Welcome to Manga Monday! This week we're diving into MAD by Yusuke Otori, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi horror running on Shonen Jump+ that plays like Alien meets Chainsaw Man and refuses to let you breathe.Alien life forms have invaded Earth and wiped out most of humanity. John, his sister, and a handful of survivors are just trying to stay alive in a world that has absolutely no interest in letting them. After a fanatical group of soldiers feeds him alien meat, John gains the ability to transform into one of the creatures himself, but at the cost of his own humanity. The art is raw, minimalist, and cinematic, with pages that say nothing and communicate everything. Every time John finds a moment of connection or hope, the story rips it away. It's bleak, it's brutal, and underneath all the body horror and xenomorph energy is a story about what it means to keep surviving when you've already lost every reason to.Seven volumes deep and still climbing. Don't sleep on this one.If you enjoy the show, please rate, review, like, and subscribe to Sakura Society | An Anime Appreciation Podcast — and any other podcasts you love. Welcome to Manga Monday! This week we're diving into RuriDragon by Masaoki Shindo, a slice of life manga running in Shonen Jump that proves you don't need a single fight scene to be one of the most captivating series in the magazine.Ruri Aoki wakes up one morning with horns growing out of her head. Her mom's response? "Oh yeah, your dad's a dragon." And Ruri, in the most relatable move possible, just goes to school anyway. What follows is essentially dragon puberty, an introverted teenager navigating high school while her body keeps doing new and terrifying things like breathing fire when she sneezes. It's quiet, it's warm, it's funny, and it treats the anxiety of feeling different with so much genuine empathy that it hits way harder than it has any right to.Ranked first in Japan's Recommended Comics 2023, a KyoAni anime adaptation is in production, and it earned all of that off vibes alone. Sometimes the bravest thing a manga can do is just be gentle. If you enjoy the show, please rate, review, like, and subscribe to Sakura Society | An Anime Appreciation Podcast — and any other podcasts you love. Welcome to Manga Monday! This week we're diving into Tenkaichi - The Greatest Warrior Under the Rising Sun, written by Yosuke Nakamaru and illustrated by Kyotaro Azuma, an alternate history martial arts manga that asks one question: what if Oda Nobunaga unified Japan, found out he was dying, and decided the most entertaining way to choose his successor was a sixteen fighter death tournament featuring the greatest warriors in Japanese history?Miyamoto Musashi at sixteen years old. Honda Tadakatsu, the general who never took a wound. A blind swordsman. A kunoichi wielding an oversized fuma shuriken. Every fight is anything goes, death is encouraged, and the art goes so absurdly hard on every single panel that you'll forget to breathe. It's Record of Ragnarok meets Sengoku era Japan, except every fighter actually existed in some form, reimagined here as absolute monsters. An anime adaptation has been announced. If you want beautiful people doing terrible things to each other with historically inspired martial arts, this one delivers. If you enjoy the show, please rate, review, like, and subscribe to Sakura Society | An Anime Appreciation Podcast — and any other podcasts you love. Welcome to Manga Monday! This week we're diving into The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You, written by Rikito Nakamura and illustrated by Yukiko Nozawa, and yes you did just read that title correctly.Rentarou Aijou is a hopeless romantic who confessed his love to 100 different girls before high school and got rejected every single time. After praying at a shrine, the God of Love appears and tells him he's destined to meet 100 soulmates. Great news, right? Except there's a catch: if any of them fail to get into a relationship with him, they die. So now this man has to date all 100 of them, and here's the thing, he actually does it with his whole heart. This isn't your typical harem where the guy is clueless and the girls fight over scraps of attention.Rentarou genuinely loves every single one of them, remembers every detail, and treats each relationship like it matters, because it does. The manga takes every harem trope you've ever seen, looks it dead in the eye, and parodies it into oblivion while somehow also being one of the most sincere love stories running. The girls don't compete, they cooperate. There are no losing heroines. A third anime season is already confirmed for July 2026.This one is chaos, comedy, and heart in equal measure, and it has absolutely no right being as good as it is.If you enjoy the show, please rate, review, like, and