Draw The Line Radio Show

This is my entry for this month's Beat Collective Challenge in which participants are given two or three samples and asked to incorporate them into an original track. This month's samples are all kitchen percussive sounds and are provided by Increment:- 3 x Glass, 1 x Plate, 2 x Pot I put all the samples into a Drum Rack and made a percussive rhythm with them which is played throughout the track and is particularly prominent in the breakdowns. I used the plate sound in Ableton's Simpler to make a reverbed single hit which plays at the little breaks where I put Auto Filter on the main channel. I used the Pot 2 sound to make a percussive loop, pitched it down 21 semitones and it plays in the first half of the track. Finally I used Pot 1 sound to make a rapid percussive pattern whic plays in the first main breakdown at 2:10 until 2:50.

This is my entry for the Beat Collective Challenge of 23rd March 2025 in which participants are given two or three samples with the challenge of including them in an original track. This month's samples provided by Gary Frank (aka Gairaigo) Beats - A collection of percussion sounds - starts with a showcase of each sound, then a few bars of them arranged in a pattern. Some of these sounds are cut from DSI Mopho samples. Hi hat sample based on a noise patch from ANA 2 VST synth. Kick is a couple of sounds layered together. Reverse Pad - started as a standard Pad in ANA 2, added some mid range saturation and distortion, Soundtoys Crystalliser “great doubler” effect, and Ableton Echo (ethereal canyon) for flavour. I used the Reverse Pad in the intro as part of the build up and in both breakdowns. I used the percussion sounds in the second breakdown to add tension, automating the EQ frequency and applying Saturation & Overdrive plus a little Reverb. I also put each percussion sound into a drum rack and then used them as ear candy throughout the track.

This is my entry for the Beat Collective Challenge for 16th Feb 2025 in which participants are given three samples and the challenge id to incrporate those samples into a new piece of music, any genre. This time the samples are from Senor Picante and comprise:- Sample 1 - Synth Pad Sample 2 - Glitchy Drums Sample 3 - Rolling Snares I incorporated all three samples in the two breakdowns and in addition I sliced the Rolling Snares to midi and made separate hits from them which I used as fills at various points un the track.e.g 1:20 & 2:50. I wanted to do a lot more with them and create fill patterns and extra percussion from the Glitchy Drums too but I haven't had time. I also used the Synth Pad as an added ambience sound which plays throughout the track. (edited)

This is my entry for the Beat Collective Challenge of 27-10-2024 in which participants are given two or three samples and are challenged to make an original track (any genre) utilising the samples. This month the samples were provided by Increment and are:- Sample 1 - Bass Thump (a one shot could be a nice kick or bass). Sample 2 - Delayed old creaky door - a little creepy but Halloween is upon us. Sample 3 - Vocal_nightcall_C - another unsettling sound is in in the key of C. For Sample 1, the Bass Thump, I put it in Ableton's Simpler, came up with a simple melody (F-F-F-A#) and played it throughout the track as part of the bass sound design. For Sample 2, the old creaky door, I chopped this and used it to create a creepy atmosphere for the trackin the main breakdown and from around 3:20. I also used the sample as is in the main brreakdown at 2:20, at 3:25 and in the second breakdown, at 3:50. For Sample 3, the vocal nightcall, I put this into Simpler and played a brief rhythmic phrase, which you can hear from 1:20 and then again from 2:25.

Rave Chant was released by Mavic Music on 27th August 2024 as part of a Various Artists EP entitled "Impressions Vol 3.' It's a driving techno track which was first created for the Beat Collective Challenge of April 2024, in which participants are given three samples and the challenge is to create an original track in any genre using the three samples in any way you wish. The samples for this Challenge were:- The Gregorian Chant which I used in the Intro and the breakdowns. The Plucked Melody which I used in the main breakdown. I separated out the voice from this sample, pitched it up and looped it through the main breakdown. The Rave Lead which is also in the main breakdown and immediately afterwards.

