In the eleventh episode of Season 11: The Son of Cult Flicks, Kyle is joined by editor Kristi Shimek and screenwriter August Gummere to discuss the off-kilter dark teen comedy that ventures into the surrealist psychology of a loser teen who needs to grow beyond his oppressive sense of high school, self, and the present in Savage Steve Holland's semi-autobiographical Better Off Dead (1985).
April 18-24, 1998 This week Ken welcomes actor, producer, director, writer Gregory Lay. Ken and Gregory discuss growing up as a TV Guide guy, calling out sick to school for game shows, cultural markers, pop culture reflections, making the case for what you like, Press Your Luck, Classic Concentration, Savage Steve Holland, One Crazy Summer, why Late Night talk shows are totally useless now, access to stars, actors who started on TV, George Clooney, Elizabeth Shue, Michelle Pfeiffer in Delta House, Meritt Ultra Lights, pay TV channels, Break Down with Kurt Russell, being forever disturbed by Pet Semetary, The Omen, Backdraft, being terrrified of The Incredible Hulk, how people can't stop talking like Hunter S. Thompson or Jeff Goldblum when they hang out with either, failed pilot "My Dad with the President's Daughter", how we'd vote for Dabney Coleman for president, E! True Hollywood Story: Bob Crane, how the X-Files CLEARLY didn't have a plan, the fake Dukes, The Moonlighting problem, realism vs. escapism, shows with all bad people, Shelly Long and Robert Hayes returning to sitcoms, The Brady Bunch films, how irony can be done well, The Prophecy, all the weird religious films around the turn of the Century, Presumed Innocent, when Leslie Neilson stopped being funny (hint: It's when he started to think he was funny), The Omega Man, Frankenstein, Top Gun, the 30th Anniversary of Friends, movies that don't hold up, movies that DO hold up, Steven Segal, Jurrasic Park, CGI, when stories are thrown by the wayside, how Dark City is The Matrix if it was good, being trapped in an elevator, Beyond Belief, memes, Scott Baio's complete lack of selfawareness and reality, Pumpkinhead, Stan Winston, hating crossovers, and why P. Diddy was a sack of garbage even BEFORE we learned about him being a sexual deviant assaulting waste of humanity.
Savage Steve Holland's One Crazy Summer has mostly been overlooked, or forgotten, a shame since it blends genres and media into a big sweet, salty, and sometimes spicy milkshake of a movie. Guilty pleasure? Not quite, according to Mike Wirth who wonders, "Why couldn't John Cusack's Hoops McCann have been Hoops Leibowitz?" A Southern, Jewish-American originally from New York, Mike focuses on social justice and identity, fusing complex and personal issues and influences into his art. This autumn, he leads a community mural project with the Charlotte Jewish Federation, commemorating those lost on October 7th. His information design "How Our Laws are Made" was featured on the Daily Show blog in 2011, and lives on at Wikipedia. Listen in as we discuss whammy animations, world-in-world experiences, Better Off Dead, Grosse Pointe Blank, Singles, Chainsaw Date and Hemorrhoids from Hell, Bobcat Goldthwait, comic book icons Archie and Betty and Veronica, and The Goonies, plus silly sequel and prequel ideas for One Crazy Summer.

