden cottage, we enjoyed a hot sauna, cold beer and a quick dip in the lake. A blissful time I will always remember. Enjoy! Hosted on Acast. Styx is approaching the height of their popularity and a bit of a turning point when they released their ninth studio album, Cornerstone. Keyboardist and vocalist Dennis DeYoung, and lead guitarist and vocalist Tommy Shaw take the lion's share of the songwriting duites, with one or both developing all tracks save one. The lead vocalist duties also alternate between DeYoung and Shaw, again with the sole exception being a song written and sung by guitarist James "JY" Young. This album finds the group shifting from a more prog rock sound to a pop rock orientation. This transition would create a commercial success, with Cornerstone becoming the groups first top 5 album on the US charts - peaking at number 2. The album would produce the groups first and only number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in the power ballad "Babe." It would also be a critical success, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group. Not bad for a self-produced album. The successes, however would be tempered with the first fractures appearing between the group's primary singers and songwriters. Dennis DeYoung wanted to see the group move in a more pop direction, while Tommy Shaw preferred the rock orientation of previous albums. James Young sided with Shaw in this dispute. It would eventually cause a rift in the band in the mid-80's, with Shaw and DeYoung splitting up.Friend of the show Steve Hardin presents this classic rock and pop sensation in today's podcast. Borrowed TimeThe third single from the album was the lead track to side 2. The song is a political one, portraying a United States in trouble, but oblivious to its decline. DeYoung and Shaw co-wrote this song, and Dennis DeYoung takes lead vocal duties on this high energy track.Boat on the RiverThis more folk-oriented tune was a charting single in the UK and hit number 5 on the German charts, but was not released as a single in the US. Tommy Shaw wrote and sings lead on this track, as well as playing mandolin. It began as an experiment when Shaw first acquired a mandolin, but the band thought it sounded good enough to make it on the album. Why MeThe second single was a compromise choice. Originally DeYoung wanted the power ballad "First Time" to be released as the second single, but when Tommy Shaw objected so strenuously to releasing two ballads in a row that he threated to leave the band over it, "Why Me" became the single. Also written and sung by DeYoung, it is about feeling depressed even in the midst of success. BabeThe band's sole number 1 single is a ballad about having to leave the one you love for a period of time. Dennis DeYoung wrote it as a birthday present for his wife Suzanne. Despite its success, it was not originally intended to appear on the album. Tommy Shaw and James Young convinced DeYoung to put it on the album. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Rawhide by the Blues BrothersThe band performs behind a protective fence in a country bar in one scene, and this is the single song from the Country AND Western genre they can play. STAFF PICKS:Mystery Train by UFOWayne launches the staff picks with a cover of a song originally recorded by Junior Parker in 1953. UFO were an English rock band originally formed in 1968. This song is off their eighth studio album which was produced by George Martin of Beatles fame. Love Stinks by the J. Geils BandLynch's staff pick is a description of a love triangle in which no one gets what they want. Lead Singer Peter Wolf was married to actress Faye Dunaway at the time, and was headed towards a divorce which may have inspired the lyrics. Many will remember this song from Adam Sandler's performance in "The Wedding Singer."Even It Up by HeartRob brings us the first single from Heart's fifth studio album, "Bebe le Strange." It features the Tower of Power horn section in the instrumentation. The lyrics call for reciprocity in a relationship, and also a subtle rant against the obstacles women face in the rock world.Run Like Hell by Pink FloydSteve Hardin wraps up the staff picks with a song written by David Gilmour and Roger Waters. The song is used in the film "The Wall" to depict rock anti-hero Pink as a fascist dictator turning the audience into a lynch mob. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Seduction by Giorgio MoroderThis instrumental love theme from the movie "American Gigolo" was on the charts at the time. "Michael Cartellone is more than just a musician. When he is not on tour, he trades his drumsticks for paintbrushes, producing mesmerizing works of art." - Kim I Plyler Michael Cartellone, born June 7, 1962, in Cleveland, Ohio, has had a balanced dual passion for music and art since childhood. He began painting at the age of four and drumming at the age of nine, leading to a professional music career that took off when he played his first bar gig at the age of 11. After many years on the club circuit, Michael moved to New York City at 22, where he performed with notable musicians like Eddie Jobson and Tommy Shaw before joining the multi- platinum band Damn Yankees. Over the years, Michael has recorded and toured with icons such as John Fogerty, Peter Frampton, John Wetton, Freddie Mercury, Cher, Adrian Belew, Accept, and, of course, Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Episode 152 – Styx & Kansas Part 5, 1978 – Pieces of Eight The year 1978 brings us just one offering from Styx, Pieces of Eight. This album was well known for it's monster single Renegade (go Tommy Shaw!!), but the conversation gets a lot deeper. In this episode, the group sifts through often contradictory views of this offering. There should be something for everyone here. The madness comes in for a landing with this, the tenth episode of Regarding Roger. Masters of Digression Chaz and Wolfie go all out in this drain-bamaged diversionary listen-through of the epic classic rock radio track Eclipse, the last track on Dark Side of the Moon. Redux follows suit, and thus we conclude the heavy lifting of season two, listening to Dark Side of The Moon Redux for the listener, so the listener doesn't have to. Join our hosts as they meander through Spotify rankings of Pink Floyd versus so many other artists we forget how many are covered. Chaz raves on and on about Live From Daryl's House, the internet show of Daryl Hall, and convinces Wolfie to get hooked in with Daryl and his friends like Smokey Robinson, Sammy Hagar, Allen Stone, Fitz and the Tantrums, Tommy Shaw, Rick Nielson, Kenny Loggins, CeeLo Greene, Darius Rucker, Train, Rob Thomas, Joe Walsh, Howard Jones, Chromeo, KT Tunstall, Ben Folds, Grace Potter, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Toots and the Maytals, Nick Lowe, the Bacon Brothers…and so many more. Wax nostalgic with Chaz about having Kyra Sedgwick walk across his blanket at a Bacon Brothers concert. Ah, the memories. And yes, we get back to listening to the redux version of Eclipse. We wrap up this listen season with comparisons to season one, what Lulu had going for it that Dark Side of the Moon Redux did not. If there had been more coverage, better press, more content, and greater context shared by the artist would it have been better received? If Roger hadn't tried to sing, if he hadn't added poetry and voiceovers, would it still be something you can listen to? The main question persists…why Roger, why? When the hosts start pining for the improvisational stylings of Metallica and Lou Reed, you know it's about time to wrap it up. Rather, the guys draw it out, going further out on a Rocket to Uranus than they ever have before. New heights in digressionary diversion and pointless nonsense, this episode really captures the essence of our final adjudication of Dark Side of the Moon Redux. Hearing Eclipse delivered with a James Hetfield staccato is worth the price of admission alone. We wrap it up with a bow – here's the message: life ain't all dark. That's the big epiphany of this album – that and we've determined that the answer to life, the universe and everything really is 42. Thanks, Roger, here's your towel. Now…what would Daryl do? Roger – listen to Daryl, he is the king of Redux. Find out for yourself – tune in at Live From Daryl's House.
What a pleasure to have James "JY" Young in the studio to talk all things Styx, and more. The upcoming "Renegades and Juke Box Heroes" tour features Foreigner and John Waite. They'll be playing Pine Knob on June 15th. We talked about a lot of topics. Playing in the band with great musicians like Tommy Shaw, and Lawrence Gowen. Where does Styx live in the music world...Rock or Progressive Rock? JY answers that question. "It's hard to define us because a lot of the stuff is prog. But, ya know, some of the ballads are pretty much straight-ahead rock ballads." That led to how JY got into music. How did the Grunge era affect them? At first, he said "Zero" as far as the music was concerned. But he did say that the band may have seen a dip in concert attendance, but that's passed and now they're selling lots of tickets. Did the Beatles playing on The Ed Sullivan Show influence him? He said they did, but older siblings did too. He expanded on that. What legendary guitarist did he see live five times? I'm not sure if I've ever met anyone who has seen the player so many times. "That's the most profound influence on my playing," he said of the guitarist. I asked him his thoughts on the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame. "Well, I don't know. It's very East Coast-centric for people that have a vote. Styx probably deserves to be in there, but I'm not holding my breath." He didn't mention names, but at the end of the day, he said it's about the fans and music. He spoke of fans telling him about how Styx's music helped them through periods of their lives. "Music affects everyone differently, and we've made some great records." It was a thrill to have JY, and the band's manager, George, in the studio with me. A huge pleasure.

