In the place he did not choose — the place that looked like punishment, like the ruin of everything — something began to happen that never could have happened anywhere else. He did not just survive there. He began to rise. Favor found him. Everything he touched started to prosper. The very place that was meant to bury him became the place he was quietly being positioned and prepared for something far bigger than the life he lost.The place he did not choose was the place God had chosen for him.And it was not only for him. What happened in that place spilled over onto everyone around him — even the household of the man who owned him was blessed because of the one who had been dragged there against his will. YOU have been praying for the wrong thing.Not because YOUR heart is wrong. Because YOU have been asking for what YOU think will get YOU through the day — and settling for it — when God has been standing there the whole time with something so much bigger that YOUR request almost sounds small next to it. YOU learned to ask for enough to survive. YOU stopped asking for the thing that would actually change everything.Acts 3 is the story of a man in exactly that trap.He was in the same spot he was every day, doing the only thing he knew to do to make it through — asking for a little help, a little relief, just enough to get by one more day. It was all he expected. It was all he thought was possible for someone in his condition. So he asked for the small thing.And he was told no.Here is what most people miss. The two men he asked did not have what he requested — and they said so, plainly. But instead of walking past him, one of them said a sentence that stopped everything. He told the man to look at them. “When You Long for God: A Psalm of Desire” Psalm 63 Week 4 of “Summer Psalms: Ancient Songs for Modern Hearts” We've spent three weeks exploring Psalms that meet us in crisis, in waiting, in uncertainty. This final week, we explore something different: longing. Not crisis. Not waiting. But a deep ache for God's presence. A spiritual thirst. A heart that says, “I need more of God than I currently have.” Summer is a season when we can feel this. Slower pace. Time to think. Time to notice what we're missing. Time to feel the gap between who we are and who we're called to be. Some of you know this feeling. You remember when your faith was alive. When prayer felt real. When God felt close. And somewhere along the way, it faded. And now you're feeling the absence. You're longing for what you've lost. This is when you need Psalm 63. David wrote this psalm in a wilderness season—literally fleeing for his life, camping in desert places. And in that wilderness, in that loneliness, something awakened in him. A desperate hunger for God. A longing for God's presence that was stronger than his physical need for food or water. “O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh yearns for You, in a dry and weary land where there is no water” (Psalm 63:1). That's the heart cry of this psalm. Not need. Longing. THE PSALM: LISTEN TO DAVID'S DESIRE FOR GOD Psalm 63:1-2, “O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh yearns for You, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. Thus I have beheld You in the sanctuary, to see Your power and Your glory.” Notice the language. “My soul thirsts.” “My flesh yearns.” This is not intellectual. This is visceral. David's entire being—soul and body—is reaching for God. Then verse 3: “Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, I will praise You.” This is the central declaration of the psalm. God's lovingkindness is better than life itself. Better than comfort. Better than security. Better than anything else. Then verses 5-8: “My soul is satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth offers praises with joyful lips. When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. Because You have been my help, and in the shadow of Your wings I sing for joy. My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.” David is in the wilderness. Physically uncomfortable. Possibly hungry. But spiritually satisfied. His longing for God has been met, and that meeting satisfies more than food could satisfy. THE REALITY: SPIRITUAL THIRST AND THE WILDERNESS Here's what most of us don't talk about: Many of us have drifted from real faith into routine faith. We still go to church. We still pray (maybe). We still believe (sort of). But there's no fire. No longing. No passionate seeking. We've settled for less than what's available. Maybe it happened gradually. Life got busy. Kids. Work. Responsibilities. Mortgage. The grind. And somewhere between the busyness, the intimacy with God faded. Prayer became obligation instead of conversation. Worship became routine instead