Send us a Text Message. The Voice Of Autograph, Steve Plunkett Talks New Long Awaited Second Solo Album,"Straight Up"#singersongwriter #autograph #steveplunkett #newalbum #straightup The year was 1984, the year of the cassette boombox and the Sony Walkman, and the year when a little band from Los Angeles invited the world to “Turn Up The Radio.” That band was Autograph, fronted by the fiery-haired powerhouse vocalist Steve Plunkett, and their single became an immediate smash hit from the debut album Sign In Please and was featured in numerous films and TV shows of that era.But as big as Autograph was, it could not contain the creative energy of Plunkett. He soon found a new career as an in-demand songwriter for bands such as The Go-Go's, Edgar Winter and Vixen as well as doing production work for Cyndi Lauper and Graham Nash. He released his first solo album in 1991, an album that showed Plunkett's growing confidence in both his own songwriting and studio techniques. Now, more than 3 decades later, Plunkett is ready to release his second solo album, a smokin' hot collection called Straight Up.This 10-track all-killer, no-filler album cranks up the volume knob to 11 and shows that Plunkett hasn't lost an ounce of the passion and power that made him a hard rock hero! Just check out the album's first single, “Rock Machine,” which kicks off with a driving guitar lick and chanted lyric that lunges straight at the listener's jugular. It's a powerblast of pure, unfiltered rock mania as only Plunkett knows how to deliver.Stream/download the single: https://orcd.co/steveplunkett_rockmachineReflecting on the album, Plunkett declares, “With Straight Up, I wanted to get back to rock basics. No parameters or targets – just the kind of real rock that got me excited back in the day. EPISODE 18 - EXTERNAL Version for Non-Spotify Listeners! The band began in 1983 originally as a solo project for singer-songwriter/guitarist Steve Plunkett (also known as "Plunk"), who had recently left the band Silver Condor, due to his frustration with their lack of interest in recording his songs. Plunkett then began playing and recording his own material with a group of his musician friends, most of whom had previously played with him in other bands. On lead guitar was Steve Lynch, who had played with Plunkett in the band Looker, and who has a distinctive two-handed, fretboard-tapping technique, which eventually won him the "Guitar Solo of the Year" award from Guitar Player magazine for his work on Autograph's signature song, "Turn Up The Radio." Bassist Randy Rand knew Plunkett from their days together in Wolfgang, a club band in Los Angeles, which has been described as a local legend and of which Kevin Dubrow (lead singer of Quiet Riot) said, "They smoked us all....They got better response than us and Van Halen." Steve Isham, keyboard player and longtime friend of Plunkett's, had earlier played with Holly Penfield, and on drums, Plunkett called on Keni Richards, his bandmate from John Doe, and whose friendship with Van Halen lead singer David Lee Roth led to Autograph's big break. Over time, this group of musicians recording together took the form of an actual band. Plunkett chose the name "Autograph" for the band, having been inspired by hearing Def Leppard's similarly-titled song "Photograph" on the radio. They recorded their first demos in late 1983, but gave copies of the demo to a few friends only. One of these friends, Andy Johns, a record producer, played their demo for David Lee Roth of Van Halen, who subsequently invited the band to open for them in their 1984 tour. The band rose to prominence as an opening act for Van Halen on their 1984 tour, an act of distinction for an unsigned band. Autograph signed a contract with RCA Records following a performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1984. The band's debut album, Sign In Please, was completed and released in October of that year, but did not make an appearance on any record charts until January, 1985. Sign In Please contains the band's only major hit and signature song, "Turn Up the Radio." Interestingly, according to Autograph's Turn Up the Web website, the tune was the last song recorded for the album, and the band members were initially very lukewarm toward it. The song became a top-30 hit, pushing album sales past the gold mark (500,000 copies sold). The album later went platinum. "Turn Up The Radio" was featured on an episode of Miami Vice entitled "Little Prince." The band also recorded a song titled "You Can't Hide From the Beast Inside" for the film Fright Night. Another fun episode of TSORR, this one went out on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 23 June 2022.  