Red Stitch Actors' Theatre presents the Australian premiere of Anna X, a razor-sharp, high-octane satire inspired by the true story of infamous socialite-con artist Anna Delvey. Today, the team chats with actor Becca Galvin who plays the lead role. Anna X was a hit at the West End, and is now on at the Red Stitch theatre, Chapel St, St Kilda until 21 June. The post Becca Galvin – May 31st, 2026 appeared first on Sunday Arts Magazine.
As we approach the halfway point of the season, the boys break down all the latest and greatest (and not so great) from around the comp. The Dragons are finally off the mark! But was it a great Dragons performance or poor Broncos performance that got them home? And what's happening at the Dogs? Who should shoulder the blame for their ruff form? Big questions surround the Brisbane Broncos as the panel debates whether their premiership window has officially closed after another shaky showing. Kieran Foran joins the show live in his new role as Manly head coach, giving insight into the transition and what’s next at Brookvale. Meanwhile, Braith Anasta throws his support behind Lachlan Galvin, while the big Origin debate heats up — is it Mitchell Moses or Ethan Strange in the Blues No.6 jersey?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Australian's Andrew Webster joins Adam Hawse to celebrate the Dragons first win in 295 days. What does it mean for coach Dean Young, and what of the Brisbane Broncos? The premiers were also sitting at 5 wins and 7 losses at the same time last year. Also, the players have spoken! A RLPA survey shows 84 per cent of leading players believe referees are having an increased impact on results and most fear they are more vulnerable to injury in the modern game. Naughty Mal Meninga has been caught courting a couple of Bulldogs, and the Galvin booing goes on. For all your NRL news, follow the Continuous Call Team wherever you get your podcasts. Plus, if Peter V'Landys can land a 4 billion dollar broadcast deal, it's going to be hard for club bosses to push back on his tilt for executive chairmanship. If the great mind Phil 'Gus' Gould can't comment on the Ponga tackle, what is the point of having on the channel 9 panel? On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with percussionist and educator Shawn Galvin for a wide-ranging conversation about orchestral life, teaching, and the deeper thinking behind great musicianship. I first learned about Shawn through my son Skyler, who studied with him at LSU, so this conversation felt especially meaningful for me.We begin by talking about Shawn's approach to teaching and how he balances technique with musicality. His philosophy is simple but powerful: musical intent should always lead the way. Instead of practicing technique in isolation, Shawn encourages students to pursue musical ideas first—and then let the technical work follow to serve those ideas. From there, we dig into orchestral percussion itself, how the role of percussionists continues to evolve, and how skills like drum set playing have increasingly become part of the orchestral vocabulary. Shawn shares fascinating insights into audition repertoire, why certain excerpts appear on audition lists, and how percussionists today must be prepared for a wider range of musical demands than ever before. We also spend time on Shawn's own musical lineage. Growing up in western Pennsylvania with a father who was both his band director and percussion teacher gave him an early immersion in music education. Later, studying with legendary Pittsburgh Symphony timpanist Stanley Leonard became a foundational experience that shaped the way he thinks about sound, tone production, and the role of percussion in the orchestra. One of my favorite parts of this conversation is hearing Shawn talk about timpani as a gateway into orchestral thinking. Because timpani sits inside the harmonic and structural core of so much orchestral repertoire, studying it opens a deeper understanding of how orchestras actually function musically. That perspective carries into everything from bass drum sound production to phrasing inside the orchestra. We also explore the many dimensions of Shawn's career—from his years performing with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to his work with the North Carolina Symphony, his teaching at LSU, and his leadership role with the Spoleto Festival Orchestra, where he helps audition and mentor the next generation of orchestral musicians. This is a thoughtful conversation about musicianship, mentorship, and the long arc of a life spent in music.Key TakeawaysMusicality should lead technique — technical work becomes more meaningful when it serves a clear musical idea.Orchestral percussion continues to evolve — drum set and broader stylistic fluency are now part of many orchestral expectations.Studying timpani deepens understanding of the orchestra — it connects percussionists directly to the harmonic and structural core of the repertoire.Great teachers shape more than musicians — the process of learning music develops discipline, listening, and collaboration skills that transfer far beyond music.Mentorship matters — Shawn's studies with Stanley Leonard helped shape his musical thinking and approach to teaching.Professional musicianship requires adaptability — orchestral players must be ready for a wide range of tempos, conductors, and interpretations.Music careers can take many forms — performing, teaching, and arts leadership can all intersect in meaningful ways.Music from the EpisodeQueen - Molly Joyce (Shawn Galvin, percussion)Five Gestures - Brett William Dietz (Shawn Galvin, snare drum & LSU Hamiruge Percussion Ensemble - Dr. Brett Dietz, conductor)Letter from Home - Pat Metheny Group (Shawn Galvin, vibraphone)About the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast hosted by Brad Williams, featuring conversations with musicians, composers, producers, and creative thinkers about their musical journeys. Have you ever wondered what really goes on in our country's criminal courts? Many want to believe in the hallowed halls of justice, with ethical and equitable legal processes that pursue truth and enforce the law fairly. But one author argues that this perception hides the reality that the system is broken. Emily Galvin Almanza, also a former public defender, presents her latest work The Price of Mercy: Unfair Trials, a Violent System, and a Public Defender's Search for Justice in America. The text takes us behind closed doors of America's criminal courts, arguing that the institutions that claim to protect us are doing the exact opposite. Examples include data showing that jails