WBCQ/The Planet airdate - 5/24/25 Welcome to Fluxedo Junction! Each episode we bring you the best music of all genres from throughout the world, and this week we'll be featuring music from Lord Huron, Caamp, Bon Iver, Fontaines D.C., Goose, The Grip Weeds, Vicki Peterson & John Cowsill, Good Terms, Masters Of Reality, Unity Quartet, Carlton Brothers, Time Vision Collective, and New Riders of the Purple Sage.
It's a return trip down the Media Path for Vicki and John and this time Bob is along for fun, games and Cowsill family lore! We welcome back Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill, who recently joined us to talk about their collaboration on a new album of songs written by John's late brothers, Billy and Barry Cowsill, 'Long After the Fire', plus fellow founding Cowsills member, Bob Cowsill joins the conversation. We start at the dawn of Vicki's Cowsills journey, as a fan who became a friend who became a spouse. A seven-year-old, Vicki's big sister Debbi said, “You know, there's a girl your age in this band.” Vicki was instantly sold and she spent her allowance savings on the We Can Fly album. In 1977, when Vicki learned that a friend of a friend knew Bob's Cowsill, Vicki gave him a call to talk vocal harmonies. Vicki and Debbi were still bubbling under as The Bangs and they went to see The Cowsills perform at a local club. Just a few years later, Bob found himself invited to The Bangles Platinum party and John recounts his meet-cute with Vicki, right before his marriage to someone else!We test the Cowsill/Peterson crew on self-knowledge with a game we like to call 'Are You Better Informed Than Google?', Vicki and John share what took them two married decades to work together and Bob gives his perspective on John and Vicki's new album of Billy and Barry Cowsill covers.Bob and John share how their generational split affected their musical influences and experiences within the band and we hear about the earliest days of the Cowsills, their father Bud's early clash with brother Richard, performing at Brown frat parties as young kids and their first demo song recordings. And the games continue as everyone takes on some Cowsills Trivia Roulette from Becky Presley's Cowsills site!In recommendations--Fritz: Book, Miss May Does Not Exist by Carrie CourogenWeezy: Hulu Series, Devil in the FamilyPath Points of Interest:The CowsillsBecky Presley's Cowsills PageVicki Peterson and John CowsillVicki and John on InstagramVicki and John on FacebookJohn CowsillJohn Cowsill on FacebookJohn Cowsill on InstagramJohn Cowsill on WikiVicki Peterson on WikiThe BanglesVicki Peterson on FacebookBecky Presley TriviaMiss May Does Not Exist: The Live And Work Of Elaine May, Hollywood's Hidden Genius by Carrie CourogenDevil in the Family
Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill, who are married to each other, have been making music for many years but recently released their first album together, Long After the Fire. Peterson has been singer-songwriter-guitarist for the Bangles and Continental Drifters. John Cowsill began drumming for the Cowsills at a young age, more recently was the Beach Boys' drummer and now fills in as lead singer for the Smithereens. The new album features songs written by John's two late brothers, Bill and Barry Cowsill, and John and Vicki harmonize beautifully and, as you'll hear here, crack each other up. They recount how they decided (and occasionally tangled over) who would sing what and tell great stories too, covering Vicki's long connection with the Cowsills (which dates back to 1978) and John's cosmic if heartbreaking moment with Brian Wilson. Vicki Peterson & John Cowsill in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.vickipetersonandjohncowsill.com/ ‘Long After The Fire' sees Vicki Peterson of The Bangles (whose work includes worldwide smash hits such as ‘Eternal Flame' and ‘Walk Like An Egyptian') team up with John Cowsill, drummer/vocalist for The Beach Boys for over 23 years and an original member of the platinum-selling family band The Cowsills, Their debut album as a duo, ‘Long After The Fire' is a set of Americana songs written by John's late brothers, Barry and Bill Cowsill.A new single from the album entitled ‘Is Anybody Here' is out today (21st March), with Peterson revealing that “it is the song that kicked off the entire ‘Long After The Fire' record. John and Paul Allen recorded this track at Sun Studios in Memphis, without me, in the spur of the moment and absolutely set the template for the album. At this stage, John and I were considering calling the project Dead Brothers!”
Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill have been married since 2003. Vicki is a member of The Bangles, along with her sister Debbi. Two artists who have left an indelible mark on American music are, in actual fact, a married couple with a brand new album on the verge of dropping. The Bangles' Vicki Peterson and The Cowsills' John Cowsill join us! Differences between these two abound: New England vs. Southern California origins, 60s family pop vs. 80s girl-band rock, drums vs. guitar; but the parallels are even more striking....Both Vicki and John were raised by Top 40 Radio, they began performing very young and played in extraordinarily influential bands with their siblings. And so importantly, they share the honor of touching audiences with music that became lifetime soundtracks. Their new collaborative album, 'Long After the Fire' (including the about-to-drop-on-March 21st-single, 'Is Anybody Here') features covers of songs written by John's late brothers, Billy and Barry Cowsill. It was an uphill battle to acquire the rights to license the music, but thanks to Vicki's tenacity and their producer's rich industry knowledge, Vicki and John have leaned the expanse of their talent and exquisite harmonies into this very personal project.Vicki tells us about her rock stardom ride with the Bangles and John shares his early worries that having entered professional show biz at the age of seven, his career chose him and therefore the subsequent attention often felt embarrassing. We also talk about, 'Family Band: The Cowsills Story', a documentary that Weezy made about the Cowsills. We discuss John's time with the Beach Boys, Vicki's collaborations with her sister-in-law, Susan Cowsill and Vicki and John give each other the business with the well-earned nicknames, ‘Child Star' and ‘Rock Star'. Plus, we have a round of IMDB Roulette for the ages and an exclusive, in-studio performance!Path Points of InterestVicki Peterson and John CowsillVicki Peterson and John Cowsill on YoutubeA Thousand Times Video Vicki and John on InstagramVicki and John on FacebookJohn CowsillJohn Cowsill on FacebookJohn Cowsill on InstagramJohn Cowsill on WikiJoey's SongVicki Peterson on WikiThe BanglesVicki Peterson on FacebookNorman's Rare Guitars DocumentaryViet Nam: The Way That Changed America - Apple TV
fWotD Episode 2763: Susanna Hoffs Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 27 November 2024 is Susanna Hoffs.Susanna Lee Hoffs (born January 17, 1959) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and actress. She, Debbi Peterson, and Vicki Peterson founded the Bangles in 1981. Their debut album, All Over the Place, (1984) was acclaimed by critics but sold poorly. Their second album, Different Light, (1986) was also warmly received by critics and was certified double-platinum in 1987 and triple-platinum in 1994. It contained the US number two single "Manic Monday" written by Prince and the number one single "Walk Like an Egyptian". The group's third album, Everything (1988), included the US top ten charting "In Your Room" and number one "Eternal Flame", both written by Hoffs with Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. Hoffs was lead vocalist on five of the seven Columbia singles by the Bangles, which contributed to a public perception that she was a lead singer, even though all four members took lead vocals across their output. Following tensions including resentment at Hoffs's perceived leadership and the stress of touring, the band split in 1989. It reformed in 1999 and released the albums Doll Revolution (2003) and Sweetheart of the Sun (2011).Hoff's first solo album, When You're a Boy (1991), was followed by Susanna Hoffs (1996). Neither of the releases proved to be as popular as the Bangles' albums, although they yielded two charting singles in the US, the top 40 hit "My Side of the Bed", and "All I Want". She recorded several songs for films and formed the faux-British 1960s band Ming Tea with Mike Myers and Matthew Sweet. Hoffs teamed with Sweet to produce Under the Covers, a series of cover song albums. Her 2012 album Someday was followed by two more cover albums Bright Lights (2021) and The Deep End (2023).Hoffs's first novel, This Bird Has Flown, a romantic comedy about a struggling musician, was published by Little Brown in 2023. It received favorable reviews, and Universal Pictures purchased the rights to the novel for a screen adaptation. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:06 UTC on Wednesday, 27 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Susanna Hoffs on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Ruth.
