Send us Fan MailFour headliners. A stack of vintage radio promos. One tight 30-minute ride through stand-up comedy and the comedy club culture that built it.We're mixing it up with what I call a cornucopia of comedy: short sets from Steve Smith, Robert Aguayo, David Crow, and Tom McTigue, broken up with real broadcast audio from the Laughs Unlimited archives. If you've ever wondered how a Sacramento comedy club filled seats in the 80s and 90s, the old commercials and promo spots are a time capsule of comedy marketing. You'll hear how we pitched the room, the policies, the showtimes, and the “come tonight” urgency that radio did so well.On the stand-up side, Steve Smith brings sharp observations with a clean and sober point of view, built from years of performing specialty shows for AA and NA audiences. We also drop in an early morning radio interview with prop comic Bruce Baum that perfectly captures the reality of promotion: headliners doing wake-up calls to move tickets, even when they'd rather be asleep. Then Robert Aguyo adds musical comedy texture, David Crow takes a wild angle on meddling laws, and Tom McTeague closes with storytelling and punchlines that keep escalating. If you love stand up comedy podcasts, comedy history, and behind-the-scenes club stories, hit play, then subscribe, share the episode, and leave a review so more fans can find the show. Welcome back to When Words Fail Music Speaks, the show where we combat depression and despair with the healing power of music. I'm your host, James Cox, and today's episode is a truly moving one.We sit down with Mike Gomoll, the visionary founder of Joey Song, a non‑profit born from tragedy and turned into a beacon of hope. After his son Joey was diagnosed with a rare, devastating form of epilepsy—Dravet syndrome—Mike and his family faced unimaginable loss. Rather than letting grief win, they channeled their love of music into a mission: raise awareness, fund research, and support families navigating epilepsy.Mike shares his journey from a college nightclub manager at Madison's legendary Headliners, through a long corporate stint at IBM, to becoming the driving force behind a series of benefit concerts that have raised over a million dollars. He explains how music became Joey's sole language, how “when words fail, music speaks” became the rallying cry for his cause, and why a night of rock legends—Butch Vig, Rick Nielsen, members of the Goo Goo Dolls, the Bangles, and more—volunteer their time to perform for a good cause. We'll hear stories of spontaneous on‑stage magic, the unique “super‑group” covers that turn classic hits into unforgettable tributes, and Mike's vision for expanding Joey Song beyond Madison. Along the way, we'll demystify epilepsy, bust common myths, and discover why a simple “D”—Joey's cue to dance—could be the world's most powerful message. If you've ever wondered how one family turned personal tragedy into a movement that harnesses the universal language of music, this episode is for you. Grab your headphones, get ready to feel inspired, and remember: when words fail, music speaks. Let's dive in.
The Headliners this week: Aston's New Coat: Aston Martin is ditching the green for Monaco. They're running a trippy, color-shifting "From Rock to Racetrack" livery. Leclerc Bags the Secured Bag: Charles locked in a massive Ferrari extension—rumored at €50M a year. He's officially chasing down Schumi's record for most Ferrari starts. The 2027 Engine Mess: The F1 Commission is stuck. The new engine ideas need bigger fuel tanks, but the current chassis can't fit them. The backup plan? Literally making some races shorter so cars need less fuel. Wild. Quick Hits & Garage Gossip Rule Tweaks: Teams get an extra winter testing day next year. Also, the FIA is clamping down on teams using old car tests to sneakily prep for upcoming tracks. Lowriders & Luxury EVs: Lewis Hamilton has been cruising SoCal in a custom '84 Buick Regal lowrider. Meanwhile, Ferrari dropped "Luce"—a 1,000+ hp electric hyper-GT designed by Jony Ive that costs a casual $640k. Tech & Rumors: Banning the rumored Mercedes engine trick, Honda's unexpected power gains, and what the heck is going on with ADUO? Plus, Williams targeting 2030 for a title comeback, and BYD trying to break into the paddock. Monaco Preview Let's honest—last year gave us exactly one overtake. We look at the stats to see if this weekend will actually be a race or just a very fast, very expensive parade Hit that subscribe button and tune in for the full, unfiltered breakdown! Entire days feel emptier than they should. That's not hypothetical; it's the reality Book More Women is working to change. This week, I spoke with Abbey Carbonneau, the founder and executive director of Book More Women, an organization that holds music festivals accountable and drives real progress toward gender-balanced lineups.Book More Women is in the final stretch of their crowdfunding campaign, raising funds to move from tracking the issues to actually building solutions through festival partnerships, data-driven research, and new initiatives that create real accountability across the industry. A large tree fell onto the airplane display outside Headliners Music Hall, destroying it. And we all felt that.
