Ronnie James Dio joining Black Sabbath really gave the band a shot in the arm. After declining returns with Ozzy in the late 70s, Ronnie's emergence as a singer and a songwriter helped push 1980's Heaven and Hell to platinum status in the US. The band and record company were eager to recapture the magic of Heaven and Hell but founding drummer Bill Ward had to replaced by American drummer Vinnie Appice, who stayed available during the Heaven and Hell Tour just in case Bill wasn't able to play. They loved the success of Heaven and Hell so much, it seems, that they tracked Mob Rules very similarly to H&H. They come charging out of the gate with Turn Up the Night (as opposed to Neon Knights), they go back tp doom Sabbath with the Sign of the Southern Cross (not dissimilar to Children of the Sea) and end with the epic title track (E5150, or in Latin EVIL, is really the intro to Mob Rules in our book). But it's all great Sabbath thanks to the soaring vocals of Ronnie James Dio, the groovy bass lines of Geezer Butler and some extraordinary work by The Riff-Master - Tonny Iommi. It fit perfectly with the H&H material and maybe Tony got some inspiration from the young lads in Iron Maiden as producer Martin Birch had just worked on Maiden's sophomore release Killers. The second side might not be as strong but the urgency and spectacular groove of Falling Off the Edge of the World galloping along to Ronnie's powerful and emotional vocals make it all time great Sabbath track. Though they would put this lineup back together for Dehumanizer in 1992 and again as Heaven and Hell in the 2000s, this would prove to be their only release during their heyday. The follow up live album Live Evil showed what an incredible lineup this was and it's sad to think it ended for cliched reasons but that's rock n roll. Today's guest really didn't have a choice in what he did. Rock and roll chose him. Please welcome Dizzy Reed to the podcast. You may know him best as the keyboardist and second longest tenured member of Guns N' Roses but that's not the beginning (or end) of his story. From learning to play organ from his grandmother to his first gig playing Smoke On The Water on an unusual instrument, all the way to meeting GNR and releasing two solo albums and everything in between, Dizzy has some of the best stories I've heard. He talks about perfecting the after-party and being a part of The Dead Daisies and Hookers & Blow to play some of his favorite covers. On this episode of Talking Guitars on Johnny Beane TV, we read a fascinating story about Ritchie Blackmore, Deep Purple, and one of the most unexpected influences behind the band's 1984 reunion. Blackmore recently reunited with Deep Purple onstage for the first time in 33 years, joining his former bandmates at New York's Jones Beach Theater for “Smoke on the Water.” It was an incredible moment for a guitarist who had spent decades away from the band he co-founded. But Blackmore's first Deep Purple reunion in 1984 had a surprising connection to another legendary group — The Police. After leaving Deep Purple in 1975 to form Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio, Blackmore eventually saw an opportunity to bring the classic Mark II lineup back together. And according to Blackmore himself, part of the reason was what he felt was missing from the rock scene at the time. Speaking to Metal Hammer in 1987, Blackmore bluntly explained: “Everyone was playing like the Police. And can I state here that I hate the Police?” The timing is fascinating. The Police were at the height of their success following their massive 1983 album Synchronicity, while Blackmore felt there was a gap in rock music for something heavier, rawer, and more aggressive. As he put it, “There just wasn't a band playing that earthy kind of rock.” Blackmore believed Deep Purple could fill that void with their hard-driving, blues-based sound — music he felt didn't have the polished sheen dominating much of the rock world. And he was right. In 1984, the classic Mark II lineup returned with Perfect Strangers, giving Deep Purple a remarkable second chapter. Blackmore remained with the band until 1993, when he left again. Now, more than three decades later, seeing him back onstage with Deep Purple makes this story even more fascinating. Kevin Williams from ‘Tis the Soundtrack joins me to talk about Rainbow “Snowman!” Yes, the former Deep Purple guitarist took Howard Blake's song from the 1982 classic and reworked it as an atmospheric synth and electric guitar anthem!Rainbow was formed in 1975 by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore after he began to tire of Deep Purple and the band's changing musical direction. Deep Purple had already replaced Ian Gillan and Roger Glover with David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, but Blackmore remained unhappy with where the music was headed. What began as Blackmore recording a single with members of the band Elf ultimately grew into a full album and the creation of Rainbow. The band quickly became known for its larger-than-life live shows, whose centerpiece was a massive computer-controlled rainbow containing some 3,000 lightbulbs and stretching 40 feet across the stage. Rainbow also became notorious for its revolving door of musicians, with original vocalist Ronnie James Dio departing in 1978 over disagreements about the band's increasingly commercial musical direction. After further lineup changes, Joe Lynn Turner eventually took over as lead singer, ushering in Rainbow's more radio-friendly early-'80s era. That lineup would lead to Bent Out of Shape, released September 9, 1983, which featured the song in question as the album's ninth track.Rainbow's instrumental “Snowman,” featured on their 1983 album Bent Out of Shape, is based on “Walking in the Air,” the haunting theme written by composer Howard Blake for the beloved 1982 animated film The Snowman, itself adapted from Raymond Briggs' 1978 children's book. Blake had actually composed the melody around 1970 before later adapting it for the television special, where it became the musical centerpiece of the story. The Snowman—which went on to become a seasonal television favorite in Britain and Finland—follows the fleeting adventure of a young boy and the snowman he brings to life. During their magical flight to the North Pole, “Walking in the Air” accompanies the pair as they soar through the night before attending a gathering of snowmen and meeting Santa Claus and his reindeer. In the original film, the song was performed by St. Paul's Cathedral choirboy Peter Auty, whose recording was later reissued in 1985 and 1987. Ritchie Blackmore was captivated by the composition's haunting, melodic beauty and, having long enjoyed adapting classical and traditional melodies into rock instrumentals, transformed Blake's delicate vocal theme into “Snowman.” Rainbow's version builds atmospheric tension around the familiar melody before giving Blackmore the opportunity to let loose with a soaring, emotional electric-guitar lead—turning one of animation's most delicate Christmas themes into a distinctly Rainbow instrumental.Synth flute? Antes de este, sacaron el directo “On Stage”, que si aún no lo habéis escuchado, ¡corre que se acaba el mundo! Rainbow, para los que no los conozcáis, fue una banda fundamental en la historia del rock. Muchas de las bandas de la New Wave of British Heavy Metal, como Iron Maiden, Diamond Head, Saxon o Judas Priest, se inspiraron en ellos. Podríamos decir que Rainbow es como un puente entre Deep Purple y Led Zeppelin con el NWBHM. Y ahora, ¡vamos a por este “Long Live Rock'n'Roll”! Grabado en 1977 en un castillo convertido en estudio en Francia y publicado en 1978 bajo el sello Polydor, este disco llevó a Rainbow al Top 10 británico, convirtiéndose en uno de los discos clave del heavy metal de finales de los 70. Aunque creemos que Rainbow no necesita muchas presentaciones entre vosotros, antes de empezar con el podcast, os hacemos un resumen rapidito de su historia desde sus inicios hasta la grabación de este disco que os traemos hoy.
