Text Us Here!Everything feels better when the rules are clear, the stakes are fun, and you can play along from the couch. That's why we couldn't stop arguing about game shows, the classics we grew up on, the weird ones that aged badly, and the newer formats that crank the risk knob to max.We start by trying to define what even counts as a “game show” and immediately break our own brains. Is it only trivia and puzzles like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, or does any competition with a prize qualify? We go down the rabbit hole far enough to (jokingly) label sports as game shows, then climb back out to celebrate the stuff that actually shaped our TV childhoods: Supermarket Sweep chaos, American Gladiators energy, and the Nickelodeon era that had Legends of the Hidden Temple, Double Dare, and Guts locked in the after school hall of fame. Then we hit the darker side of the genre, like The Moment of Truth, where “winning” comes with real life consequences, and we talk about why that kind of discomfort TV works even when it feels gross. We also pitch the comeback we want most: Cash Cab rebuilt for the rideshare age, with rotating cities and surprise trivia for everyday riders. And because we can't end like normal people, we close with a brain fun fact about why your mouth muscles still activate when you read silently.Subscribe, share this with a fellow game show addict, and leave us a review with the one show you'd bring back. In this episode of the AAOS Now Podcast, host Richard Schaefer, MD, FAAOS, sits down with two of orthopaedic surgery's most dedicated advocates for medical student mentorship, William Levine, MD, FAAOS, and Amiethab Aiyer, MD, FAAOS, for a candid conversation about the residency Match process. The discussion tackles the nuts, bolts, and controversies of today's highly competitive application landscape, including how signaling helps students whittle down the number of programs they apply to, why away rotations may have gotten out of hand, and whether every student really needs to do a research year. Drs. Levine and Aiyer share how their decades-long professional relationship helped shape their commitment to guiding the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons. They explain that mentorship is a bidirectional partnership in which the mentee must put forth more than just a desire to learn. They talk about the importance of building a diverse "board" of mentors across institutions. And they encourage students to seek out mentors, including near-peers, who have their “finger on the pulse” of the rapidly-evolving Match process. The episode closes with a candid challenge to prospective applicants: Before attempting to match into orthopaedic surgery, ask yourself why you want to be an orthopaedic surgeon. According to Dr. Levine, mentors should require all of their mentees to answer that question — and if the answer is iffy, encourage them to consider a different specialty. Key Topics Covered in this Episode How the residency Match process works: from application to Match Day Building a mentorship "board": why one mentor isn't enough and how to cultivate relationships across institutions Mentorship as a bidirectional partnership: what mentees must bring to the relationship The origin of OrthoMentor: how Drs. Levine and Aiyer began collaborating to fill a nationwide advising void and how students at institutions with limited advising resources can still access current, accurate guidance Signaling and application caps: understanding the data behind limiting program applications (yes, 100 applications is too many) Away rotations: how many to do and why cohort strategy matters when applying Research years: when they help, when they don't, and what to look for in a productive year Schools without home programs: unique challenges and where to find current guidance Pursuing the right path: why students should reflect on their motivations before pursuing a career in orthopaedic surgery, and why where you train isn't as important as what you do with the opportunity About Our Guests William N. Levine, MD, FAAOS, the Frank E. Stinchfield Professor and Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons; Chief of the Orthopaedics Service at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center; and Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Amiethab Aiyer, MD, FAAOS, Division Chief of foot and ankle surgery and Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; Deputy Editor, Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons

Alyssa is out for one more day, so Mackenzie is back in the co-host chair — and she is MORE than ready for summer break. We kicked things off with Good Vibes and started wondering which celebrities could be showing up in town this weekend for Cavs/Knicks Game 3. In The Group Chat, Mackenzie admits she's exclusively dating one guy… but doesn't like when he calls her his “girlfriend.” Is that weird? We also played another round of Mackenzie's Match Game, talked about the A.I. disaster that completely ruined a college graduation ceremony in Arizona, and took a trip down memory lane with everyone's senior superlatives.
Alyssa is out in Utah, so Mackenzie stepped in to co-host the show today! After another stressful late-night Game 7, the Cleveland Cavaliers pulled off another huge win and Bill admitted he was worried the entire city would wake up depressed if things went the other way. We got to know Mackenzie better with a round of “2 Truths and A Lie,” talked about why the city was overcrowded yesterday, and debated an important driving question: do you honk if the car in front of you doesn't move when the light turns green? We also played “Mackenzie's Match Game,” checked in on Bill's son during “Bike To School” week, and shared the words we purposely mispronounce because it's just more fun that way.
A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
Why do speakers of the same language have different accents? A lively new book called Why We Talk Funny offers a linguist's look at how and why accents develop. And: If you've “stood up” at a wedding, were you supporting the marriage or objecting to it? Plus, a new expression making the rounds: “AI breath.” It describes writing that seems as though it was artificially generated. Also, how to pronounce the name of Henry David Thoreau, when the moistures meet, scare the living daylights out of someone, since Christ left Philadelphia, a cryptic puzzle, anatomical agita, the Dutch roots of coleslaw, Haare auf den Zähnen haben, and It'll grow hair on your back teeth! The night takes a gritty turn with retired NYPD Detective Vic Ferrari recounting a harrowing, bloody 1990s apartment siege, before wrapping up with a nostalgic deep dive into the flawless, "live to tape" television legacy of Match Game and host Gene Rayburn. We usually don't include pilots of series which make it to television, but apparently someone made an exception. Two pilots of the beloved series from the early 70s through the early 80s were done with the question format from the original series. (The humorous questions would arrive about a year later.) The first pilot can easily be found. A word of warning about the second pilot: There is at least one answer which doesn't fly in 2026, and probably shouldn't have flown in 1973.