of real. We show up, we go through the motions, we leave feeling like we've checked a box. Or maybe it happened because we've experienced disappointment. We prayed and God didn't answer the way we wanted. We trusted and felt let down. We gave our whole heart and got hurt. And now, to protect ourselves, we've backed away. We keep our distance. We believe in God intellectually, but we don't long for God emotionally. We've built walls. Or maybe we've just gotten comfortable. Our faith became comfortable. Manageable. Safe. And somewhere along the way, we forgot what it felt like to actually hunger for God. To want Him like we want food and water. To seek Him like a person lost in the desert seeks water. But Psalm 63 invites us to something different: passionate faith. Living faith. The kind that says, “My soul thirsts for You. My flesh yearns for You.” And here's the beautiful part: this longing often awakens in the wilderness. Not in comfort, but in hard places. In loneliness. In disappointment. In seasons that strip away the comfortable surface and show us what we really need. I think of a woman I know who grew up in the faith. Church every Sunday. Youth group. Christian college. The whole package. But somewhere along the way, it all became mechanical. Prayer was something she did in the morning because it was routine. Worship was something that happened on Sunday because that's what you do. Scripture reading was a check mark on a discipline list. But there was no fire. No joy. No longing. Then one season, she got honest with God. “I don't feel anything,” she said in prayer. “I've lost my passion. I've lost my longing for You. What happened to me?” And instead of pretending everything was fine, instead of beating herself up, she started seeking. Real seeking. She read Scripture differently—not to check a box, but asking God to speak. She prayed differently—out loud, honest, raw. She started going on prayer walks. She joined a small group where she could be real about her struggle. And gradually—not all at once, but gradually—that longing came back. Not because her circumstances changed. Not because a crisis forced her to seek. But because she stopped settling for routine and started pursuing real intimacy. APPLICATION: THE WILDERNESS AWAKENS LONGING One reason Psalm 63 is so powerful is that David wrote it in the wilderness—in hard circumstances. Not in comfort, but in the dry and weary place. And in the wilderness, something awakened. His longing for God. The text says, “my soul thirsts for You; my flesh yearns for You, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” The wilderness wasn't a detour from his spiritual journey. It was the place where his spiritual passion was rekindled. Sometimes we need the wilderness to wake us up. Not the crisis that demands rescue. Not the waiting that teaches patience. But the loneliness that makes us realize what we're missing. The wilderness that shows us how thirsty we actually are. C.S. Lewis wrote about this. He talked about “the sweet poison of false security.” When life is comfortable, when everything is fine, when we have enough security and enough entertainment and enough success, we stop seeking God desperately. We're satisfied with the surface. We're content with routine. But when comfort is stripped away, when we're alone in the wilderness, when the things we thought satisfied us don't, the real longing surfaces. And that's actually a gift. Your dissatisfaction might not be a sign that something's wrong with you. It might be the Holy Spirit beckoning you back. It might be the beginning of a deeper journey into intimacy with God. THE DISCIPLINE: PURSUING GOD DELIBERATELY Notice what David does in the wilderness. He doesn't just experience longing passively. He pursues it actively. He doesn't wait for God to force intimacy. He reaches out. “Thus I have beheld You in the sanctuary, to see Your power and Your glory” (verse 2). He's remembering encounters with God. He's meditating on God's presence and power. He's calling to mind the times when he experienced God's character firsthand. In the middle of the desert, he's remembering what God looked like in the sanctuary. “When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches” (verse 6). He's being intentional. In the quiet hours when he can't sleep—and you know, if you're camping in the desert and your enemies are hunting you, you're not sleeping well—he's choosing to think about God. To remember. To meditate. To rehearse God's faithfulness and character. Have you ever woken in the middle of the night, your mind overcome with the burden of worry or anxiety? I have, I have been there many times myself. What to do? Where to turn? “I meditate on You in the night watches.” “My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me” (verse 