My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is William R Douglas, author of the book The Sun of All Our Anger: Civil War 2.0. William R. Douglas is an award-winning novelist whose debut novel, The Death and Resurrection of Baseball: Echoes from a Distant Past, was recognized by two book award contests: Readers' Favorite and the Independent Author Network. His latest novel, The Sum of All Our Anger: Civil War 2.0, is a Speculative Fiction story set in 2061, a time when the nation's divisiveness and anger finally come to a boil after the inauguration of the first openly socialist President.   After obtaining a Journalism Degree in 1980, his career turned down the road of Information Technology, working for well-known companies: Mindscape Software, Moore Business Forms, EDS (Electronic Data Systems), IBM, Sears, Walgreens, DELL, and currently The Boeing Company. He could still enjoy writing in his career, whether it was technical documentation, websites, newsletters, or other material.   He lives an hour northwest of Chicago in the small town of McHenry, Illinois (population 27 thousand), with his wife Laurie and cat Peaches. They enjoy spending time with six kids and nine grandkids and are active in their local church.   In my book review, I stated The Sum of All Our Anger: Civil War 2.0 by William R Douglas is realistic domestic military thriller set about forty years in the future. This book was amazing. Horrifying. Thought-provoking. Disturbing. Anxiety-producing. And a must-read.   The Civil War is something we should never want to repeat in the United States, but with political parties who refuse to work together, name-calling, and "dig in our heels" ideologies, many fear this could be on the horizon. The Sum of All Our Anger looks at the United States in 2061 and shows readers a worst case scenario that includes states seceding from the Union, martial law, and the removal of the founding documents of our country.   Quite frankly, I had to put the book down several times and swallow hard before I could continue. Why? Because I could imagine this scenario playing out. And the results of a second Civil War would be beyond devastating. I hope you read this book, contemplate what you see, and do your part to effect change - regardless of which side of the aisle holds your vote.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author William R Douglas Website: https://www.authorwilliamrdouglas.com/ FB: @Author William R Douglas X:authorwilliamr IG: @williamrdouglas59   Purchase The Sun of All Our Anger: Civil War 2.0 on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/3Zv8LGO Ebook: https://amzn.to/4kzrysR   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Robert W Norris, author of the book The Good Lord Willing and the Creek Don't Rise. Robert W. Norris was born and raised in Humboldt County, California. In 1969, he entered the Air Force, subsequently became a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War, and served time in a military prison for refusing to fight in the war. In his twenties, he roamed across the United States, went to Europe twice, and made one journey around the world. In 1983, he landed in Japan, where he eventually became a professor at a private university, spent two years as the dean of students, and retired in 2016 as a professor emeritus.   Norris is the author of Looking for the Summer, a novel about a former Vietnam War conscientious objector's adventures and search for identity in Europe, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, and India in 1977; Toraware, a novel about the obsessive relationship of three misfits from different cultural backgrounds in 1980s Kobe, Japan; Autumn Shadows in August, an hallucinogenic mid-life crisis/adventure, and homage to Malcolm Lowry and Hermann Hesse; The Many Roads to Japan, a novella used as an English textbook in Japanese universities; and The Good Lord Willing and the Creek Don't Rise: Pentimento Memories of Mom and Me, a memoir and tribute to his mother. He has also written several articles on teaching English as a foreign language. He and his wife live near Fukuoka, Japan.   In my book review, I stated The Good Lord Willing and the Creek Don't Rise is a wonderful memoir about Robert's mother, Kay, as well as his own interesting life. This memoir spans 90+ years and gives readers a glimpse into the lives of two people who never quite followed the "rules" as set out by society.   Kay, twice divorced, spoke her mind, even when others thought she should keep quiet - just ask the Catholic priest who refused to give her communion. She raised her children with the same spirit - to know who they were and what they stood for along with a willingness to act. Kay was a lifelong learner, taking on getting a pilot's license, going back to school to become a legal secretary, writing poetry, drawing nature, and studying the Japanese language. She loved to travel and she loved her family.   I really enjoyed reading Robert's account of his own life and how his mother fit into the picture. I appreciated his candor - he didn't seem to have the need to paint himself in the perfect light, which means the reader gets to see his struggles and pains as well as his triumphs. Although Robert and I have very different opinions about life, I admire how he found his truth and then found a way to live that truth.   This is a fascinating memoir about a boy and his mom through the years. I think you'll enjoy it.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Robert W Norris Website: https://robertwnorris.com/ FB: @bob.norris.374   Purchase The Good Lord Willing and the Creek Don't Rise on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/3XNTS1L Ebook: https://amzn.to/4i1hXZZ   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Marj Charlier, author of the book The Candlemaker's Woman. Marj Charlier is the author of eleven novels and three novellas. The Rebel Nun (Blackstone 2021), based on the true story of a nun who led a rebellion in the sixth century, won first place in both fiction and historical fiction from the Colorado Independent Publishers Association awards in 2023. The Candlemaker's Woman was published by Sunacumen Press in 2024. She has taught memoir and fiction writing workshops at libraries, book festivals and OLLI programs, and has been a board member of several local writers' guilds, and enjoyed residencies at the Dorland Mountain Arts Colony and the Vashon Island Artist Residency. Marj began her writing career at daily and mid-size newspapers before joining the Wall Street Journal as a staff reporter in 1984. After twenty years in journalism, she began a second career in corporate finance before retiring to write novels.    In her book review, Carole O'Neill stated: “The Candlemaker's Woman takes place during the period of the barbarian migrations into the late Roman Empire. Not a period I read a lot about. My history lesson kept interfering with the memoir of a young girl sold into slavery by her mother for safe passage into Gaul. She promises to find her daughter as soon as they are able to cross the Rhine.   “As Melia waits for her mother's return, life with her new family consists of near starvation as she learns how to stretch scraps of food to avoid starvation. She even finds ways to live through the brutal sexual assaults during the nightly visits by her new master. Her only relief seems to come in learning how to make candles. She becomes an expert at the craft and uses her knowledge to her advantage when the soldiers come looking for slaves.   “Throughout the book Melia shows the character of a much older woman, learning to become strong while enduring the life of a slave. I found myself rooting for her as she ran through town searching for help in delivering her friend's baby.   “Marj's character descriptions are vivid and real. Her research is notable. Putting it down was harder than I thought. Waiting for a sequel might be asking too much.”   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Marj Charlier Website: www.marjcharlier.com FB: @MarjCharlierAuthor IG: @marjcharlier X: @AuthorMarj LinkedIn: @Marj Charlier   Purchase The Candlemaker's Woman on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/4jkXu3s Ebook: https://amzn.to/3FZ3aSr   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Penelope Holt, author of the book The Angel Scroll. Penelope was born and educated in England and now lives in New York. She is a novelist, playwright, business writer, and marketing executive, whose work has been performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, York Arts Center, and New York's American Folk Theater. In addition to writing fiction, The Angel Scroll, and The Apple, based on the controversial Herman Rosenblat Holocaust romance, Holt is a prolific writer, editor, and co-author of non-fiction, including Singing God's Work, the story of the Harlem Gospel Choir, Emotional Intelligence at Work, and many other works. She is married with two children.   In my book review, I stated The Angel Scroll is a wonderful women's fiction mystery full of mysticism and romance. You are going to love Claire, a recently widowed painter who manages to paint a masterpiece well-beyond her abilities. Although the piece brings her fame, she feels like a fraud, having painted something that brings everyone else peace when it brings her nothing but sadness. Despite this, she can't bear to part with it.   Enter recently widowed antiquarian, Richard. He believes Claire's painting is one-third of an ancient Christian prophecy, and that this might explain Claire's recent psychic abilities. Before long, the two are on an adventure taking them to Jerusalem, Rome, Siena, Glastonbury Tor, and New England.   Within these pages, you'll find intrigue, passion, greed, love, wisdom, good, and evil - like a microcosm of the world we live in! He is the author of three novels: Moneymaker, The False Favorite, and Slurry. He lives in Lexington, Kentucky, where he's hard at work on his next story.   In my book review, I stated Moneymaker is a page-turning Southern crime thriller set on the Georgia coast. We meet Mack, a surveillance expert, when he accepts a job in Savannah. The job is to keep his eyes on a package, and it soon becomes apparent this package contains drugs - and a lot of them. While in Savannah, Mack becomes attracted to Avery, a local exotic dancer, who just happens to be addicted to the drugs Mack is surveilling. And just to keep the story interesting, Josh lets us see the action from a third point of view - that of one of the bad guys named Jerry.   Even though the story takes place during one week, the plot moves along quickly, as we see the inner workings of drug smugglers and what they will do to ensure they get paid for their delivery. And throughout this week, you'll find yourself worrying about Mack, Avery, and yes, even Jerry!   If you like fast-paced stories with intrigue, guns, and a bit of romance, then you will enjoy this book.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Josh Boldt Website: http://joshboldt.com/ IG: @joshaboldt FB: @joshaboldt   Purchase Moneymaker on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/3E7G4bt Ebook: https://amzn.to/43PhK95   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? He was a Columnist at San Francisco's Nob Hill Gazette, attended the Stanford University Creative Writing Program, and is a graduate of Peabody College, Vanderbilt University, and MTSU.   He is an award-winning songwriter with two CDs, a Pandora radio station, credits on Country Music Television (CMT), BBC Radio, as well as radio airplay. Rick has rafted the Grand Canyon, the Salmon and Rogue Rivers as well as sailed throughout the Caribbean Sea.   