subscribe to Sakura Society | An Anime Appreciation Podcast — and any other podcasts you love. Welcome to Manhwa Monday! This week we're diving into Unholy Blood by Lina Im, the number one supernatural webtoon on the platform and a vampire story that throws out every post-Twilight cliche in the book. Ten years ago, vampires infiltrated South Korea, and violent crime has skyrocketed ever since.Hayan Park is a college student who just wants a normal, quiet life, but she's hiding a dangerous secret: she's a pureblood vampire, the rarest and most powerful kind. When the vampires she's been avoiding destroy her family and kill Father Michael, the priest who raised her and her adoptive siblings, Hayan stops hiding. She teams up with Euntae, a rising star on the police anti-vampire task force with secrets of his own, and sets out to dismantle the vampire empire one Angel of Death at a time. These aren't your typical vampires either, sunlight doesn't touch them, stakes don't work, and they only live five years unless they consume pureblood, which makes Hayan the most hunted person alive. The art is absolutely stunning, the action hits like a truck, and Hayan is exactly the kind of female lead you want, a cinnamon roll who transforms into an absolute force of nature when you threaten the people she loves. The romance is a slow burn that never overshadows the plot, and the twists genuinely catch you off guard. This one earned every bit of its 7.6 million likes. If you enjoy the show, please rate, review, like, and subscribe to Sakura Society | An Anime Appreciation Podcast — and any other podcasts you love. Welcome to Manga Monday! This week we're diving into The Summer You Were There by Yuama, a yuri manga that ran in Comic Yuri Hime and will absolutely destroy you in the most beautiful way possible. Shizuku Hoshikawa is a shy, isolated high schooler carrying deep guilt from her past as a bully. She writes stories as an escape but never plans to show anyone. Then Kaori Asaka, the bright, popular girl in her class, gets her hands on Shizuku's manuscript, praises it like it's the greatest thing she's ever read, and makes a wild request: she wants Shizuku to write a romance novel about the two of them. To get material, Kaori convinces Shizuku to pretend-date her over summer break. It sounds like a lighthearted setup until the layers start peeling back. Shizuku's guilt over who she used to be, Kaori's suspiciously urgent need to make every moment count, and the secret she's hiding behind that relentless smile. This is a story about two girls finding each other at exactly the right time and exactly the wrong time, about writing as a way to hold onto someone, and about what it means to turn a life into a story before it's too late. Nominated twice for the Next Manga Award and ranked eighth on AnimeJapan's most wanted anime adaptations. Bring tissues. Welcome to Manga Monday! This week we're diving into Shikabane Kaigo, also known as Cadaver Nursing, a horror manga adapted from Harumi Miura's Kadokawa Horror Bunko novel with art by Ayuko.Akane Kuritani is a young caregiver looking for a fresh start who takes a live-in job at a secluded mansion deep in the mountains. Her patient is the wealthy, bedridden owner Hiwako Miyazono. Except when Akane opens that bedroom door for the first time, what's lying in bed doesn't look like a patient. It looks like a corpse. Discolored skin, claw-like hands, a putrid smell, and a burlap sack covering the face. The house rules are strange, the staff seem to be hiding something, there's zero outside contact, and everything about this job feels profoundly wrong. The horror here isn't loud or frantic. It's slow, suffocating, and patient, with hyper-detailed grotesque art that makes you feel as trapped in that mansion as Akane does. If you like your horror atmospheric, psychological, and dripping with dread, this one will get under your skin and stay there. If you enjoy the show, please rate, review, like, and subscribe to Sakura Society | An Anime Appreciation Podcast — and any other podcasts you love. Chidori Public High School and Kikyo Girls' Academy sit right next to each other but couldn't be more different. Chidori is full of so-called delinquent boys with terrible grades, Kikyo is a prestigious academy for wealthy young ladies, and the two schools absolutely despise each other. Rintaro Tsumugi is a Chidori student with a face that scares everyone away but a heart that's pure gold, working part time at his family's patisserie. Kaoruko Waguri is a kind, bubbly Kikyo student who walks into the shop one day and treats him like a normal person. They click instantly, and then the worst possible discovery: she's from that school. What follows is a story about two people fighting against every expectation, every prejudice, and every social wall their