Omnivore Recordings co-founder and four-time Gramny-winning producer Cheryl Pawelski has figured out how to do what she loves for a living. She went from obsessing about music in Milwaukee to having great adventures in the "floater pool" at Capitol Records in Los Angeles. With stints at Rhino and Concord as well, she oversaw ambitious reissues by, among others, the Band, Big Star, the Smithereens, the Beach Boys, Pat Benatar, Nina Simone and the Miles Davis Quintet. Her long association with Wilco has included deluxe boxes for Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (which won a Grammy) and, earlier this year, A Ghost Is Born. She won another Grammy for the 2023 7-CD set Written In Their Soul: The Stax Songwriter Demos. She recounts it all with the passion of a fan, even as she deals with the challenges of running a record label and the recent loss of her Altadena home in the Southern California wildfires. We'll explore the stories behind each track, the challenges Emitt Rhodes faced during its creation and how this album remains a timeless example of musical craftsmanship. Join us for a journey into one of the most influential yet underappreciated records of the era. The follow-up album, Blue Madonna, included the singles “Sweet Dreams” and “God Save Our Blood,” featuring Lana Del Rey. After a departure from Interscope and a recording hiatus, he returned with the Suddenly EP in 2023, which marked a sonic shift to a more organic aesthetic. That same year, he and girlfriend Courtney Farren released the Together Together EP. BØRNS' most recent EP is the retro-infused Honeybee, which was released in early 2025.

Six-time Grammy winner, Academy Award nominee, and Songwriters Hall of Famer Glen Ballard joins us to talk about his work with Michael Jackson, Alanis Morrisette, Dave Matthews, and many others!PART ONEPaul and Scott talk about the awesomeness that is Omnivore Recordings, dig into the Fire Aid concert, and talk about their '90s music geekery. PART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Glen BallardABOUT GLEN BALLARDFollowing an entry-level job at Elton John's Rocket Records in Los Angeles, Glen Ballard began his creative career as a staff songwriter for MCA Music Publishing. Early singles included George Strait's “You Look So Good in Love” and Jack Wagner's major hit “All I Need,” which Glen also produced. In the mid-1980s he went to work for Quincy Jones, an era when he and Siedah Garrett co-wrote Michael Jackson's triple platinum single “Man in the Mirror.” By the dawn of the 1990s, Glen had begun collaborating with Wilson Phillips, co-writing their chart topping hits “Hold On” and “You're in Love.” He went on to produce and co-write all the songs on Alanis Morissette's debut album, Jagged Little Pill, including “You Oughta Know,” “Hand in My Pocket,” “All I Really Want,” “Ironic,” “You Learn,” and “Head Over Feet.” The project earned the Album of the Year Grammy, and Glen returned to produce and co-write Alannis's sophomore release, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, including the hit “Thank U.” Other songs from the Glen Ballard songbook include Aerosmith's “Pink” and “Falling in Love is Hard on the Knees,” as well as the Dave Matthews Band's “I Did It” and “The Space Between.” Glen earned a Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song for “Believe,” which he co-wrote with Alan Silvestri for the film The Polar Express. He has written and produced songs for Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Ringo Starr, Van Halen, Chaka Khan, Christina Aguilera, Katy Perry, and many others. In recent years, Glen has found major success in musical theater, including writing original lyrics and music for GHOST the musical, and teaming again with Alan Silvestri to write the score for the musical adaptation of Back to the Future. Glen has won six Grammy awards, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2023.

