Starcircle, the Irish talent sourcing engine that helps companies scale by accessing pipelines of undiscovered talent, has announced that it will host a new annual global talent conference on 30th September at the Dean Hotel in Cork. Entitled Supernova, the one-day event will bring together talent leaders from some of the world's largest and most innovative companies, including Amazon, Brex, Cisco, and Snap, to address recruitment challenges and set the agenda for the future of talent acquisition. In the face of a growing global talent shortage, topics will centre around the practicalities of sourcing and recruiting from the present talent market. Among the confirmed speakers are Monica Pool Knox, former CHRO at LivePerson; Matt Belitsky, Sales Operations leader at Brex; Tami Floden, Global Talent Acquisition Leader with DoorDash; and Anastasia Flores, Director of Recruiting Enablement at Snap. The guest speakers will join Starcircle CEO, James Galvin; Chief Commercial Officer, Colin Hickey; and Director of Human Resources, Brita O'Connor, to address the strategic and pragmatic ways organisations need to change to survive and thrive in today's and tomorrow's recruitment environment, beset by pains like talent shortages and skills gaps. “We're extremely excited to bring such prestigious thought leaders to Cork,” said James Galvin, Starcircle CEO. He continues, “Tapping into undiscovered talent is Starcircle's North Star and what we see as the future of recruitment. Not only is it essential for improving diversity, equity and inclusion, but it's also a massive piece of the puzzle when it comes to talent and skills shortages. That's why we built our advisory services and tech products around it.” “Our attendee list is a veritable who's who of recruitment, talent, HR, and people heads, directors, chiefs, and presidents from across the globe,” said Galvin. In sharing our perspectives and approaches, we hope to raise awareness of the need for a more strategic, long-term approach to recruitment and innovate new, better practices that are fit for the new world of work.” Attendance at the Supernova event is by invitation only. It has been recognized since antiquity that victory in war often goes to those who best organize "the sinews of war" (money, equipment, and supplies). Yet at the U.S. Army War College the Defense Management course that teaches these topics has often been maligned. For a time, a heavy focus on acronym-heavy process caused many students to roll their eyes and ask, "Why do I have to learn this? I'm not a force manager, or budgeteer, or program manager etc." Tom Galvin and Doug Waters are in the studio to explain how the course is evolving to better demonstrate why everybody needs a little Defense Management in their lives. In one of the final components of the core curriculum, War College students get a healthy dose of the other strategic triad -- force structure, readiness, and modernization. Galvin and Waters join podcast editor Ron Granieri to discuss how this course is changing and why everybody needs to just eat their academic spinach because the students are going to "speak defense management" in their coming assignments.

In times of deep sorrow or joy, humans have always turned to music. Archaeologists have found evidence of instruments among very early civilizations. Spiritual communities have centered on music for centuries. We teach our children their ABCs and how to brush their teeth with songs. We dance out our feelings and cry along with sad tunes. What is it about music that enables it to work so powerfully on our bodies, minds and emotions? That is one of the core animating questions of this conversation with Allison Russell. Russell is a Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter whose debut album, “Outside Child,” was named one of the best albums of 2021 by critics at NPR and The Times.Russell has played in bands including Birds of Chicago and Our Native Daughters, traversing folk, rock 'n' roll, Celtic music, the blues and other genres. But alongside her powerhouse vocals and gorgeous melodies, Russell infuses a deep scholarly curiosity into her songs — not just about the nature and power of music, but also what it can teach listeners about our world.Digging into archives and family history, she explores themes like generational trauma, our relationships to diaspora and migration and how music can build empathic bridges between us in times of deep division. But above all, her songs testify to the sheer human capacity for resilience: our capacity to transcend our darkest times if we hold on, reach out to one another and seek out art that helps console. In this episode, Russell performs four songs with a full band, so listeners can enjoy her infectious art. And then we use those songs as jumping-off points to explore the deeper ideas embedded in her music: why we fall into melodies so soon after our births; how music moves us differently from how books or speeches do; how sound can help regulate our emotions, slow our breathing and rewire our neural networks; how Russell's melodies and vocal performances come together in her mind; why songs can at times be more persuasive than nonfiction; why our unwillingness to divulge painful secrets goes back to the Victorian era; how generational trauma like the Middle Passage connects to personal trauma in the present; how Russell structures her songs to help people transcend profound pain; what message Russell would send to people who are struggling and much more. This episode contains references to sexual abuse.Mentioned:“The Transmogrification of Trauma into Art” by Allison Russell“Barley” by Birds of Chicago“Real Midnight” by Birds of Chicago“Songs of Our Native Daughters” by Our Native Daughters“The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” by Gordon Lightfoot“Take Em Away” by Old Crow Medicine Show“The Art of Disappearance” by Hanif AbdurraqibMusic and Book Recommendations:The Bone People by Keri HulmeA Fortune for Your Disaster by Hanif AbdurraqibBreaking the Thermometer by Leyla McCallaCarry Me Home by Mavis Staples and Levon HelmThis episode was guest hosted by Annie Galvin, the associate producer of “The Ezra Klein Show.” Galvin has covered books and music for almost a decade and hosted a season of “Public Books 101,” a public-scholarship podcast she co-created.Thoughts? Decisive Point – the USAWC Press Podcast Companion Series