Group Therapy dealt with "Ashleigh" whose husband cheated on her early in their marriage. Does this mean he's not ready to be a husband? Lexi tried to dethrone the pop culture queen in Can't Beat Kelly, TBT is all over the place with some obscure (but awesome) requests, and we mourn the Headliner's plane!
This week's edition of Copeland's Corner, with featured Headliners . Brian is joined by comedians Greg Proops, Dan St. Paul, and Gini Sikes to discuss the current political landscape. The panel dives deep into the U.S. war with Iran — comparing it to Vietnam, debating four possible outcomes (withdrawal, ground invasion, nuclear escalation, or Trump's removal), and expressing concern over the lack of an exit strategy and the administration's shifting rationale. They discuss Russia's role in aiding Iran, the gutting of the FBI's counterterrorism divisions, and the real threat of domestic terrorism. The conversation shifts to the Epstein scandal and whether the war has successfully pushed it out of the headlines, propaganda's effect on both educated and uneducated voters, and the psychology behind single-issue and grievance-based voting. Greg Proops delivers a passionate argument about white responsibility in right-wing electoral trends and the danger of political apathy. The group also explores the Tig Notaro/Cheryl Hines friendship fallout over RFK Jr., the resurgence of measles due to anti-vaccine policies, Gen Z's nostalgia for the 1990s, the potential for left-wing radicalism, and the rising threat of antisemitism. The episode wraps with upcoming show plugs and a reminder to get vaccinated. -- Connect with our Guests... #GiniSikes - GiniSikesComedy.com and @GiniSikes on Instagram #GregProops - @ProopDog on Instagram #DanStPaul - DanStPaulComedy.com and @DanStPaul on Instagram #CopelandsCorner #Podcast #Politics #PoliticalComedy #IranWar #Trump #Epstein #Propaganda #Voting #Midterms #Antisemitism #RFKJr #Measles #Vaccines #FreeSpeech #Resistance #Democracy #BrianCopeland #CopelandsCorner #HeadlinersOnTheHeadlines#CopelandUnfiltered #ComedyCommentary #PodcastersOfYouTube #ComicsOnAir #TalkPodcast#PoliticalHumor #PoliticalPodcast #HotTalkTopicsPodcast Hosted by the Bay Area's own Brian Copeland, a longtime Actor, Comedian, Author, Playwright, Television and Radio Personality. This week, a sampling of local homegrown organic free-range Ozark original folk music from right here at the Ozark Folk Center State Park, recorded at our annual Homecoming Hootenanny. Each May, the Ozark Folk Center State Park hosts our annual Homecoming Hootenanny. It's an entire weekend of music and crafts featuring folks whom have performed at the center over its more than 52 years in operation. Ozark Folk Center State Park is dedicated to perpetuating the music, crafts and culture of the Ozarks. Open mid-April to mid-November, the park offers visitors an opportunity to watch artisans work, to stroll through the Heritage Herb Garden, and to hear live Southern mountain music. In the Ozark Folk Center Craft Village, more than 20 working artisans demonstrate, create and sell handmade items. Handcrafted items like flame-painted copper jewelry, leather purses and goods, baskets, brooms, stained glass, ironwork, pottery, knives, weavings, quilts, wood carvings, spun yarn, soap, candles, and more are made onsite. The performances featured on this episode were recorded at the Ozark Folk Center State Park's 2025 Homecoming Hootenanny. All of these folks are Ozark originals and local to the area. Some have performed at the Folk Center as far back as the 1970's. Hear why folks say there's something in the water in Mountain View, Arkansas that grows musicians. Four family bands, four national fiddle champions, two national clawhammer banjo champions and a national mountain dulcimer champion all local and all appearing on this one weekend at the Ozark Folk Center. Headliners this year include: Possum Juice; George Hulsey & Friends; Gary Rounds & Friends featuring Tim Crouch; Carolyn Carter; The Parker Unit; and Five South. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins explores the storied history of early gospel music publishing in the Ozark and Quachita Mountains. This episode focuses on legendary gospel music composer and publisher Eugene Monroe Bartlett and his Arkansas based Hartford Music Company. Featured is an Ozark Folk Center archival recording of Fredona Currie performing Bartlett's most famous hymn, “Victory in Jesus.”

