We kicked off Episode 228 with our usual casual catch-up, briefly touching on Passenger, Hokum, and Undertone just to give you our quick initial thoughts before saving the deep dives for later. From there, Tom and Mark jumped straight into the main review of the week: the new horror-comedy Obsession (2026). We broke down everything from its bizarre tonal balance to whether it actually delivers on the scares, before pivoting into Backrooms (2026). We really got into the weeds exploring the viral internet lore, what makes liminal spaces so inherently unsettling, and why that specific brand of digital horror has captured everyone's imagination lately. You can follow us on X, Facebook and Instagram or if you would like to support us you can donate to our KoFi.
Greetings, and welcome back to Horror Business. We've got one heck of an episode in store for you guys as we're talking about 1984's Friday The 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter and 1986's Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives First off thank you to the fine folks over at Lehigh Valley Apparel Creations, the premiere screen-printing company of the Lehigh Valley. Chris Reject and his merry band of miscreants are ready to work with you to bring to life your vision of a t-shirt for your business, band, project, or whatever else it is you need represented by a shirt, sweater, pin, or coozy. Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. And as always thank you to our Patreon subscribers. Your support means the world to us and we are eternally thankful. If you would like to become a Patron, head to patreon.com/cinepunx. Thanks in advance! We briefly talk what we've doing involving horror recently. Liam discusses listening to the Dungeon Crawler Carl series of novels, and be we briefly talk about our favorite audiobooks that add something to the source material. We talk about the film Touch Me, and Liam talks about listening to The Stand on audiobook. Justin talks about the films The Whistle and Bodycam. We talk at length about the film Undertone. Up first is Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter. We open by talking about the appeal of Jason Vorhees as being based on the fear of the other in that until the sixth movie he is essentially a mentally challenged hermit living in the woods. We touch upon the upcoming series. Justin talk abouts the checkered history of Paramount's support of the franchise in that they were “becoming embarrassed” with their association with the series and intended to kill off Jason and have this be the end of the series but the financial response of the films inspired them to continue churning out sequels, and Justin ascertains that these movies are the epitome of the worst part of capitalism. We talk about the various problems with the horror community in general and toxic fandom as a whole. Justin talks about how not minding the first three F13 movies he doesn't really find the character of Jason Vorhees compelling at all. Justin talks about what he likes about the film: the filmmaker decided to make a child the protagonist in a film that was very clearly not at all made for kids, and not just a protagonist but a smart protagonist. Liam talks about his experience with these films in that part six was the first of the series he saw and how he weirdly misremembers them, including a moment in which a character is murdered in an over the top almost silly manner (the infamous “he's killing me!” scene) as well as the many, many extended chase scenes, and how the mystique of the character is ruined by shots of him running, and Justin adds that either a brisk walk or straight up just showing up is the only acceptable way slasher villains should move. We talk about Tommy Jarvis' method of fucking with Jason, and how it's at least innovative for a horror movie. Up next is Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. We start by talking about how this is the first film where Jason is overtly supernatural, and that Tommy did actually kill him but now he's resurrected and actually undead. Justin talks about how it's weirdly believable that Tommy would need to see the body before believing Jason was actually dead. He also talks about how unlike part 4 he finds this scene entirely irredeemable. Liam talks about how the movie doesn't hold up to his memory of it. Liam talks about how ridiculous it is that everyone has willingly forgets about Jason. He also talks about how there's a weird sense of humor in the film that isn't present in the prior films, especially in the infamous paintball scene, and how he didn't really remember that as a kid, although he says the “quippiness” was a bit much. We discuss how the ending of chaining Jason to the bottom of the lake sounds cool but there's no real logic to it. First off thank you to Christan for not only suggesting these films but also being a faithful patreon subscriber. It truly means the world to us when people see and hear what we do and decide to support us in any way possible. Directed by Ian Tuason, Undertone is the supernatural horror film starring Nina Kiri. The host of a popular paranormal podcast is sent hidden messages within anonymous recordings, unleashing a demonic presence that is impossible to escape. We break down all things paranormal podcasting, genuine scares, and an ending we can't confirm we fully understand.
We sluiten af met een volledig spoilerloze review van Ready or Not en Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.