world puts between them. The author set out to write a manga where every character is kind, and you feel it. Over 10 million copies in circulation, a CloverWorks anime adaptation that earned universal acclaim, and not a single kiss until chapter 100. He's a one-person portal into rave history: childhood mornings at Goa beach parties, teenage years in Montreal throwing Canada's first proper rave, a run of records that helped define the electroclash era and collabs with everyone from Hudson Mohawke to FCUKERS. I sat down with Tiga to follow that thread from cassettes and sunrise dancing to global club circuits and a new album that's unapologetically his.We talk about what it meant when house and techno first landed like a cultural shock and how a “punk spirit” can live inside electronic music. Tiga also gets specific about craft: why playfulness belongs in dance music but humour can destroy the trance, and why he once said real DJing is like stand-up comedy. Along the way we chew on  DJ technique, set pacing, reading a room, and the strange relationship between performer confidence and crowd response. Then the conversation turns personal. Tiga describes “vibe fog” as his shorthand for the brutal reality of long COVID and the slow return of basic function and creative joy. We connect that recovery to making new work, including his INXS “Need You Tonight” rework, and to how flow state behind the decks has changed from vinyl intensity to today's faster, bigger, more concert-like parties. If you enjoy Lost and Sound and want to help keep it thriving, the best way to support is simple: subscribe, leave a rating, and write a quick review on your favourite podcast platform. Welcome to Manga Monday! This week we're diving into Kagurabachi, Takeru Hokazono's sword fighting revenge epic running in Weekly Shonen Jump that memed its way into the conversation and then backed it up with one of the best action manga in years. Chihiro Rokuhira grew up training under his father Kunishige, a legendary swordsmith whose six Enchanted Blades single-handedly ended a war. The goofy dad and the serious kid lived a quiet life together until a group of criminal sorcerers called the Hishaku murdered Kunishige and stole the blades. Now Chihiro wields his father's seventh and final blade on a blood soaked quest to reclaim what was taken. But this isn't just mindless revenge. It's about a father's belief that his creations should protect, not destroy, and a son carrying that forward even when hatred would be easier. The fight choreography is brutal, the lore keeps getting deeper, and Chihiro is the kind of protagonist who says almost nothing but hits you right in the chest with everything he does. Over 3 million copies sold. This one earned every bit of the hype.If you enjoy the show, please rate, review, like, and subscribe to Sakura Society | An Anime Appreciation Podcast — and any other podcasts you love. Techno doesn't need more rules, it needs more nerve. On Lost and Sound, I'm joined by Copenhagen-based DJ and producer Anastasia Kristensen, an artist whose work sits right on the edge between club functionality and something far more exploratory. After approaching a decade in the spotlight, her debut album Bestiarium Sombre (out 8 May on Intercept Records) is the perfect entry point into that mindset. Every track is tied to an animal, some real and some imagined. Anastasia uses this as a tool for storytelling, sound design, and rhythm choices that feel tactile, dark, and playful. Anastasia breaks down how field recordings and found sounds become musical material, how a hydraulic mechanism can turn into a “whale”, and why not overthinking is sometimes the most disciplined creative choice. We also get into the lived reality around the work: touring and crowd connection, how she prepares music without over-preparing a set, why atmosphere and darkness change what people hear, and what it meant to clarify her Ukrainian background after 2022 while staying focused on meaningful local action. We finish with thoughts on AI in music, not as an artistic replacement but as a wider economic and climate question, plus where she wants to take her sound next.If you enjoy Lost and Sound and want to help keep it thriving, the best way to support is simple: subscribe, leave a rating, and write a quick review on your favourite podcast platform. Welcome to Manhwa Monday! This week we're diving into The Greatest Estate Developer, written by BK_Moon and illustrated by Kim Hyunsoo, a fantasy isekai on Webtoon that takes the "reincarnated into a novel" premise and turns it into something genuinely hilarious.Civil engineering student Suho Kim falls asleep reading a fantasy novel and wakes up as Lloyd Frontera, a lazy, drunk nobleman whose family is drowning in debt. But Suho's read the book, he knows what's coming, and