What happens when a joke bombs in the boardroom? In this episode from the archives on humour, Andy Lopata brings in the headliners: two of the world's funniest keynote speakers, Jeremy Nicholas from the UK and Tim Gard from the US. This isn't just about telling jokes; it's a masterclass in the strategic use of humour to enhance leadership. Discover why the most successful leaders aren't afraid to be playful, how humour can defuse conflict and reduce stress, and why the most memorable lessons are wrapped in laughter. From their fascinating and unconventional journeys—from a BBC newsdesk and a US welfare office to the global stage—Jeremy and Tim reveal their secrets. Learn how to navigate today's sensitive culture without causing offence, what to do in the terrifying moment a joke falls flat, and why your sense of humour might be the most powerful tool in your leadership toolbox. Key Takeaways From This Episode What is the "punch up, never punch down" filter, and why is it the golden rule for using humour in today's corporate culture? Are the funniest leaders extroverts? The answer from a former BBC broadcaster and self-proclaimed introvert will surprise you. What should you do in the terrifying moment your joke falls completely flat in front of an important audience? Why did one of the world's top humourists turn down a career in stand-up comedy because of a very simple, physical aversion? 3 Actionable Insights Embrace Playfulness, Not Punchlines: You don't have to be a comedian to use humour. Start by being more playful. Go slightly "off-piste" in conversations and meetings. Use a light-hearted aside or a self-deprecating comment. This releases endorphins, makes you more memorable, and builds rapport without the pressure of telling a formal joke. Turn Stress into Material: The next time you're in a frustrating situation—a delayed flight, a tech mishap—reframe it in your mind as "material." As Jeremy Nicholas says, "It's much cheaper than having an analyst." This mental shift not only reduces your own stress but also gives you a relatable story to share that builds connection with your team. Create a Humour First-Aid Kit: Identify a few videos, skits, or memories that are guaranteed to make you laugh. When you're feeling stressed or overwhelmed, use them intentionally to break the negative pattern. As Tim Gard explains, using humour for yourself is a vital stress-reduction tool that renews your energy and perspective. This week's edition of Copeland's Corner, with featured Headliners . This week on Copeland's Corner, Brian Copeland is joined by Greg Behrendt, Jim Vallely, and Mike Larsen for a wide-ranging discussion on the biggest stories of the week. Government Shutdown & the "Federman Eight" — The panel debates whether the eight Democratic senators who voted to reopen the government made a tactical error. While some see it as a weak move that undercut the party's leverage on ACA subsidies, others argue Democrats are still winning the messaging war and the real political damage will fall on Republicans as healthcare premiums skyrocket — especially in red states where 80% of ACA users reside. Epstein Files & Mike Johnson — The group dives into newly released Epstein emails referencing Trump and Virginia Giuffre, the battle over releasing the full Epstein files, and Speaker Mike Johnson's delay in swearing in Arizona Rep. Alida Alva — the 218th vote needed to force a House floor vote on the files. Mike Larsen shares a personal connection to the Alva family and recalls historic floor speech moments from Nancy Pelosi and Jackie Speier. SNAP Work Requirements — Trump's new rule requiring SNAP recipients to work or volunteer 20 hours a week sparks a passionate discussion about poverty, the demonization of the poor, and the cruelty of restrictions on food stamp purchases (like banning hot food). The panel shares personal stories about growing up on food stamps and argues the real problem is stagnant minimum wages, not laziness. College Costs, AI & the American Dream — The conversation turns to skyrocketing tuition, crushing student debt, the disappearing promise of homeownership, and how AI is reshaping the job market. The panelists share stories about their own kids' careers and reflect on how the economic