John Cusack can't help but be cool.  He just is.  Probably owes Peter Gabriel big time, but it's not just the iconic "boom box" Say Anything thing.  His roles have ranged from record store owner to Edgar Allan Poe, he's heroically saved people from natural disasters and been terrorized by a kid on a bike demanding "two dollars!".  Versatile, right?  So here we have a typically cool 1997 Cusack film which also features a Ghostbuster/Blues Brother!  It gets better: my guest for this episode is a fellow podcaster from "across the pond", Anthony Short (or just "Ant", for short!)  He has an impressive knowledge of film, music, Marillion...all the good things in life, basically.  Now you can have a listen to our spirited banter about one of his favourites: Grosse Pointe Blank.  Why not give it a shot?

It left itself open for a sequel, but is that a good thing? Can a movie shot in this style sustain a franchise or should it be left alone? Even those who have never seen any of their films are likely familiar with names like Five Deadly Venoms and The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. The Battle Wizard definitely belongs on that list.Awesome martial arts fights. A villain with extending metal legs that can break rock. Limb cutting lasers. A protagonist that eats exotic animals. The Battle Wizard has it all and then some. And in between all the wackiness it has a surprisingly well written will they/won't they love story that will gross you out until it warms your heart.Terrestrial has a lot going for it. Its director helmed Hot Tub Time Machine and co-wrote Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity. The cast includes Jermaine Fowler and Pauline Chalamet. The premise is a fan favorite that has been used in screwball comedies and sitcoms. So, what happened?The writing is surprisingly dodgy. There is a science fiction aspect that does nothing to the story but seems like it is supposed to be something very important. Even worse, the characters are very poorly done. Most tellingly, Terrestrial goes out of its way to turn the main character into an awful person that is impossible to get behind. Which makes the movie impossible to enjoy. In his book From Hollywood with Love: The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of the Romantic Comedy, Scott Meslow lays out two ways to tell if a given movie is a rom-com. First, his own definition: “A romantic comedy is a movie where (1) the central plot is focused on at least one romantic love story; and (2) the goal is to make you laugh at least as much as the goal is to make you cry.” And then, The Donald Petrie Test, named for the director of some rom-coms, like Mystic Pizza and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, but also some edge cases, like Miss Congeniality and Grumpy Old Men: “If you removed the love story from this [comedy], would you still have a movie? If the answer is no, it’s a romantic comedy. […] If the answer is yes, it’s a comedy with a romantic subplot.” So those are the litmus tests. Now, does that make Broadcast News a rom-com, or no? Michael Cudlitz plays the iconic Lex Luthor in The CW's hit series "Superman & Lois." He was born on Long Island, New York, and raised in Lakewood Township, New Jersey. He graduated from Lakewood High School in 1982 and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts, where he graduated in 1990. Cudlitz played "Abraham" on AMC's "The Walking Dead" and directed four episodes.