Susan Cowsill was the kid sister of the family band the Cowsills, and she made an indelible impression singing “and spaghetti'd!” on the Cowsills' 1968 hit version of “Hair.” Jump to the 1990s, and she was singing and, for the first time, writing songs in the indie supergroup the Continental Drifters, which also included her friend Vicki Peterson of the Bangles and Peter Holsapple of the dB's. With the Drifters having a resurgence with a new book and compilations—and with Susan still performing with the Cowsills and on her own—she takes us on a lively tour of her long, colorful career. Did she want to join the family band at age 7? How close did the Cowsills get to starring on The Partridge Family? How is singing other people's songs "like having an amusement park in your body?" And can we expect new Continental Drifters music?
Vicki bangs out some manic Spinal Tap Moments like the time the Bangles had an uncomfortable listening party with Prince at two in the morning; when she brought a big old tape recorder to the group's first meeting with legendary manager Miles Copeland; and chatting with the late great Jeff Beck about Spinal Tap guitarist Nigel Tufnel's copycat hairdo. -------------------------------------------------- ***http://distrokid.com/vip/tmep*** Get your original songs into Spotify, Apple, Amazon, Tidal, TikTok, YouTube, and more with DISTROKID. Man, the Bangles had a ton of hits in the 80s. It came to an end by the end of the decade, but what a legacy. From there, guitarist and founding member Vicki Peterson took a break from the spotlight and got involved with a sort of mini supergroup called the Continental Drifters. Originally, the Drifters were made up of LA musicians looking for something to do, but their live shows were hot and their network eventually grew to about 10 members and included people like Vicki, Susan Cowsill, and Peter Holsapple among others. A fantastic book about them called White Noise & Lightning was recently published and an all-star tribute album was released last week. Vicki discusses her attachment to the Drifters and her mental state during that period as well as her history with the Bangles, their current status, and the stories behind many songs and videos. She's a legend! Enjoy! https://cooldogsound.square.site https://continentaldrifters.com http://www.thebangles.com https://www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
In the '90s, a group of legendary rock and pop artists banded together, blending inspirations, genres, influences and styles to form a uniquely collaborative sound. The Bangles, The Cowsills, REM, The dBs, and Hootie And The Blowfish were all represented in The Continental Drifters. Author and musician Sean Kelly has written the definitive Drifters tomb, White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story and he joins us this week, along with iconic Drifter Peter Holsapple, to take us on a journey from Hollywood to New Orleans, in the late 90s, through the rich layers of alternative, folk, California pop and Americana that shaped the remarkable story of this legacy mega-group.We kick off the show with comedian and Emmy winning comedy writer Brian Kiley, who shares his experiences in the writing trenches with Conan O'Brien and Ellen DeGeneres. Brian joins us fresh from his experiences performing overseas for the U.S. military and recording his Dry Bar Comedy special. Brian will be opening soon for Fritz at The El Portal Theater in North Hollywood!Sean and Peter then offer a Continental Drifters deep dive into their origin story, their musical heritages and their founding members, including New Orleans legend, Carlo Nuccio who inspired the band's move from a weekly residency at Raji's in Hollywood to one at Howlin' Wolf in New Orleans. The Drifters quickly ascended from a supergroup to a force of nature.Peter talks about his time with R.E.M. and Hootie and the Blowfish, Sean and Peter give us an in depth look at the band's inner wiring and how their on-stage chemistry met with conflicting ingredients in the studio. The beating heart of The Drifters was always the personal bonds and when the romantic energy within the group began to shift, just like within any family, the entire group was thrown off balance.Sean and Peter relay their frustration with their record label's confusion as to how to market The Drifters, what members were seeking in contrast to their previous industry experiences, what inspired Sean to write the book, why Vermillion is Peter's favorite Drifters album and details about the brand new tribute album featuring Drifters songs performed by 25 artists including Marshall Crenshaw, Debbi Peterson and John Cowsill!Plus, Weezy is recommending, the MSNBC doc, From Russia With Lev and Fritz is looking ahead with 'What's Next? Hello friends! Musician and author of White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story, Sean Kelley and Continental Drifter and Guitar player of The Bangles, Vicki Peterson are my guests for episode 1428. White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story follows ten disparate musicians from humble beginnings at a dive bar residency in Los Angeles through lineup changes, addiction, marriages, divorces, and industry letdowns. The Continental Drifters, composed of members of The Bangles, The Cowsills, The Dream Syndicate, The dB's, and more, found each because they'd been burned by the music industry and sought refuge in a freewheeling environment where they could experiment without constraint. When everything fell apart in New Orleans a decade later, they ended up with so much more. White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story Drops next Friday, Sept. 27 along with We're All Drifters: A Tribute To The Continental Drifters, a 2 CD tribute album featuring Marshall Crenshaw, Kim Richey, Rosie Flores and more. Go to continentaldriftersbook.com for book and album info. Go to continentaldrifters.com for music, photos, merch and more. We have a great conversation about the book, the journey of the Continental Drifters and more. I had a blast getting to know Vicki and Sean. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! WGN Radio's ‘The Dave Plier Show' presents ‘The Women of Rock' featuring conversations with music legends Joan Jett, Debbie Harry, Pat Benatar and Suzi Quatro. Included are bonus interviews with Melissa Etheridge, Vicki Peterson (The Bangles) and original MTV veejay Nina Blackwood.