Hello and get ready for so much Van Halen once again! And Better Off Dead! So much good stuff that could have only happened in the 1980s converging in one place. Along with more 70s Van Halen history too, of course. We'll cover stuff like: Savage Steve Holland's real life experiences that went into his script, and later work in children's cartoons Michael Anthony's first meetup with Sammy Hagar Eddie's challenges in early life as a shy kid would couldn't speak english in America His challenges shaking off the controlling influence of David Lee Roth and Ted Templeman making "1984" the way HE and Alex and Donn Landee wanted to John Cusack's initial hatred of "Better Off Dead" and his eventual backpedal The Van Halen family's journey from The Netherlands to Pasadena by boat and by train My shock at finding out Alex's drums on certain songs were actually an electric kit Al, Mike, and Sammy's soundcheck routines and gear specs on the 1993 tour The AC/DC songs Eddie says inspired "Panama" and "Drop Dead Legs" The making of Van Halen 2 and how it was intentionally different from the debut album How "Fair Warning" influenced what happened on "Diver Down" which in turn influenced "1984" Eddie's on-the-road-all-night-every-night initial fling with Valerie Bertinelli that morphed straight into their marriage What happens when a couple of lucky young dudes from Pennsylvania get to party with Van Halen and MTV doesn't know how to keep up with it all AND SO MUCH MORE. Including lots of my musical interludes and suprise voices from throughout time and space! Even more than usual. Please remember that Rock n' Roll is the best, and so are you! Jodie and Andrea are hitting the slopes and running from indefatigable paperboys with this week's movie, Savage Steve Holland's 1985 black comedy, Better Off Dead. We talk about John Cusack's general disdain for the film (and we uncover some recent SHOCKING developments on that front), try to explain some of the truly bizarre ongoings in Lane Meyer's world, and talk about our shared love for the world's coolest French (FRONCH) exchange student, Monique Junet (Diane Franklin 4-->).We figured we couldn't end our first year as a podcast without covering Jersey's own Kevin Smith, so next week, we're watching Chasing Amy. Katie and Bridget do a lot of UMs as they re-watch the 80's movie: Better Off Dead... ! It's a somehow rated PG movie all about a teenager looking to end his life when his girlfriend dumps him.... Yup! We're also confused! Come along as we meet Lane, a walking boyfriend of red flags who spends the movie being mopey and possibly schizophrenic once his girlfriend Beth dumps him for the captain of the ski team - our own real life Ken doll named Roy. Along the way there's his best friend Charles, a 55 year old teenager, and Monique, a foreign exchange student who may or may not be in a human trafficking situation. They help Lane get over his sadness and win at a ski competition - which is apparently what this was all about(!?) except it actually wasn't(!?) but FINE! Will Lane be able to survive all the way to the end of the movie? Does he skimp out the paper boy on a mere $2!? Released in 1985, it stars John Cusack and was written and directed by Savage Steve Holland.

What if John Hughes and Savage Steve Holland had a baby and named that baby Carl Reiner and then that baby directed a movie, and that movie was about a high school gym teacher who had big plans for the summer but was forced to cancel them and had to teach an English class of misfit goof-offs but fortunately found out his unconventional brand of teaching, fun field trips, and overall partying, connected with the kids and even inspired them to succeed? On this very View Askewniverse episode of One and Done TV, Ian and Silent John return to the Quick Stop to review the ABC adult animated comedy from 2000 - Clerks: The Animated Series! Kevin Smith's 1994 black and white comedy cult classic Clerks gets a cartoon makeover, with characters Dante, Randall, Jay, and Silent Bob finding themselves in wacky situations stuffed with self-referential humor. Ian taunts John with his recent theatrical viewing of 2001: A Space Odyssey. John appreciates the Savage Steve Holland ski-jerk film Better Off Dead. John and Ian remember renting this show from Blockbuster, but aren't sure whose couch they laughed themselves stupid on! With this week's theatrical release of Clerks III (aka Clerks 3), the hosts revisit some of Kevin Smith's other work (Dogma, Tusk, and the like) and discuss the uncanny similarities between The Sandlot, Stand By Me, and Animal House! We bring the summer to a close with a very silly "Savage" Steve Holland movie starring John Cusack as a cynical cartoonist and Demi Moore as the singer he helps to save her family home on Nantucket. Sure, it's frequently juvenile, but it's a fun movie, features Bobcat Goldthwait, Joe Flaherty, Joel Murray, and Curtis Armstrong. We ask why Goldthwait is funny, what's the deal with Demi Moore's hair, and what is up with William Hickey, who may or may not be in a Weekend-At-Bernies situation.
