Move Over, Sir! How Women Took the Throttle on America's Railroads The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series, right here on radio and podcast. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and today's episode is part of our special 60th Anniversary celebration with Smithsonian Associates—marking six decades of education, inspiration, and powerful storytelling. And this one, friends, is both powerful and long overdue. You're about to hear a remarkable conversation with Smithsonian Associate Patricia LaBounty, curator of the Union Pacific Railroad Museum, about an exhibit that challenges history's blind spots and spotlights the women who helped build—and quite literally run—the railroads of America. Patricia LaBounty will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates, and the title of her presentation is Move Over Sir: Women Working on the Railroad. More details are available via links in out show notes today. The exhibit is titled “Move Over, Sir!”, and the title isn't just clever. It's a line drawn in iron, a statement about persistence in the face of exclusion. When we think of the railroad, we often picture smoke-belching locomotives, dusty rail yards, and stoic men in overalls. What we don't picture—at least not often enough—are the women at the telegraph, in the ticket booth, on the repair lines, and yes, in the engineer's seat. From the Civil War, when more than 100,000 women filled vital rail roles as men went to battle… to the 1930s when Union Pacific created women-only cars staffed by trained nurse-stewardesses… to trailblazers like Bonnie Leake, the first female engineer at UP, and Edwina Justus, the first Black woman in that role—this is history that's gritty, inspiring, and still unfolding. Smithsonian Associate Patricia LaBounty joins us to share these stories and more: women who were told to step aside, sit down, or stay home—and who refused. These are the voices that helped carry this country forward, and it's our honor to put them front and center today. So, settle in. You'll never hear the words “all aboard” quite the same way again. Here now, with the music of Glen Miller echoing in the background—a nod to the rail era that changed this country—our conversation with Patricia LaBounty, curator of “Move Over, Sir!” at the Union Pacific Railroad Museum. And this is The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series on radio and podcast. I'm Paul Vogelzang. Let's begin. That's our show for today. Again, a very special thanks to Patricia LaBounty, curator of the Union Pacific Railroad Museum, and to all those women—past and present—who've shown what strength, skill, and leadership look like on and off the tracks. Patricia LaBounty will be appearing at Smithsonian Associates, and the title of her presentation is Move Over Sir: Women Working on the Railroad. More details are available via links in our show notes today. To hear more inspiring conversations like this one and explore our full archive of interviews, visit us online at notold-better.com.

Closing music courtesy of Banjo HangOut -- The William Tell OvertureThis podcast continues with a “Constitutional Minute”It escapes our notice that the election of Abraham Lincoln was a seminal event. Not just because it triggered secession. The election of Lincoln was the birth of political parties as we now know that term. The nation was emerging from what historians have labeled “the era of good feeling” a monumental misnomer if there ever was one. It earned its name because there were no political parties. The House of Representatives comprised Federalists and “Anti” Federalists with a smattering of Whigs (Anti-Jacksonian-democrats).There were no political parties in The Senate, there was no direct election of senators that had to wait for the 17th Amendment 1913.During this so-called era of “good feeling” it forced two presidential elections into the House of Representatives 1801 & 1824. Both times in a dispute over electoral ballots.

This episode's got all sorts of trafficky truckin' road-interface goodness to assist you in your daily gearhead existence, but it's mostly about how to understand your tires and what's right when the white stuff is falling down in Front Range fashion. Or any range... We've got the grok on tire width, suppleness, temperature range, snow treads, chemicals and materials, ice versus snow driving, why it's a fine idea to have a second set of llantas for the off-season, and why you probably wouldn't wear hiking boots to a formal dance. ...And why all that and a bucket of fish heads still won't save you if you aren't good at driving. Not to put too fine a point on it (we're ALL fine points here at the Garage Hour), there's also a little free gas (at the pump), a few thoughts about why that guy is following you (such a nice bumper), plus Floyd, FLeppard and Pantera.

There are also birthday greetings to September babies from Tiktoker Soupy Garbage Juice (he's released the full song but I didn't realize it until too late to include the whole song on the show). And while not mentioned in the episode, I highly recommend Ric Burns' documentary about Ansel Adams.