Baxie welcomes back 4-time Grammy award winning producer Cheryl Pawelski from Omnivore Recordings. Cheryl's more recent Grammy Award was for Best Historical Album for the amazing 7-CD box set entitled, "Written in Their Soul: The Stax Songwriter Demos". This was a project that took Cheryl more than 17 years to compile and produce. It's a collection of nearly 150 demos that were recorded by the original songwriters for Stax Records. Many of these songs went on to become hits for Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Isaac Hayse, The Staples Singers, and many more. Many of these tracks have never been released in any form until now. And the results are absolutely brilliant. Cheryl not only talks about the box set and it's two Grammy awards (including one for best album notes), but she also talks about some of the incredible releases that are available on Omnivore Recordings. The Cowsills are the original family band - formed in 1965, they hit pay dirt with their smash, “The Rain, the Park and Other Things” in 1967. Other hits followed, including “Indian Lake,” “We Can Fly” and “Hair.” They even were the basis for the hit TV show The Partridge Family. After some time apart, the group reformed in the early 90's and has been playing and recording ever since. They've been a fixture on the Happy Together tour for almost a decade, and they just released a brand new album called Rhythm of the World last year. Now, comes A Christmas Offering from the Cowsills. Two of the songs date back to 1992, “Christmastime (Song For Marissa)” and “Some Good Years.” These two songs are joined with a brand-new, acapella version of “Winter Wonderland” - and the EP is now available digitally from Omnivore Recordings. We chat with Susan Cowsill about how Christmas is the favorite holiday of the Cowsill family, the origins of these "lost" holiday tunes, and the prospects of new Cowsill material in 2024.

This week Baxie welcomes Roger Joseph Manning Jr. back to the podcast. Roger has not only written, toured, and/or recorded with the likes of Roger Waters, Beck, Adele, JayZ, Johnny Cash, Brian Wilson and many others--he was also one of the co-founders of the band Jellyfish. In the early 1990's Jellyfish released two albums that, while overlooked at the time, have become essential cult classics. This includes their sadly overlooked 1993 masterpiece "Spilt Milk". An album, which is not one my favorite albums of all time--I'll even go so far as to say it is one of the most astonishing power-pop albums ever recorded! (I'm dead serious). Over the last three years Roger has released 3 EP's with the band The Lickerish Quartet (with former Jellyfish touring members Eric Dover and Tim Smith), he reissued both of his previous solo albums ("Land of Pure Imagination" and "Catnip Dynamite"), he's also just released his latest EP "Radio Daze" on Omnivore Recordings. Written in Their Soul: The Stax Songwriting Demos (out now from Stax/Craft Recordings) is a treasure trove of lost soul & R&B recordings from the 60's and early 70's, many of which have never been heard before. Cheryl Pawelski personally had to comb through literally hundreds of hours of recordings in search of these hidden gems. It's a project two decades in the making. The result is a 7-disc set full of surprises - you get nascent versions of songs we know, like “Respect Yourself” and “(If Loving You is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right.”But the real thrill is the set's final three discs: 66 songs that were never released by anyone. Pawelski was working for Concord Music when she began this endeavor. That was 17 years ago. She now runs Omnivore Recordings. We discuss the detective work that went into the project. How she managed to wade through the massive amount of random recordings in search of these soul nuggets. She also talks about attending the box set premiere in Memphis with many of the surviving artists on this collection. Pawelski also give us insight into upcoming releases from Omnivore.

Here's one for fellow rock doc lovers. Bobby Colomby of Blood, Sweat & Tears drops in to discuss the new film, What the Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat & Tears? The movie, which is in theaters now, reveals an incredible story which has been under wraps for more than 50 years. Blood, Sweat & Tears traveled overseas in June 1970 to become the first American band to perform behind the Iron Curtain. The tour, which was sponsored by the U.S. State Department, put the band into a situation they never could have imagined.Through documentary footage shot during the Iron Curtain tour (and thought to be lost) and present-day interviews with band members and historians, as well as the unsealing of government records,  What the Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat & Tears? unravels the details of this extraordinary year in the life of the band.In addition to the movie, we also discuss Bobby's additional adventures in the music industry, working in A&R and as a producer with the band Pages, plus projects with the Jacksons and the Tubes, just to name a few. We dig through a lot of topics.Bobby wants to hear your feedback and answer questions about the film. Get in touch via Twitter @RecordPlayerPod and we'll collect the questions for him to answer on a follow-up edition of this podcast.Find information about local screenings via the official film website and make sure to check out the soundtrack and score which will be released on April 21 by Omnivore Recordings. In My Life. I am going to tell you how Omnivore defines itself because it's succinct and I am lazy. Says here, “It specializes in historical releases, reissues and previously unissued vintage recordings as well as select releases of new music on CD, vinyl and digital formats.” Cheryl walked into the Café loaded down with their latest releases and you should have seen my face. It was like Christmas morning and I was 10 and Santa brought everything I wanted. Welcome back Cheryl Pawelski.

