In the 1950s, wholesome whitebread protestants were terrified by the so-called "Race Records" of the likes of Little Richard, Charles Singleton and Nat King Cole. Enter Pat Boone, a palatable alternative to both black musicians and the gyrating hips of Elvis Presley. With his milquetoast covers of black artists' original compositions, Pat Boone quickly surged to superstardom, amassing millions of dollars, jumpstarting a career in film and television, and spreading the good word to his avowedly Christian Conservative audience. In 1997, at age 63, Boone decided to try his hand at an entirely new form of cultural appropriation by shedding his cardigan for a leather vest and choker, and recording In A Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy, an album of cover songs by the likes of Alice Cooper, Ronnie James Dio, Metallica, and his neighbor and friend Ozzy Osbourne. Mike D'Angelo and Ginny Nightshade of Old School Game Show join Heather and Mike to discuss this anomaly and its place in Boone's milieu. What exactly compels a Christian Conservative grandpa, birther and avowed homophobe to give a pass to the most Satanic genre? And is there any value to be found in an album made by such a wretched bigot? It's a long way to the top if you want to croon and crow. Part of the Pantheon Podcast Network.

Probably two of the toughest dudes we've had on the show. Mike D'Angelo owns and operates The Fight Zone in Fort Myers where people from all over town train for years as MMA fighters. D'Angelo says that he he and his family have trained people from practically toddlers into full-grown wrecking machines. Nick Recchia is a professional fighter out of Fight Zone, and is tenured in the SWFL fighting scene. He tells stories of his decisions to walk into an MMA gym after being kicked out of hockey for fighting, his experiences as an amateur fighter, and his more recent decision to start trading concussions for more than just a free steak dinner. If you have an appreciation for physical prowess and conditioning, or you just like to see people beat each other up, check them out! @nickkrecchia @the_fight_zone THANKS FOR LISTENING GO SUPER SAIYAN! - Patreon.com/professorshred Email us cityofpalmspodcast@gmail.com ANCHOR PODCASTS FACEBOOK INSTAGRAM SPOTIFY APPLE PODCASTS - @prof.shred - @kinglombardo47 - @producedbybiscuit --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/daniel-lombardo5/support

MaryLinda Moss is an artist, wife and mother who suddenly became a hostage when an armed gunman stormed into the Silver Lake Trader Joe's store on July 21, 2018 after he'd allegedly shot and wounded his grandmother and girlfriend and led police on a pursuit.   Trader Joe's manager, Melyda Corado, was shot and killed during the initial exchange of gunfire between the suspect, Gene Atkins, and police officers. Some 40 Trader Joe's customers and employees were then held hostage as police negotiators spoke to Atkins and MaryLinda, who at times held the phone during the negotiations.   During this podcast, MaryLinda describes the takeover in detail including how she worked with another customer, Mike D'Angelo, and two store employees to keep the gunman from committing any further violence, and how her earlier life experiences informed her actions that ended with the gunman giving up and walking out of the store in handcuffs with MaryLinda, Mike, and the two store employees. Before film criticism and cinephilia moved from print and theaters to the screen and discussion boards, Mike D'Angelo was already there forming its basis for a serious minded engagement with movies. Mike sits down for this 50th episode of The Cinephiliacs to discuss his original path as a screenwriter and an actor, how he moved from an online phenomenon to a full time film critic, and the way the Internet helped in shaping his uniquely crafted voice. Peter also talks with Mike on his walk out policy, his obsession with puzzlebox movies, and the importance of rhythm in cinema. Finally, they look at one of the strangest American indies of recent memory—Vincent Gallo's Buffalo '66—and how the director-star constantly surprises by both engaging and then breaking with indie conventions. 0:00-2:29 Open3:53-8:32 Establishing Shots - Robert Greene's Actress9:18-1:07:04 Deep Focus - Mike D'Angelo1:07:54-1:09:36 Mubi Sponsorship - Edvard Munch1:10:53-1:31:03 Double Exposure - Buffalo '66 (Vincent Gallo)1:31:08-1:33:28 Close / Outtakes
