In this video, we explore the evolution of Van Halen's concert setlists from their inaugural major tour in 1978 through their final performances in 2015. We'll look at how the band's early setlists focused on high-energy tracks from their debut album, how their song choices evolved with Sammy Hagar's arrival in 1985, and how later tours featured a mix of deep cuts, live debuts, and iconic hits. From "Runnin' With the Devil" and "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love" to later live surprises like "Drop Dead Legs" and "Dirty Movies," Van Halen's setlists tell the story of a band that constantly evolved while staying true to its rock roots. In this interview on Seeing Them Live, the guest, Ben Apatow, shares his insights and experiences in the music world. Ben is an accomplished author of the books Metallica, the $24.95 Book, and Body Count, part of the Bloomsbury 33 1/3 series. Ben's writing has been featured in various well-known music publications. He begins by recounting his first concert experience, seeing Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead at RFK Stadium in 1995, a formative event for him. He also highlights memorable concerts, including two Prince shows at Madison Square Garden, citing Prince as an extraordinary performer. However, he also shares his most disappointing concerts: Bad Brains and a recent Jane's Addiction show, noting specific incidences that led to his disappointment with these performances. The Jane's Addiction show, in particular, was tarnished by Perry Farrell's visible struggle, which affected the overall performance quality and led to tour cancellations shortly after.Transitioning to his literary works, Ben discusses the events around his book Body Count, which covers Body Count's controversial debut album featuring the song Cop Killer. The song elicited backlash from police unions, the Senate, and even the President, leading to its removal from the album after only three months. Ben details the dichotomy of the intense reactions to Cop Killer and the larger issues of censorship and societal fears in the early 1990s.Regarding his book on Metallica, Ben describes its comprehensive coverage, spanning the band's history, individual members, concerts, and broader cultural impact. He also delves into the influence of punk and metal within their music. Ben emphasizes the significance of word-of-mouth and live performances in Metallica's rise to popularity and reflects on how their approach to live shows continues to engage and expand their fan base. He concludes by expressing his enthusiasm for writing these books and outlining potential future projects, including collaborations and new biographies.BANDS: AC/DC, Bob Dylan, Body Count, Fiona Apple, Fishbone, Iron Maiden, Living Color, Metallica, Patti Smith, Prince, Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, The Grateful Dead, The Kinks, The Ramones, Ultimate Classic Rock, Velvet Underground.VENUES:RFK Stadium, Madison Square Garden, Alpine Valley, Navy Pier, Salt Shed, Lollapalooza. He can also be heard regularly as the co-host of the long-running Record Player podcast with Matt Wardlaw. Jeff Giles is an experienced culture writer and editor who's been featured in a long list of publications including Paste Magazine, the Village Voice, American Songwriter, Ultimate Classic Rock, and Rotten Tomatoes. Jeff Giles makes his debut as a novelist with Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane. What would you do if the belief you'd dedicated your life to turned out to be completely, hilariously wrong? And what if you only found out just how wrong you'd been after you died in one of the most humiliating ways possible? These are the questions facing Langley Powell, world-renowned debunker of paranormal phenomena, after he's flattened by a falling piano. Loath as he is to admit it, he has become a ghost — but before he can even come to terms with his bizarre new reality, he's thrown into a dangerous mission to save the very fabric of existence. Can Langley believe the people he's supposed to trust? Is this all really the fault of the disgraced magician who made him a skeptic in the first place? And how many insults will he have to bear from Frank, the foulmouthed, pint-sized government agent who's sworn to protect him along the way?Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane, out now via Humorist Books, is part supernatural comedy, part mystery, and part absurd history lesson. On Langley and Frank's journey, they're just as likely to meet up with Albert Einstein, J. Edgar Hoover, or Tom Petty as they are to confront the forces of supernatural evil or a president who really, really likes Ferris Bueller's Day Off. My first novel, this is the cracked reflection of a writing career that's spanned several decades and seen me covering everything from daytime dramas to beer while publishing thousands of essays and interviews about and with a diverse array of musicians and filmmakers. Jeff Giles Vroom Vroom Veer Show Summary In this episode of Vroom Vroom Veer, hosted by Jeff Smith, guest Jeff Giles discusses his debut novel, "Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane." The episode begins with a scripted introduction