The Cowsills are the original family band. Formed in Rhode Island, the group started out with a trio of brothers: Bill, Bob & Barry, but eventually grew to include brothers John and Paul, sister Susan and mother Barbara. They had big hits with “The Rain, the Park and Other Things,” “Indian Lake,” and “Hair.” The Cowsills were the inspiration for the hit TV series The Partridge Family. Then, years later, the group got their own documentary, “Family Band,” which is available on streaming services. At a time when division is at an all-time high, we need some of that familial harmony once again to bring us together. The Cowsills have regrouped for their first new studio album in almost 30 years, called Rhythm of the World, from Omnivore Recordings. We talk with founding member Bob Cowsill on how he, brother Paul and sister Susan, put this new album project together, with the trio of them writing the bulk of the songs. He reveals how one song was inspired by a saying from Howard Kaylan of the Turtles, another was written about how Hurricane Katrina affected their family.

Not only is he a treasure-trove of musical knowledge and facts, but he knows the ins-outs-and-in-betweens of the business side of things, which is always interesting to dissect and break down. OH, and he's a co-founder of "Omnivore Recordings" who just won a damn GRAMMY!! It doesn't get much cooler than that...until I tell you that the album that won was by the legendary Mr. Rogers. "It's Such A Good Feeling: The Best of Mr. Rogers" (available now for purchase, both physical and digital). It took home the Best Historical Album Award at this year's Grammys, and honestly, I couldn't be more impressed or proud to say that a family member of mine was an integral part of making that happen, so hats off. You are in for a special treat today! I've got to do an exclusive phone interview with David Ball, the last living member of Uncle Walt's Band, as well as a special guest, country music singer/songwriter Gary P. Nunn.   Uncle Walt's Band was an important cult band, which has influenced so many musicians in the US. After releasing the anthology and expanded versions of their self-titled debut and its follow-up, An American in Texas, Omnivore Recordings released a re-imagined version of Recorded Live — now titled Recorded Live at Waterloo Ice House.  Recorded Live at Waterloo Ice House helps paint a bigger, wider picture of Uncle Walt's Band in their prime, and certainly in their element. I've listened the album on repeat, the 21 tracks are so powerful, not missing any of the authenticity and originality since their original performance in 1982.  First I talk to Gary P. Nunn about his memories of Uncle Walt's Band and how they influenced his music. Then David Ball and I chatted for one hour about what it was like when the band was active in Austin. He shares memories and stories of their live performances, rehearsals, recording sessions, and creating with his two late bandmates, Walter Hyatt and Champ Hood.  I feel honoured as this is the only interview David Ball has done to promote the re-release of their live album, and I hope you enjoy this conversation with a true Texas legend.   “We loved playing live. Van Duren came out of the same Memphis music scene as cult heroes Big Star and has played with various members of that band. After years of making melodic music in relative obscurity, Duren was approached by a pair of Australian filmmakers who wanted to make a documentary about him. The resulting movie, Waiting – the Van Duren Story, has played at a few film festivals, but has yet to secure wide distribution. More importantly, Omnivore Recordings assembled a soundtrack to the film, which helped introduce Duren’s music to a whole new audience. Now, that same label has issued the artist’s first two solo albums – Are You Serious? and Idiot Optimism – the former being highly collectible among power pop aficionados, the latter getting its first official release. We chat with the Memphis native about twice auditioning for Big Star, and what he learned from guitarist Chris Bell. Plus, why after recording his second album, he walked away without it being released, and the prospect of new music from his duo Loveland Duren in 2021.