he's got something no one in this world has: modern engineering knowledge. So instead of swinging a sword or casting spells, this man is solving fantasy world problems with drainage systems, structural reinforcements, and infrastructure planning. He's got a loyal knight, a giant hamster companion, and the most unhinged facial expressions in all of manhwa. It sounds absurd and it absolutely is, but the engineering concepts are legit, the world building is surprisingly deep, and underneath all the comedy there's real heart about rebuilding something broken and proving everyone wrong. This one's pure gold.If you enjoy the show, please rate, review, like, and subscribe to Sakura Society | An Anime Appreciation Podcast — and any other podcasts you love. Episode 200 calls for a guest who thinks towards the future. DJ and musician Yu Su has a composer's ear for detail and a chef's instinct for serving up textured sonic platters. We talk about sound as material, about burning and melting ideas down, then reshaping them into something new, and about why minimal arrangements can feel more dynamic when every layer has room to breathe. Along the way we get into dancefloor culture as a sensory ritual, the strange power of rules and instructions, and Yu Su's “polyphonic eating” dinners where silence becomes part of the experience.Yu Su's story stretches from Kaifeng to Vancouver to London, with early years of classical piano and a lasting love for Debussy that later makes sense as a bridge to ambient, dub techno, minimal tech house, and leftfield club music. She explains why certain styles only click with the right context, how an early electronic music experience at a Floating Points night rewired her ears, and how she learned production by reverse engineering beats until the logic revealed itself. If you enjoy Lost and Sound and want to help keep it thriving, the best way to support is simple: subscribe, leave a rating, and write a quick review on your favourite podcast platform. Welcome to Manga Monday! This week we're diving into The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All by Sumiko Arai, affectionately known by fans as "Green Yuri," and the winner of the Next Manga Award 2023.Aya is a fashionable gyaru high schooler who's obsessed with rock music but can't find anyone who shares her taste, until she starts visiting a small CD shop and falls hard for the cool, mysterious clerk dressed in all black with a hoodie and face mask. The problem? That clerk is actually her quiet, nerdy female classmate Mitsuki Koga, who works at her uncle's shop and wears contacts and unisex clothes to stay anonymous. Mitsuki knows exactly who Aya is, sits right next to her in class, and is terrified of the truth coming out. What starts as a premise you think you've seen before quickly becomes something special, a story about two girls connecting through music, building a friendship that's achingly authentic to how teenagers actually bond, and slowly realising their feelings run deeper than fandom. It's fluffy, it's heartfelt, it handles queer romance with real care and zero sensationalism, and an anime has already been confirmed. If you want something that'll make your heart do that thing, this is it.If you enjoy the show, please rate, review, like, and subscribe to Sakura Society | An Anime Appreciation Podcast — and any other podcasts you love. José Gonzáles makes quiet music full of loud ideas. I sat down with him in person to trace his journey from playing in hardcore punk bands to the intimate arpeggios that turned Veneer and Heartbeats into global touchstones. Jose opens up about writing “humble accusations,” using minimal sound to deliver maximal ideas, and how a scientist's method—shaped by his biochemistry background—helps him build tension, release, and meaning inside quiet music. It all gets a bit Dawkins: Jose unpacks meme complexes, the cultural building blocks that replicate from brain to brain, and shows how his work recombines influences from Latin America, Sweden, and shelves of philosophy and science audiobooks. We explore the thread that runs from early relationship sketches to pointed critiques of dogma, moral relativism, and “doomsday dudes,” all while keeping the songs spacious enough to live at dinner tables and in headphones after midnight. We talk about how on his new album –  Against the Dying Light, José connects Enlightenment values—reason, empiricism, individual liberty—to today's urgent questions around AI, engineered risks, and human flourishing. He celebrates breakthroughs like AlphaFold while calling for alignment, transparency, and calm public reasoning. The result is a rare balance: optimism without naivety, warning without hysteria, and art that invites you to think without telling you what to think.I've re-activated the show's Substack newsletter. Alexis