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 8, 2022 12:43

Released  8 July 2022. The military profession needs to be redefined by examination of its expertise and jurisdictions of practice, whereas previously the focus was on securing its professional identity. Twenty years ago, the original Future of the Army Profession research project responded to growing concerns among officers that the Army was no longer a profession in light of the post–Cold War drawdown and the onset of global operations including Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, the profession faces recurrent challenges raised by the changing character of war, the renewal of great-power competition, crises surrounding issues of sexual harassment and assault, the effects of a major global pandemic and associated social and political unrest, and the growing societal distrust toward professions in general. Richard Lacquement and Thomas Galvin propose that the questions of professional identity, while still important, are now less salient than those about the professions' jurisdictions of practice and domains of expert knowledge. Clarifying them will help better prepare US military professionals to exercise discretionary judgment effectively. They also propose a new Future of the US Military Profession research effort that addresses these jurisdictions across service, joint, and defense enterprises to clarify the divisions of professional work and responsibilities. This week in the studio a man who in 27 years rose from the rank of the Enlisted to become the Commanding Officer of Foxtrot , 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Marine Special Operations Command. On March 4th, 2007 his career took an unbelievable turn when his convoy was attacked in a complex ambush and his Marines returned fire. This is where this story goes horribly wrong, before even returning to their fire base, word had spread like wildfire, that his unit had attacked and killed numerous civilians including women and children. They became known as the MARSOC 7 and their Court of Inquiry became the longest War Crimes Trial in Marine Corp History at three and half weeks long, and introducing over forty witnesses and 5,000 pages of documentation. As hard as the government tried they could not bring this elite Warrior or the men under his watch and command down. He was victorious in the courtroom with no charges ever being filed on he or his Marines, but was it to much, along his career he was divorced twice and ultimately and unjustly turned down for for further progression in command and rank. He is here to tell the complete story and answer the question was it all worth it. I am honored to introduce you to Maj. Fred Galvin (R) United States Marine Corps

This week we welcome Maj. Fred Galvin (Ret.), Marine Officer and author of A Few Bad Men.  A Few Bad Men tells the story of Fox Company, a Marine unit ambushed in Afghanistan and betrayed by their own leaders—these elite Marines fought for their lives again, back home.  A cross between A Few Good Men and American Sniper, this is the true story of an elite Marine special operations unit bombed by an IED and shot at during an Afghanistan ambush. The Marine Commandos were falsely accused of gunning down innocent Afghan civilians following the ambush. The unit's leader, Maj. Fred Galvin, was summarily relieved of duty and his unit was booted from the combat zone. They were condemned by everyone, from the Afghan president to American generals. When Fox Company returned to America, Galvin and his captain were the targets of the first Court of Inquiry in the Marines in fifty years.  Maj.  Galvin demonstrated what it means to be a real leader, and fought for the lives and reputations of his Marines.  Strap yourself in for a story fit for Hollywood, but lived by Maj. Galvin and the men of Fox Company.Bulletproof Veteran Podcast is raising money for the HunterSeven Foundation, supporting their mission of researching the impacts of toxic exposure on our countries military.  Helps us by purchasing any of Bulletproof Veteran's apparel, now available at https://amzn.to/3BA3dx9.  All proceeds raised through the end of July will be donated to the HunterSeven Foundation.

On this podcast, Rad welcomes Maj. Fred Galvin who served as commanding officer of the first unit that MARSOC deployed to combat in Afghanistan. He is the author of A Few Bad Men and he shares the chilling story of being ambushed by a car bomb and being framed for war crimes they did not commit. He recounts how they were unwanted guests to their command and the underlying selfish philosophies of his commanders. The media storm that followed the attack got them booted out of Afghanistan and even back home, despite being exonerated by the court of inquiry, they were publicly shamed for supposedly getting away with murder. Fred is fighting back and letting the people know how the military is abusing its power and letting others take the fall for their mistakes. A few years later, he commissioned as a Marine officer and served with elite infantry, reconnaissance, and force reconnaissance units. In early 2007, Maj. Shortly after deploying, Galvin and his men found themselves in an ambush along Highway 1 in Bati Kot. Before they had even returned to their base, accusations of killing civilians rocketed through the media. Galvin was removed from command and faced a Court of Inquiry, the first for the Marines in 65 years.