Les Claypool was busy enough in 2002 with the release and support of Purple Onion, but he also found time to complete a cover of Hot Rod Lincoln for a compilation album, land Frog Brigade Bonnaroo performances on two official releases, and start his journey with Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains. One of the most incredible stories of the Civil War
Artist Ibrahim Mahama ‘time travels' between British colonial and independent Ghana, tracing railway lines across African and European countries in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in the 20th century. Ibrahim Mahama is well-known for his large-scale, site-specific installations that speak to the local effects of colonialism, migration, and global economics. Working in Tamale, Kumasi, and Accra, Ghana, he often works with found materials, collected from abandoned places of pre- and post-independence production. Spanning what was then known as the Gold Coast, the Sekondi Locomotive Workshop was built by the British in 1923, to extract and transport resources like cocoa and minerals, the foundations of European colonial wealth and contemporary capitalism. With charcoal and ink drawings, sculptures and film, Ibrahim connects the histories, legacies, and labourers of this now disused railway back to the UK - layering them atop Waverley, one of the nation's busiest train stations, for his first exhibition in Scotland. With Ibrahim's jute sack textile installations, we discuss shared practices of reuse, repurpose, and recycle with El Anatsui, an inspiration from an older generation who is also exhibiting for the first time in the city of Edinburgh. He shares photographs, personal letters, stamps from his archive, highlighting the respect shown to West African leaders like Kwame Nkrumah in countries of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), especially socialist Yugoslavia. Using train carriages as sculptures, galleries, and classrooms back in Tamale, Ibrahim reconstructs Ghana's colonial past to build its future, reversing flows of trade and migration to Africa. We discuss the potential and ‘charge' within these materials which, like bodies, carry lived experience and knowledge, and the complex relationship with lasting architectures and ‘rural cosmopolitanism' in societies today. Ibrahim also shares his collaborations across African and diasporic communities, with craftspeople, weavers, and makers at his Red Clay Studio in northern Ghana, to artists like Anya Paintsil in Manchester. Ibrahim Mahama: Songs about Roses runs at Fruitmarket in Edinburgh until 6 October 2024. A book launch and artist talk takes place on the penultimate day of the exhibition (the day before the exhibition closes). A Spell of Good Things opens at White Cube New York on 5 September 2024. Parliament of Ghosts (2019) continues online via the Whitworth, theVOV, and Vortic Art. And Purple Hibiscus, part of Unravel: The Power & Politics of Textiles in Art, was installed at the Barbican in London through summer 2024. Hear artist Serge Attukwei Clottey live at the Eden Project in Cornwall, on his family's internal migration from Jamestown/Usshertown in British Accra, Ghana, to coastal La (Labadi), Afrogallonism, and his collaborative practice, uplifting his community with upcycled plastic waste, through Noko Y3 Dzen (There's Something in the World) (2018–Now): pod.link/1533637675/episode/8093f81c6a2eaaf7589bb73768e2a20c PRODUCER: Jelena Sofronijevic. From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, July 5th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. Great Locomotive Chase Soldiers Receive Posthumous Medals of Honor In 1863, the first U.S. Army Medals of Honor were awarded to soldiers from the Great Locomotive Chase during the Civil War. On Wednesday, the final two raiders, Privates George D. Wilson and Philip G. Shadrach, received their posthumous medals in a White House ceremony led by President Joe Biden. ***JOE BIDEN*** These Union volunteers seized a Confederate train near Big Shanty, Georgia, aiming to destroy rail lines and hinder Confederate supply routes. Disguised as civilians, they embarked on a daring 90-mile mission, only to be caught and later executed. Their bravery was long overlooked, but Civil War historian Brad Quinlin fought for over a decade to secure this honor. Here are family members of Privates Shadrach and Wilson on what the awards mean to their family: ***FAMILY MEMBERS*** Today, The General locomotive rests at the Southern Museum in Kennesaw, while The Texas is housed at the Atlanta History Center. Visitors can also explore a replica of the raiders' planning room at the Marietta History Center. For more news about our community, visit mdjonline.com.