8). He's clinging. Holding tight. Desperately grasping. Not distantly believing, but closely holding. Not going through the motions, but actively, physically, emotionally clinging. This is the practice. Deliberately seeking. Meditating. Remembering. Clinging. It's work. It's intentional. It's not passive. In our comfortable lives, we can drift without noticing. Without intention. We wake up one day and realize the fire is gone. But if we want to recover a passionate faith, if we want to feel that longing again, we have to be deliberate. We can't expect it to happen to us. We have to cultivate it. We have to carve out time. Time to pray without an agenda. Time to read Scripture not looking for a quick answer, but wanting to know God. Time to worship not because it's Sunday, but because we're hungry. Time to sit in silence and just be present to God. We have to remember. Deliberately recall the times when you knew God was real. Meditate on God's past faithfulness. Let memories of encounter stir your heart. We have to confess our drift. Get honest. “I've settled for routine. I've kept my distance. I want more. I want to long for You like David longed for You.” And we have to persist. Because recovering spiritual passion isn't always immediate. It takes time. It takes practice. But it's worth it. THE INVITATION: TASTE AND SEE Here's the profound promise at the end of Psalm 63: “My soul is satisfied as with marrow and fatness” (verse 5). David's thirst has been satisfied. His longing has been met. And the satisfaction is complete. “Better than life,” he says about God's lovingkindness. And that's the invitation Psalm 63 extends to you: Taste this. Experience real intimacy with God. Let your longing be satisfied. Not in the future. Not when circumstances are better. But now. Even in the wilderness. Even in the mundane. Even in summer when you have time to notice what's missing—that's when you can discover what's available. HOW TO PRAY THIS PSALM First: Pray it in quiet moments. Psalm 63 is a meditation. It's meant for early morning or late night. The times when you have space to think and feel and long. Second: Be honest about your longing (or lack of it). If you've drifted, admit it. “O God, I've lost my thirst for You. Awaken it in me again.” Third: Remember encounters with God. Think back to times when you knew God was real. Times when prayer felt alive. Times when His presence was tangible. Let those memories stir your longing. Fourth: Meditate on God's character. “Your lovingkindness is better than life.” Spend time thinking about what that means. What does it look like to choose God over everything else? Fifth: Practice spiritual disciplines. Read Scripture. Pray. Worship. Sit in silence. These aren't meant to be legalistic. They're meant to be pathways toward intimacy. Ways of saying to God, “I want more of You.” Sixth: Cling. Don't hold back. Don't keep God at a distance to protect yourself. The promise is that His right hand upholds you. You're safe to pursue Him desperately. THE GIFT OF DESIRE Some of you have never lost this longing. Your faith has always been alive. Your heart has always reached for God. You're the kind of person who finds joy in worship, who experiences real connection in prayer, who feels God's presence tangibly. That's beautiful. Treasure it. Keep pursuing. Keep clinging. Keep letting Him satisfy your deepest thirst. And please, help the rest of us remember what we're aiming for. Others of you have lost it. The fire has faded. The intimacy has grown distant. Maybe it was gradual. Maybe it was sudden. But you can feel the absence. You remember what it was like to know God intimately, and you grieve the loss. Psalm 63 is an invitation to remember. To seek again. To let your soul thirst for God like it once did. The longing can return. The fire can be rekindled. It takes intention, but it's possible. And still others of you are in the first awakening. You're beginning to feel the longing. You're beginning to notice what's missing. That restlessness you feel? That's not a sign of crisis. That's a sign of spiritual health. That ache is the Holy Spirit calling you back to intimacy. Don't dismiss it. Don't medicate it. Pay attention to it. Let it lead you toward God. CONCLUSION As we close this summer of Psalms, we've journeyed through crisis, through waiting, through uncertainty, and now to longing. Four different seasons of the soul. Four ancient prayers that speak to modern hearts. But Psalm 63 reminds us of the heart of it all. Everything else—the rescues, the waiting, the guidance—it all points to this: a soul that longs for God. A heart that says, “Your lovingkindness is better than life.” That's the invitation of summer. Not just to survive the season. But to rediscover what you're longing for. To let the slower pace awaken your heart. To feel the thirst. To take steps toward intimacy. And to taste and see that the Lord is good. Because when you've tasted, when you've known real intimacy with God, you realize: this is what you were made for. This is what satisfies. This is home.