It was episode 25 so we are nearly halfway through Season 5 already.  Kicking off with Dee Snider and ‘Mask', and then Lita Ford with ‘The Mask' we symbolically said cheers to wearing masks in SA at last.  Or until the next pandemic in 2060 but I don't think flu will be around by then anyway, or me for that matter.  Moving on.  We checked out Autograph with a very fresh sounding 2017 live version of ‘Turn Up The Radio' and then got down to business with some Megadeth, Saxon, and Guns 'n' Roses.  The new Megadeth called The Sick, The Dying and the Dead is on pre-release but we took in a track off United Abominations called 'Washington is Next.  The G 'n' Roses track came off Chinese Democracy, just for a change. To rebalance for a Guns 'n' Roses without Slash we played a track off his It's 5 'o Clock Somewhere album.   There was a call for some metal so I played Asking Alexandria which was met with Oom-ish howls which a stated with Metallica's 'The Thing That Should Not Be'.  More howls, so we got back to old-school metal in the form of ACDC and Rainbow.  The world has changed a lot.   Other than that we paid tribute to Clarens Clemons who died 11 years ago this week.  'Born to Run' did the honours there.  We heard the obligatory Tom Petty track and some Marilyn Manson with 'New Model No 15' off Mechanical Animals.  Rammstein hit us with 'Haifisch' which means shark in English and then we celebrated a historic victory in which the forces of good triumphed over the forces of evil at the CCMA, Slayer with 'Richard Hung Himself' marked that spot.No SA music in this episode!!!  can't believe it, it just got too busy.  Next week I promise.  Other than that there were two good releases this week Machine Head with a track called 'Unhallowed' and In Flames with 'State of Slow Decay', heavy metal is alive and kicking ass.  We went out quietly with Judas Priest's beautiful ballad titled 'Never Forget' which reminds us that they will keep going until they no longer can and that they will never forget the support from the fans, it's a bitter-sweet reminder of the fragility of it all.  Tomm Waits closed the gate with 'Gun Street Girl' off raindogs.   Artists featured:  Dee Snider, Lita Ford, Kris Barras Band, Autograph, Bad Company, Megadeth, Praying Mantis, Rhino Bucket, Saxon, Dangerous Toys, Guns ‘n' Roses, Asking alexander, Metallica, ACDC, Rainbow, Slash's Snake Pit, Soil, Slayer, System of a Down, Soundgarden, Bush, The Jam, The Damned,  Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Windowpane, Skid Row, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Cold Chisel, Uriah Heep, Motörhead, Machine Head, In Flames, Judas Priest, Tom Waits

The Canadian Geeks have come up with yet another ridiculous idea. It seems they continue to come up with ridiculous ways of selecting music to enjoy on the show. It worked out pretty well the first time, so let's do it again! In a spin off of the “six degrees of Kevin Bacon” , episode #115 delivers SIX DEGREES OF HEAVY METAL PART 2! Wallygator came up with the idea early one morning. That lead to an expletive filled phone call as he attempted to explain the intricacies of how the episode would unfold. The planning for this episode would have made for very entertaining show in of itself. The concept is really simple. The geeks used Wally’s Ipod to randomly select the starting song. The metal gods randomly selected “Feel Your Love” from Van Halen! Thanks goodness it didn’t select something from Wallygator’s secret Banarama collection. From there each geek had to select a song that somehow connected to Van Halen's "Feel Your Love" From there Wallygator had to connect the Meister‘s selection and the Meister had to connect Wallygator‘s. The process continues until there were 12 songs all interconnected. They kept their “connections” a secret and were revealed during the recording. How does Autograph's "Turn Up The Radio" connect to Vince Neil's "Your Invited But Your Friends Can't Come" ? You will soon find out right here.

