Motaz is a Palestinian photojournalist and humanitarian storyteller who became one of the most recognized voices documenting life under siege in Gaza. With his camera as his witness, Motaz risked everything to shed light on the brutal realities faced by his people sharing unfiltered stories, haunting images, and raw truths that the world could no longer ignore. Born and raised in Gaza, Motaz began his field work at a young age, driven by a deep sense of duty and resistance. From surviving airstrikes to capturing moments of both tragedy and resilience, his work has gone viral, turning him into a symbol of courage and civilian journalism in the face of overwhelming danger. In this powerful and emotional episode, Motaz opens up like never before. We talk about the price of fame, the emotional toll of witnessing repeated massacres, his departure from Gaza, struggles with PTSD, social media censorship, and what it means to carry the responsibility of telling a nation's story. He also speaks on faith, hope, trauma, the hypocrisy of global powers, and whether peace is even possible. This isn't just an episode about war. It's about dignity, conviction, and legacy. As a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist for the last 25 years at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, David Carson knows what makes an excellent photograph. But so does AI. Carson is on leave from the paper as a 2025 John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University, and he's spent much of the past year studying the collision of AI and photojournalism. Carson shares his insights on the challenges, complications and possible solutions for a world where, increasingly, what you see is different from what you get – and why he sees purported AI "learning" as just another word for theft.

Despite ongoing peace talks, fighting continues in parts of DR Congo between local forces and Rwanda-backed M23 rebels. The M23 has taken control of much of the eastern part of DR Congo since January – its first major advance being the capture of Goma in North Kivu province. Award-winning photojournalist Hugh Kinsella Cunningham has been documenting these takeovers as well as their impact on civilians. Speaking on FRANCE 24's Perspective programme, he described how civilians were ordered by the rebels to leave displacement camps and return to their villages, which had been ravaged by fighting.

An Iranian filmmaker who has been documenting the life of a woman in Gaza for her film that has been accepted for the Cannes Film Festival has told FRANCE 24 how she continues to send her messages, even though she knows she was killed in an Israeli air strike. Sepideh Farsi had been following the life of Fatma Hassona, but a week and a half ago, the day after they heard the film had been selected for Cannes, Hassona was killed, along with nine members of her family. The director of "Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk" spoke to us in Perspective.

Jun Fujita is the Japanese-American photographer behind some of the most recognizable photographs taken in Chicago in the 20th century, including his shots of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre of 1929, the Eastland passenger boat disaster of 1915, and the 1919 Chicago race riots. Fujita was also a published poet and something of a regional celebrity, known for socializing with William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway. Fujita's foreign identity also made him the subject of government inquiry and suspicion on multiple occasions — during both World War I and World War II — according to Graham Lee, Fujita's great-nephew and the author of a new Fujita biography, “Jun Fujita: Behind the Camera.” After Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, Fujita's assets were frozen, his business was shuttered, his cameras were taken away, and he constrained himself to Chicago to avoid possible internment, Lee said. How did Fujita navigate this perilous time for an immigrant in Chicago? We sat down with Lee to discuss how Fujita, a “supremely confident person,” came to rely on both the support of his community and his wits.
Consuelo Kanaga was one of the first women to be hired as a staff photojournalist for a major American newspaper. She used her camera to document social issues such as racial injustice, urban poverty, and labor rights, particularly in Black communities. However, the The Brooklyn Museum – which owns the most extensive collection of her photographs – argues her work is still overlooked. A new exhibition, “Consuelo Kanaga: Catch the Spirit,” sheds light on Kanaga's legacy. Co-curators Pauline Vermare and Drew Sawyer discuss the show, on view at the Brooklyn Museum through August 3.