In my book review, I stated Eight Pieces of Eight is a contemporary adventure full of mysticism, romance, and strong family ties. And let's not forget the treasure!   If you've ever wanted to go on a treasure hunt, then this book, the second in his series, is not to be missed. We soon find ourselves on a quest for lost Spanish treasure with Bev, her odd brother, her obsessed cousin, and a new-found boyfriend in a rural area filled with caves near Nashville Tennessee. Bev has inherited a sixth sense like her mother, and this sixth sense allows her to understand a mystical map that glows and changes offering clues to find a missing chest full of gold. But the map gains control of the owners, causing them to forsake all else for the possible treasure. Will the same thing happen to Bev when she comes into possession of the ancient map?   The twists and turns were fun and kept me guessing. And I learned quite a lot about Tennessee caves. The character development wasn't quite as deep as I would have liked and sometimes the dialogue seemed rushed, but even with these issues, I enjoyed the book and now want to know more. His writing has appeared in The Jerusalem Post, The Times of Israel, World Literature Today, and The Huffington Post. His short fiction has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, and has appeared in Isele Magazine, Vagabond, The Write Launch, Esoterica, Jewish Literary Journal, San Antonio Review, and other literary publications. He is the author of The Virtual Kibbutz, Valley of Thracians, The Burgas Affair, and Rakiya – Stories of Bulgaria.   In my book review, I stated Rakiya - Stories of Bulgaria is a collection of cultural short stories set in Bulgaria. In these short stories we follow such characters as pickpocketing Roma, a WWII veteran, refugees, authors, makers of rakiya, and hunters - all while learning about the rich history of the area.    As someone who knows little about the Bulgarian culture or the history, I was enchanted by the stories. I was also intrigued by the foods, drinks, mountains, and churches. By the time I was finished with the collection, I wondered if a trip to Bulgaria might be in order!   As an author, I was fascinated with how the author weaved these tales into a cohesive whole - and loved how a character from one story would inevitably end up in another. Despite being a series of short stories, it reads far more like a novel, with Bulgaria as the main character. Today on Online for Authors, guest-host Carole O'Neill interviews Audrey Gale, author of the book The Human Trial. Audrey Gale long dreamed of being a writer, but never anticipated the circuitous road she'd take to get there. After twenty-plus years in the banking industry, she grew tired of corporate gamesmanship and pursued her master's in fiction writing at the University of Southern California.   Her first novel, a legal thriller entitled The Sausage Maker's Daughters, was published under the name A.G.S. Johnson. The novel explores one woman's struggle to find her place amidst the upheaval of the radical 1960s. Her second, The Human Trial, is the first book in a medical-thriller trilogy inspired by Gale's own experiences with the gap between traditional medicine and approaches based on the findings of the great physicists of the 20th Century, like Einstein and Bohr. Both The Sausage Maker's Daughters and The Human Trial incorporate Gale's fascination with historical and scientific research, and always with women finding their places.   Gale lives in Los Angeles with her husband and dogs where she is found hiking the Santa Monica Mountains every chance she gets.   In her book review, Carole stated that The Human Trial showed that a small number of high school students graduate early and get accepted into a college program of their dreams. Very few graduate high school at 16 years old and go on to get a full-ride at Harvard University. However, Randy Archer, the son of a steel-mill worker in Pennsylvania, does just that.   Audrey, the author of The Human Trial, takes you back to the 1920s, against the backdrop of The Great Depression, and introduces us to Archer as he is still living at home with his father and older brothers. They all expect him to follow them to a life in the steel mill. He has another idea, but no financial way to fulfill that dream.   Gale describes how Archer defies the odds, with the help of his high school counselor and her friend at Harvard. She convinces Archer he will be mentored alone the way to a degree at the prestigious university unavailable to many.   During his years as a graduate student studying to become a pathology researcher, he meets a physics student, Adam Wakefield, working on his PhD. He's developed a much-advanced microscope which allows the two students to discover a way to offer a non-traditional healing method to terminal patients.   There is, of course, a love interest that Archer can't quite understand. Why such a beautiful girl from Boston's Beacon Hill would be interested in him, stymies him. Gale keeps you believing they will make the perfect marriage, or will they?   The Human Trial has something for everyone: medical science, academic scheming, blue-collared families vs. Boston Brauhmans, and an impossible secret discovery everyone wants a piece of. This is a book that will keep you pulling for the underdog until the final pages.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Audrey Gale Website: https://audreygaleauthor.com/ FB: @Audrey Gale Author IG: @audreygaleauthor   Purchase The Human Trial on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/3DquTdM Ebook: https://amzn.to/4hgoaRm   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Shelby Saville, author of the book And They Had a Great Fall. Shelby resides in a suburb west of Chicago.  Despite her city living, she's a small-town girl at heart. She grew up in a town of 2000 people where she spent her teenage years at her typewriter late into the night.  Her stories brought her to a world beyond the 1.6 square mile radius of her town.   Her first writing job was for the Lacon Home Journal, where she covered the news of the town. She particularly loved writing obituaries, taking great care to convey the life of someone's friend … sibling … lover…. But still the city was calling.   She moved to Chicago when she got her dream job in the advertising industry. Throughout her career she realized she had an interest in digital media.  She's spent the last 25 years at Publicis Media where she's focused on media investment – quite simply – how advertising space is bought and sold. Most surprisingly, she found her career in numbers, not words.   She's returned to the world of words with her debut novel, And They Had A Great Fall.  It's a second chance love story, set in a foreign city with a dash of a celebrity secret romance.  Writing this novel has felt like coming home as the two sides of her brain merge.   When not at her computer, she can be found hanging with her husband, Scott, teenage daughter, three dogs and one mean cat.   In my book review, I stated And They Had a Great Fall is a wonderful romance that had me in all of my emotions. For me, it was particularly poignant since we learn early on that Kat lost her husband to cancer five years earlier - and she is having a heck of a time moving forward. Although she is much younger than me, has a young child at home, and was in the midst of an important corporate career, I still felt a kinship.   Kat's love interest, Jake, is someone well outside her norm. Everything about his life is what she claims to abhor - messy, emotional, spontaneous, and all-in. Jake sees that she offers a stability and sense of purpose he craves. But what happens when two broken people find one another and try to fix the other without first fixing themselves?   I laughed. I cried. I raged. I cheered. But most importantly, I connected. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is DH Morris, author of the book The Girl of Many Crowns. D.H. Morris is a native of San Diego, California. She has lived on four continents and traveled through many countries. She has four children, eleven grandchildren, and 1 fur baby. She currently lives in Kansas City, Missouri. D.H. Morris graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre and Choral Music education and pursued graduate work in English at USU and law at the University of Utah. She is also a published playwright.   As a descendant of Judith and Baldwin, the author discovered their intriguing story while doing a genealogical project. This journey inspired her to research everything about the 9th Century – including food, politics, travel, war, education, clothing, jewelry, religion, holidays, marriage customs, and medicine. She loves this remarkable time in history when the European countries we know today were being formed and fighting for their very existence. She is currently working on a prequel to The Girl of Many Crowns.   In my book review, I stated The Girl of Many Crowns an amazing historical fiction based on the French princess Judith and Baldwin Iron Arm. This novel is set in the 800s in France, which is not typically a time period I enjoy. However, I loved this book because DH brought these characters to life and didn't get me mired in the nitty gritty of ancient French political history. Don't get me wrong, I learned a lot about the political intrigues of the time, but always as a way of seeing Judith and her plight.   During women's history month, I was happy to read this book and see that even seventeen hundred years ago, women understood that they were being used as pawns and found a way to rebel against their oppressors. Judith, though young, was strong, courageous, independent, and brave. I believe this story should become an animated film that we can show to our daughters and granddaughters to show them what strength in the face of adversity looks like.   I raged, cheered, laughed, and cried - it's a must-read.   Here is a wonderful trailer that's a must-see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXw5RSy5WAg   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author DH Morris Website: https://newclassicspublishing.com/ IG: @dhmorris00 X: @DHMorris00 TikTok: @deborahmorris617   Purchase The Girl of Many Crowns on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/43wE9HN Ebook: https://amzn.to/4iAs6NT   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is MT Bass, author of the book Racing the Dream. M.T. Bass is a scribbler of fiction who holds fast to the notion that while victors may get to write history, novelists get to write/right reality. He lives, writes, flies, and makes music in Mudcat Falls, USA.   Born in Athens, Ohio, M.T. Bass grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, majoring in English and Philosophy, then worked in the private sector (where they expect "results") mainly in the Aerospace & Defense manufacturing market. During those years, Bass continued to write fiction. He is the author of twelve novels, two novellas, and a collection of verse. His writing spans various genres, including Mystery, Adventure, Romance, Black Comedy, and TechnoThrillers.   A Commercial Pilot and Certified Flight Instructor, airplanes and pilots are featured in many of his stories. Bass currently lives on the shores of Lake Erie near Lorain, Ohio.   In my book review, I stated Racing the Dream is another book that spans genres. It's a mix of historical fiction, romance, and suspense - and if you are like me, you are going to enjoy it!   