In episode 7 of Volume 4 Greg talks life, love, the universe, and all things music with singer-songwriter-producer PRODUCT!!!PRODUCT is an Australian musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. Right off the bat his debut single “TIRED OF THE BOYS” was featured on Spotify's “Taurus” playlist in June 2020 for Pride Month by resident Astrologer for Oprah Magazine, Chani Nicholas, and received praise worldwide as a result. Multiple collaborations and remixes with other artists followed, with several of them gaining placements by Apple Music on their official Glitch playlist. Collaborative projects with Burlington's tip/toe (including those under their duo name, lovenotes) gained PRODUCT a nod from PAPER Magazine for his production work with tip/toe on her “IPSHST” album. PRODUCT's 2021 remix of KUČKA's “No Good For Me” claimed the Runner Up prize in KUČKA and Metapop's official Remix This competition - awarding him some $20,000 worth of Native Instruments production software to continue creating with. In just 9 months PRODUCT managed to amass over 100,000 streams on Spotify alone, reaching over 50,000 listeners globally and gained a loyal following, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community. C., Sullivan, M. B. Abstract: Background: Microbes and their viruses are hidden engines driving Earth's ecosystems from the oceans and soils to humans and bioreactors. Though gene marker approaches can now be complemented by genome-resolved studies of inter- (macrodiversity) and intra- (microdiversity) population variation, analytical tools to do so remain scattered or under-developed. Results: Here we introduce MetaPop, an open-source bioinformatic pipeline that provides a single interface to analyze and visualize microbial and viral community metagenomes at both the macro- and micro-diversity levels. Macrodiversity estimates include population abundances and - and {beta}-diversity. Microdiversity calculations include identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms, novel codon-constrained linkage of SNPs, nucleotide diversity ({pi} and {theta}) and selective pressures (pN/pS and Tajima's D) within and fixation indices (FST) between populations. MetaPop will also identify genes with distinct codon usage. Following rigorous validation, we applied MetaPop to the gut viromes of autistic children that underwent fecal microbiota transfers and their neurotypical peers. The macrodiversity results confirmed our prior findings for viral populations (microbial shotgun metagenomes were not available), that diversity did not significantly differ between autistic and neurotypical children. However, by also quantifying microdiversity, MetaPop revealed lower average viral nucleotide diversity ({pi}) in autistic children. Analysis of the percentage of genomes detected under positive selection was also lower among autistic children, suggesting that higher viral {pi} in neurotypical children may be beneficial because it allows populations to better 'bet hedge' in changing environments. Further, comparisons of microdiversity pre- and post-FMT in the autistic children revealed that the delivery FMT method (oral versus rectal) may influence viral activity and engraftment of microdiverse viral populations, with children who received their FMT rectally having higher microdiversity post-FMT. Overall, these results show that analyses at the macro-level alone can miss important biological differences. Conclusions: These findings suggest that standardized population and genetic variation analyses will be invaluable for maximizing biological inference, and MetaPop provides a convenient tools package to explore the dual impact of macro- and micro-diversity across microbial communities. Fighting Off Hangovers With Gorgon City and Rudimental The Rave Curious podcast catches up with the British bands, plus former Beatport CEO Matt Adell talks breaking capitalism. When two of the hottest bands leading the UK electronic scene hit the road together, even a Monday night is alright for a party. Rave Curious spoke with Gorgon City and Rudimental, a pair of acts continuing the grand tradition of energetic electronica live bands—first exemplified by Roni Size and The Prodigy in the late '90s. We sat down in their Los Angeles hotel room for a quick chat in the midst of a seemly endless string of parties, travel and more parties. Thing start off sluggish as the guy shake off the cobwebs of another sleepless night, but soon our conversation kick into gear as coffee and beer come to save the day. Also on the podcast, former Beatport CEO Matt Adell talks about his new remix platform, Metapop, and takes a long hard look at the current state of the American electronic music industry. "Dance music is one of the things we've seen capitalism break in our lifetime," he says, referring to the bursting EDM bubble, of which Beatport and it's bankrupt corporate parent company SFX are the prime example. Matt doesn't pull punches when it comes to his former employer, but he clearly does know how to move on from it.