Vicki Peterson wrote, sang and played lead guitar on many of the Bangles' best songs, even if they weren't the ones that made the band famous. In a smart, revealing conversation, the down-to-earth Peterson reflects on the Bangles' origins—and her desire to be in an all-female band, which soon would include her sister Debbi (a former Caropop guest) and singer/guitarist Susanna Hoffs—and the compromises and rising tensions that accompanied their success. In the aftermath of a painful Bangles breakup, Peterson—a band person through and through—joins the Continental Drifters, teams with Susan Cowsill in the Psycho Sisters and tours with the Go-Go's. The Bangles also reunite for two more albums. What lies in the future for the Bangles and Continental Drifters? What is Peterson's creative life like now? (Photo: Rebecca Wilson Studio.)

++++++++++Song-Tipps zur Folge++++++++++ Hero Takes A Fall Going Down To Liverpool Manic Monday (gerne auch die Version von Apollonia 6 anhören) Walking Down Your Street Walk Like An Egyptian If She Knew What She Wants (gern auch das Original von Jules Shear anhören) Following In Your Room Eternal Flame Be With You Watching The Sky

Formed in 1965, The Cowsills would become a worldwide phenomenon when “The Rain., The Park And Other Things” spent two weeks at #2 in 1967 (blocked from the top of the charts by The Monkees' “Daydream Believer”). The Top 10 “Indian Lake” followed in 1968, and “Hair” matched their two weeks at #2 benchmark in 1969. The family band became the inspiration for The Partridge Family, and even recorded the theme song for the hit TV show, "Love, American Style".In the early ‘90s, the family regrouped to record a Christmas single “Christmastime (Song for Marissa).” The melody for “Christmastime (Song for Marissa)”, was written in the late ‘70s and sat for years without lyrics as an instrumental. Once it was recognized as Christmas music the lyrics were added in 1986 and a brand new Christmas carol was born. Joined by friends and admirers including The Bangles' Vicki Peterson and Michael Steele, and Peter Holsapple of The dB's, “Christmastime (Song for Marissa)” was finally recorded in the summer of 1992. Along with “Some Good Years,” these two songs were actually released as a collector's 45 RPM single edition on Rockville Records in 1993.These tracks return three decades later on "A Christmas Offering From The Cowsills," joined by an all-new, acapella version of the holiday classic “Winter Wonderland.” These tracks illuminate why The Cowsills have remained in our collective ears all these years later.

The Bangles specialized in intricate harmonies and tough, taut, tuneful guitar songs yet broke through with relatively glossy versions of “Manic Monday,” “If She Knew What She Wants” and “Walk Like an Egyptian.” Drummer/singer Debbi Peterson recounts the female foursome's formation in L.A. with her sister, Vicki Peterson, and Susanna Hoffs, both of whom wrote, sang and played guitar. Debbi sang “Going Down to Liverpool” on the wonderful debut album, All Over the Place, but had a hard time with producer David Kahne. Label pressure increased on Different Light, with band members having to audition to sing the “Walk Like an Egyptian” verses. Why did the Bangles split after their third album and power-ballad smash “Eternal Flame”? Would they have been treated differently if they weren't women? Is the Bangles' tale triumphant or something more bittersweet?