Hawk is a WWII fighter pilot turned air racer who starts on a simple course near his airport and ends up racing in the first National Air Racing Championship. His engineer, Father Bob, has been with Hawk since a mishap in the Congo, along with his mechanic, Sparks. The three of them work to get as much speed as they can out of Hawk's racer.   But let's talk about the romance and the suspense. Hawk meets Allison, an official wing-walker and surfer girl. Blonde, beautiful, and daring, she sweeps Hawk off his feet, and he'll do anything for her - including becoming a pilot for the show.   As to the suspense, that comes in the form of Hawk's nemesis - another pilot who wants to win. However, this pilot is willing to win at any cost. Could the cost be Hawk's plane? Or worse, his life?   I learned a lot about air racing, wing walking, and flying low, fast, and turning left. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Michael Castleman, author of the book The Untold Story of Books. San Francisco freelance journalist Michael Castleman grew up in a suburb of New York City, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Michigan, and earned a Masters of Journalism from UC Berkeley.   During a 50-year career, he has written 3,000 magazine and web articles and 19 books. Fourteen of his books deal with health and sexuality. Two were named Health Books of the Year by the American Library Association. One was nominated for Sex Book of the Year by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. Four of Castleman's books are mystery novels set in San Francisco that draw on the city's rich history. And one is his latest, The Untold Story of Books, which Library Journal called “concise, engrossing, and immensely readable.” After just eight weeks in print, it went into a second printing.   In my book review, I stated The Untold Story of Books is a look at publisher from the days before the Gutenberg press to present. And if you are afraid that this is going to be dry material, then you are mistaken! He does an amazing job of keeping readers glued to the pages.   He also debunks the myth that the "good ol' days" of publishing were good. In fact, he shows that publishing has always been difficult, has always dealt with piracy, and has always made it difficult for authors to make money writing.   I was most interested in publishing as it is today simply because I'm an author today. I love how he showed that having a book published is no longer the difficulty. Instead, because the gatekeepers to publishing have been removed, the struggle is now getting heard over all the noise. Anyone interested in books, publishing, writing, or history is sure to love this book.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290 You can follow Author Michael Castleman Website: www.mcastleman.com FB: @Michael Castleman LinkedIn: @Michael Castleman   Purchase The Untold Story of Books on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/3QlsHqL Ebook: https://amzn.to/42ZS0X4   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #michaelcastleman #theuntoldstoryofbooks #nonfiction #writerscraft #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Larry Bograd, author of the book Blood Flow. Larry s an award-winning, widely translated author whose works have been published by Farrar/Straus, Harper and Macmillan. In addition to a UK edition, his books were translated into Japanese, French, Swedish, Danish and German. His first book, Felix in the Attic, won the Bank Street College Irma Simonton Black “Best Book for Children” award, and his novel Los Alamos Light was selected as a UNESCO Book for Peace. He has an extensive backlist and several anthologized short stories.   His success as a children's book and young adult author was cut short by censorship and book banning because he wrote honestly about childhood poverty and adolescent sexuality. When it became clear that no publisher would promote his work, he turned to playwriting, screenwriting and documentary filmmaking. He lives in Denver, Colorado.   In my book review, I stated Blood Flow is a look at a son's journey to understand his father's suicide. This memoir is real and sometimes raw, but it always brings us back to the understanding that Larry's father had a mental illness. His death when Larry was just 13 was unexpected for Larry but not for those around his father who understood the truth.   Larry spends years writing and rewriting the story as he uncovers facts gleaned from relatives, old friends, and even trips to his father's homeland. We also see some of Larry's own struggles as he deals with heart issues in his mid-40s that threaten to derail the life he has created despite his early trauma.   I enjoyed this memoir because it solidified what I've come to understand about people - we simply don't know what is going on with them by looking on the outside. We need to do a better job to get to know and understand those around us. And this can be as easy as sitting down and asking questions.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Larry Bograd: Website: https://www.larrybograd.com/ FB: @larry.bograd IG@ @larrybograd LinkedIn: @Larry Bograd   Purchase Blood Flow on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/42lpKx4 Ebook: https://amzn.to/3QUJUI4   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #larrybograd #bloodflow #memoir #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Pamela Kyel, author of the book Charm City Spouse's Club. Award-winning author Pamela Kyel was born and raised in Edgewood, Maryland—north of Charm City. It's kind of a running joke that when you live near a large, well-known city, you tell people that's where you're from. So, unofficially, she's from Baltimore!   She followed the drum of the Air Force for 25 years. She joined her husband on six assignments—OCONUS (Outside Continental United States), aka overseas, and CONUS (Continental United States). Along the way, they added two children and numerous pets, not counting the half-a-dozen cats that came with their house in Italy. She has traveled extensively across the states and Europe, with her favorite overseas locations being Paris and Slovenia, among stateside favorites such as Rocky Mountain National Park and Door County, Wisconsin.   Family is important to her, and nowhere is that more evident than in her Charm City Mystery Series. When you've lived across the world from mothers and brothers, you adapt and overcome. You create family—and they stay with you long after the career ends. Her military family resides in Virginia, Texas, and North and South Carolina—with many still on active duty worldwide.   Writing came out of their duty station in Illinois. She picked up her computer while sitting with her elementary-age child through covid classes and thought, I can write a book. And the rest is history. While her original novel will never see the light of day, she grew and expanded her confidence in what she was doing. She was good at this, and she would have something to show for it one day. In a little over three years, she'd trod the agent querying circuit and amended her goal. Now, she just needed to hold her book in her hand. It was necessary. With that in mind, she sent out three queries to small publishers, and for her, the third time was the charm. The Wild Rose Press picked up her book and offered a contract. Less than a year later, she now held all those years of hard work in her hand.    In my book review, I stated Charm City Spouses Club is the second installment of the Charm City Mystery series. If you loved Special Agent Laci Duvall, AFOSI in the first book, you won't be disappointed in the second! This time, Laci is at a friendly baseball game between the Air Force and Army's Special Investigative Teams. However, the friendly game turns deadly when the president of the military spouse's club turns up dead in the bathroom.   The list of potential murder suspects is long - from jealous women who wanted to be president to unhappy club officers who hated the president's cruel nature, to unhappy neighbors and everyone in between.   But Laci isn't just trying to solve a murder. She is figuring out how to work in tandem with another military agency all while fighting the new agent in her own office who wants to make a name for herself by taking over the investigation without Laci's direction or approval.   Once again, we see Laci's humor, charm, and insights into the world around her. This is a book you won't want to miss. Today on the Online for Authors podcast, guest-host Carole O'Neill chats with Erica D'Arcangelo, author of the book A Story About Pizza. Erica D'Arcangelo is a storyteller, author, and content creator with a passion for weaving narratives that reflect her Italian heritage and cultural roots. With degrees in Communications, Advertising, and Journalism, Erica launched her career in digital marketing, founding and leading three successful content creation companies—starting her entrepreneurial journey in 2013. In August 2024, Erica published her debut book, A Story About Pizza, a historical fiction novel that delves into the life of her grandfather, an Italian immigrant and coal miner with dreams of opening a pizzeria. This book is just the beginning of Erica's literary journey. On February 9th, she released the first book in a twelve-book children's series exploring Italian culture, family, food and the art of pizza-making, Pietro's Pizza. Raised in a traditional Catholic Italian family, Erica's stories often reflect her experiences growing up with a deep sense of family, culture, and food—values that are central to her writing and creative work.   In her book review, Carole stated  that Erica's story about the life of her grandfather, Pietro, reminds us of the struggles associated with the immigrant experience for many Italians who came to America. Her clever inserts of Italian recipes after each chapter not only confirmed its authenticity but frankly made my mouth water.   Her narrative made me feel the pressures Pietro felt and the courage he showed as he embarked on a journey that led to a goal he always hoped was possible. This book is a very easy and enjoyable read, especially for anyone who loves pizza.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Erica D'Arcangelo Website: https://www.astoryaboutpizza.com/ FB: @darcspizza FB: @astoryaboutpizza  IG: @astoryaboutpizza X: @edarcdesilva LinkedIn: @erica-d-arcangelo-desilva   Purchase A Story About Pizza on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/4he5UrN Ebook: https://amzn.to/41KQKpw   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #ericadarcangelo #astoryaboutpizza #memoir #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Mark Steven Porro, author of the book A Cup of Tea on the Commode. Mark Steven Porro, a New Jersey native (Exit 163), earned an Industrial Design degree from The Ohio State University. After years of agency work, his love of acting led him to Hollywood, where he appeared in dozens of television, film, and stage productions. Mark also spent his twenty-eight years in Tinseltown, entrepreneuring. He started five non-profit companies. But hold the applause, none were intended to be. He now lives in the South of France. But hold your pity. He of sound mind and body chose to suffer in the heart of wine country where the locals insist his French isn't so bad—at least that's what he thinks they're saying.   Mark is an award-winning designer, writer, director, and now a best-selling, award-winning author. He has written lots of jokes, several screenplays, and one award-winning short film. A Cup of Tea on the Commode—a sad, sweet, and funny debut memoir—chronicles his multitasking adventures of filling his mother's last years with love, laughter, and joy. Though not always successful, he came pretty damn close.   