How many calories in every hamburger McDonald's has ever sold? Was Booker the right career move for Richard Grieco? All this and more is covered in What Now. Watch it has, among others, a correct rating for Do The Right Thing and a wildly unfair rating for The Tall Guy. Listen Up finds us divided on The Ramones' "Pet Sematary," but united on 10,000 Maniacs. Dave agrees that Billy Zane is One To Watch, then protests the Ones To Watch. And we only have one pop culture feature this month, but when it's as memorable as Christina's sitdown with Charlie Sheen, that's all you need.QUICK LINKS

This 80's flick is sometimes described as “Better Off Dead Goes To The Beach” because it reunites young leading man John Cusack with writer-director Savage Steve Holland for a tale of teenage angst and the quest to find love. This time the quest takes us to Nantucket where our lead gets involved with cute and fuzzy bunnies, snobby preppies, insane mechanics, a killer dolphin with rabies, and a hippie-ish singer about to lose her house to a very rich lobster restaurant magnate. So don't miss the ferry and don't forget to pay your tab for Granny's dinner as Tim Williams and guest co-host Nicholas Pepin from "Pop Culture Roulette" Podcast discuss “One Crazy Summer” on this episode of the 80's Flick Flashback podcast! Self-proclaimed John Cusack lovers Ash and Gene were shocked when listener Scott H. commissioned "One Crazy Summer." A Cusack and Savage Steve Holland team-up we'd never seen? Yes, please! But Big D knew exactly what we were in for: 1986 was his year to shine, a year when everything was coming up Ebert, and this movie took him right back to those magical days. In this episode of Shat The Movies, we get into the director's gratuitous use of animation, how hard it is for a kid to make $3,000, a debate on Bobcat Goldthwait, the difference between love and being wanted by women, and Demi Moore's singing career. Big D points out the glaring similarities between "One Crazy Summer" and "Better Off Dead." Gene questions whether the movie is secretly linked to Tori Amos. And we all shrug at logic being thrown out the window. "They're out of school, out on Nantucket, and out of their minds. With this crowd, anything can happen!" For our final episode in our "Summer at the Cinema Series", we will be discussing the wacky comedy 'One Crazy Summer' starring John Cusack, Demi Moore and Bobcat Goldthwait. Written and directed by Savage Steve Holland.
What do Demi Moore and Bobcat Goldthwait have in common? If you guessed the 1986comedy “One Crazy Summer” ...then we should've made that question more challenging. Butthen again, the John Cusack film raises so many questions. Is throwing a bunch of money intothe air the only way to escape a biker gang? Is this movie just a low-stakes version of “BetterOff Dead”? And, how many lobsters were hurt making this thing? The Old Roommates awaitsatisfactory montage music and revisit director Savage Steve Holland's opus.Follow Old Roommates on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram @OldRoommates, and email us at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. Are we back to John Cusack already? We went from "Say Anything" to the 1986 "Savage" Steve Holland film "One Crazy Summer". There's some debate over just how hot Demi Moore is, and spoiler alert, only one of the four of us are in the "not" category. Hannah suggests a way to censor some of Terry's more problematic slips with some creative sound effects. It was either that or another "trigger warning" and that would have probably made Rob's head explode. Garrett is the only one with a lengthy echo chamber this week. You can be the judge if it's lengthy because Garrett is long-winded AF, and likes to hear himself talk or if it would have only been 2 minutes long if not for the 3CGADD gang's constant interruptions. When Beth breaks up with him -- throwing Lane over for Roy Stalin, a jock douchebag who can ski the most dangerous mountain around -- Lane attempts suicide several times… like you do in a good comedy.Jess Byard and Mike "McBeardo" McPadden, author of Teen Movie Hell, join Mike to discuss the film and its fast follow-up, One Crazy Summer.Learn more about your ad choices.
