Our focus in this series is on ‘decency and order' in the Church. I chose the divisive issue of ‘tongues' to start Volume IV of our series. The primary reason is because of this verse – “Let all things be done decently and in order (1 Corinthians 14:40). Another reason, as I explained in the last part of this series, is that ‘speaking in tongues' was one of the first challenges I faced as a new Christian. I was glad to have the opportunity to share my testimony of God's grace to me as a former atheist, but I was a bit surprised by the reception from some Christians. Among other things, they told me that I needed to speak in tongues as ‘proof' of my salvation. They said it was in the Bible, so I should believe it and do it.So, I began a study in the Bible about speaking in tongues.

Prince Andrew's settlement with Virginia Roberts Giuffre, announced in February 2022, marked a significant moment in the fallout from Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking scandal. Giuffre, who accused Andrew of sexually abusing her when she was a teenager, had filed a civil lawsuit in the United States. Despite years of public denials, including a disastrous BBC interview in which Andrew claimed to have no memory of meeting Giuffre, the prince agreed to an out-of-court settlement reportedly worth several million dollars. This agreement avoided a public trial, sparking widespread criticism that Andrew used his wealth and privilege to sidestep accountability. The settlement, though not an admission of guilt, reinforced perceptions that Andrew prioritized damage control over confronting the allegations directly.Critics argue that Andrew's decision to settle further tarnished his reputation and that of the British royal family. The settlement came with no public acknowledgment of wrongdoing, leaving lingering questions about the prince's involvement with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell's network. The financial payout also fueled resentment, with many pointing out that Andrew, stripped of his royal duties and titles, appeared desperate to preserve what remained of his public standing. By avoiding a trial, Andrew missed an opportunity to clear his name through transparent legal proceedings, deepening public skepticism. The entire affair underscores the broader issue of how the powerful often evade genuine accountability, leaving victims and the public dissatisfied with a system that appears skewed in favor of the elite.

For the fourth time in the history of the podcast, Team Vintage Sand returns to one of its most popular formats, the Hidden Gems episode. As we did previously in episodes 11, 30, and 40, Michael, John and I each choose one film to discuss that we feel has been unjustly neglected and overlooked by the huddled masses yearning to see anything besides a prequel, sequel, spinoff or reboot. So please enjoy Episode 53, which features three films that could not be more different from one another. Michael takes us back to the 70's and to a John Cassavetes film that was ignored and even despised upon its (very limited) initial release but has only gained in reputation and influence across the years. I focus on a very imperfect genre film, Neill Blomkamp's second feature, 2013's "Elysium" that, perhaps even more powerfully and viscerally than acknowledged masterworks like "The Social Network" and "Her", predicted a desperate future that we appear to be headed for much sooner than the filmmaker anticipated. Finally, John shines the spotlight on Alice Wu, a unique filmmaker and storyteller. Her second film, The Half of It, a lovely variation on the "Cyrano de Bergerac" formula, had the misfortune of being premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival…that never took place, because it was 2020. It ended up in the undifferentiated mass of content that is Netflix, from which John will hopefully save it. Enjoy, stay cool in the heat, see great movies, and Thank You for Listening, Citizen!