ladder has been pulled up from younger generations. Greg highlights a crisis of apathy among young men around dating and family life. The End of the Penny — Today marks the final minting of the U.S. penny (which costs 3.69 cents to make). The panel jokes about rounding, cash being "cringe" among Gen Z, and the failed effort to put Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill. Trump's Polling Denial — The Daily Beast reports White House aides are panicking because Trump refuses to believe polls showing widespread financial anxiety, dismissing them as a "con job" by Democrats and the media. Ireland's $90K Housing Offer & Leaving America — The panel discusses the growing trend of Americans emigrating, from Rosie O'Donnell to Eva Longoria, and Ireland's program offering up to $90,000 to restore vacant homes. They reflect on universal healthcare, public transit, and why America increasingly feels like "you're on your own." Senior Driving & Waymos — The episode wraps with a lighthearted debate about whether seniors should face mandatory driving retests and early experiences with Waymo self-driving cars. -- Connect with our Guests... #MikeLarsen - @WriteMikeLarsen on Instagram #GregBehrendt - @ItsGreggers on Instagram #JimVallely - Wiki Bio -- #GovernmentShutdown #ACA #HealthCare #EpsteinFiles #MikeJohnson #SNAP #FoodStamps #PovertyInAmerica #CollegeCosts #StudentDebt #AI #AmericanDream #GenZ #EndOfThePenny #Trump #Midterms #Ireland #Immigration #WayMo #SeniorDriving #HappyThanksgiving #BrianCopeland #CopelandsCorner #HeadlinersOnTheHeadlines#CopelandUnfiltered #ComedyCommentary #PodcastersOfYouTube #ComicsOnAir #TalkPodcast#PoliticalHumor #PoliticalPodcast #HotTalkTopicsPodcast Hosted by the Bay Area's own Brian Copeland, a longtime Actor, Comedian, Author, Playwright, Television and Radio Personality. Katie Couric pokes fun at Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle ad in a new PSA for colon cancer screenings. The clip opens to a close-up of Katie wearing a jean jacket, and quickly pans out to show she's wearing a hospital gown underneath, and she's on a gurney getting ready for a colonoscopy. She tells the camera, quote, "Speaking of genes. Did you know that the majority of people who develop colon cancer are not genetically predisposed to the disease? That's why doctors recommend everyone 45 and older get checked." Katie told "People" magazine, quote, "That ad showed how pop culture and a pair of jeans could really shape the cultural conversation, it was everywhere. It was a moment in time, and we thought, 'Why don't we ride that horse a little bit longer and have some fun with it?'" It'sbeen 25 years since Katie became the first person in history to broadcast a colonoscopy on national TV. She lost her husband to colon cancer in 1998. He was only 42. One of the most famous homes in American history is opening its doors to the public for the first time ever. The "Brady Bunch" house in North Hollywood will be accessible to fans on November 7th, 8th, and 9th. And while bookings are sold out, you can register to be on a waitlist, or be notified if additional dates become available. When the show was in production back in the day, the house was only used for EXTERIOR shots. The inside of the Brady home was created on a soundstage, and the inside of the actual house looked nothing like it. But HGTV bought the house in 2018, and renovated it so that it DOES match the house from the show. And of course, they recorded it for a series called "A Very Brady Renovation". Sacha Baron Cohen, 53, has been spotted on a dinner date with 27-year-old OnlyFans creator Hannah Palmer, just months after finalizing his $75 million divorce from Isla Fisher. Page SixThe pair were seen leaving the restaurant separately before getting into the same Cadillac Escalade. Action legend Chuck Norris, now 85, marked his birthday by hiking Lassen Peak in Northern California—a strenuous trail rising to 10,457 feet. The round-trip journey spans about 5 miles and climbs 2,000 feet, often taking 4 to 5 hours to complete. This one is a limited series, told in three parts, which will all be released on Thursday, October 2nd. It stars Amy Adams as Charlotte, Elijah Wood as Wilbur the pig, and Jean Smart as the narrator.