In my book review, I stated A Cup of Tea on the Commode is a memoir about his time as a caregiver for his ailing mother. Porro takes readers on a real-life journey complete with personal childhood memories, funny anecdotes, and poignant details about his time as a caregiver.   What I loved most is Porro's honesty. Being a caregiver is difficult. As a caregiver, he did his best but sometimes, his best and his family's best, led to not-so-great outcomes. Yet, overall, caring for his mom was something he wouldn't have wanted to miss because it gave him precious time with someone he loved dearly.   As a caregiver, I related completely. However, this book will touch more than caregivers. It will resonate with anyone who has a relationship with a parent - good or difficult - and provide the reader with new ways to look at aging.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Mark Steven Porro Website: https://acupofteaonthecommode.org FB: @teaonthe IG: @ a_cup_of_tea_on_the_commode X: @ teaonthe LinkedIn: @Mark Porro   Purchase A Cup of Tea on the Commode on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/4e3TwJt Ebook: https://amzn.to/3A5kEdm   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #markstevenporro #acupofteaonthecommode #memoir #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Now living with his family and introverted dog in the east midlands area of England, his other interests include music, current affairs, volunteering and keeping fit.   In my book review, I stated Shallow Stock is a suspense thriller that will keep you reading well into the wee hours of the morning! I loved the story and the intricate plotlines. As an author, I was also intrigued by how all the threads came together in the end.   The story has a Hatfield and McCoy vibe. Two families are at 'war' and have been for several generations. They each own a competing corporation and work tirelessly to out do one another. Wynter McGlynn is the CEO of one. Julian Dayton is the CEO of the other. Both currently have issues holding onto their positions of power and see the other as their biggest obstacle. The competition is fierce, but is it fair? And what happens when the finger pointing starts?   From black tie balls to crooked politicians to a city-wide triathlon to human trafficking to board meetings to interesting family dynamics, this book will lead you down a road you won't want to miss. Today on the Online for Authors podcast, guest-host Carole O'Neill is chatting with Carla Conti, author of the book Chained Birds.   Carla Conti is a former journalist and author of the award-winning true crime memoir CHAINED BIRDS, a prison abuse exposé about justice and survival in federal prison. It took her ten years to write as she balanced the safety of the story participants (including herself) in this tell-all thriller of prison gang hit orders and corrupt officials.   Carla lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, who tolerates her true crime habit. She supports prison and criminal justice reform and blogs about these interests and other passions at CarlaJeanConti.com.   In her book review, Carole stated reading Chained Birds was like reading two books in one. A documentary about the horrible conditions and deplorable happenings at maximum-security and experimental prisons in Pennsylvania, and a memoir about a former journalist who was asked to join a legal team of former friends. Carla Conti's insurmountable task was to document what was happening to a convict as he tried to weave his way through a difficult system of penal abuse in the hopes of a much shorter sentence after an orchestrated stabbing.   Two different federal prison gangs made no secret of their desire to rid themselves of the man on trial, continuously threading their way through a ten-year struggle to avoid justice. Fear was spread at every level, and it became obvious that not only was the prisoner, Kevin at risk of being killed, but everyone working on his behalf, including Carla when they heard she was planning to write a tell-all book.   She came very close to walking away from the entire project. But, in the end, with the security of a pen name to protect her real identity, the story is on these pages for all of us to see.   Time well spent on a shocking tell all.     Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Carla Conti Website: https://carlajeanconti.com IG: @carlajeanconti X: @carlajeanconti Threads: @carlajeanconti  FB: @carlajeanconti Pinterest: @carlajeanconti   Purchase Chained Birds on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/3D8jvmI Ebook: https://amzn.to/3D8jvmI   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #carlaconti #chainedbirds #truecrime #memoir #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Karen is an award-winning and Amazon Kindle best-selling author of five suspense novels–Reckonings (award-winning family saga/suspense), Tangled Lies (award-winning murder mystery), Getting It Right (recognized by Essence Magazine as a Best Read), True Grace, (award-winning historical fiction inspired by her grandmother, set in 1924 Harlem, NY), and Justice for Emerson, a dual timeline murder mystery.   Karen believes in generosity and giving back. She hosts a weekly video podcast What Are You Reading? What Are You Writing? supporting fellow authors. She is on the board of directors of Easterseals Florida helping the differently abled, is an Elder in her church, volunteers for several professional organizations supporting nonprofits and feeds the hungry and unhoused every week. Native New Yorkers living in Florida, Karen and her husband, Robert, have two grown children and three grandsons.   In my book review, I stated Justice for Emerson is a wonderful mystery with a side of romance and a dash of historical fiction - and I simply loved this book! Without a doubt, I am a sucker for books that cross genres. Plus, it had a dual timeline and more than one POV.   The main character, Aria, loves to serve. Her career puts her on the frontlines battling homelessness, addiction, and hunger. She's a go-getter, but she's not perfect. She has a chip on her shoulder - she hates her diminutive stature and worries if others see her as a capable leader - AND she's still grieving the loss of her husband - which means she's more than conflicted about the attention of two very different and very handsome men.   Things come to a head when she finds Emerson, a volunteer and Vietnam Vet who struggles with addiction, shot in the basement of her non-profit. To make matters worse, she sees the killer, and he threatens her and everyone she loves.   The descriptions of those living in their cars tore at my heart. The romance stirred my heart. And the twists and turns kept my heart racing. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Mark Sowersby, author of the book Forgiving the Nightmare. In 2019 Pastor Mark went through a time of great healing.  He began speaking about the nightmare of abuse and years of suffering he experienced in his childhood.  And how condemnation, shame, and guilt were replaced with forgiveness, joy, and life in abundance.     He now speaks about his story and his testimony of healing, forgiveness and freedom through his ministry, Forgiving The Nightmare.     In my book review, I stated Forgiving the Nightmare is more than an abuse memoir or Christian instruction - it's a story of grace, overcoming, and forgiveness. Mark doesn't sugarcoat the truth, whether that truth is about his childhood abuse or about his difficulty moving beyond that abuse. In fact, he is so honest that he will be the first to admit that forgiveness will be a lifelong journey.   What I loved most about this book is the hope. Each page leads the reader down a path to something better. No matter what trauma you've suffered - and haven't we all had some trauma in our life - there is light on the other side. For Mark, this comes by way Jesus Christ. And Mark shares ten trail markers to help those who are seeking to forgive the nightmares in their own lives.   Do you know what happens when you hold a nightmare to the light? It loses power. And that's exactly what Mark discovered. It's a beautiful book that will fill you with the desire to do better, be better, love better, and forgive fully.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Mark Sowersby https://forgivingthenightmare.com/ FB:@forgivingthenightmare IG: @forgiving_the_nightmare_/ X: @SowersbyMark LinkedIn: @Mark-Sowersby   Purchase Forgiving the Nightmare on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/41gr585 Ebook: https://amzn.to/41gr585   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #marksowersby #forgivingthenightmare #memoir #christianmemoir #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Chris Underwood, author of the book The Cold Winter. Chris started seriously writing back in 2012 when his concerns of a power grid failure began to creep into his mind. His concerns festered into a storyline that continued to bug him until he got it on paper. He's heard that good writing is like sharing a good secret. It took five years of honing his craft to get the first book out, but it was fun sharing this secret.   He has always loved to write, even as a kid in elementary school. He still has his first book about a three-headed snake, complete with a Crayola cover stapled together. Several short stories were written in high school and college, but no attempts to be published. College courses in creative writing were taken at Ohio State, but again, another path was chosen. A business degree in Computer Science and Accounting was selected as a more promising road to success. His other passion is sailing. He has worked on a sailing charter boat in Key West and taken some sailing classes to develop his skills. He has a sailboat in Ohio, and he spends more time aboard each season. A blue water sailboat in the Gulf of Mexico is his next goal, and it feels to be not far away. He pines for the day that writing and sailing consume his life, and hopefully he can take a few readers along in his stories!   In my book review, I stated The Cold Winter is a contemporary dystopian fiction (Book 1) about a power grid failure across the Northeastern United States. Despite reading it during the heat of a North Carolina August, I was always surprised at the temperature outside - the book had me so engrossed that I expected snowdrifts instead of sand dunes!   The story follows the Vesper family: Tom, his wife, and their two children as they navigate the failure of the Niagara Falls grid. We soon learn that Tom used to be a "prepper" but had to take a step back due to high anxiety and his wife's insistence. However, his knowledge about prepping becomes not only useful, but necessary for survival as he helps friends and strangers make it through the winter.   The book had a really unique twist at the end that I didn't see coming - Chris did a great job with that, but you'll have to read it to know more! Let's just say that I'm hooked enough to want to read the next two. Definitely put on your TBR!     Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Chris Underwood Website: https://authorchrisaunderwood.com/ FB: @authorchrisunderwood#   Purchase The Cold Winter on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/3Bm02h3 Ebook: https://amzn.to/4enqghQ   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #chrisunderwood #thecoldwinter #contemporaryfiction #dystopian #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jake Lynch, author of the book Broken to Beautiful. Jake Lynch is an author specializing in contemporary religious fiction and action-adventure novels. Having grown up under the teachings of Rick Warren, he has a strong devotion to God and actively seeks to love on others. While writing stories is entertaining, his main mission is to help spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to bring hope and healing into the world.   