Barbara Davidson, a Pulitzer and Emmy Award-winning photographer, joins Paris on The Paris Chong Show. Davidson discusses her project for *The Globe and Mail*, where she traveled from Los Angeles to New York, documenting swing states and aiming to capture quintessential American scenes. She highlights her photo from Coldwater, Michigan, showing a woman in a hijab at a fair, reflecting the area's large Yemeni community and illustrating a "modern America". Davidson also talks about her journey to becoming an American citizen, and the challenge of maintaining excellence in her work. Her three-week road trip took her to various locations where she observed the local economies and health infrastructures. She shares how she photographed victims of violence in Los Angeles, which led to her Pulitzer Prize and that this work came from a place of pain and healing, and how she transitioned to video, winning her an Emmy. Davidson's upcoming show at Leica alongside Joel Meyerowitz will showcase a more artistic style, while also maintaining her social awareness. She sees herself as a "visual humanitarian," dedicated to telling people's stories. She is currently working on stories about senior evictions in Los Angeles, and the English/French tensions in Montreal. Davidson also reflects on how Instagram has changed photography, noting concerns about authenticity. Follow Colin on InstagramColin's Work At Block Club Chicago Want to donate to our non-profit newsroom? CLICK HEREWho we areBlock Club Chicago is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization dedicated to delivering reliable, relevant and nonpartisan coverage of Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

In this special edition of Art World Horror Stories, Asheville-based photographer Michael Freas shares the harrowing tale of Hurricane Helene's destruction, which left hundreds of local artists without studios or income. Having survived multiple hurricanes, Michael offers a unique perspective on the resilience required to rebuild after such catastrophes. Federico Rios Escobar has spent more than a decade documenting the epic struggles of migrants in South and Central America. The hardships they face in the roadless jungle known as the Darien Gap go beyond anything he's seen before. “There's only one way to cross and it's on foot,” he says. “There's the mud, rain, humidity, the hot sun, rivers that suddenly grow, landslides — and many migrants have died of these things — but many are also victims of robberies, assaults, extortion, and sexual assaults.” For migrants, he says, the Red Cross volunteers there offer more than first-aid, they offer a sense of hope, safety and humanity to people in desperate conditions. Tune in to find out where you can see his award-winning, heart-breaking and inspiring photographs.

From the tranq dope crisis in Philadelphia to voodoo in Benin, Belgian photojournalist Gaël Turine speaks to Eve Jackson on arts24 about his award-winning work. Over the past 25 years, his photographs have been widely exhibited throughout Europe and the world. He's also regularly published in the international press. Gaël Turine has taken some startling and uncomfortable photos in a series being shown in the south of France at the Visa Pour L'image photojournalism festival, entitled "The Ravages of Tranq Dope". The photos are taken in Philadelphia – the ground zero for a new and dangerous sedative called "tranq". A side effect of this drug can be struggling to stand upright, which is why users are commonly described in the media as "zombies". Gaël Turine also has a parallel exhibition called "The Spirits of the Forest" about the voodoo religion in Benin at the Gacilly photo festival in Brittany.

We Ukrainian storytellers were never in the position that we chose to become war photographers. I keep saying I'm not a war photographer. I'm photographing war because this is what's happening in my country. I have zero wish to photograph any other wars. I'm doing this because this is my war. That's the only accurate skill I have.” Become a full tier 1 member here to access exclusive additional subscriber-only content and the full archive of previous episodes for £5 per month. For the tier 2 archive-only membership, to access the full library of past episodes for £3 per month, go here.

The first photographs of a major military conflict were taken during the Crimean War of the 1850s. Nearly 175 years later, photojournalists are on the ground, on the frontlines of conflicts around the world, documenting history. They do so at great risk to themselves. So far, at least five photojournalists have died during the Israel-Hamas War, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists."You see the spirit of human beings when everything else is stripped away," says photojournalist Lynsey Addario. "That's what drives me to keep going back. At the end of the day, people can be horrible, but they can also be extraordinary and wonderful."We discuss how photojournalists in conflict zones do their work and the impact of witnessing the atrocities of war first-hand.Want to support 1A?
