For Season 4 we'll be releasing "Side Dish" episodes every Thursday. These will be shorter in length and will feature guests that have helped make the No Dishes podcast what it is. For our Side Dish we wanted to take the opportunity to introduce our new producer, Garrett Poortinga with Green Hat Media. Garrett is a Bloomington local who also happens to love to eat out. Join us as we go over how we joined No Dishes, what it's been like up until this point, and his favorite dish at My Thai. My Thai wife may need a residency card to live here after Brexit - nobody really knows - and part of the application process is the provision of biometric data, but what a palaver, and a waste of time!
“My Thai-ness or sense of Thai identity is not up for anyone else to quantify based on how white I seem.” Tricia Heuring talks about being "racially ambiguous" and "automatically American." She shares her culture shock from arriving in the US at 18 having learned about her own American culture largely through television and American cultural items she had access to growing up in Egypt, Thailand, and Saudi Arabia. And Tricia shares how her lived experiences have given her a unique perspective as a curator and community organizer. Tricia Heuring is a curator, arts organizer, and educator living in Minneapolis. A mixed-race, multi-cultural American, she was born in Thailand and spent formidable years in Hawaii, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. While setting down roots in the Twin Cities over the past 15 + years, she’s instigated various platforms for cultural production and creative communities. Since finding her forte in visual art, she has become an advocate for curatorial practices that re-frame the role of the gatekeeper to instead, facilitate equity and inclusivity in the art world. She practices this philosophy at Public Functionary, a Northeast Minneapolis based alternative art space she co-founded in 2012. Public Functionary has been called “a fantastic gift to a great art city” by New York Magazine’s senior art critic, Jerry Saltz and “a beacon of hope for the local indie art scene” by the Star Tribune. Heuring holds a B.A from Macalester College and an M.A. from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. She currently teaches arts leaders as an adjunct in the arts management graduate program at St. Mary’s. Heuring serves on board of the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council and was recognized with a “40 under 40” award from the Twin Cities Business Journal.
Koz and Goldie are back with an all-new episode of BurghLife FM! We start off talking about the Deflateriots...sorry, PATRIOTS winning Super Bowl XLIX, then get into all sorts of funny topics, including: Did Katy Perry lip sync some of her halftime performance? * Goldie's obsession with Lenny Kravitz * Remember when snow days/cancellations actually required snow? Not any more * Koz and Goldie return to My Thai for more delicious cuisine (and outstanding service!) * Childbirth and all of the fun that accompanies it * The great breast feeding debate * Fifth grade girls handing out phone sex chat lines at recess * and more!
If yinz missed us half as much as we missed you, then this has to be the best relationship EVER. We're back for 2015 with a brand new show, chock full of goodness for your ears -- including some kick-ass new music from Pittsburgh band The Delaneys! Other topics include: Delicious Pad Thai from My Thai restaurant in Dormont * Koz and Goldie quiz each other on some hilarious Urban Dictionary definitions (such as "food press," "work hot," and more!) * If Miri were an electronic scale * Pet peeves, like people who don't say "God bless you" after you sneeze, wearing socks with sandals, turn signals that NEVER stop, talking during movies in the theater, etc. * the epic movie Office Space...which we apparently saw in the theater (though Koz can't remember -- no surprise there) * and more!