This is my entry into the Beat Collective Challenge for Aug 2024. In this challenge participants are given two or three samples and are invited to make an original track utilising the samples in any way they wish. This month it's a unique sample provided by Melbourne based composer/producer Foxquel Pope which contains the acapella vocal to an entire track "Not the Rain." I chopped the vocals up and then fitted them to my track to., I hope, tell a story.

This is my entry for the Beat Collective Challenge for July 2024. In the Challenge participants are given two samples and are asked to include them in a new, original track. The samples this month are provided by Gary Franks aka Garaigo and were created on his DSI Mopho synth, based on some standard patches with a bit of editing and some effects processing. S1 - BouncingDots - a crunchy rhythmic sound that could be used as a main beat. Has saturation, some reverb and Soundtoys Crystalliser effects. S2 - FeedbackSync - a really nice bass sound with some 1970's style oscillator sync warped in with a long envelope! I used the samples as follows:- S1 - I sliced to midi and used one of the slices as a percussive 1/8 note hit and I play throughout the track to glue everything together. I used the hats/rimshot/claps rhythm to create a kind of random percussion rack from the sample and played this in the main breakdown. S2 - I sampled part of it to create a synth stab at 30 secs and other places in the track. The main sample I used as a kind of riser to create tension before the first drop at 55 secs and at the end of the main breakdown. I a;so sliced it to midi and created a percussive roll which plays leading up to the first drop at one minute.

This is my entry for this month's Beat Collective Challenge in which participants are given two or three samples and have a month to incorporate them into an original track. The samples this month, provided by Ric Wickes, are:- Sample 1 - clear bell Sample 2 - humming stone Sample 3 - swiss train I used the bell without any processing in the intro. I also put the bell sound into Ableton's Simpler and played it in the first breakdown. The humming stone I also put into Ableton's Simpler and using lots of processing I created a percussive ride sound which is heard throughout the track. The Swiss Train I chopped up and played it as a high pitched squeal throughout the track. I also used Simpler again to create a kind of melodic drone sound which is also played throughout the track.

Naturally, I remixed it as a driving techno track and I thought what if the lover has a dark side? That's what I tried to bring out in my remix. If you do listen to it, let me know what you think. A vinyl DJ known for hard, high-energy mixes combining industrial, acid and old skool techno with a liberal sprinkling of trance, rave and hard house, she's inspired by the women and queer DJs who dominated Aberdeen's club scene in the 90s and early 2000s, Her first DJ gigs were at Aberdeen LGBT clubs Castro's and Fidel's. Recent gigs include dark, dirty house in Dundee for Dirty as Funk where she holds a DJ residency; Edinburgh for all-womxn collective Epika; and brutal techno in a grain silo in Fife for Bad Bhudda. Last summer she headlined Sabotage, an underground party that has quickly grown into Aberdeen's premier queer clubbing event. In June she's DJ-ing at queer cabaret night Glory and a multi-rig free party. This is my entry for the Beat Collective Challenge 26-05-2024 in which participants are given two samples and are asked to incorporate them into an original track. The samples this month are from a new AI tool called Co-producer, released at the end of 2023. https://coproducer.output.com/ It works like this - you enter a description and it gives you a bunch of royalty free samples to download. The AI gave me lots of samples; two were called a glass piano and prince guitar, but neither sounded quite like their titles. There are samples for this round, they are both supposed to be 91 BPM in the key of C minor. Sample 1 - Glass Piano Sample 2 - Prince guitar With Sample 1 I created a drone sound in Ableton's Simpler and then played it in the first half of the track. With Sample 2 I created a rhythm track by chopping the sample, and also dropped the sample into Ableton's Simpler to create a melody which follows the main melody. Both of these play pretty much throughout the track.

This is my entry for the Beat Collective Challenge 28-04-2024 in which participants are given two or three samples and invited to incorporate them into an original track. This month it's my turn to provide the samples, which are:- Sample 1 - Gregorian chant Sample 2 - Plucked melody Sample 3 - Rave lead 130pm I used them as follows:- The Gregorian Chant is in the Intro and the breakdowns. The Plucked Melody is in the main breakdown The Rave Lead is also in the main breakdown and immediately afterwards.