In my book review, I stated Broken to Beautiful by Jake Lynch is a YA contemporary Christian fiction that follows a loner high school student from the point of suicide to a place of love and beauty - all because of her walk with Christ.   Krystal struggles to fit in. In fact, she struggles to be seen at all. After years of loneliness, she decides that suicide is her best option. Thankfully, she does not succeed. Instead she meets a hospital janitor who helps her see that she may be more than she thought. As she comes to know God and allows Him into her life, she reaches out to others, helping them find answers to their own issues.   Krystal's character is very believable. As a once shy child, I remember those feelings of wanting to fit in but not quite knowing how. Jake did a great job showing readers her journey, and how, despite a religious transformation, the path forward wasn't all easy and paved with gold. Jake also introduced a host of other characters, allowing readers to find the one they related to most - changing oneself to meet other's expectations, not knowing who you really are, being angry at God for something bad happening in your life, moving to a new location and having no friends, finding yourself pregnant and now an outcast. Essentially, whatever the issue, accepting Christ is a great place to start.   On the flipside, I felt Broken to Beautiful was too long and would have had a better punch had it been shorter. I would have reduced the characters as well as reduced the long scripture references. Additionally, some of the description was repetitive. Despite these issues, I enjoyed the book.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Jake Lynch Website: www.authorjakelynch.com IG: @authorjakelynch FB: @AuthorJakeLynch TikTok: @authorjakelynch   Purchase Broken to Beautiful on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/4dwCeEy Ebook: https://amzn.to/4dwCeEy Audiobook: https://amzn.to/4eD2D4o   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #jakelynch #brokentobeautiful #YAficiton #christianfiction #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Scott Gordon's fiction has appeared in the Green Hills Literary Lantern (GHLL), Modern Times Magazine, Pennsylvania Literary Journal, The Satirist, and Mobius Magazine. In addition to writing fiction, he has written and directed films and television series, including A History of Black Achievement in America, Great American Authors, and more. Scott spent years working as a Youth Advocate for juvenile offenders with mental illness. Head Fake is inspired by the strength and courage of the kids he worked with. Originally from New Jersey, Scott lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Samantha, and their two rescue pups, Mel Brooks and Khaleesi Bee.    In her book review, Carole O'Neill stated:   As I began reading Head Fake, I wasn't sure it was something I would finish. After all, mentally ill teenagers centered around the game of basketball was everything I would avoid choosing when I decided to read a new author.   My surprise was the way Scott Gordon used humor on nearly every page to enhance Mikey's interaction against the antics of the high-risk offenders he was about to coach. The more difficult challenge was to make sure Mikey's own clinical depression didn't become the reason for a failed experiment.   By the second chapter, I had forgotten about the sport of basketball and raced through the pages to find out how each of these disturbed students would be saved. The violent offenders and outcasts battled with bipolar disorder and street violence to arrive each day to train with a coach they believed would get them a win.   Halfway through the book, I found myself cheering for the team and their impossible hurdles toward a goal no one thought could be reached. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Kay Smith-Blum, author of the book Tangles. After selling her European fashion specialty store in 2016, Kay Smith-Blum began writing the novel she had been percolating on for two decades. Three manuscripts later, Smith-Blum's debut novel, Tangles, depicts the human costs of the nuclear age and the dangerous legacy it leaves for future generations. “The Calf” is a companion piece, and the first in a series of short works and essays that accompanied the release in November 2024. Winner of the 2023 Black Fox Lit short story contest, Smith-Blum has been published in multiple literary journals.   In my book review, I stated Tangles is an amazing debut novel that pushes the genre boundaries. Is it historical fiction? A love story? A thriller/mystery/suspense? The answer is yes - and a whole lot more.   We meet Luke and learn that he is sure the nuclear power plant in his community poisoned the citizens, including his father. He also believes that those in charge, from plant officials to government leaders, knew of the safety issues and kept them a secret. Because of this, Luke sets off to prove these theories once and for all, making enemies along the way.   Luke is a likeable character, and Kay helps us get inside his head. Whether we see him as a young teen when he falls in love with his married neighbor or as an adult dealing with his own cancer diagnosis and befriending a fatherless child, it is easy to understand his motivations and cheer him on.   Will Luke be able to find the answers he seeks? Will he ever know what happened to his first love? My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Judy Lannon, author of the book The Making of Genevieve. Judy's award-winning contemporary women's fiction resonates with readers through its honest and relatable depiction of women and their life experiences. In her debut novel, Nine Days, we meet the Austin family and their narcissistic mother, Genevieve. Inspired by reader requests for more about the mother's character, Judy wrote “The Making of Genevieve.” A conversation with a friend inspired Judy to write “Nine Days,” which won awards soon after publication, launching her writing career. Within two years, The Making of Genevieve was published. Her books have been recognized by The American Writers Association for Best New Debut Fiction and Best Women's Fiction, The Firebird Book Awards, and The New York City Big Book Awards. Judy lives and writes at her home on Cape Cod, MA near the Atlantic Ocean. Though she thinks it's a cliché to say the ocean inspires her, she happily accepts that label because it's a constant presence in her writing. In my book review, I stated The Making of Genevieve is a fabulous women's fiction with a historical setting on the Cape. Genevieve grows up in an affluent area, and though very comfortable, aspires to be in the upper class. And, unlike her peers, she does not see a life that starts and ends with a husband and children. Instead, she wants to be a famous interior designer first - maybe a husband and maybe a family. Unfortunately for Genevieve, a secret she only shares with one other person changes everything. Her marriage to an up and coming young man turns sour after WWII PTSD causes him to turn to alcohol to cope, while her one true love chooses a calling that excludes her. Through it all, she pushes, pulls, streamrolls, and demands her way through issue after issue, always sure that the world is hers for the taking. The Making of Genevieve is a wonderful story of perseverance and resilience as a women tries to make it in a man's world. But just as importantly, it is a hard look at how secrets can lead us to make questionable choices and make life harder than it needs to be. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! He has been in continuous practice since 1987 and specializes in Japanese methods. In 2000, he was a founder member of Toyohari UK, the British branch of the Toyohari Association of Japan. In recent years, he developed the Ontake Method, which won awards from Harper's Bazaar Magazine in 2014 and Global Health Pharma in 2019 for the most innovative new healing method.   His books, Moxa in Motion and Hirata Zone Therapy received praise and recognition from acupuncture journals worldwide, including the Journal of Chinese Medicine, the European Journal of Oriental Medicine and North American Journal of Oriental Medicine.  He took on this project to republish his mother's memoir as a tribute to her and so younger generations of his family knew her story.   Oran lived and worked in Malaysia from 2005 till the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 when he moved to Taiwan. He now practices, writes, coaches and teaches from the southern port town of Kaohsiung, where he lives happily by a river, near a lake and close to the sea.   In her book book review, Carole stated: Reading Daughter of the Waves was a new experience for me. I had very little knowledge of Palestinian life before 1940. And, while I expected to read an autobiography, I found what I was experiencing was similar to sitting at the kitchen table with a neighbor over a cup of tea as she recalled memories of growing up in a seaside suburb of Haifa, called Bat Gelim, in pre-war Palestine. She didn't recite a chronological list, but rather highlights as she remembered them. It was obvious she had a love of adventure. From the Flying Camel to the cyclist from Palestine to London to raise money to build a Jewish sports stadium in Palestine, her humor was always part of the portrait of a child and a nation growing side-by-side. Her delight in the Palestine Orchestra conducted by Toscanini did not overshadow her memory of the Arab revolt to stop the Jewish immigration in 1936. And I will always remember her belief that no Arab woman is worth her bride price until she can cook eggplant in seven different ways. Her resolve to become a wizard with eggplants came from her mother. Each chapter could be a book. Read them over time or in one sitting. Three more novels followed before she began Landscape of a Marriage, a biographical work of fiction featuring landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, a distant cousin of her husband's, and his wife Mary. After penning a pair of contemporary novels featuring a disgraced attorney seeking a career comeback (Miranda Writes, Miranda Nights) she is back to writing historical fiction featuring an incredible woman with an amazing story.   In my book review, I stated Katharine's Remarkable Road Trip is a fun biographical historical fiction. We meet Miss Katharine Wormley - Kate - as she travels by motor vehicle in the fall of 1907. Travel by car, especially for a woman at 80, was rare at that time, but Kate is a rare individual.   Along her route, she meets many people who need what she has to offer from advice to encouragement to her medical knowledge. She also meets ups with old friends and family. Through it all, she reflects back on her amazing life.   Katharine Prescott Wormeley is a real woman born in England and moving to New England when she was just 18. She volunteered as a nurse on a medical ship during the Civil War, founded a school, ran a hospital, authored a book, and translated French novels. She, like her trip, and this book, was remarkable! My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Edward M Rahill, author of the book One Mile at a Time. Ed's fascination with endurance road racing was sparked as a young boy when he tuned in to the iconic 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. Born and bred in Western New York and an alumnus of the University of Notre Dame, Ed carved out a successful career in the energy sector. As CFO of ITC Holdings and later as the Founder, President, and CEO of GridLiance, a Blackstone Company sold in 2021, Rahill showcased his leadership and innovation. Yet, ever faithful to his philosophy of life, upon completing this book, he already has his sights set on his next exciting venture.   