actually increase future crime, police corruption in overtime pay, an example of a man incarcerated for decades because scientists mistook dog hair for his own, incentives that push prosecutors to seek convictions, and even how judges may decide cases differently after lunch. Almanza presents examples and offers a blueprint for fixing these issues at their core, and by engaging the general public in helping to shape our collective future. Emily Galvin Almanza is the co-founder and executive director of Partners for Justice, a nonprofit creating a new collaborative model of public defense designed to empower defenders nationwide. Prior to founding PFJ, Emily fought for clients inside the L.A. County Public Defender's Office, the Santa Clara County Public Defender's Office, and the Bronx Defenders, and with the Stanford Three Strikes Project. Her writing has appeared in The Atlantic, The Washington Post, Newsweek, Teen Vogue, and Time, among other publications. Michele E. Storms is the Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington (ACLU of Washington), former Deputy Director of the ACLU of Washington, and previous Assistant Dean for Public Service and executive director of the William H. Gates Public Service Law program at the University of Washington School of Law. Preceding those roles, she served as a statewide advocacy coordinator first at Columbia Legal Services and later at the Northwest Justice Project. She was also previously on faculty at the University of Washington School of Law where she founded what is now the Child and Youth Advocacy Clinic and taught several other courses.

Is your organization ready for the shift from simple AI tools to fully autonomous agents? In this episode, we dive deep into the world of agentic AI and why it represents the next major inflection point for compliance and risk management. Matt Galvin, a partner at Steptoe and former Department of Justice counsel, joins the show to discuss the promise and peril of these new systems. Unlike standard models that simply provide answers, agentic AI moves into the realm of performing services autonomously, from booking flights to managing customer refunds. This shift introduces significant governance challenges, including what Matt describes as an accountability crisis and a credibility crisis. We explore the ethical implications of bots making hyper-logical cost-benefit decisions that may clash with corporate culture. The conversation also covers the transition from buying generic software to building bespoke internal systems, and how different generations of professionals can adapt to this rapidly changing landscape. Matt provides actionable advice on how to audit your external spend and leverage AI to drive higher ROI in your compliance and legal programs. Send us Fan MailIn this episode we go to one of our favourite places in Dublin, Hodges Figgis bookshop in Dawson Street, to interview Cathy Galvin on the occasion of the launch of her collection of poems from Bloodaxe, Ethnology, A Love Song for Connemara. We also meet and hear poet John F. Deane, who spoke about Cathy's book and read some of his own recently published Carcanet collection, Jonah and Me, a Poetry Society Recommendation. from Bloodaxe: Ethnology draws on the mystical cry for the dead of Cathy Galvin's Irish-speaking ancestors. Within an epic narrative she reclaims place, people and language, creating a bridge between our own times and a Connemara community on the margins of Europe. Drawing on classic forms within literary and oral traditions, Ethnology becomes a love song for Connemara, witness to vivid encounters: between the living and the dead and between the poets, folklorists and ethnologists who have written about the West of Ireland for their own agendas. In her first full-length book of poetry, fragility and strength are finely balanced, focused on the ruins of an island cottage built by her great-grandfather. Here, Cathy Galvin locates humour and joy as well as mourning. The poems give a vivid, original voice to the tradition of keening, of honouring the loss of those we love.from CarcanetJohn F. Deane's new book follows the publication of his career-spanning New and Selected Poems, which was published on the occasion of his eightieth birthday in 2023 and shows no relaxation in his descriptive and lyric powers.Ireland's foremost living religious poet, the new book includes a sequence, 'Of Human Flesh', which takes Easter's rituals as its occasion, and dwells on its continuing purchase and meaning as the poet remembers others and walks a landscape where, sometimes, as he puts it, the spiritual and material worlds come together:'all here fits together, oxbow and pillow-stone, holon and fractal, stunning, admonishing, this morphogenic field.'This episode is supported by a Project Award from the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon. As a public defender in California and New York, Emily Galvin Almanza became frustrated by an overburdened justice system focused on locking people up while having, she says, “essentially zero impact on the crime rate.” Time and again, she saw ordinary peoples' lives upended by the court system. So she co-founded an organization, Partners for Justice, aimed at supporting and empowering public defenders. Now operating in more than 20 states, the group places advocates in public defenders' offices to help clients find stable housing, employment and other services . . . and stay out of jail. In her new book, The Price of Mercy: Unfair Trials, a Violent System, and a Public Defender's Search for Justice in America, Galvin Almanza draws on these first-hand experiences and the latest crime data to argue that institutional decisions, such as prosecutorial incentives, policing tactics, or even when a judge has lunch, can have disastrous impacts on people who find themselves in the judicial process. She looks at how police overtime practices affect justice, how jail conditions can increase future crime, and how flawed forensic technology has resulted in the incarceration of innocent individuals. Despite these sobering facts, she also emphasizes solutions: such as how public defenders enhance community stability and health, and how small environmental investments, such as planting trees, can actually reduce crime rates. Join Emily Galvin Almanza to hear her blueprint for transforming our criminal justice system. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Amid a legal battle with the recorders office, there’s still a big celebration on the way with Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. We talked to Supervisor Thomas Galvin about both topics.