When we sin and feel the weight of it, most of us have one instinctive response: hide. We pull back from God, we feel the shame settle in, and we wonder if we have disappointed Him too deeply this time. But that instinct — as old as Adam and Eve reaching for fig leaves in the garden — is precisely what God's discipline is designed to interrupt. He does not let us drift without consequence because He is indifferent. He disciplines us because He is a good Father who loves us too much to leave us where we are. Hebrews 12:11 is honest about what discipline feels like in the moment — it is sorrowful, not joyful. There is no use pretending otherwise. But the verse does not stop there. It promises that for those who are trained by it, discipline yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. The discomfort is never the destination; it is the path back to fellowship with the Father, back to sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, back to the image of Christ being formed more fully in us. Our position before God never changes when we sin — we are still His, still covered by the righteousness of Christ, still loved with an unconditional and pursuing love that nothing can stop. But repentance matters, because sin hinders fellowship, and God wants us close. When the Father's correction comes, the wisest and most freeing response is not to run from it, but toward it — and toward Him. Hiding from God when we sin only deepens the distance — repentance is not what earns us back His love, but it is what keeps our fellowship with Him open and unhindered. Discipline is uncomfortable by design — but it is always purposeful, working in us the peaceful fruit of righteousness that comfortable seasons cannot produce on their own. Our position before God never changes when we sin — we are still His children, still covered in Christ's righteousness — but sin can make our hearts grow callous and our sensitivity to the Holy Spirit grow dim. Conviction, repentance, and discipline are gifts, not punishments — they are evidence of a Father who loves us too much to leave us where we are and is actively conforming us into the image of His Son. Today's Prayer Heavenly Father, when I sin, my first response is to hide because I feel like I have disappointed You. Help my heart to understand Your great love and mercy toward me — that Christ died so I could be called Your child, and nothing can change that or separate me from Your love. Because You are a good Father, You discipline Your children so we can grow and be transformed into more of Your likeness. When I stray and disobey, make me quick to repent and run to You rather than away from You. He Gets Us#RTTBROS #Nightlight"For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin." — Hebrews 4:15Eric Liddell is one of the most remarkable Christian athletes who ever lived. Most people know him from the film Chariots of Fire, the Scottish sprinter who refused to run on Sunday at the 1924 Paris Olympics because of his convictions, then went on to win gold in a race that wasn't even his specialty. What fewer people know is what happened after the glory days.Liddell went to China as a missionary and was eventually captured by Japanese forces during World War II and interned in a prison camp at Weihsien. He spent his final years not in stadiums, but behind barbed wire, ministering to fellow prisoners, tutoring children, and organizing sports for the internees to keep their spirits alive. He died in that camp in February 1945, just five months before it was liberated.One of the testimonies that came out of that camp afterward was the account of a young man who had been struggling terribly with despair. He went to Liddell and poured out his heart, and Liddell didn't offer him platitudes. He said, "I know what it is to have everything stripped away and to wonder what God is doing." He had lived it. He had run in glory and he had suffered in a prison camp, and because of that, the young man felt genuinely understood. Not just advised. Understood.That is a pale picture of what Jesus offers us in Hebrews 4:15. The writer tells us that our High Priest, Jesus Himself, was touched with the feeling of our infirmities. He was tempted in all points as we are. He knew hunger, exhaustion, grief, betrayal, loneliness, and physical agony. He wept at a graveside. He sweat drops of blood in a garden. He cried out from a cross.When you bring your pain to