Episode 151 – Styx & Kansas Part 4, 1977 – The Grand Illusion and Point of Know Return The year of 1977 is a huge one in the Styx / Kansas timeline. Point of Know Return is the album that sent Kansas into the stratosphere. With the title track and the timeless Dust In the Wind, Point of Know Return is truly a classic album that you should listen to before you die. The Grand Illusion shows Styx as a band finally showing some of the focus that will define them for the next several years. Another great title track opens the record. Come Sail Away showcases Dennis DeYoung while Fooling Yourself is a Tommy Shaw gem. Songs like Castle Walls have enough hobbit shit to establish Styx's prog cred. This is a great year! Episode 150 – Styx & Kansas Part 3, 1976 – Crystal Ball and Leftoverture In this episode, the group covers 1976 in the combo Styx / Kansas timeline. Crystal Ball sees the introduction of Tommy Shaw to the Styx lineup. Some of the results are immediately remarkable and some of the results are as uneven as the rest of the catalog to this point. Crystal Ball shows a band that is still working to perfect their formula. Leftoverture, on the other hand, is an album for the ages. Kansas were able to craft a timeless classic from a potentially devastating set of circumstances. Leftoverture was the album that broke Kansas as stars and the songs hold up. Enjoy our conversation on these two enjoyable albums from 1976. Episode 149 – Styx & Kansas Part 2, 1975 – Song for America, Masque, and Equinox In this episode, the group covers 1975 in our combined Kansas and Styx timeline with three strong albums. Song for America, the sophomore effort from Kansas, shows a band that is racing ahead in their development behind the strength of the title track and Lamplight Symphony. Masque, Kansas' third record later that year, is another step toward their breakthrough success in 1976. Masque has some of the flaws you would expect from an album produced so quickly after its predecessor, but is a great listen nonetheless. Styx's Equinox is the last album Styx will make before the addition of Tommy Shaw and shows a band still searching for their true identity. The Styx sound is here, but there is still something missing. 1975 was an important year for both of these bands, setting them up for their huge successes. This week get your nerd on with us as we are raiding the Prog Rock crypt again. However, this will be a much different journey into the world of progressiveness, as we are covering Neo-Prog from the early to mid-1980s. A much different time for progressive rock, as these bands were influenced by more than just Genesis, Yes, and King Crimson. These groups were injecting heavy doses of hard rock, new wave, punk, and pop into their progressive Day-Glo soup! Keep an open mind and give it a listen…What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Prog rock in the 60s and 70s initially had mostly classical music and jazz influences, but over the last 40 years it has come to include other fusions of music styles including metal, punk, funk, folk, and electronic. From Zappa and Sgt. Pepper to the 1980s music by bands like Marillion and Pendragon… This is Neo-Prog Rock! Get yer nerd on!Songs this week include:Saga – “Wind Him Up” from Worlds Apart (1981)Twelfth Night – “East Of Eden” from Smiling At Grief (1982)IQ – “The Wake” from The Wake (1985) Pendragon – “Fly High Fall Far” from The Jewel (1985)Gowan – “Keep Up The Fight” from Gowan (1982)It Bites – “All In Red” from The Big Lad In The Windmill (1986)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Episode 157: In Conversation with Lawrence Gowan of Styx (left to right: Lawrence Gowan, Chuck Panozzo, Tommy Shaw, James “JY” Young, Ricky Phillips, Todd Sucherman, Will Evankovich - Photo credit Jason Powell) If you were to guess who Brian and Sarah have seen the most times in concert, you may not come up with the answer right away. The answer is Styx! The Chicago-based group has been a part of Brian and Sarah's musical history for more than 40 years, so imagine how thrilled they were to get a chance to talk with a member of this legendary band! Lawrence Gowan, lead vocalist and keyboard player extraordinaire, was kind enough to take a break during Styx's current tour to chat with Brian and Sarah on a number of topics, including Styx's latest album, 2021's Crash of the Crown; the 2017 concept album The Mission; what led the members of Styx to return to the studio; and what it's like playing these newer songs live. There's also talk of the resurgence of vinyl records, the 2020 “Styx Fix” online shows, and Gowan's solo work and performances, which leads to an eyebrow-raising comment regarding his attire at the non-solo shows. Brian and Sarah had such a great time talking with this kind, funny, and extremely talented musician, and they're sure you'll enjoy listening to this conversation as much as they enjoyed having it!