Taylor has somehow racked up 25 years now as a founding member of Hot Chip and is about to release his seventh album, the rather magnificent Paris In Spring. How did that happen?I spoke to Alexis about balancing songcraft with production. We talk about how a busy year sharpened his focus, why finishing isn't real until the music meets an audience, and how a strong melody and a few true lines can carry a track across any arrangement.Alexis opens up about writing from feeling without turning songs into diary entries. He shares the stories behind darker cuts that circle self-distraction and drinking without exploiting pain, and he explains how Scott English's Brandy and pop's long history of reinvention influenced his approach. We get into one about how to approach covers: taking the Stones' Wild Horses into a dub-soaked slow-burn shaped by Rhythm & Sound textures and Euro-pop reggae echoes, built with producer Pierre Rousseau and recorded at Nicolas Godin's studio. We also rewind to early London shows and why refusing the uniform of the era helped Hot Chip find its own lane—irony beside tenderness, dance beside detail, authenticity without cosplay. From Beastie Boys devotion to Royal Trux revelations, Alexis maps the influences that mattered and how they were absorbed rather than imitated.Alexis Taylor on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/alexishotchip/?hl=enAlexis Taylor on Bandcamp:https://alexistaylor.bandcamp.com/album/paris-in-the-springHuge thanks to Audio-Technica – makers of beautifully engineered audio gear and sponsors of Lost and Sound. In this world, ninja still operate in the shadows of modern Japan, trained and deployed by the Ninja Public Safety Force as spies, bodyguards, and counterterrorists. Yodaka, is their strongest asset, an unstoppable force who can infiltrate anything, take down entire crowds of hitmen, and vanish without a trace. His new mission? Protect Aoi Mukai, a clumsy high school heiress being targeted by fugitive ninja, while blending in as a normal student. The problem? This guy can barely talk to people his own age without spiraling. But here's what makes it special: Yodaka doesn't win Aoi over with cool guy confidence or some rehearsed act. He wins her over by just being himself, awkward, earnest, and genuinely wanting to be her friend, something she's never actually had despite years of people being assigned to get close to her. It's got incredible action, genuine heart, and a comedic dynamic that just works. Everything is political, even nature. That spark leads us into a wide-ranging conversation with Green-House—Olive Ardizoni and Michael Flanagan—whose new album Hinterlands on Ghostly International proves that quiet, spacious music can still carry teeth. We trace the project's beginnings in LA: Olive escaping a soulless service job by walking Griffith Park, Michael offering early tech scaffolding, and the two slowly dissolving roles until the songs breathed on their own. Think Japanese environmental music and library records as wayfinders; sampled and real guitars treated like synths; textures that breathe, We dig into labels. “Ambient” doesn't fit sonically, but its non-hierarchical ethos does. “New Age” is another story: we talk wellness capitalism, spiritual packaging, and the lazy use of eastern signifiers, especially glaring in LA where cultish histories still hum under the surface. From there, we examine the streaming economy that rewards backgroundability, how algorithms sell artists their own data back, and why Green-House resist being flattened into spa-core.Green-House on Instagram:Hinterlands is released on Ghostly International on March 20thGreen-House on Bandcamp:https://green-house.bandcamp.com/album/hinterlandshttps://www.instagram.com/green_house1976/?hl=enHuge thanks to Audio-Technica – makers of beautifully engineered audio gear and sponsors of Lost and Sound. I sat down with Parisian‑born, Brussels‑based producer UFO95 to trace the line between brutalist architecture, Detroit machine soul, and live techno. From early days in punk bands and birthdays above his parents' club to a Tresor residency and a nerve‑tight Berghain performance, he unpacks how structure, space, and human error can turn a set into something physical. We dive into the design choices behind the new UFO95 album A Brutalist Dystopian Society Part 2: concrete‑solid kicks, saturated drones, and spacious pads that carry the grey, functional, futuristic mood of brutalism without ornament. He explains why half his shows remain improvised, how shrinking his hardware rig sharpened the energy, and what different cities teach him about pacing a room. Expect thoughtful nods to Underground Resistance, Jeff Mills, Surgeon, and Regis, reframed through a personal lens that swaps copycat nostalgia for living lineage. We also explore