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, 1933–1945, Volume IV (Indiana UP, 2022) examines an under-researched segment of the larger Nazi incarceration system: camps and other detention facilities under the direct control of the German military, the Wehrmacht. These include prisoner of war (POW) camps (including camps for enlisted men, camps for officers, camps for naval personnel and airmen, and transit camps), civilian internment and labor camps, work camps for Tunisian Jews, brothels in which women were forced to have sex with soldiers, and prisons and penal camps for Wehrmacht personnel. Most of these sites have not been described in detail in the existing historical literature, and a substantial number of them have never been documented at all. The volume also includes an introduction to the German prisoner of war camp system and its evolution, introductions to each of the various types of camps operated by the Wehrmacht, and entries devoted to each individual camp, representing the most comprehensive documentation to date of the Wehrmacht camp system. Within the entries, the volume draws upon German military documents, eyewitness and survivor testimony, and postwar investigations to describe the experiences of prisoners of war and civilian prisoners held captive by the Wehrmacht. Of particular note is the detailed documentation of the Wehrmacht's crimes against Soviet prisoners of war, which have largely been neglected in the English-language literature up to this point, despite the fact that more than three million Soviet prisoners died in German captivity. The volume also provides substantial coverage of the diverse range of conditions encountered by other Allied prisoners of war, illustrating both the substantial privations faced by all prisoners of war and the stark contrast between the Germans' treatment of Soviet prisoners and those of other nationalities. The volume also details the significant involvement of the Wehrmacht in crimes against the civilian populations of occupied Europe and North Africa. As a result, this volume not only brings to light many detention sites whose existence has been little known, but also advances the decades-old process of dismantling the myth of the "clean Wehrmacht," according to which the German military had nothing to do with the Holocaust and the Nazi regime's other crimes. The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Episode 139 The United Nations is a religious organization, and the religion behind it is a cult. More specifically, it is a theosophical cult based on an "evolutionary" vision for mankind that it wants to control. This fact is revealed in a strange book by late UN big-wig and creator of the World Core Curriculum (Common Core in the United States), Robert Muller, from about 25 years ago titled 2000 Ideas for a Better World, which he published in four volumes in the lead-up to the year 2000 (links below). Muller delivered this book and a summary of the key spiritual points (https://search.archives.un.org/uploads/r/united-nations-archives/b/2/6/b2632c6e32bf3716fdcb137aae51c8af010e412704da3cfa0a34add2b900f764/S-1100-0033-14-00017.pdf) to the UN Secretary-General in March of 1999 in advance of the Millennium Assembly with the hope that it would guide UN global policy and global spirituality in the 21st century and third millennium. He then went on to publish five thousand more ideas. The book is shocking in its contents, and in this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay dives into a rather narrow sample of the troubling ideas contained in the summary document Muller stressed to the UN Secretary-General to set the agenda for our current century. Join him to find out what the UN really is. Rob is the Group Chief Executive Officer of bolttech, the fast-growing international insurtech, responsible for the company's development and growth around the world.  With more than 30 years' experience in the financial services industry, Rob has previously held senior leadership roles in insurance, including President and CEO of AIG's commercial insurance businesses worldwide and Chief Executive Officer of the Americas for AIG. Prior to that, Rob served as President and Chief Executive Officer of EMEA and was the Chief Financial Officer of AIG's global property and casualty business.  Before joining AIG, Rob was a partner at Deloitte & Touche L.L.P. where, for 18 years, he used his public accounting experience to serve global financial institution clients, including MetLife, The Prudential Insurance Company of America, and Merrill Lynch.  Rob is a C.P.A. He earned his M.B.A. from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Rider University in New Jersey and Chairman of the Rider University Board of Trustees. Highlights from the Show Rob started as an accountant, and then moved to AIG He left AIG with a lot of lessons of what to do and what not to do, and used that to start bolttech as a an insurance distribution solution for the industry They work on embedded insurance, but with a broad definition of the term Bolttech runs an insurance exchange, connecting buyers and sellers of protection and insurance, and current have a scaled solution that's doing 25 homeowners quotes a minute, every hour of every day (that's 36,000 per day for just one line of business) Their take on embedded allows for the flexibility to offer choice of carrier and product, but also thinks much more broadly about how insurance can support the transaction around the core product it provides protection around, rather than trying to be the center of the transaction itself bolttech intentionally does not think about insurance as the center of the transaction, which helps them to think about other moments and areas to connect into the needs of the consumer rather than a single buying moment Part of this comes from the understanding insurers don't need to do or solve for everything themselves, and finding ways to solve a customer's needs whether it's with something you built or not is better than trying to