Steve's Required Viewing pick is Undertone, a new horror movie that uses audio as the prime source of scares (and which has already become a huge indie hit). In addition to that discussion, John takes a look at the two-episode premiere of Widow's Bay, a comedy/horror hybrid that just debuted on Apple TV Plus. The show is rounded out with a few other recent watches and some off-the-cuff reactions to the trailer for Zach Cregger's upcoming Resident Evil reboot.

C.J. and guest Brandon Will slip on their headphones and listen at their own peril as they podcast about a movie about a podcast, UNDERTONE (2026). This audio-driven A24 horror movie centers around a young woman acting as the primary caregiver to her ailing mother, and Brandon brings his personal experiences as his mother's caregiver to the discussion. C.J. Arellano is an NYC-based writer/filmmaker who plays in the sandboxes of horror, comedy, and fantasy. His films have been featured at international fests including Tribeca, NewFest, Overlook, and Chicago International Film Festival, winning a handful of awards along the way. He is fueled by hope, spreadsheets, ube ice cream, his trusty asthma inhaler, and posting stupid bullshit on Instagram stories. Check out his work at CJarellano.com. Find him on IG: @cjlgvaBrandon Will is a writer and filmmaker. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing from The New School. For ten years he's been primary caregiver for his mother, Janice, who lives with Parkinson's. He's completing a memoir, WILL MEN CARE, about the struggle in his thirties to comprehend what that asked of and offered him. He's co-authoring a non-fiction book with Janice, and they've completed a screenplay—a rock and roll musical dance romance about the complexities of forming caregiving communities. They host Collective Will, an Open Mic centering disability/illness/aging/caregiving in Berwyn, IL and online. Their advocacy has appeared in books like Rainesford Stauffer's “All the Gold Stars” and Jennifer Levin's “Generation Care,” national media such as a Wall Street Journal profile, and as featured subjects of the ABC News Live Special "America's Care Crises," recently nominated for an Emmy. A24 has another horror genre winner on their hands, Undertone. Writer-director Ian Tuason whipped up one of the most chilling films of 2026 for a reported $500,000 production budget, and it features a wildly commanding lead performance that should earn the star “scream queen” status. It's The Handmaid's Tale's Nina Kiri as Evy Babic, one half of the Undertone Podcast duo. While living with and caring for her comatose mother (Michèle Duquet), Evy takes breaks in the middle of the night to podcast with Justin (Adam DiMarco). The two are used to exploring supernatural occurrences and enjoy leaning into their roles as the skeptic and the believer, respectively, but when they receive an anonymous email containing ten audio files, Evy is forced to consider the fact that they may be the real deal. With Undertone now playing in theaters nationwide, Kiri joined me for a Collider Ladies Night interview to discuss her journey as an actor thus far, including her unforgettable run on The Handmaid's Tale, before digging into some of Undertone's most chilling moments. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ronald's ear infection led us to bump our chat about Undertone, Steve's very audio-focused Required Viewing pick, to next week's show, so we had room for a little trailer roundup and a discussion of the re-release plan for Endgame later this year. Then it's on to Ronald's thoughts about Michael, the divisive new biopic of the King of Pop, and a few other things the guys have seen lately.