by narrator Tim Paige, highlighting the podcast's focus on stories about veering away from a scripted life into more fulfilling directions. The conversation between Smith and Giles begins with some light banter before delving into the details of Giles' novel. Giles explains the plot, which centers around a renowned debunker of paranormal phenomena who becomes a ghost and finds himself annoyed by his new existence. He shares his excitement about completing his first novel, especially at the age of fifty, and details his writing process during the COVID-19 lockdown. Giles recounts his struggle to find a literary agent and ultimately getting his book published by Humorous Books during an open submission period. He also reflects on his previous experience self-publishing a nonfiction book about the ABC daytime drama "One Life to Live." The discussion veers into Giles' diverse professional background, which includes working as a music reviewer from a young age, running a record label, and his various jobs before becoming a novelist. Giles shares insights from his life's unexpected turns, or "veers," which brought him significant changes and new opportunities. Smith and Giles touch on topics like the challenges of the publishing industry, the role of persistence in achieving literary success, and how changes in media and technology have affected their careers. They also discuss the emotional aspects of receiving rejection and the importance of resilience. As the conversation concludes, Giles provides information on how listeners can access his work and connect with him online, directing them to his website and other online platforms. The episode wraps up with Tim Paige thanking the listeners and inviting them to tune in for more episodes of Vroom Vroom Veer. Connections LangleyPowell.com Jefitoblog.com
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jeff Giles, author of the book Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane. An experienced culture writer and editor who's been featured in a long list of publications including Paste Magazine, the Village Voice, American Songwriter, Ultimate Classic Rock, and Rotten Tomatoes, Jeff makes his debut as a novelist with Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane. Although it's his first novel, Langley Powell is Jeff's third book, following Llanview in the Afternoon: An Oral History of One Life to Live and Uncle John's Beer-Topia: A Heady Brew of Beer Miscellany. He can also be heard regularly as the co-host of the long-running Record Player podcast with Matt Wardlaw. When Jeff isn't working on his next project, he's probably either running off yesterday's calories or playing guitar (badly). Jeff lives in New Hampshire with his wife, two children, and a pair of dogs. In my book review, I stated Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane is a humorous fantasy - another combination I had never read but truly enjoyed. It was sort of Harry Potter "esque" with far more tongue-in-cheek references and great bits of history trivia thrown in. The story starts with Langley's death - he is crushed by a falling piano. Langley spent his entire life debunking the idea of ghosts, magic, and anything you couldn't see with your own eyes or prove with science. However, when he becomes a ghost, he realizes he's been wrong. Before he can wrap his mind around his error, he finds himself on a quest to save mankind by finding his childhood hero - the magician who failed and thrust Langley toward his lifelong obsession of proving magic doesn't exist. This dual timeline story moves quickly, has great characters, and lots of laughs. However, it also causes the reader to think about what is important in life and what holds the universe together. I highly recommend this book. On the 73rd episode of Dorm Damage With Tom & Zeus the guys review an article from Ultimate Classic Rock, "Who Are The Big 4 Of Hair Metal?" This Ultimate Classic Rock article identifies 4 bands as the "Big 4" of hair metal. The guys discuss this list and breakdown the qualifications of each. They then discuss other bands that could or should be on this list and what makes a "hair band." A fun topic on a polarizing term (right or wrong) for the music of that era. Part supernatural comedy, part mystery, and part history, with throughlines of philosophy, pathos, and wackiness, it concerns the afterlife adventures of the world's most reknowned skeptic and debunker, who finds himself on a spiritual plane tasked with preventing a dark force from undoing all of existence. Along the way, Langley meets Albert Einstein, Tom Petty, a goofy president, a surly toddler, and his childhood hero / disgraced magician. This is the first novel by Jeff Giles, a pop culture writer whose work has appeared on Paste, Rotten Tomatoes, Ultimate Classic Rock, and Popdose. He's the host of The Record Player podcast. Jeff Giles has written about pop culture for Popdose, Ultimate Classic Rock, Paste, the Village Voice, and Rotten Tomatoes, hosts The Record Player podcast and is the author of the books Uncle John's Beer-Topia and Llanview in the Afternoon: An Oral History of One Life to Live. This episode is a must for both Prince fans and casual listeners.