Ed holds a place in the annals of history as the cross-continental endurance road race record holder, boasting the fastest time in a competitive road race stretching from Boston to San Diego. His debut novel, One Mile at a Time, is more than a chronicle of this thrilling feat. It's a tribute to a promise made to his grandmother — that his children's generation would finally shatter the cycle of broken dreams. With its publication, Ed's commitment has beautifully come to life.   Currently residing in Atlanta, Georgia, Ed is a record holder, a successful businessman, and a proud father of four adult children. His story is one of grit, endurance, and the power of dreaming big — his story leaves readers captivated and inspired.   In my book review, I stated One Mile at a Time is a memoir about winning a cross-country road race - and a whole lot more.   Edward starts his memoir in a childhood surrounded by cars as well as lessons learned from his grandmother. Her long talks with Ed often resurface during life's difficult challenges. His hope is to have the chance to offer the same kind of advice to grandchildren of his own.   I was interested in this memoir because of my ride across the US on a tandem bike. Though not a speed race, there is something similar to the idea of making it across the country. My father also loved cars and speed, so maybe there is a touch of it in my own blood.   These races have been done on horse, car, bike, and foot - what's next? My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Robert Blake Whitehill, author of the book Deadrise. Robert was born into a Quaker family in Mardela Springs, just outside Salisbury on Maryland's Eastern Shore peninsula. He grew up sailing the Chesapeake Bay, and one of her most beautiful tributaries, the Chester River. After graduating from Westtown School, Whitehill stayed in Pennsylvania to earn his B.A. in creative writing at Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges. Later he trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City. He is the author of the award-winning, critically acclaimed, multi-category, international Kindle bestselling Ben Blackshaw thrillers, which currently has six titles, and audiobooks in the works in German and English. Whitehill lives in New Jersey with his wife and son. When he wasn't sailing, or knocking around the sky in a Cessna 152, Whitehill published several articles about his home waters in Chesapeake Bay Magazine. He is also the managing partner of Calaveras Media LLC, a feature film and television development company. He is a member of SAG-AFTRA, International Thriller Writers, GPA Aviation Club, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and served for a number of years as an EMT-B with the Montclair Ambulance Unit.   In my book review, I stated Deadrise, a thriller, is Book #1 in The Ben Blackshaw Series. If you love a Tom Clancy kind of novel, then you will love this series. We meet Ben underwater - clamming in the Chesapeake Bay near Smith Island. However, instead of finding clams, he finds a sunken boat, 19 boxes of gold bouillon, a dirty bomb, and his dead father - a man he hasn't seen in 15 years. His clamming partner, Knocker Ellis, isn't as surprised as he should be, nor are the other inhabitants of the island. When Maynard Chalk learns his deal has gone sour, and that Ben's father is to blame, he comes to the island to get his money and the bomb - but Ben has other plans. I loved Robert's characters, and especially loved that Smith Island with all her quirky inhabitants was as much of a characters as Ben. If you love a good thriller with all the twists and turns, and great characters, then you will want to read Deadrise.  Purchase Deadrise on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/48Z8iAr Kindle: https://amzn.to/48Z8iAr     Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Robert Blake Whitehill Website: www.robertblakewhitehill.com X: @rbwhitehill IG: @robertblakewhitehill FB: @Robert Blake Whitehill Bluesky: @rbwhitehill   Purchase Deadrise on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/48Z8iAr Ebook: https://amzn.to/48Z8iAr   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #robertblakewhitehill #deadrise #thriller #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Nkrumah Mensah , author of the book Anne of Survivor. Nkrumah Mensah: mother of two, lover of Star Trek and Shakespeare, anime enthusiast, and ballroom dancer adds another tagline to her name . . . novelist. Born into a long line of storytellers and with a desire to share her tales with the world, Nkrumah is the first in her family to bring her characters to the written page. In a mystical place called Greensboro, in the zany land of North Carolina, she works in commercial construction by day and toils on her writing passion at night. An English graduate from Mary Baldwin College, Anne of Survivor, begins her epic journey into the world of YA publishing.   In my book review, I stated Anne of Survivor is an amazing young adult historical romance - and despite my age (well past young adult), I couldn't put this book down!   Anne is a young, privileged girl who simply doesn't see life in the same way as her parents. When her father punishes her for her behavior toward a potential suitor, Anne leaves her home and ends up working as a crew member on a ship - but not before meeting a young prostitute that she sets on the straight and narrow. Anne has guts and gumption and soon discovers that she more strength than she knew. But what will she do when she realizes she has feelings for her captain?   And what of the captain who is not what he seems? And Anne's family who finds themselves entwined with Anne's young friend?   The story has many twists and turns and is the first in a series. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Kirsten Weiss, author of the book Legacy of the Witch. Kirsten writes page-turning paranormal and metaphysical mysteries, and now a Tarot guidebook that's a work of experimental fiction. Her heroes and heroines aren't perfect, but they're smart, they struggle, and they succeed. Kirsten writes in a house high on a hill in the Colorado woods and occasionally ventures out for wine and chocolate. Or for a visit to the local pie shop. Kirsten is best known for her Wits' End, Perfectly Proper Paranormal Museum, and Tea & Tarot cozy mystery books. So, if you like thoughtful, action-packed mysteries with complicated heroines, just turn the page… In my book review, I stated Legacy of the Witch is a cozy mystery with a dose of the paranormal - and I must say, I loved the combination. As a disclaimer, I don't usually read stories about witches and am not a fan of tarot cards, so I wasn't sure this would be a good fit. Nonetheless, the storyline is fast-paced and the characters are delightful. I'm hooked! April finds herself in Pennsylvania researching Pennsylvania Dutch crafts in hopes of obtaining a degree she believes she needs to move on with her life. But everything gets turned upside down when she finds a dying man - a man who happens to be her landlord - while jogging. It's when she starts seeing ghosts, meets a local witch, joins a mystery school, and learns of ancient hexes that the story really takes off - and leads April on a hunt to find the killer before she turns into the next victim. And if you are into tarot cards, Kirsten has provided a deck she calls UnTarot to help you with meaning making! It's a must-read for mystery fans.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Kirsten Weiss Website: https://KirstenWeiss.com Social media: Twitter: twitter.com/SBPM_Museum YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/KirstenWeiss-Writer Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kirstenweissauthor/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kirsten.weiss TikTok: www.tiktok.com/@kirstenweissauthor   Purchase Legacy of the Witch on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/3YKGTh1 Ebook: https://amzn.to/3Aj8rSg   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #kirstenweiss #legacyofthewitch #cozymystery #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

She will be chatting with us about creative recovery. Liz Mugavero has been writing stories since she could hold a pen. Before that, she would tell them to anyone who would listen (not many at the time). After deciding early on she would write books for a living, she practiced by writing bad, angst-filled poems, short stories and even a storyline for a soap opera--all by age 15. She never wavered from her goals despite all the usual questions including, “So are you going to be an English teacher with that degree in English?” or, “That writing thing sounds nice, but how are you REALLY going to make a living?” She went on to get a master's in writing and publishing and spent time in journalism, PR, and presently, corporate marketing and communications. And she's confident this writing thing IS the way to make a living. Aside from writing, she loves animals (has a houseful), the beach, reading other writers' masterpieces and Starbucks coffee. Originally from Massachusetts, she lives in Connecticut with her family, but has every intention of getting back to the Bay State sooner rather than later. Her mission is to craft captivating stories that ignite joy and engage readers with her signature easy-to-read style. Kay's impressive portfolio includes ten acclaimed novels, and her work has been featured in "iPain Magazine" and "Orange County News" multiple times. She holds degrees in Radio, TV, Film, and an MBA, combining her storytelling passion with a deep understanding of the entertainment industry. Her website, [KayAOliver.com], offers invaluable writing tips for aspiring authors and reflects her dedication to nurturing new talent. In my book review, I stated Road to Elysium is a wonderful contemporary fiction novel. We meet Ken in a darkened room and learn that he is a man filled with grief. Because of his loss, his life consists of working, eating, and sleeping - though he doesn't do the last two well. But a home invasion launched by two unruly teens from a nearby neighborhood changes everything. Although a work of fiction, I'm told that this novel is based loosely on a true story. Kay does a great job getting you to understand Ken - where he begins the journey and where he eventually ends. She allows us to see that progress isn't always linear, and that moving through grief takes time, patience, and understanding. Captured Moments: A Choice Between Dreams and Duty with Author Melissa Clark Bacon