Best Match Game Answer Ever!
This is a tribute to Bert Kaempfert, German orchestra leader and songwriter who was responsible for some of the biggest and most important songs of the pop era, including signature hits of Frank Sinatra and Wayne Newton. And he had a major impact on the career of the Beatles too.Kaemphert was born in Hamburg in 1923 and studied at the Hamburg School of Music. He formed an orchestra and had his first hit in 1960 with “Wonderland By Night”, which turned him and the orchestra into international stars. In 1961 he launched the recording career of the Beatles when he produced a song called “My Bonnie” for Tony Sheridan and hired the Beatles as the backing band. At the same session he recorded the Beatles first singles, “Ain't She Sweet” sung by John Lennon, and “Cry For A Shadow”, a song composed by John and George Harrison.Kaempfert composed the music to “Strangers In The Night” for Sinatra. Jimi Hendrix worked a bit of that song into his solo in “Wild Thing” at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. And Kaempfert wrote the music for the song “Danke Schoen”, which to this day is Wayne Newton's best known song.Kaempfert also wrote the music for the song “L-O-V-E” which was a hit for Nat King Cole, and “A Swingin Safari”, which became the theme song for “The Match Game” on TV. —----------------------------------------------------------- The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries! Quick recap The meeting began with a discussion about a medical incident involving Keith’s granddaughter and her ongoing recovery, followed by the group sharing their New Year’s Eve experiences and various personal anecdotes. The conversation then shifted to a discussion about McDonald’s menu history and several light-hearted news stories, including stories about monkeys and dinosaur footprints. The conversation ended with a game show trivia quiz hosted by Jill, followed by discussions about New Year’s resolutions and technical aspects of digital devices, before ending with humorous stories and contact information for listeners. Summary Keith, Jill, and Terry discussed a recent incident involving Keith’s granddaughter who swallowed a nail on New Year’s Day. Despite initial concerns, the nail was not found in the emergency room, leading to a hospital stay where she was monitored for its progress through her colon. Keith shared that Adrian was discharged but must continue monitoring her bowel movements for the nail’s removal. The family expressed concern about the incident, with Terry suggesting using a magnet to extract the nail, while Keith emphasized the importance of teaching children not to put foreign objects in their mouths. The group discussed their New Year’s Eve experiences, with Jill mentioning she had to go to the doctor for blood work despite good results, and Terry sharing that he missed the New York Times Square ball drop after falling asleep. They also discussed Terry’s recent incident where he spilled a pitcher of water on his desk, damaging some equipment, and Keith mentioned that McDonald’s McRib's are actually made from pork shoulder and other pork parts, similar to how chicken nuggets are made from ground chicken. News of the Week Jill shared a humorous story about a monkey causing chaos in a Nashville music store, which led to a discussion about escaped monkeys in the southern United States. Keith then shared a heartwarming story about a sea otter pup being reunited with its mother using a recorded distress call played through a Bluetooth speaker. Terry shared a news story about the Bears vs. Lions football game and a humorous AI transcription error where a police officer’s body camera mistakenly transcribed “frog” instead of “fog.” Keith shared a story about 16,000 fossil footprints discovered in Bolivia, which scientists determined belonged to theropod dinosaurs, though the purpose of the footprints remains unclear. The conversation concluded with a brief discussion about how dinosaur footprints are preserved in rock over millions of years. Jill's Trivia Quiz Jill hosted a game show trivia quiz, where she tested Keith and Terry’s knowledge of various game shows. They discussed different shows, including Newlywed Game, Love Connection, and Match Game. Jill explained the rules for answering questions and allowed participants to buzz in with their responses. The quiz covered a range of game shows from different eras, and participants were able to identify some of the hosts and formats. Terry's Top 10 List Terry shared a humorous top 10 list of New Year’s resolutions, including going to the gym and driving past it daily, and learning a new language like “sarcastic teenager.” Anchor Topic The group discussed the DA2 player, with Terry revealing the location of the power button on the right side near the USB ports and explaining how to navigate the menus using the orange button for settings and the shelf key for toggling between lowercase, uppercase, and numeric modes. Terry and Keith discussed the functionality of a new digital player, focusing on its compatibility with a USB keyboard for easier navigation and book selection. Terry shared insights from a call with the library, confirming that users can log into the player on the Bard website to update their Wishlist and download books without needing to add a new player. They noted the player’s durability and weight, comparing it to the Victor Reader, and discussed the potential for using a Bluetooth keyboard for better portability. Terry also mentioned tinkering with meta glasses and the possibility of customizing their lenses, while Keith mentioned not receiving his sunglasses from the previous year. Email and Final Thoughts Keith shared a humorous email about golfing firefighters and a father-son story involving George Washington. The final word from our AI companions The meeting primarily revolved around a light-hearted discussion of New Year’s resolutions, jokes, and humorous anecdotes shared among Keith, Jill, and Terry. They exchanged various jokes and funny stories, including references to Netflix, New Year’s traditions, and personal anecdotes. Keith encouraged listeners to share their funny family stories and questions about blindness, and he reminded everyone to visit their website for the latest episodes. The conversation ended with Keith signing off and providing contact information for listeners to contribute to the show. Show notes written by AI, edited as needed by Keith. Also, the boys look back at some obscure (and largely forgotten) game and quiz shows, including "Don Adams' Screen Test," "The Fun Factory," "The Wizard of Odds" and "The Magnificent Marble Machine."