BE TRUE TO YOURSELF, BADFINGER GUITARIST, SINGER AND SONGWRITER JOEY MOLLAND’S FIRST ALBUM OF NEW MATERIAL IN NEARLY 10 YEARS, IS DUE FROM OMNIVORE RECORDINGS ON OCTOBER 16. Album contains the singles “Rainy Day Man” and “Better Tomorrow”; produced by Mark Hudson (Ringo Starr, Harry Nilsson, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne) You can listen to the first two singles at https://open.spotify.com/artist/1ir4qcqXLQRraLp8QYZkFo?si=pbp1K3ZoQj6kW7FJ7UWWvg The story of Badfinger is one of rock’s saddest and most tragic tales. But one thing is for certain: the group that practically invented “power pop” was abundantly filled with talent. To have three great songwriters in one band was reminiscent of the group’s original label founders, the Beatles. Badfinger’s singles are still regarded as pop gems some 50 years later: “Come and Get It,” “No Matter What,” “Day After Day,” and “Baby Blue.” Perhaps the most unheralded of the three in Badfinger was Liverpudlian guitarist Joey Molland. His songwriting talent started to blossom with the group’s finest album, 1971’s Straight Up. Molland contributed five songs to the group’s fourth platter including “I’d Die Babe,” “Sweet Tuesday Morning” and “Suitcase.” Joey continued to play and write as Badfinger motored through the ’70s recording and touring. But great albums like 1974’s Wish You Were Here were met with record company and personal mismanagement. And in 1975, the group’s leader, Pete Ham, tragically passed away. Molland eventually left the group, returned, and left again to launch his own solo career. He’s played in various groups and under the name Joey Molland’s Badfinger since 1983. His several solo albums won critical acclaim but nothing could have prepared us for his latest album. Omnivore Recordings is proud to announce the release of Be True to Yourself, a tour de force pop album by Molland co-written with producer Mark Hudson (producer of last year’s Losst And Founnd by Harry Nilsson, also on Omnivore). The album is filled with delicious pop hooks and features musical contributions from Joey’s friends (Julian Lennon, Micky Dolenz, Jason Scheff and Steve Holley). With front and back cover photography by Julian Lennon, this album is a veritable feast for the eyes and ears! So, sit back and “take it all” in from one of the genre’s progenitors ... Be True to Yourself by Joey Molland. Track Listing: 1. This Time 2. Better Tomorrow 3. Rainy Day Man 4. Heaven 5. All I Want To Do 6. I Don’t Wanna Be Done With You 7. All I Do Is Cry 8. NRBQ has been around for over 50 years, flying under the radar, all the while blending rock, jazz, blues, rockabilly, country and whatever else they see fit, into their own unique brand of music. The band teamed up with Omnivore Recordings several years ago, and that collaboration has netted a career-spanning, 5-disc collection called High Noon, and a 5-song EP, Happy Talk, among other great releases. The latest partnership is the band’s first-ever rarities collection, entitled In-Frequencies. This new, 16-track set literally spans the band’s entire career, starting with a sound check (recorded in a bowling alley!) that dates back to 1968 all the way to 2018 and the band’s version of the classic standard “April Showers.” We chat with band leader and keyboardist Terry Adams about some of the crazy stories behind rarities, like “Sho’ Need Love,” performed by the Dickens (who were actually NRBQ roadies); “Orioles,” a track written for, but never given to, the Baltimore baseball team; and their unlikely cover of “Chapel of Love.” Plus he tells us of a new NRBQ album that should be issued early next year.