BINGE AND PODCAST: “Uncle Buck the series, that’s not right.” (1990) While most of us in this modern age prefer streaming our entertainment at home, there was a time when we looked forward to piling into the family station wagon, stocking up on Kit Kats and checking out the big-screen exploits of John Candy. The 1990s were a big movie-going era and, in an attempt to replicate that endeavor, networks took some of these cinematic hits and transmogrified them into weekly programming. But should they have? Bob and Tim wonder this aloud as this sit through Sandra Bullock in WOKING GIRL, Jennifer Aniston in FERRIS BUELLER and the desire to forcibly stab out their ear-drums with a cereal spoon in UNCLE BUCK. Its big screen comedies as small screen sitcoms and … unfortunately … one of them is Uncle Buck. 00:00:00  PRE-SHOW PRATTLE - and already not liking Uncle Buck00:00:42  INAUDIBLE DAUGHTERS - and breaking down the Binge And Podcast00:04:35  NOT QUITE WORKING GIRL - did anyone show Sandra Bullock the movie?00:12:48  NEWBERN GLORY - and maybe a little too much about Sal00:21:04  WORKING IN THE 90S - and a Wings reference00:23:17  FERRIS BUELLER CAN’T LOOSE - and kids say the John Hughest things 00:28:17  TITULAR PROBLEM - liking everyone but the main character 00:41:50  A PRAYER FOR KEVIN MEANEY - if Uncle Buck’s hat fits … wear it?00:47:12  BUCKING IT UP - and that friend’s name was “Skank”00:55:14  FAUX SEASON PREMIERES - Bob and Tim pitch a couple shows to no one 01:02:38  CLOSINGS - contacts, plugs and no catch phrase01:05:50  UNLICENSED AUDIO - So damn scaryStruggle like Bob and Tim did through the topics of today’s episode with WORKING GIRL EPISODE 05: IT’S ONLY LOVE, FERRIS BUELLER EPISODE 08: SLOANE AGAIN, NATURALLY and UNCLE BUCK EPISODE EPISODE 05: BUCK TO SCHOOL (sorry).Witness why Tim was briefly so excited to see George Newbern in the WOKING GIRL episode with his opening credit lip-synch performance TURN UP THE RADIO (as actually performed by Kip Lennon) in the in the opening credit sequence to the 1988 made-for-tv Disney movie DOUBLE SWITCH.See how hard it was to watch someone else play Dante with this ORIGINAL UNAIRED 1996 PILOT TO CLERKS.And finally learn to hate the concept of melodic composition realizing that someone actually took time from their brief existence in reality to compose THE UNCLE BUCK OPENING THEME SONG. His fourth studio album would move Bryan Adams from a successful singer-songwriter to super-stardom. The multi-platinum album, “Reckless” is packed with hits, as six of the ten tracks would hit the charts including the evergreen hit “Summer of 69.” Adams took some time off following his multi-year tour "Cuts Like a Knife," and that brief retreat would result in a burst of creativity that would result in many of this album's hits. Friend of the show Vann Mathis joins us for this podcast. “One Night Love Affair” This track was the fifth single to hit the charts, and the title is pretty self-explanatory. “Run to You” This debut single from the album starts with a great guitar riff, and describes an ongoing affair, unlike the first track we profiled. “Somebody” This track was the second single off the album with a straightforward rock sound and a catchy chorus. “Kids Wanna Rock” We pick up the pace, leaving the love songs behind with this strong rock track. Even though not released as a single, it still made it to number 42 on the charts. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Theme from “A Nightmare on Elm Street” The horror movie that would become a classic was released in November 1984. STAFF PICKS: “I Can't Drive 55” by Sammy Hagar Hagar's protest song against the National Maximum Speed Law is enough to get your foot pressing a little heavier on the gas. Bruce explains it was inspired by a late night ticket for driving 62 in a 55 that Sammy Hagar received. “Girls with Guns” by Tommy Shaw Vann Mathis' staff pick is a fast paced throwback to the 80's from Styx alumnus Tommy Shaw. Styx band mate Dennis DeYoung was also doing solo work at the time. The video was filmed from one camera in a continuous take. “Hello Again” by The Cars Rob presents this fourth single from the album "Heartbeat City." The Cars were a huge hit on MTV, with well produced, awared winning videos. They balanced well between pop hooks and experimental new wave music. “Turn Up The Radio” by Autograph Wayne's staff pick is a mid-80's rock anthem. This is the lead single off the album "Sign in Please," and was their only top 40 hit. "Day in, day out, all week long, things go better with rock!" “Sea of Love” by The Honeydrippers Brian goes in a sentimental direction with Robert Plant's cover of Phil Phillips from Lake Charles, Louisiana. Phillips original version was a one-hit wonder in 1959. Paul Shaffer was on keyboards in The Honeydrippers. LAUGH TRACK: Ray Stevens - “The Mississippi Squirrel Revival” Ray Stevens takes us out this week with his memories of what happened when a squirrel got loose in the church.