SPECIAL - CALLING ALPHA CONTROL: ANGELA CARTWRIGHT & BILL MUMY EPISODE SYNOPSIS: We welcome two very special guests to Alpha Control: Angela Cartwright & Bill Mumy. Although well-known to LIS fans as the talented young actors who played Penny & Will Robinson on the classic series, BOTH performers have played numerous roles in dozens of movies & TV shows and between them racked up hundreds of appearances on both the Big & Small screen. But if that wasn't enough, these ‘gifted go-getters' are ALSO multi-talented artists in a wide variety of creative fields. Angela's life-long passion for art & photography, led her to pursue a second career as an artist, as well as a jewelry & clothing designer; eventually establishing her own art studio, which can be explored online at Angela Cartwright Studio.com. Bill on the other hand, has also achieved great success as a gifted musician, singer, song writer, voice artist & producer. In addition to his prolific catalog of solo songs & recordings, Bill is the co-founder of the off-beat rock duo Barnes & Barnes and veteran member of the band America. In his latest musical endeavor, he teamed up with musicians Vicki Peterson of the Bangles and John Cowsill of the Beach Boys, to write and record as the rock group, “ACTION SKULLS”; which has released two critically acclaimed albums; 2017's ‘Angel Hear' & 2020's ‘A Different World'. What's more, both actors are published authors. Angela's titles include her award-winning coffee table book Styling the Stars: Lost Treasures from the Twentieth Century Fox Archive, & her Art books titled: Mixed Emulsions, In This House & In This Garden among others. She also conceived and collaborated on The Sound of Music Family Scrapbook along with her fellow ‘Von Trapp' family siblings. Likewise, Bill's lasting fascination with comic books propelled him into a career creating & writing scores of them for both Marvel & DC. And in the early 1990's, he authored many issues of the celebrated "Lost in Space" comic book series for Innovation Comics. Later in 2005, he followed up with the acclaimed 360-page graphic novel, “Lost in Space: Voyage to the Bottom of the Soul”. With all that going on, it's hard to believe this ‘talented twosome' have also co-written three other terrific books: their first was their fantastic pictorial-memoir “Lost and Found in Space”, followed by “On Purpose”, a sci-fi adventure novel for young adults & finally their latest collaboration - the updated & expanded edition - “Lost and Found in Space 2”. As you can imagine, I've got a lot of questions for them both. So, get set to ‘Blast Off' for this fascinating conversation with LIS Stars - Angela Cartwright & Bill Mumy PODCAST INFO: This interview was conducted on 18 JAN 2022. Steve Cooper talks with musician Vicki Peterson. Vicki is best known for being one of the founders and lead guitarist for The Bangles. The Bangles formed in Los Angeles in 1981. They scored several mega hits as the decade continued including Walk Like an Egyptian, Manic Monday, Hazy Shade of Winter and Eternal Flame. After they broke up Vicki went on to play with the Continental Drifters and The Psycho Sisters and also played for the Go-Go's 1994-1995 tour. She currently plays with a new band Action Skulls that features her husband John Cowsill and Bill Mummy and she still tours and records with The Bangles.
The Bangles first received national attention with their debut album, All Over the Place in 1984, and the MTV hit, “Hero Takes a Fall.” The followup album, Different Light, would go triple platinum and spawn three massive hits with “Manic Monday,” “If She Knew What She Wants,” and “Walk Like An Egyptian.” The Bangles have just issued Ladies & Gentlemen…the Bangles on Omnivore Records featuring the band’s earliest recordings, back in print for the first time in years. We talk with founding member, guitarist Vicki Peterson about unearthing these lost gems, plus their garage rock roots, and the recent loss of Prince, who wrote their breakout hit, “Manic Monday.”