Hello! Today, we have a big episode with two parts. First is an interview about a new book by Emily Galvin Almanza, a former public defender in California who has worked with nonprofits the Stanford Three Strikes Project and the Bronx Defenders. More recently, she is the co-founder and executive director of Partners for Justice, a nonprofit creating a new collaborative model of public defense. Her new book The Price of Mercy is finally out and she stopped by to talk about the criminal justice system and a recent op-ed she wrote about free buses in New York City. In the second half, we welcomes Bharat Ramamurti, the former deputy director of the National Economic Council of the United States under the Biden Administration and a recent college graduate and thinker named Anuraag Routray about a recent paper they wrote about how to fix the sports betting industry without going full narc on everyone. "We are still dealing with a system which tolerates rampant abuse of accused people." — Emily Galvin AlmanzaBack in April 2024, we interviewed Thelton Henderson, one of the first African American federal judges in America. What disturbed me about our conversation was that even though Henderson grew up in the late Jim Crow era, he didn't seem to think that America is a profoundly more just place now than it was back then. Today's guest clerked for Judge Henderson, and her new book suggests he's right.Emily Galvin Almanza is a public defender turned activist, and The Price of Mercy is her data-driven indictment of a criminal justice system that, as she puts it, "tolerates rampant abuse of accused people, tolerates the blatantly racist application of the law, and tolerates a total lack of transparency." According to Almanza, the numbers are damning: 80% of cases are misdemeanors. 80% of people prosecuted are poor enough to need a public defender. 70% of people in jail haven't been convicted—they just can't afford bail. California's gang database was 99% people of color, she says, and famously included literal babies listed as having "admitted their gang affiliation."And here's both the good and bad news: crime is actually down. If you're under 50, she notes, you're living through the safest period of your lifetime. The solutions aren't mysterious either—housing reduces arrest rates by 80%, after-school programs cut youth violent crime in half. That's all good news for us. But it remains bad for those being unjustifiably prosecuted. We just lack the political will to implement what works. And as Galvin Almanza points out, this isn't a federal issue: 87% of prisoners are in jail on state charges. Change happens at the local level—DAs, sheriffs, state legislatures. The fixes, she says, are realizable. We just need the collective political will. That's the price of mercy in America today.About the GuestEmily Galvin Almanza is Executive Director of Partners for Justice and teaches at Stanford Law School. A former public defender, she clerked for Judge Thelton Henderson. Her new book is The Price of Mercy: Unfair Trials, a Violent System, and a Public Defender's Search for Justice in America (2026).ReferencesPeople mentioned:● Thelton Henderson was one of the first African American federal judges in America, a civil rights pioneer for whom Galvin Almanza clerked.● Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow, blurbed the book. Galvin Almanza agrees "without hesitation" that we're living in a new Jim Crow system.● Alec Karakatsanis coined the term "copaganda" for media narratives that undermine smarter criminal justice solutions.● Clara Shortridge Foltz was a 19th-century lawyer who coined the phrase "free and equal justice" and pioneered the public defender system.● Andrew Ferguson of GW University appeared on the show recently with a book warning about surveillance.Key statistics from the book:● 80% of cases in the system are misdemeanors—trespassing, driving without a license, fare evasion.● 80% of people prosecuted are poor enough to be assigned a public defender.● 70% of people in jail haven't been convicted—they're awaiting trial and can't afford bail.● 87% of prisoners are there on state charges, not federal—making this a local issue.● Every year of incarceration shaves two years off a person's expected lifespan.● Being incarcerated cuts a person's expected lifetime earnings in half.● Giving an unhoused person housing reduces their chances of future arrest by 80%.● After-school programs can reduce youth involvement in violent crime by 50%.Concepts discussed:● Cash bail is a $2 billion per year industry in America. Most civilized countries don't allow you to buy your freedom back from the government.● "Failure to protect" laws criminalize women who are present while an abusive partner also abuses their child—charging victims as perpetrators.● Self-defense laws were "designed with two men fighting in an alley in mind"—making them nearly useless for abused women who fight back.● Gang databases in California were 99% people of color and included babies listed as having "admitted their gang affiliation."About Keen On AmericaNobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. How does prosecutorial impunity threaten the foundation of American justice? Emily Galvin Almanza, author of The Price of Mercy, exposes the dangerous truth behind a legal system in crisis — where prosecutors often go unpunished for misconduct, and the rules meant to hold the powerful accountable are being ignored. This eye-opening conversation reveals how the unchecked power of prosecutors and the politicization of justice jeopardize everything from high-profile hearings to everyday law enforcement, creating a justice system that favors impunity over fairness. Author Emily Galvin Almanza is a public defender and legal expert dedicated to reforming the American justice system, known for her groundbreaking work on wrongful convictions and systemic abuse.