Guest host Carole O'Neill's guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Melissa Clark Bacon, author of the book Through Her Lens. Melissa took her first photo with her grandfather's Kodak instamatic camera, complete with a bluecoat flashcube. By high school, she transitioned to 35mm black and white film and a PentaxK-1000. When the four corners of single silver gelatin prints she made constrained her storytelling, she moved to collections of images and finally to the written word. It took years to complete her novel (ten if you must know) and the process left her longing to make, so she began teaching herself photographic transfer and hand applied emulsion processes along with handwork like embroidery. This exploration of traditional photo making and women's work, combined with a female protagonist who invaded her waking and sleeping hours, shifted the focus of her work from children and the work of the hand to the undervalued and overlooked contributions of women.   In Carole's book review, she stated Through Her Lens is a historical fiction by Melissa Bacon Clark. Millicent Trayford spent her days as a member of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force assigned to Britain's Central Intelligence Unit's headquarters. As the newest member of Operation Crossbow, she worked reconnaissance in order to stop V1 flying bombs and V2 rockets before D-Day. But Millie's real desire was to use her camera in the middle of the action to tell the story of women's strength and vitality before their contributions in the war effort were lost to history.   Melissa Bacon Clark does a seamless job moving from fact to fiction as we imagine the horror of innocent families running for shelters as the sirens rang out against the backdrop of World War II. I thought I had my fill of WWII novels, but Through Her Lens is a very different look at a time in history worth reading, and the latest in the untold stories of the war's female heroes.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Melissa Clark Bacon: Website: https://www.melissaclarkbacon.com/ FB: @melissa.bacon.127 IG: @melissa_clark_bacon   Purchase Through Her Lens on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/3Zl9niI Ebook: https://amzn.to/3OprZI6   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #melissaclarkbacon #throughherlens #historicalfiction #wwiifiction #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Heart and Home: The Journey of a Polish Immigrant Mother with Author Karen Walczyk Prescott

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Karen Walczyk Prescott, author of the book Polish Mother. Karen was born and educated in central and upstate New York.  Inspiration for her second book, Polish Mother, came from three generations of devoted Polish mothers in her life.  Her great-grandmother, a quiet, unassuming woman who traveled through Ellis Island alone at the age of sixteen, lived across the street from the author when she was young.  Tirelessly dedicated to family and Polish immigrants, post WWII, the author's grandmother was a friend to all.  And finally, the author's mother, Eugenia, now age 92, who grew up in the Polish community of Syracuse, New York, and instilled the importance of Polish traditions and Catholicism. The first self-published novella Prescott wrote is Babbling Brook Society, a historical fantasy set in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Karen is married, the mother of three, and twice retired, once after twenty years at AT&T, and again after twelve years as a middle school English teacher.  She currently lives in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, where she plays golf, writes and is president of her neighborhood book club. In my book review, I stated Polish Mother is a creative non-fiction novel that is part family memoir and part historical fiction written about her grandmother (Mary Ann) and her great grandmother (Stella). We even get the chance to meet her great great grandmother Jozefa! The story takes place, first in Russia-occupied Poland, then on to Ellis Island, Connecticut, and finally New York. Stella arrives penniless after a perilous journey, meets up with her father who left the family a decade earlier to leave escape Poland and marry another woman, and eventually finds the man she will marry. However, even love doesn't solve all Stella's problems as she deals with the prohibition, family tragedy's, the depression, WWII, and her husband's betrayal. Despite all the losses, this is a book about hope and redemption. It is a book about love and what a mother will do to protect her family. It is a book about what it means to be a Polish Mother - one who honors God, family and country. And how, even after generations in America, Polish families pass on these traditions of prayer, food and patriotism. Excellent read! Geoffrey started writing fiction after a career in IT management at two major US TV broadcasting companies. He also wrote and produced an award-winning animated film, The Shadow of Doubt, directed by his wife, Cynthia Wells. The film showed in 27 film festivals and won 5 awards. In 2015, he published the award-winning children's book, Moonglow, written by Peggy Dickerson and illustrated by Cynthia Wells. He is the author of three novels forming the series titled, The Trilogy for Freedom. In A Fado for the River, an historical spy thriller (2011), he explores the quest for personal freedom, which grew out of Mozambique, a country that suffered for its liberation. In Atone for the Ivory Cloud, a cyber-thriller (2016), he writes about the ivory trade. In his eco-thriller, The Drowning Bay (2021), he looks at the responsibility of freedom and its demands on saving an ecosystem. His latest release is the middle grade novel, Never Less (Book One of the Pablo and Mindy Series). It is a thriller for young readers twelve and up that will help them deal with the opioid crisis in an adventurous, and relatable way, which will give them agency over even the toughest grown-up problems. In my book review, I stated A Fado for the River is the first of three in a historical thriller series. The history is Mozambique (East Africa) in the early 1970s as the country was on the verge of a civil war. I know absolutely nothing about this history. Geoffrey's descriptions of the events taking place prior to the Carnation Revolution were eye-opening and made me want to learn more. But more than a book about a historical period of which I knew nothing, Geoffrey penned a novel full of love and intrigue. Gida lives in Mozambique, though it is not her country of origin. Raf is a student visiting. They meet and fall in love. Then their world falls apart. Twenty years later, Raf, now a successful American TV executive, returns to the area only to be accused of Gida's murder. Will he be able to prove his innocence? What awaits him as he begins his search for the women he still loves? Most importantly, can he forgive himself for all that he did - and didn't do? I thoroughly enjoyed this novel! My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Doyle Glass, author of the book Swift Sword. Doyle is an author, historian, and sculptor dedicated to honoring those who fought for freedom. He is a master at recounting true stories of brave men and women who were outnumbered and out-gunned but continued to battle toe-to-toe with ferocious opponents in war. Doyle Glass was born in Midland, Texas among the fifth generation of a pioneer ranching family who was raised with an appreciation for hard work, adventure, and honor. After earning degrees in history and law from Southern Methodist University, he completed law school and worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Texas. Later, he served as Assistant Attorney General in Kentucky, prosecuting some of the worst violent crimes in the state. In 2000, Glass turned to the arts as a way to tell stories of his childhood heroes. He conceived and sculpted a bronze statue of John Squires, who braved enemy fire to save others during WWII and received the Medal of Honor. The statue stands in downtown Louisville, Kentucky as a reminder of the sacrifices made by local citizens who fought and died for freedom. In 2008, Glass designed and sculpted the Texas Medal of Honor Memorial, dedicated to George O'Brien who earned the Medal of Honor during the Korean War. The memorial stands at the International Artillery Museum in Saint Jo, Texas as a symbol recognizing those who earned America's highest award for combat valor. Besides writing and sculpting, Glass' greatest pride is being a loving husband and father to his wife and three children where they reside in Dallas, Texas. In my book review, I stated I recently finished reading Swift Sword, and it's a book that I believe should be on everyone's TBR. I grew up during the Vietnam era, which meant that my history classes didn't cover the war. I only knew what little I paid attention to on the news. Swift Sword helped me see more than American protests and swash-buckling MASH-style soldiers that often depict this tragic war. This amazing book focuses on the Swift Operation and the Marines of Mike 3/5. Doyle did thorough research, taking the reader on a detailed journey of those days of fighting. But more than that, he helps us understand the patriotism, the longing, the hope, and the fear of these young men as they faced impossible challenges. As I finished the last page, I wondered how I would have fared in such a fight, and considered the resilience that pulled these soldiers through. Perhaps, like the men in Swift Sword, we all have that kind of strength within us.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Doyle Glass Website: www.doyleglass.com FB: @doyleglassauthor IG: @doyle_glass_author   Purchase Swift Sword on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/4fqlMHL Ebook: https://amzn.to/4hTkfeV   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #doyleglass #swiftsword #militaryhistory #vietnam #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

She then received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2015 from South University.  Throughout her career, her experience has primarily been in the critical care setting including emergency room (ER) and Intensive care units (ICU). She travels in both areas with ICU as her main passion. Her husband has been a nurse since 2001 working mostly in the intensive care units. He also obtained his BSN from South University in 2017.  Their families, children, and grandchildren live in Ohio where Kim and her husband still maintain a home. They travel the country in their RV, living thirteen weeks at a time (the normal time frame for an assignment) as travel ICU nurses and have been doing so since 2017. They have traveled to and ridden their motorcycle in all fifty states, and they have worked nineteen different assignments at the time of this writing within thirteen different states.   In her spare time, Kim enjoys riding motorcycles, and she is an avid chronological scrapbooker. Not to mention, her most enjoyable passion is spending time with her beautiful three granddaughters.    In my book review, I stated Memoirs from the Frontlines is a memoir written about her experiences as an ICU nurse during COVID - and not just any ICU nurse, but one battling the pandemic in one of the hotspots in the United States - a small town in Southern Georgia. This memoir is a hard look at the pandemic from the eyes of someone who saw the worst of the worst.   Her story covers the first two years of the pandemic and takes readers to four different hospitals. She lets us see things that were not shown on the news, hear the truth about the ravages of COVID, and begin to understand the horrific experience of helplessly watching people die one organ at a time.   As I read, I noted several shared experiences from one way lines in the grocery store to modified holidays with my family. But I also noted experiences that were uniquely those on the frontlines. And I completely understand her desire to save the rest of us from that miserable disease.   If you wonder if the lockdown was necessary, if the masks made sense, if the vaccine was/is helpful, or if anything you did during 2020 and 2021 helped anyone, I urge you to read this account - and then count yourself blessed to be here to read Kim's words.