What happens when a movie podcast reviews a horror film about a podcaster? Welcome to the meta nightmare. This week on The Commentary Booth, Jamie Apps and Corrina Mabey dive into Undertone, the Canadian supernatural horror film written and directed by Ian Tuason in his feature directorial debut. What they find is far more disturbing than your average haunting movie. On paper, it's about a paranormal podcaster receiving a series of disturbing audio recordings. But the deeper they go, the less it feels like a mystery, and more like a slow, suffocating descent into grief, guilt, and something… not entirely explainable.Jamie and Corrina examine why this film lives and dies by its sound design, and why you absolutely need headphones or a cinema-grade surround system to experience it the way Toussaint intended. For the review, Jamie watched Undertone with high-end audio, Corrina didn't, and that contrast shapes a surprisingly different viewing experience.During the episode, we break down the film's masterful use of negative space and camera work that subverts every horror trope you think you know, the career-defining performance from Nina Kiri reacting to nothing but recorded voices and whispers, and the genuinely haunting concept of a Mesopotamian fertility and miscarriage entity that makes the film infinitely more sinister. Then there's the emotional core. Beneath the supernatural elements, Undertone is dealing with caregiving, terminal illness, and the kind of prolonged grief that doesn't really have a clean ending. It's messy. Complicated. And, confronting.Highlights Breakdown: - The sound-first experience - Budget vs Box Office Result: $500K to $20M - Nina Kiri's one-woman show - The Abyzou mythology - Grief is the real horrorBy the time the credits roll, the conversation shifts to interpretation. What actually happened? Was it possession, psychological breakdown, or something in between? The film doesn't hand you answers, which might be why it sticks. If you're into psychological horror that trades jump scares for atmosphere and leaves you thinking long after it ends, this one's worth the listen. This week's episode is brought to you byAustralian Wrestling CardsCheck out more great content from Pario Magazine on our website.-------------------------------------------------------------SUPPORT PARIO MAGAZINE & THE COMMENTARY BOOTH- PATREON- BUY MERCH- AMAZON PRIME VIDEO- TUBEBUDDY- Subscribe to AEW Plus using my code (q0yydoz) to earn $10 in FITE credit- Shop Online With Honey- Shop Online With SatechiMY EQUIPMENT- Elgato Facecam- Rode PodMic- Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP- Streamlabs Talk StudioFOLLOW JAMIE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram- TikTokFOLLOW PARIO MAGAZINE ON SOCIAL MEDIA- Twitter- Facebook- Instagram
GG Hawkins speaks with Kino co-founders Brit MacRae and Daril Fannin about the broken handoff between post-production and release, and how insecure screeners, fragmented feedback workflows, and fear-based distribution norms undermine independent film. They break down Kino's evolution from an interactive streaming idea into a secure post-to-delivery platform, explain how they built a film fund around de-risked sub-$2 million features, and use Undertone as a case study for aligning budgets, creative ambition, and profitability. In this episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and guests Brit MacRae and Daril Fannin discuss... Why the current post-production and release pipeline is still built around insecure links, scattered notes, and outdated habits How piracy, leaks, and weak screener security can hurt filmmakers, investors, and distribution momentum The original idea behind Kino and how it pivoted from interactive streaming to a B2B platform for secure screeners, dailies, cuts, approvals, focus groups, and final delivery Why discoverability is one of the biggest problems in independent film, and why indie projects are competing with TikTok and other forms of passive entertainment How fear-based thinking shapes decisions around marketing, exposure, festivals, and distribution What “LVOD” means to Kino and how the company tried to create a window that adds marketing value without cannibalizing TVOD Why MacRae and Fannin believe filmmakers need to think like business builders, not just artists, when raising money How Kino structured its film fund around contained, creatively aligned stories with budgets under $2 million and meaningful de-risking through incentives and exchange rates Why Undertone made sense as a fund project: one location, a contained story, and a production model that matched the script's scale How equity participation and aligned incentives can help cast, crew, and investors move in the same direction Why iteration, early feedback, and collaborative review should play a larger role in filmmaking, much like they do in tech and animation What kinds of projects Kino is pursuing next, including a Band of Brothers documentary and more genre-focused features Memorable Quotes: “Something's not working and we're going to dig into it.” “Fear makes you stupid.” “Coming to the table with great art is table stakes.” “It's not about the project, it's about the people you're surrounding yourself with.” Guests: Brit MacRae Daril Fannin Resources: Kino Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web: No Film School Facebook: No Film School on Facebook Twitter: No Film School on Twitter YouTube: No Film School on YouTube Instagram: No Film School on Instagram