Jesus, you are not bringing it to someone who has only read about suffering in a book. You are bringing it to the One who entered into the full weight of human experience and carried it without sin. He is not a distant God who looks down from a comfortable heaven and offers you theological explanations. He is a Savior who says, "I know. I have been there. Come to me."Whatever you are carrying tonight, He understands it at a depth no one else can reach.Let's pray: Lord Jesus, thank You for not staying at a distance. Thank You for entering into our pain, our temptation, our sorrow. Because You understand, we can come boldly to You tonight with everything we are carrying. Therefore, even I, though I am unworthy of heaven, earth and of this transitory life, having given myself completely to sin becoming a slave to pleasure and defiling Your Image – yet being Your creation – I despair not of my salvation in my wretchedness. But, emboldened by Your infinite Compassion, I draw near. Therefore, Loving Christ, receive me also as You received the harlot, the thief, the publican and the prodigal. Take away the heavy burden of my sins, You Who take away the sins of the world, Who heal all human infirmity, Who call to Yourself those who are weary and heavy-laden, granting them rest. You came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Cleanse me from every stain of flesh and spirit and teach me to achieve perfect holiness in fear of You, that receiving my share of Your sacred things, I may be united to Your Holy Body and Blood and may have You dwell and abide in me with the Father and Your Holy Spirit. Yes, Lord Jesus Christ, my God, may the partaking of Your Most Pure and Life-Giving Mysteries bring me not to condemnation, nor may I partake unworthily of them. Grant that I, even to my final breath, may receive my share of Your sacred things without condemnation and thereby receive communion with the Holy Spirit as a provision for the journey to eternal life and an acceptable defense before Your Dread Judgment Seat. Lord, grant that I, together with all Your elect, may also be a partaker of immaculate good things which You have prepared for those who love You, with whom You abide and are glorified to the ages. Second Prayer — Saint John Chrysostom Lord my God, I know that I am not sufficiently worthy that You should come under the roof of the house of my soul, for it is entirely desolate and fallen in ruin and You cannot find in me a worthy place for Your head. But, as You humbled Yourself from on high for our sake, humble Yourself not to the measure of my lowliness. As You took it upon Yourself in the cave to lie in the manger for dumb animals, so take it upon Yourself now to enter into the manger of my ignorant soul and into my defiled body. Since You did not disdain to enter and eat with sinners in the house of Simon the Leper, so take it upon Yourself to likewise enter also into the house of my humble, leprous and sinful soul. As You did not cast out the harlot, a sinner much like me, who came and touched You, so have compassion on me, a sinner, coming to touch You. Since You did not detest the kiss of her sin-stained and unclean mouth, detest not my mouth, which is stained even worse and more unclean than hers as well as my sordid, unclean and shameless lips, nor my even more unclean tongue. Let the fiery coal of Your Most Pure Body and of Your Precious Blood bring me the sanctification, enlightenment and strengthening of my humble soul and body, a relief from the burden of my many transgressions, protection against every operation of the Devil, an aversion and hindrance of my base and evil habits, a mortification of my passions, an accomplishment of your Commandments, an increase in Your divine Grace and an entrance into Your Kingdom. For I do not come to You, Christ my God, in presumption, but having been given full confidence by Your Ineffable Goodness, I approach, lest I stray far from Your communion and become the prey of the wolf of souls. Therefore, I pray, Master Who alone are Holy; sanctify both my soul and body, my mind and heart and my emotions and affections. Renew me entirely, implant Your Fear in my members and make Your sanctification indelible within me. Be my helper and foundation, govern my life in peace and make me worthy to stand at your right hand with Your saints. Third Prayer – Saint Simeon the Translator Only Pure and Spotless Lord, Jesus Christ, Wisdom of God, Peace and Power: moved by Your ineffable mercy and love for all mankind, You took up our whole nature from the chaste and virginal blood of the one who wondrously conceived You through the coming of the Holy Spirit and by the favor of Your Eternal Father. In that nature you took it upon Yourself to undergo Your life-giving and