the craft behind the scenes: producing with the live arc in mind, writing twenty‑minute passages that breathe without a kick, and treating the club as a place to express, not excess. UFO95 talks candidly about resisting trends, favouring slow, minimal, and mental tracks while much of techno chases extremes, and why keeping protest and experimentation at the heart of the genre still matters. If you enjoy Lost and Sound and want to help keep it thriving, the best way to support the podcast is simple: subscribe, leave a rating, and write a quick review on your favourite podcast platform. Welcome to Manga Monday! This week we're diving into After God, Sumi Eno's wild horror-comedy masterpiece about a Japan that's been invaded by gods, and not the kind, merciful type. These are massive, incomprehensible beings called Idolatry Prohibited Organisms that turned entire cities into uninhabitable Danger Zones. Lock eyes with one? You turn to stone. They breathe on you? Your body dissolves into water. For thirty years, humanity has had one question: how do you kill a god? At the center is Kamikura Waka, a fierce high school girl who watched her best friend Shion die at the hands of a god, livestreamed for the world to see, and traveled to Tokyo not for answers, but for revenge. The twist? There's a god living inside her too. Then there's Tokinaga, the Anti-God researcher who found her, a gentle, self-sacrificing man hiding darkness of his own. Together they're humanity's best shot at fighting back. It's got body horror, black comedy, gods with absolutely unhinged blue-and-orange morality who don't even understand what death is, and a female lead in a shōnen who is genuinely allowed to be terrifying, vulnerable, and complex all at once. This one doesn't just break the mold, it asks why the mold was ever there in the first place. Please be sure to rate, review, like and subscribe to MTH as well as all the other podcasts you consume, it takes no time, costs you no money and means the world to us podcasters and content creators. I sat down with Nathan Fake, one of the UK's most distinctive electronic music producers, to chart his journey from rural Norfolk to the forefront of techno, IDM and experimental electronic music — and to unpack Evaporator, his seventh studio album. The record marks a clear pivot away from drum-heavy habits toward mood, melody and atmosphere, growing out of an intentional “ambient-only” brief. We dig into the nuts and bolts of music production: why Nathan still sketches ideas in old versions of Cubase, how cassette saturation, cheap gear and sonic imperfections add human friction, and where modern plugins genuinely earn their place. He talks about contrast as a compositional tool — lush pads against tough drums — and traces a lineage from Border Community's trance-tinged techno through to echoes of Warp-era electronic atmospherics. There's also a candid look at playing legacy tracks live, reshaping classics like “The Sky Was Pink” and “Outhouse” through improvisation, memory and feel, rather than carbon-copy recreations.Beyond sound design, the conversation opens out into bigger questions about electronic music today. Do long-form tracks still survive in a scroll- and swipe-first ecosystem? Nathan answers by doubling down, placing a nine-minute centrepiece at the heart of the new album. We reflect on working with small independent labels versus larger music organisations, and he shares pragmatic advice for staying singular: ignore trends, set your own constraints, and let the idea dictate the tool. We also probe the monoculture of online tutorials and ubiquitous DAWs.If you enjoy Lost and Sound and want to help keep it thriving, the best way to support the podcast is simple: subscribe, leave a rating, and write a quick review on your favourite podcast platform. Welcome to Manga Monday! This week we're diving into 86, Asato Asato and Shirabi's devastating military sci-fi masterpiece about the Republic of San Magnolia, a nation that claims it fights its war with "zero casualties" using unmanned mechs. The lie? Those mechs are piloted by the 86, people stripped of their humanity and sent to die in machines while the privileged sit safe behind walls. At the center is Shinei Nouzen, the "Undertaker" squadron leader who's seen too many comrades fall, and Vladilena Milizé, the Handler who refuses to see the 86 as disposable. It's about the cost of war, the weight of survival, and what it means to truly see someone as human. This one doesn't just hit, it devastates. Please be sure to rate, review, like and subscribe to MTH as well as all the other podcasts you consume, it takes no time, costs you no money and means the world to us podcasters and content creators. Nikki Nair gets serious about fun — the formerly Tennessee, formerly Atlanta, currently LA-based DJ and