This week our guest is Vicki Peterson of the Bangles. Vicki joins us to talk about the new archival release, Ladies and Gentlemen...The Bangles!, which is being released by Omnivore Recordings on June 24. The 16 track collection pulls together a hefty stack of rarities from the '80s, including the band's first single, early demo recordings, live tracks and all of the songs from their self-titled debut EP, marking the first time that it has been available on physical media since its release on vinyl in 1982. As Peterson told us during the conversation, the group's archives were, as she put it with a laugh, "far-flung." "We had to dig up a lot of this stuff," she says. "Luckily, my brother, who is an audiophile and a recording engineer/masterer, he had a lot of the early versions, because he actually recorded some of the early demos with us. For instance, the 'Bitchen Summer' track, he was a teenager, I think, at the time. So he helped us track down a lot of stuff we had. Bill Inglot [also] helped, you know, we literally had to find the original masters of the EP." It was that EP that provided a good amount of the inspiration for putting this collection together. "It sort of sparked from a long-seeded desire to have the EP available again. In my heart, I just wanted it available in a physical form," she says. "We just wanted to sort of reintroduce it to the world, because we’re proud of it and it was really the birth of the Bangles in a lot of ways. It just kind of encapsulates some of the things that brought of us together initially musically and it has been recently something we’ve been playing. We’ve been dipping into this collection for our live shows in the last year or so, just because it’s so much fun to play. It expanded from there and we looked into what exists of our archives and found some other examples of ‘baby Bangles’ stuff.” We discuss those early beginnings during today's interview and Peterson also shares what she's got on tap musically, both with the Bangles and in her own work outside of the group and towards the end of our chat, there's a great story about how the Bangles' version of "Hazy Shade of Winter" came together with an interesting twist that might surprise you. The Bangles will be playing shows later this summer and as Peterson tells us, they've got some other things in the works as well that folks can look forward to. Fans can stay in tune via the band's official website and Facebook page to find out more details as things are announced. Rockers Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs have just released their third album together. "Under The Covers Vol.3" is their third album of covers that the duo put together from the songbooks of other artists that they both feel passionate about. Susanna returned to The Time Machine Radio Show last week to share the latest batch of songs. The gifted artist discussed the inspiration behind some of the songs off of the new album. She also discussed with The Time Machine's radio show host, Michael McCartney, the previous two albums from the duo known affectionately as Sid 'n' Susie (Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs), as well as her 2012 album "Someday", which became the most played album on the air for The Time Machine out of all of the records released in 2012. If you're not familiar with the album series that Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs have been recording and releasing, what you essentially need to know is that the first album covered sixties material (with the exception of the early seventies classic Bee Gees song "Run To Me"). The second album "Under The Covers Vol. 2" dove into the seventies and this latest album naturally dips into the eighties. Dips may not be the correct choice of wording. This new album plunges into the eighties and both Matthew and Susanna's song choices are so inspired that this collection of songs are a must have for your music collection. Susanna is a core artist of The Time Machine's radio format going back to the eighties with her fellow band mates Vicki Peterson, Debbi Peterson and Michael Steele of The Bangles. The band, along with The Traveling Wilburys, were the most played act on The Time Machine and helped define a sound for the radio broadcast that embraced a sixties musical sensibility with the modern music scene of the time. All four albums from The Bangles in the eighties solidified their status as radio core artists on The Time Machine and their return in 2003 with "Doll Revolution" was welcomed with open arms. The domination of that album's airplay was so strong that it became the most played album of the decade followed by Rachael Yamagata's debut album "Happenstance", "Not Ready To Make Nice" by The Dixie Chicks, Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising", Alice Peacock's self titled sophomore album, "Come Away With Me" by Norah Jones, John Mayer's "Room For Squares", "Mondo Magneto" by Brian Ray, "Lurch" from Mike Viola, "Brainwashed" by George Harrison, Nushu's "Nevermind Lullabye" and Rilo Kiley's "More Adventurous". Susanna found this old flyer to share for a June 13th, 1981 performance of The Colours, before the band became The Bangles, in the basement of the Echo Park Methodist Church Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast include The Bangles, Rachael Yamagata and Ronnie Spector.