"The ultimate indie film success story! Writer and director Ian Tuason joins Giles Alderson to discuss his massive breakout horror hit, Undertone. Made for just $500,000, Undertone sparked a bidding war at Fantasia Fest, was acquired by A24 in a 7-figure deal, and is now crushing the global box office ($20M and counting). Ian breaks down how he crafted 'the scariest movie you'll ever hear' by making an audio-driven horror film where only one speaking character (Nina Kiri) is ever shown on screen. We dive deep into the emotional reality of indie filmmaking, as Ian reveals what it was like to shoot the film in his childhood home where he previously cared for his terminally ill parents. We also discuss his background in 360-degree VR horror and how this massive indie hit led to him being hired by Jason Blum and James Wan to write and direct Paranormal Activity 8. Dan and Vicky head back to the movies! This time it's the recent hit sci-fi comedy drama Project Hail Mary starring Ryan Gosling and Sandra Huller directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and based on the book by Andy Weir. Lord and Miller insisted that the special effects be all created practically - the most impressive of which is the character of Rocky. The rock creature was puppeted by James Ortiz and his team with Ortiz providing it's voice. Initially Ortiz's voice was meant as a marker until the directors cast another voice actor but they liked Ortiz's take so much, they kept his voice. Along with that currently playing film, your hosts talk about their recently seen including They Will Kill You, The Bride!, Undertone, Ready or Not 2 and I Swear. Ok, first things first. Let's get it out of the way. Yes, the Empire Podcast team — Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and John Nugent — spend a great deal of this week's podcast answering a listener question about great movie quartets. They also spend a great deal of time, in the Movie News section, talking about The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum. And yes, despite all that, they spectacularly fail to mention Bilbo, Samwise, Merry and Pippin in the former category. So, just letting you know that now lest you wish to shout at your podcast device of choice. Forewarned is forearmed and all that. Or maybe fourwarned is more apt in this case. Anyway, it's a fun episode in which our own quartet also talk Taskmaster series 21, discuss other nuggets of movie news, and review James McAvoy's directorial debut, California Schemin', Francois Ozon's The Stranger, rom-com You, Me & Tuscany, and podcasting horror, Undertone. And Chris has a lovely chat with James McAvoy, who pops into the podbooth to talk about directing for the first time. [41:45 - 1:00:32 approx] Oh, and the group make tentative and fun plans with this week's work experience person. Enjoy.
Listen at your own peril this week. I spoke with Ian Tuason and Nina Kiri, the director and star of Undertone – billed as “the scariest movie you'll ever hear!” It's the story of an isolated podcaster, who makes the terrible mistake of listening to some very unnerving audio files…which then start to bleed into her own life. You can imagine the number it did on me! Ian and Nina talk about the movie's roots in Ian's own experience of late-life care for his parents, and the responsibility of portraying that on screen. We discuss how the film weaponises sound, how the internet is a scary, fascinating place, and even a little exclusive heads up about more to come in this universe. This week's episode of The Interviews is a one of a kind, as the legendary Richard Kind pops in to the podbooth to tell Chris Hewitt all about his role as Max Bialystock in the West End production of Mel Brooks' The Producers. Also popping into the podbooth this week are Regé-Jean Page and Halle Bailey, the ridiculously charming pair who headline new rom-com You, Me & Tuscany. They tell Chris about shooting that film in Tuscany, meeting at the Met Gala, getting splashed by sprinklers, and more. And finally, Mike Muncer has a lovely chat over Zoom with Ian Tuason and Nina Kiri, the director and star of Undertone, a new horror movie all about a podcaster undergoing a terrifying ordeal. That's us every time Adobe Audition decides to update in the middle of an edit. Enjoy!
Evy (Nina Kiri) hosts a paranormal podcast from her childhood home, where she has returned to care for her dying mother. A skeptic to her co-host Justin's (Adam DiMarco) true believer, she keeps the supernatural at arm's length — until anonymous recordings begin arriving: a married couple, their home filled with strange noises, their lives unraveling. As Evy listens, the distance between their story and her own begins to collapse.Mike talks with editor Sonny Atkins about shaping a horror film built around sound, the discipline required to cut a story told almost entirely in audio, and what it means to edit your first feature.Learn more about Sonny at https://www.slatkins.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth
Nick is joined by food writer and horror fan Marnie Shure to talk food, movies, and a few unexpected topics along the way. Marnie kicks things off with her monthly Horror Report, where she and Nick get into Send Help and Undertone. From there, she shares some insight into what makes Kikkoman's soy sauce work, offers tips on saving money on produce, and talks about the upcoming Mortified show in April, which will benefit the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee. Later, Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to revisit a couple of overlooked films, including Things Change with Don Ameche and Capricorn One starring James Brolin. That conversation somehow turns into a deep dive on some of the more unconventional sex symbols of the 70s, with Elliott Gould, Donald Sutherland, and a whole era of shaggy, cigarette-smoking leading men getting their moment. We've clawed through the crypt of our horror library and exhumed 6 of the most catastrophically clueless final girls to ever survive by accident. We rank them from least dumb to absolute dumbass, dissecting every flaw and (begrudgingly) the few strengths that somehow kept them breathing.