saving Passion – the cross, the nails, the spear and death itself. Mortify in me the soul-destroying passions of the body. As you despoiled the dominion of Hades in the tomb, bury in me the spirit of evil. You raised fallen Adam through Your life-bearing Resurrection - so raise me for I am immersed in sin and counsel me in the ways of repentance. You made divine the flesh You assumed and honored it on Your Throne at the Right Hand of the Father in Your Glorious Ascension. By the communion of Your Holy Mysteries make me worthy of a place at Your Right Hand with the saved. You made Your sacred disciples precious vessels by the coming of the Comforter, the Spirit – confirm me also to be a receptacle of His Coming. You promised to come again to judge the world in righteousness – grant that I shall go to meet You in the clouds with all Your saints. For You have made and formed me that I may unceasingly praise and chant hymns to You with Your Eternal Father and Your All-Holy, Good and Life-Creating Spirit, now and ever and to the ages of ages. Fourth Prayer – Saint Simeon the Translator Christ my God, as though standing before Your Dread Judgment Seat which does not regard personalities awaiting judgment and rendering an account of the evils I have committed: so today before the day of my condemnation appears, I stand before Your Holy Altar in Your Sight and in the Sight of Your awesome and holy angels. Bowed low by my own conscience, I offer my wicked and lawless actions, triumphing over them by declaring them. Lord, I know my iniquities have increased beyond the number of hairs on my head. The multitude of Your loving kindness is immeasurable and the mercy of Your Goodness and Forbearance beyond description and there is no sin which overcomes Your love for all mankind. Therefore, all marvelous King and merciful Lord, cause Your wondrous mercy to touch even me, a sinner. Fifth Prayer – Saint John of Damascus Lord and Master Jesus Christ our God, You alone have the power to absolve sin. Because You are Good and love all mankind, forgive all my iniquities committed in knowledge or in ignorance. Make me worthy to partake without condemnation of Your divine, glorious, pure and life creating Mysteries, that I may incur neither punishment nor an increase in my sins, but receive cleansing, sanctification, a pledge of the Life and the Kingdom to come, protection, an aid, a turning aside of my adversaries and the blotting out of my many transgressions. Sixth Prayer – Saint Basil the Great Lord, I know that I partake unworthily of Your Pure Body and Your Precious Blood, my Christ and my God. Therefore, be merciful, Lord and do not rebuke me, a sinner, but deal with me according to Your mercy. Amen. Seventh Prayer - Saint Symeon the New Theologian From lips besmirched and heart impure, from unclean tongue and sin stained soul, receive my pleas, my Christ. Neither overlook my words, my way of speech, nor my annoyingly persistent cry. Grant me the boldness to express all the things for which I long, my Christ, and teach me all that it is fitting for me to do and say. More than the harlot have I sinned. When she learned where You were visiting she brought myrrh, boldly came there and anointed Your Feet. As You, Divine Word, did not cast her out when she came in eagerness of heart, detest me not. Ninth Prayer – Saint John of Damascus I stand before the doors of Your temple and I refrain not from evil thoughts. But You, Christ my God, justified the tax collector: You showed mercy to the woman of Canaan and opened the Gates of Paradise to the Thief. Open to me the depths of Your love for all mankind and receive me as I draw near and touch You, even as You did the harlot and the woman with the issue of blood. The latter merely touched the hem of Your garment and immediately received healing and the former, clinging to Your Pure Feet, obtained the release from her sins. But, I in my pitiful state, dare to receive Your Whole Body. May I not be consumed, but receive me even as You received those others and enlighten the feelings of my soul, cleansing my sins; through the prayers of the one who gave You birth without seed and of the heavenly powers, for You are blessed to the ages of ages. I have been put into You, my Mighty Fortress. Sin, Death, and Satan can't crush and hush me for You have overcome these enemies by Your bleeding, dying, third-day rising. I believe this, O Lord, and yet I struggle. There are days I look around and my eyes get the best of me. It can look like Sin, Death, and Satan are in charge. O Lord, I know this is not true. You are Lord over all! Therefore, help me to walk by faith and not by sight. Open the eyes of my heart to see You as my deliverer. I'm helpless to save myself, after all, but I am not hopeless.