David Ball is one of our best traditional country singers, a regular on the Grand Ole Opry and that rare classic indie who had big radio hits in two different decades. But before he twanged us up with Thinkin' Problem, in his well-spent youth, he was bass player and singer in Uncle Walt's Band, one of the most exceptional and under-appreciated ensembles in roots music history. The acoustic trio was made up of Champ Hood on fiddle and Walter Hyatt on guitar. All three contributed to the complex sound and stellar songwriting, but it was Walter Hyatt's peculiar energy and intellect that stamped the group with his name and personality. Uncle Walt's Band's biggest fans were some of the biggest names in their base in Austin TX, including Lyle Lovett and Marcia Ball. They were truly something, but eventually they went their separate ways. Walter Hyatt died in a plane crash in 1996. Hood died of cancer in 2001. Big Star’s first two LPs were full of chiming guitars, heavy drums and melodic hooks, yet somehow both albums failed to meet the high expectations. Those failures loomed large as Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens went to work on their next project.Eventually called Third or Sister Lovers, the songs recorded for these sessions seemed at times to be the polar opposite of their first two records - alternating between haunting moments of despair, and fragile beauty. The album, never officially completed, has been issued over the years in many forms and track listings. This week our guest is Vicki Peterson of the Bangles. Vicki joins us to talk about the new archival release, Ladies and Gentlemen...The Bangles!, which is being released by Omnivore Recordings on June 24. The 16 track collection pulls together a hefty stack of rarities from the '80s, including the band's first single, early demo recordings, live tracks and all of the songs from their self-titled debut EP, marking the first time that it has been available on physical media since its release on vinyl in 1982. As Peterson told us during the conversation, the group's archives were, as she put it with a laugh, "far-flung." "We had to dig up a lot of this stuff," she says. "Luckily, my brother, who is an audiophile and a recording engineer/masterer, he had a lot of the early versions, because he actually recorded some of the early demos with us. For instance, the 'Bitchen Summer' track, he was a teenager, I think, at the time. So he helped us track down a lot of stuff we had. Bill Inglot [also] helped, you know, we literally had to find the original masters of the EP." It was that EP that provided a good amount of the inspiration for putting this collection together. "It sort of sparked from a long-seeded desire to have the EP available again. In my heart, I just wanted it available in a physical form," she says. "We just wanted to sort of reintroduce it to the world, because we’re proud of it and it was really the birth of the Bangles in a lot of ways. It just kind of encapsulates some of the things that brought of us together initially musically and it has been recently something we’ve been playing. We’ve been dipping into this collection for our live shows in the last year or so, just because it’s so much fun to play. It expanded from there and we looked into what exists of our archives and found some other examples of ‘baby Bangles’ stuff.” We discuss those early beginnings during today's interview and Peterson also shares what she's got on tap musically, both with the Bangles and in her own work outside of the group and towards the end of our chat, there's a great story about how the Bangles' version of "Hazy Shade of Winter" came together with an interesting twist that might surprise you. The Bangles will be playing shows later this summer and as Peterson tells us, they've got some other things in the works as well that folks can look forward to. Fans can stay in tune via the band's official website and Facebook page to find out more details as things are announced. Soul survivors the Bo-Keys have gone country, y'all. No, not really. Not totally. But they've taken a carefully selected batch of roots oriented, country music songs and re-imagined them as hip-shaking and heart-breaking soul numbers on their new album, Heartaches By The Number, available now on Omnivore Recordings. BSC contributor John Paul Keith is back with us to continue his series, Something On The Side. This week he looks at the Memphis Horns.

There's only one Bobby Rush. Honed and refined (or unrefined, depending on your point of view) through decades on the Chitlin' Circuit, his self-described "folk-funk" act has become a headlining attraction at festivals and events around the world. But this week we've got something a little different - Bobby Rush, stripped down and raw, backed only by Super Chikan on guitar, and singing his hits and telling the stories behind the songs. Bobby has a career-spanning box set titled Chicken Heads: A 50 Year History Of Bobby Rush coming out on November 27, on Omnivore Recordings. BSC contributor John Paul Keith will also be joining us to continue his series, Made In Memphis.

TV Eyes was a short lived supergroup featuring Jason Falkner & Roger Manning Jr, who spent time in the power pop band Jellyfish, and drummer Brian Reitzell, who was in the equally melodic Redd Kross. The trio teamed up in the early 2000’s for a debut record that combined elements of early New Wave & Punk, with touches of their previous bands. The result was an album that should’ve turned heads. But, the band was never able to secure an American record label, so the record only came out in Japan. Now, long out of print and fetching top dollar on Ebay, Omnivore Recordings finally sets things right with the release of TV Eyes – not only including the original, nine song record, but also featuring four bonus tracks from an even more rare Japanese EP, Softcore, featuring remixes. We talk to Jason Falkner about the inspiration behind the project, plus what it was like to record with one of his big influences, Paul McCartney.
