The Savvy Psychologist's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Mental Health
559. You scroll past a photo of someone's vacation, someone's promotion, someone's body — and something in you quietly deflates. That's not weakness. That's your brain doing exactly what it evolved to do. This week, Dr. Judy Ho breaks down the neuroscience of social comparison — why we do it, why social media has made it exponentially harder to resist, and three evidence-based tools to break the ranking cycle and find your way back to yourself.Have a mental health question? From the desk of Pete: "Hey do you remember that cute movie Stephen Spielberg did about the little flying robots. Man I haven't seen that in decades. I'll just pop it in and take a fun little trip down memory lane. wut..I...oh no...OH GAWD! I DON'T REMEMBER THIS BEING A SAD MOVIE! MAKE IT STOP! Charlie and Pete were ill-prepared for the emotional semitruck that *batteries not included turned into. From the first few minutes of the movie, the cozy childhood memories of the film were dashed to bits by an awareness that can only be brought on by the personal experiences from your passage through the years. It was shocking how a film can change so drastically from a different perspective. Friends, Spielberg wonderfully captures delight, magic and wonder in this adorable film while making it both very real and personal. Grab your kids, a big bowl of popcorn, maybe a big box of tissues and enjoy the hell out of this movie."
Have you ever looked at your husband doing absolutely nothing wrong and felt nothing but irritation? You know it's not really about him. But knowing that doesn't help when you're already in it, snapping at him for breathing too loudly, or crying and unable to explain why, then drowning in guilt afterward. Because you love him. Your hormones are throwing a very convincing party in your nervous system, and nobody sent you the invite. Here's what this episode breaks down for you:Why your brain is literally in threat mode before your period, and why small things feel like actual emergencies The serotonin and dopamine piece nobody explains, including why you can't feel satisfied even when he's doing everything rightHow cortisol piles on and why doing more actually makes the second half of your cycle harder, not easierThis episode won't tell you to just "track your cycle and eat more greens". It will give you actual context for what your body is doing - and more importantly, what it's trying to do - so that the next time you're in that phase and you feel like a completely different person, you have some language for it. Not just "sorry, PMS," but a real understanding of why your brain is scanning for danger in a safe marriage. If you're a husband reading this: this one's for you too. It will help you understand what's happening on a brain and hormone level so you can stop taking it personally (as hard as that is) and start working together on it.Breakfast GuideNourish Tracker - Discount code: HAPPILYHORMONALBook a FREE Hormone Strategy Call with meGrab your Happily Hormonal Quick Start GuideNEED HELP FIXING YOUR HORMONES?Hormone Imbalance Quiz - Find out which of the top 3 hormone imbalances affects you most!Join Nourish Your Hormones Coaching Send us a text with episode feedback or ideas! Britain is full of architectural talent and ideas. So why is our affordable housing in such a state? 'We need to think of unusual sites and then do something special with them,' says the architecture critic and writer Jonathan Glancey, who joins James Fisher on this week's Country Life Podcast.Making housing better for all of us — not just the privileged few — is at the heart of the discussion between James and Jonathan, just as it's one of the key issues in Jonathan's latest book, Where We Live: The Fractured Art of British Housebuilding and How to Build the Homes We Need, which is out in June 2026.Jonathan's years of experience and expertise — from his first job at the The Architectural Review to his many years as The Guardian's architecture and design editor — shines through as he talks about everything from the model villages built by the great railway companies of Victorian Britain through to the huge mistakes made in social housing between 1945 and 1990. He illuminates the topic in fascinating detail, in a talk which is by turns inspiring, depressing and forward-looking. We hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed making it.Where We Live: The Fractured Art of British Housebuilding and How to Build the Homes We Need is published by Icon Books on June 20, 2026 — you can order a copy now from all good bookshops.Episode creditsHost: James FisherGuest: Jonathan GlanceyEditor and producer: Toby KeelMusic: JuliusH via Pixabay Hosted on Acast. President Trump has survived yet another assassination attempt as a crazed leftist opened fire at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Democratic politicians and pundits are circulating rhetoric about turning down the rhetoric on both sides but it is clear by the incredible number of attempts on Trump's life that one side is encourage a culture of assassination and violence. J. Burden joins me to discuss why conservatives haven't taken the subject seriously enough and how to make it stop. Hunter and Jessica are back to break down the intense pressure of Andor Season 2, Episode 10, "Make it Stop". The timeline has officially jumped to one year before the Battle of Yavin, and poor double-agent Lonnie is absolutely "shook". After being buttered up by a surprisingly gentle Luthen on a very public Coruscant park bench, Lonnie finally delivers the ultimate Rogue One setup, dropping the intel on the Empire's kyber crystal strip-mining operation, Jedha, and a guy named Galen Erso. Sadly, it's RIP for Lonnie, though at least a Dave Filoni-approved Loth cat is the one to find his body. Meanwhile, Dedra Meero smarmily struts into the antique shop thinking she's finally trapped her rebel spy, only to discover Luthen has melted his comms with acid and literally stabbed himself to avoid interrogation. Hunter and Jessica question Luthen's incredibly messy methods, debating whether a Mandalorian-style poison pill would have been a much smarter play. Ultimately, Dedra's solo ambition completely blows up in her face, resulting in her getting arrested and questioned by her very own newly-promoted assistant. But the real MVP of the episode is Kleya. The hosts dissect her tragic backstory of witnessing Imperial executions as a child and her progression into a hardened rebel. In the present timeline, she pulls off a masterclass hospital infiltration by stealing scrubs, hijacking a hovering space-wheelchair, and casually abandoning an elderly alien grandmother to sneak past security. It all leads to a heartbreaking final sequence where Kleya must finish the job, crying as she pulls the plug on Luthen's life support. Plus, stick around for the hosts' quick thoughts on the upcoming Andor comic bridge to Rogue One, Darth Maul's glorious return in Shadow Lord, and the countdown to The Mandalorian and Grogu.Join us on Facebook: The Purrgil Pod. There's a way to sound spiritually mature while staying completely unformed, and therapy culture is helping people do just that. This week on Win Today, Matt Chandler joins us to confront the drift we're experiencing: where therapy culture replaces repentance, where identity confusion isn't grieved, and where safe Christian jargon sounds right but does nothing to transform the soul. We talk about why discipleship doesn't always feel safe. Why comfort doesn't heal—it sedates. And how complaining isn't just venting; it's forming your view of God. Matt names the thin theology that's left people chasing emotional relief instead of spiritual formation. This conversation doesn't throw stones at therapy. But it does confront what happens when comfort becomes your gospel and language becomes your liturgy. If you've traded formation for slogans, been discipled more by feelings than by truth, or confused Christian language with actual obedience, this conversation isn't just timely—it's necessary. On this episode, Dominic, Hannah, and Ben break down the series finale of Andor, analyzing the last three episodes, “Make It Stop,” “Who Else Knows?,” and “Jedha, Kyber, Erso.” They talk about the new insight we got into Luthen and Kleya's history, the highs and lows of the life of Dedra Meero, the great director Krennic, and the proper introduction to K-2SO. They also talk about how Cassian's story wrapped up on the series and interfaces with what we saw in Rogue One. Plus, the politics of the Rebel Alliance, the issues with the second season's structure, and the return of Nemik's manifesto. All this and much more!