Hello and Welcome! My guests today are Lisset Diaz and Miguel Comas, two members of the terrific young band, the Sweet Lizzie Project. These guys have a story to tell! Some time ago, PBS went to Cuba to learn more about the music scene there. That led to the migration of Lisset, Miguel, and the rest of the Sweet Lizzie Project band to the United States. Here's the amazing story of how it happened! I saw the band at a small house party about two months ago and I was instantly hooked. The band resides in Nashville, and their music uniquely reflects influences from both residences. Yet it is unequivocally and uniquely their own and I can't recommend it enough. Diaz is a powerhouse of a singer; Miguel Comas produces their music, and adds his signature lead guitar to the mix; and together they lead this young band that you need to learn more about.  And here's your opportunity! The songs you'll hear are Something, from the debut album Heaven, and their recently released duet with Raul Malo and the Mavericks, entitled Flower's In The Seed. Diaz is a truly unique stylist as these songs attest; but make sure you check out the entirety of the Heaven album. It's been in my heavy rotation for some time now, and for good reason! And a new album, entitled Technicolor, is coming soon! You can find all of it on their comprehensive website. They also have a Facebook page and they're on Instagram. And check out the first rate videos for both Flower's In the Seed and Turn Up The Radio - a true classic, as we discuss on the show. Both - and many others - can be found here. Thank you Lisset and Miguel for joining me. And to all of you who like the show, please share it, rate it, and all those good things. In the meantime, enjoy getting to know the Sweet Lizzie Project!

This week on No Sleep 'til Sudbury I'm thrilled to host one of my favourite guitar players from my early teen years, Autograph's Steve Lynch. Steve was one of the earliest innovators of fretboard tapping. After hearing Autograph's 80s megahit "Turn Up The Radio" in my car recently, I called Steve up to do the show and talk about the songs that make his skin vibrate.      Steve brings in some great tunes and recounts some cool stories from his Autograph days on Los Angeles' Sunset Strip, including how the band shot guns in the studio to incorporate into their snare drum mixes, and how Van Halen's tour manager warned Steve not to tap during their set because it was "Eddie's thing" when they opened for VH in 1985.  Lynch's playlist: The Rolling Stones - Sympathy for The Devil Led Zeppelin - Ramble On Charlie Sexton - Cry Little Sister Jimi Hendrix - The Wind Cries Mary  Small Faces - Itchycoo Park The Beatles - And I Love Her Led Zeppelin - The Rain Song

Keeping up with the time-honored tradition of Party Favorz, we've compiled a vibrant mix to commemorate the occasion: BITCH ...I'm Madonna Volumes 1 & 2. Initially split into two separate episodes, the volumes have now been fused into one powerhouse podcast, creating a pulsating tribute that traverses Madonna's storied discography. The Lure of Bootlegs Every year, the crop of bootleg remixes of Madonna's vast catalog seems to multiply, revealing new perspectives on classic and current hits alike. These bootlegs serve as the foundation of BITCH ...I'm Madonna Volumes 1 & 2, enabling DJs to sift through Madonna's iconic work and lend it a fresh sound. The surprise factor? The abundance of bootlegs derived from Madonna's most recent albums, including the celebrated "Rebel Heart." A Nod to Recent Releases While this set honors Madonna's illustrious career, it leans heavily on her last four studio albums: MDNA, Hard Candy, Rebel Heart, and Confessions On a Dance Floor. One notable standout is "Wash All Over Me," remixed by DJ FmSteff, which adds an air of contemplative introspection to the upbeat playlist. Then there's "Holy Water," given a new life by Max & Sebh, transforming it into an almost ethereal dance anthem. The 90s and Beyond Alongside the most current bootlegs, BITCH ...I'm Madonna Volumes 1 & 2 skillfully weaves in gems from the '90s, striking a balance between past and present. Take "Erotica," for instance, masterfully remixed by Division 4; it injects a modern groove into the provocative original, showcasing Madonna's boundary-pushing artistry. Similarly, "Frozen," given an atmospheric overhaul by The TWIX Remix, lends a mesmerizing icy touch to the playlist. Both tracks act as timeless interludes, effectively connecting Madonna's historical musical influence with the modern flavors of today, all while ushering her legacy into the ears of a new generation of dance aficionados. The Global DJ Community The DJs who contribute to this tribute range from emerging talent to seasoned pros, each bringing their own flavor to the table. "Ghosttown," refashioned by Victor Dinaire & Bissen, and "Turn Up The Radio," reimagined by Bit Error, serve as prime examples. These remixes are not merely adjustments but creative reinterpretations that capture the essence of what makes Madonna a perennial favorite in the dance music world. The Collective Experience BITCH ...I'm Madonna Volumes 1 & 2 is more than a collection; it's an experience. Whether it's "Girl Gone Wild" remodeled by Offer Nissim o...