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Kim Sloan on Facebook: @Kim Sloan, Author   Purchase Memoirs from the Frontlines on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/4fDxSgO Ebook: https://amzn.to/4fYGZZ9   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #kimsloan #memoirsfromthefrontlines #memoir #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Lorraine Norwood, author of the book The Solitary Sparrow. Lorraine is a former journalist and archaeologist who lives in Western North Carolina. Her short stories and essays have been published in Minerva Rising, New Southerner, Proud to Be: Writing by American Warriors, Volume 3, and Talking Writing, and have won awards in the Atlanta Writers Club contests. She is a member of the Historical Novel Society, Womens' Fiction Writers Association, and Author Accelerator. Her debut novel, The Solitary Sparrow, will be published in the spring of 2024. She is at work on the sequel, A Pelican in the Wilderness. The novels are part of a series set in 14th century England and France. Lorraine is also a certified Book Coach and developmental editor. She writes with an always-hungry yellow Lab, Sally, by her side and an aloof cat, Macavity, who sometimes deigns to be touched.   In my book review, I stated The Solitary Sparrow is an amazing historical fiction set in 14th century England and France. I loved the premise - a child, Meg, considered evil due to a birth deformity eventually finds her passion in medicine. But how will she move forward given her facial disfigurement, her family's station in life, and the fact that she is a woman?   Early in the book, Meg determines that she will become the first licensed female physician in English and hopes to provide care to women. She is tutored by a village healer, then a surgeon and his son, and even a school of medicine, though she must remain hidden from view because no females are allowed to attend. Despite it all, she thrives - gaining knowledge, wisdom, and even love.   If you love a story about persistence and courage, then you will love The Solitary Sparrow. Lorraine's research is top-notch and her characters come to life on the page. It's a must read.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Lorraine Norwood Website: https://www.lorrainenorwood.com/ Social media: FB: @Lorraine Norwood X: @LorraineNorwood IG: @lorrainenorwoodwrites   Purchase The Solitary Sparrow on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/3ObBQ4e Ebook: https://amzn.to/3CIKwMK   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #lorrainenorwood #thesolitarysparrow #historicalfiction #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Cynthia Reeves, author of the book The Last Whaler. Cynthia Reeves is the author of three books of fiction: the Arctic novel The Last Whaler; the novel in stories Falling Through the New World, winner of Gold Wake Press's Fiction Award; and the novella Badlands, winner of Miami University Press's Novella Prize. Her short stories, essays, and poetry have appeared widely. Most recently, her short story “The Last Glacier” was featured in If the Storm Clears, an anthology that concerns the sublime in the natural world. Her lifelong interest in the Arctic began in childhood reading tales of doomed Arctic explorers. But it was her participation in the 2017 Arctic Circle Summer Solstice Expedition, which sailed Svalbard's western shores, as well as three subsequent residencies in Longyearbyen and a trip around Iceland's Ring Road, that have inspired her writing since then. Cynthia earned an MFA from Warren Wilson College and taught creative writing at Bryn Mawr and Rosemont Colleges. Find out more at cynthiareeveswriter.com. In my book review, I stated The Last Whaler is a historical fiction that looks at the will to survive in the harshest circumstances. We follow Astrid through her journal entries, while we follow her husband, Tor, through his journal entries ten years later. The back and forth allows the reader to see Astrid struggles in real time as well as Tor's reflections - and all the things he missed. Astrid is strong-willed and vibrant. She is educated and dedicated. She wants - very much - to move on beyond a tragedy. A summer spent with her husband, a whaler, on a remote island, seems to be the ticket. She will revive her relationship. She will study the flora. She will find forgiveness for herself. Except, the Arctic has other ideas. This story, beautifully told, explores mental illness, religious faith, man's impact on the environment, and the solace of storytelling. You won't want to miss it. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jeff Giles, author of the book Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane. An experienced culture writer and editor who's been featured in a long list of publications including Paste Magazine, the Village Voice, American Songwriter, Ultimate Classic Rock, and Rotten Tomatoes, Jeff makes his debut as a novelist with Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane. Although it's his first novel, Langley Powell is Jeff's third book, following Llanview in the Afternoon: An Oral History of One Life to Live and Uncle John's Beer-Topia: A Heady Brew of Beer Miscellany. He can also be heard regularly as the co-host of the long-running Record Player podcast with Matt Wardlaw. When Jeff isn't working on his next project, he's probably either running off yesterday's calories or playing guitar (badly). Jeff lives in New Hampshire with his wife, two children, and a pair of dogs. In my book review, I stated Langley Powell and the Society for the Defense of the Mundane is a humorous fantasy - another combination I had never read but truly enjoyed. It was sort of Harry Potter "esque" with far more tongue-in-cheek references and great bits of history trivia thrown in. The story starts with Langley's death - he is crushed by a falling piano. Langley spent his entire life debunking the idea of ghosts, magic, and anything you couldn't see with your own eyes or prove with science. However, when he becomes a ghost, he realizes he's been wrong. Before he can wrap his mind around his error, he finds himself on a quest to save mankind by finding his childhood hero - the magician who failed and thrust Langley toward his lifelong obsession of proving magic doesn't exist. This dual timeline story moves quickly, has great characters, and lots of laughs. However, it also causes the reader to think about what is important in life and what holds the universe together. I highly recommend this book. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jack Maher, author of the book Poppy. Jack is a proud fifth generation Colorado native and grandson of Eric Douglas. Poppy is his first novel. A four-time National Television Arts & Sciences Heartland Chapter Emmy winner, he worked at KUSA-TV in Denver as a 9NEWS Multimedia Journalist and Executive Producer. In my book review, I stated Poppy: A Novel About A Colorful Colorado Life is a family memoir written about Poppy by his grandson, Jack. I love family history, and I love it when a child or grandchild feels that their progenitors are worthy of recall. Eric Douglas's life, known affectionately as Poppy, is incredible. Through him, we learn about Native Americans in and around Colorado, especially their art and the processes (clay, paint, beadwork, and more) passed on through the generations. We watch Poppy push Native American art to the forefront in Denver, but also in New York City, and San Francisco. We learn of his new ways to display art, his 'fashion shows' highlighting textile art, and his work to provide live demonstrations. Poppy lived an unusual life that often took him from his family. But still, his family meant everything to him. I loved learning about Poppy, and I think you will, too! Carole O'Neill's (Guest Host) guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Tina Hogan Grant, author of the book Secrets Told. A native of England, she feels very lucky to have spent her childhood and adolescent years in a small quaint Yorkshire town called Ilkley, where many days were spent roaming the Yorkshire moors, climbing the Cow & Calf Rocks, swimming in the River Wharfe and playing “Conkers” and “Jacks” with schoolmates. She is the youngest daughter of famed science-fiction author James P. Hogan who sadly passed away before her first book was published. She thanks her dad for sharing his passion for books and writing with her. Today she is living that passion with hopes of passing it on to her children and grandkids. In Carol's book review, I stated As I read the beginning chapters of Secrets Told by Tina Hogan Grant, I was certain her main character was a carbon copy of Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada. Patricia Levenick's complete focus on her job (this one as the head of her own law firm in Manhattan) reminded me of how everyone at the workplace feared upsetting their workaholic boss. Patricia even had two daughters, like Miranda. Ones she kept busy with ballet lessons, horseback riding lessons and any other activity that would not interfere with the needs of her law firm. I knew where this story was going. Then suddenly, the twist. Patricia's reaction to the letter she receives from a lawyer back in her hometown, changes everything. Initially, she was not going to let confronting her past change her lifestyle, or even slow it down long enough to admit she left a very different existence far from the hustle and bustle of New York City. With the insistence of her ex-husband, Bryce, that their daughters have a right to know who she really is, she agrees to take the family back long enough to satisfy his curiosity about what her childhood was really like. Their surprising knowledge of her life on the water and the discovery of a grandfather they never knew they had, brings the entire family to a new high. Alaska becomes its own character as they explore the amazing countryside and uncover the real Pattie. Grant reveals a memorable picture of the love of fishing in a nearly perfect world. You should spend the time to open these pages and enjoy this story. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is D Werkmeister, author of the book Volk. Born and raised in Nebraska, Darin Werkmeister now lives outside of Philadelphia PA, where he was an FBI street agent for 21 years. During that time, he investigated White Collar Crime, Organized Crime, Money Laundering, and Domestic Terrorism. While in Philadelphia, he was an eight-year member of the FBI SWAT team. Prior to the FBI he was a Marine Corps officer. VOLK is his first novel. In my book review, I stated Volk is an FBI thriller with a shapeshifter. I can honestly say that I wasn't sure what I would think about this novel and told Darin that I might not be his audience - werewolves are just not my thing. However, his characters are so strong and engaging, and the storyline so realistic (despite the werewolves), that I couldn't put it down. Terri Watson is the main FBI agent. She is working the case of her career when she sees the beast. But who can she tell? Imagine seeing a werewolf and trying to explain that to your boss. Instead, Terri takes matters into her own hands, and the result is ... let's just say a great twist to the normal FBI thriller story! I enjoyed that we see things from Terri's point of view as well as the wolf's. And Darin made it easy by making all of the wolf's thoughts in first person, present tense. It was rather spooky to be in the head of a werewolf, but this change in POV and tense really added to the story. If you love a good thriller/suspense, even if you don't normally go for shapeshifters, I think you'll love this book. I know I did!