For this bonus episode, Emilio, Madeline, and Julian power up a communicator and call on the presence of Mike Duquette, an out-of-this-world pop culture writer based in Astoria, NY, to discuss Steven Spielberg's evergreen classic 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial'. Mike brings his encyclopedic knowledge of all things 'E.T.' for a panoramic look at the film and its legacy. The group covers the film's personal and inauspicious origins, its unusual (at the time of its release) foregrounding of children and childhood, the best-selling film novelization (and its authorized sequel?!), its status as a rare box-office behemoth that's also a stand alone movie, the Oscar-winning score by John Williams, and the little details that make 'E.T.' a film for the ages. Mike Duquette has worked for Legacy Recordings, Rhino Records, Allmusic, Ultimate Classic Rock, Discogs, Observer, uDiscover Music and Mondo Records, where he penned the liner notes to their 40th anniversary vinyl release of John Williams' score to E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. He founded The Second Disc, a website devoted to music reissues and box sets, in 2010, and writes about other music, movies and film novelizations at Duque's Delight. If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. Those songs are from three albums, Revenge through Psycho Circus. Tom & Zeus review both lists and discuss the selections. Don't miss the Ace goes shopping for clothes breakdown as well! Send us a Text Message. This is a flashback moment to our previous podcast, 1991: The Year AOR Ate Itself. For those of you who didn't hear that podcast series, you'll be interested to hear this episode, which aired July 5, 2021. In my memory (note: I'm making this up), we decided to celebrate Independence Day by talking about Foreigner's first album without Lou Gramm, Unusual Heat.Even though that's not true, we did have a lot of fun discussing Unusual Heat with our friend Ben Arthur, who brought a really interesting perspective as a fellow artist to this discussion. It was Jeff who had the idea overall for the AOR podcast and I'm really glad we did it. We had a lot of fun talking about some of our favorite albums from 1991 and who knows, maybe we'll visit another year from the '90s -- or even the '80s -- one of these days. In the meantime, there's 12 other episodes of this '91 'cast if you enjoy what you hear today. Dig in!We've both been tied up with life stuff, but will be back with a fresh episode this week -- and it's another one of our favorite albums (I don't think I'm wrong in saying that, but we'll find out, won't we?). In the meantime, enjoy this conversation regarding a Foreigner album you've probably never heard!P.S. Ben is back with a new season of his SongWriter podcast. Check out the initial episode here!Related:An article at Ultimate Classic Rock from Jeff and Matt regarding Unusual Heat, featuring interviews with Johnny Edwards and Mick Jones. Support the Show.

On this episode we share Kelly Clarkson's undeniably cool cover of Metallica, new music from Foghat, a Michael McDonald story that may or may not be in his memoir, and we discuss Ultimate Classic Rock's list of the Top 20 Hard Rock and Metal albums from 1989. We also play our new favorite hypothetical game, “Mixtape”, and we climb the Wall of Tunes for a hidden gem duo that only made one record and then split. #kellyclarkson #metallica #michaelmcdonald #eastmountainsouth #mixtapehttps://www.facebook.com/obrienanddoug/ https://instagram.com/obrien_and_doug

On this episode we hear new music from Deep Purple, David Gilmour, Richie Sambora and Motley Crue; we read Ultimate Classic Rock's list of the 50 Greatest Power Ballads in Rock History (we disagree with a lot of it) and we climb the Wall of Tunes for a band of friends out of Colorado who happen to be one of our favorites. And we end with a Dad joke! Namaste! #richiesambora #deeppurple #bigheadtoddhttps://www.facebook.com/obrienanddoug/ https://instagram.com/obrien_and_doug
On this episode we talk about who is actually is on the list of Rock Hall of Fame nominees, new releases for the month of May, a new song from Motley Crue since parting ways with Mick Mars, and the song Jon Bon Jovi would sing if he knew it was his last…all according to Ultimate Classic Rock. We climb the Wall of Tunes for an album that ended a band in its most classic form….aaaand we contemplate a new band name. #rockhall #motleycrue #bonjovi #journeyhttps://www.facebook.com/obrienanddoug/ https://instagram.com/obrien_and_doug