force your own solution when it's not fit for purpose Two things have been holding embedded back from living up to the hype yet Before that, bolttech recognizes that they're fast but their partners aren't always as fast, so they need to slow down while helping their partners to speed up so they can meet in the middle The first element slowing things is the idea of DIY – I don't need anyone else to be able to build an embedded solution It is possible, but it is slower than if you worked with someone else Second, many players are working on embedded solutions in pockets, which end up being disjointed and subscale rather than what would be possible if we could connect those points together so they can help each other grow When you try to build the entire embedded solution alone, you will move slower and less ideally than if you cooperated and connected to others working on the issue, too You really need to think in the really big picture of everything around the customer rather than any one product, or even just insurance Rob thinks about bolttech as building the rails that enable the trains of products customers need can be delivered, regardless of who builds or sells the products themselves This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance, Volume IV. And your ears were made not only to hear the words of men, the song of birds, and the music of falling rain, but they were also made to hear the Holy Stream of Sound. And your eyes were made not only to see the rising and setting of the sun, the ripple of sheaves of grain, and the words of the Holy Scrolls, but they were also made to see the Holy Stream of Light. One day your body will return to the Earthly Mother; even also your ears and your eyes. But the Holy Stream of Life, the Holy Stream of Sound, and the Holy Stream of Light, these were never born, and can never die. Enter the Holy Streams, even that Life, that Sound, and that Light which gave you birth; that you may reach the kingdom of the Heavenly Father and become one with him, even as the river empties into the far distant sea.” -Edmond Bordeaux Szekely, Essene Gospel of Peace, Volume IV

Excited by the first signs of change in an industry typically resistant to change, she followed her passions into technology and big data after working with Italian insurer Generali for 10 years. Theresa is responsible for some of the first academic research into the adoption of Big Data into the Southeast Asian insurance business. Prior to starting Accelerating Insurance, Theresa worked with a German management consultancy as Asian Insurance Lead. As a well-recognized expert in the field, her advisory practice now brings to bear a deep knowledge of the InsurTech landscape in Asia and a fundamental understanding of upcoming trends, innovations and new technologies with the experience and know-how for applying it to incumbents. She is also the Founder of the Asia InsurTech Podcast and InsurTech Amplified. Theresa wrote the new book, The Future of Insurance, Volume IV. Asia Rising, as the latest entry in the best-selling Future of Insurance series. Highlights from the Show Theresa comes from an insurance background, with parents who were agents, and her own career having started at Generali She spent some time in Asia for Generali, and then decided to move there in 2015 after being fascinated by the activity in the region, and the developments and possibilities in insurance there While there, she founded the Asia InsurTech Podcast, and recently started another with co-host Michael Waitz, called InsurTech Amplified. For more on her background, you can hear the first time she was on the show in Season 1, Episode 13 Theresa joined the show to share the news that she has written a new book in The Future of Insurance series, volume 4, which is all about startup activity in Asia, and it will be released on October 17th, 2023 (and is already available for pre-order on Kindle) Her aim was to tell the story of different types of startups in different countries and situations, including stories in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia and India The companies profiled through first-hand accounts, often written through interviewing the company founders, are: YAS OneDegree Tune Protect bolttech Qoala PhonePe Ping An Habitto One of the things that makes many markets in Asia so interesting for starting an insurance company is how low the penetration and knowledge of insurance is, which forces you to rethink how you enter and grow in the market Embedded insurance comes up very often in the book because of this, including in the case about Qoala, YAS and bolttech Japan is profiled through the case of Habitto, where the issue of an aging population, and a young generation that hasn't been focused on or served creates lessons that many other developed markets are or will soon be facing, like the US and Europe There are three major takeaway lessons that applied across all of the cases and have value to people in different situations, markets and companies: Build a customer-focused business Many insurers are product-centric, thinking about their offering and how to market and run it successfully, rethinking this to start from the customer and their needs leads you to then see how insurance might fit into that equation – or not – which then informs the options available to you to move ahead Embrace change Don't just be open to change, but when things don't go as planned or don't work out, rather than ignoring the failure or looking to blame someone, take learnings and lessons from the experience to do better next time or have more insight about what customers really want (or don't want) Leverage the power of partnerships Ecosystems is a buzzword going around a lot today, but carriers often see themselves at the center of the ecosystem with others buzzing around them, but that's not always the ideal way to do it You can't be good at everything, so you need the right partners to support your goals This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance Volume IV.