producer talks about how a punk sense of purpose, Detroit and Chicago foundations, and a love of “broken” sound converge into sets and tracks that surprise without losing the groove. Nikki gets into how a recent UK residency sharpened his instincts, the studio sessions that kept his mood afloat, and the tiny cultural artefacts (hello, Percy Pigs) that colour the journey as much as any plugin. From a life-changing afternoon at Submerge with Underground Resistance legend Mike Banks to late nights in Knoxville and formative trips to Atlanta, Nikki maps the lineage that informs his playful, left-turn club and electronic music. We get into the tension between function and originality, how drumming shaped his breakbeat brain, why he chases flow states that make him literally laugh at the DAW, and how he decides when to risk losing a slice of the crowd in order to move the culture an inch forward. There's a wider lens, too. Nikki is candid about the modern reality of nightlife — selling tickets and telling a human story — while keeping the focus on service, community, and sincerity.OK, housekeeping: I've re-activated the show's Substack newsletter. Blue Lake is the music of American artist Jason Dungan, shaped by living on a Copenhagen island where wild parkland sits on reclaimed industrial ground and flight paths cross the sky. We sit down to explore how place, practice, and people turn Americana and ambient textures into something fused with a European sensibility. Jason shares the pivot from visual art to sound, and why Don Cherry's spirit sits at the project's core—not as a template but as a way of working that welcomes risk, collaboration, and porous borders. We unpack how chords feel different when five musicians make them together, how a rock club can unlock a set the concert hall couldn't, and why the best parts of a record often come from the problems you refuse to outsource. Along the way, we talk recording in Sweden's forests beside factories, treating albums like thoughtfully built exhibitions, and keeping the human pulse in music even as tools get slicker. We also zoom out. Touring with a band in the UK, leaning on Scandinavian funding, and balancing freelance work all reveal the new economics artists navigate. Jason calls out AI's promise to “solve” creative labour as missing the point—the friction is the point. And when politics intrudes, it's real: living in Denmark means Greenland is neighbours, language, history, protest. Small-country confidence, built on community and cooperation, mirrors the values in Blue Lake's sound. If you enjoy Lost and Sound and want to help keep it thriving, the best way to support is simple: subscribe, leave a rating, and write a quick review on your favourite podcast platform. Welcome to Manga Monday! This week we're diving into Gokurakugai, Yuto Sano's morally murky supernatural thriller about the ultimate odd couple: Alma, a perpetually hungry teen with demon blood, and Tao, his soft-spoken but trigger-happy partner. They run a "troubleshooter agency" hunting magas—humans-turned-demons—but here's the kicker: when your targets were once human, where's the line between justice and murder? Armed with weapons forged from Alma's own blood, our duo navigates a world where monsters and victims look suspiciously alike. What happens when a band outlives its own legend and keeps the spark anyway? I sat down with Eric Pulido of Midlake to trace how a group known for mythic, pastoral folk found a new centre after a seismic lineup change—and why the music still lands with the same autumnal glow. Eric takes us behind new album A Bridge Too Far, from sketching twenty ideas to recording live with producer Sam Evian, capturing a decades old chemistry. We talk about stepping into the vocalist role after Tim Smith's departure and the electric snap that shaped an album that could well have sunk lesser acts – Antiphon. Eric shares how his lyric writing moved toward clarity and truth—naming real people and moments while keeping songs timeless and open to anyone's story. We go deep on influences too, from West Coast folk and British folk gateways to earlier loves like Björk, and how Denton, Texas, nurtured the band's early years with a supportive arts scene and real stages to grow on.I love how he talks about touring with refreshing honesty: the fragile math of mid-level bands, why Europe can be more workable than the vast US, and how thoughtful setlists honour both new work and the gateway songs from The Trials of Van Occupanther. There's a visual thread as well, with Eric reflecting on Midlake's cinematic feel and recent collaboration with Ted Lasso's James Lance. If you enjoy Lost and Sound and want to help keep it thriving, the best way to support is simple: subscribe, leave a rating, and write a quick review on your favourite podcast platform.