UCR's Allison Rapp is back with Jeff and Matt for another episode of The 1974 Project. This time, they're talking about On the Border by Eagles and digging into a bunch of related (and yeah, sometimes, unrelated topics). For instance, why do so many people hate the Eagles? Why do people get worked up about calling them "the Eagles" instead of "Eagles" when the band is discussed. What was it like covering the recent trial regarding the allegedly stolen Hotel California lyrics and being in the presence of Don Henley? Allison shares details about that experience. For those of you who take a drink every single time that Jeff says, "It's fine," you're in luck once again this episode.Because this is The Record Player, there are also stray references to Michael McDonald and Chicago. P.S. Make sure that you read Michael's upcoming memoir, because it rules. Our thanks to Allison as always for joining us. You can catch up on her latest work at Ultimate Classic Rock by following this link. We hope you enjoy this episode! Some of our favorite lists from Allison -- including a couple mentioned in this episode:55 Times Albums Shared a NameShelved Songs: 22 Songs That Took Years to Complete24 Songs About Managers and Record ExecutivesOh yeah, please don't forget to read Jeff's stuff at Jefitoblog. On the 54th episode of Dorm Damage With Tom & Zeus the guys review an article from Ultimate Classic Rock, "Top 15 Sunset Strip Bands." We all can picture the scene when you hear "Sunset Strip." A crazy concert by Van Halen or Motley Crue with girls, mayhem and debauchery. The Sunset Strip has been the area where many legendary bands got their start, especially during the "hair metal" era. But historically many classic rock bands were born there as well. The guys discuss the newest Ultimate Classic Rock list and take you down to this legendary place. We couldn't miss out on the chance to post a new episode of The Record Player on a rare Leap Day!As one of our comrades said very recently, "Happy Leap Year, to all who celebrate!"We're back with the latest installment in The 1974 Project, our ongoing collaboration with Ultimate Classic Rock spotlighting a variety of albums that were released, as you might have guessed, in 1974.UCR's Nick DeRiso joins Jeff and Matt to discuss What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits by the Doobie Brothers. The wide-ranging conversation touches on a number of topics including a Doobies song that was once compared to both Chicago and Eagles, bands with two drummers, the Doobie Liner and five-time Grammy Award winner Michael McDonald. There's more, but those are the dubious highlights of our discussion. Nick also shares details regarding Journey: Worlds Apart, his new best-selling book about Journey and its many eras and side projects. Our thanks to Nick for taking the time!
The latest episode of The 1974 Project finds Jeff and Matt teaming up with Matthew Wilkening of Ultimate Classic Rock to discuss the self-titled debut album by Kiss, which was released on February 18, 1974. But the conversation covers a lot of territory involved with just being a music fan. Sneaking out of the house to go buy albums. Parents putting their foot down regarding bands/music they find to be objectionable. How the albums that you're hearing can change your impressions (positively or negatively) regarding a band/genre. Rogue school bus drivers helping to facilitate further musical education. On the subject of Kiss, we talk about the merits and stereotypes surrounding the first album. The album cover that could have been (but unfortunately, was not). The underrated Kiss record that more fans should embrace. Should you listen to the entire Kiss discography from top to bottom? What is "Nothin' to Lose" really about? How do you feel about '80s Kiss? An alternate reality where Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons follow through with Wicked Lester and Kiss never happens. Our thanks to Matthew for joining us!Related:Were Kiss Really Asked to Dress Like Clowns on Their First Album: https://ultimateclassicrock.com/kiss-clown-album-cover/'Detroit Rock City' Movie Pretty Much Ends Kiss Reunion:https://ultimateclassicrock.com/kiss-detroit-rock-city-movie/

Bob Dylan finally reunited with the Band officially to record the Planet Waves album in 1974. The stories behind the creation of Planet Waves and the events of the subsequent tour will make you wish that time machines were a real thing.Planet Waves is just one of a number of albums marking its 50th anniversary here in 2024. As it happens, Ultimate Classic Rock recently collected 50 albums turning 50 this year and Jeff had an idea: Why don't we spend part of each month in 2024 discussing some of those albums at the 50-year mark? This conversation about Planet Waves is the first installment. Jeff and Matt welcome UCR's Allison Rapp to talk about a bunch of Bob-related subjects as they examine how Planet Waves came together. How does it stand up against the rest of Bob's catalog today? Was David Geffen ultimately the villain? Can you imagine these songs without the Band playing on them?We also discuss Bob's feelings about the '74 tour -- and dig into some fun Bob quirks. Subway sandwiches! Welding! Al Jarreau! Plus, Georgia Satellites guitarist Rick Richards drops in (virtually) to share some amusing Bob anecdotes from his personal experiences. Our thanks to Allison for joining us to spend a bit of time in the Dylan rabbit hole!Related:Here is the UCR article that Jeff wrote (and doesn't remember) about Planet Waves. We mention Ray Padgett's excellent Dylan newsletter and if you're not already reading that, now's a great time to jump in as he's going through each show of the '74 tour.
