"Operation School Bell" provides new clothing of school uniforms which most local elementary schools require. They put together packages each week of hygiene kits since no toiletries are covered by welfare programs. They also work with HERO (Homeless Education Resource Office) helping homeless school kids in Nashville. They've also worked to get washers and dryers into area schools since many families don't have access to laundry facilities. It's that time of year when everyone is a little nicer, a little happier, and a little more generous. We have several charities and good causes to highlight in this episode, but they tend to operate year round so if you can help out during the rest of the year, that goes a long way.St Jude's https://www.stjude.org/ Forever14 https://forever14.org/Veteran's Guesthouse https://www.veteransguesthouse.org/Human Society https://nevadahumanesociety.org/VFW https://www.vfw.org/Ronald McDonald House https://rmhcnnevada.org/Food Bank https://fbnn.org/Assistance League https://www.assistanceleague.org/reno-sparks/Toys for Tots https://secure.toysfortots.org/
Now in its eleventh year, GivingTuesday is a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity amid the traditional post-Thanksgiving frenzy of consumer deals and sales. Many nonprofit organizations have lined up matching funds for donations that come in on Tuesday, Nov. 28, so it's an ideal time to support the causes that are important to you. Local organizations like the Hillsboro Schools Foundation, Centro Cultural, Adelante Mujeres, Bienestar, the Oregon Food Bank, Community Action Organization, Latino Network, Boys & Girls Club, Assistance League, Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center, Hillsboro Elks, Hillsboro Optimists, and many others work tirelessly to support HSD students and families, as well as others in need in our community. Please consider a donation to one or more of them this Tuesday and beyond. Are you giving your time rather than your money? Don't forget to submit those hours if your employer has a program for contributing to the nonprofit organizations where you volunteer. Intel employees are reminded to log their 2023 volunteer hours into Benevity by Friday, Dec. 15 to double the impact. Thank you!
In this episode of the Planned Solutions Incorporated Podcast, The US Treasury is becoming a larger and larger focus of Wall Street as the US Government has been borrowing very large amounts from the private sector. With the current large federal deficit, the need to roll over short-term borrowing, higher interest rate costs, and reduced lending from foreign entities have caused the US Government to borrow more and more from the domestic markets. This creates a risk that there will be too little debt available to fund the private sector. Also, When an employee leaves their employer, they often have the option to keep their money invested in the employer's retirement plan. However, employees with small balances may be “forced out” of the plan by having their money transferred to an IRA. The definition of a small balance will be increasing from $5,000 currently to $7,000 in 2024 making it so the “force out” may impact more employees in the future. Plus, Credit cards can be a valuable tool for processing payments while earning rewards. However, the negative side of credit cards comes when balances accumulate and are rolled over from month to month resulting in high-interest charges. Therefore, it is important to have a plan to limit the impact of credit card debt as quickly as possible. This includes finding the reason the debt accumulated in the first place and taking action to reduce the likelihood that it will continue. Plus a look at the Planned Solutions Incorporated Office Bulletin Board - Chase and Daryl recently attended the Financial Planning Association of Northern California's Fall Symposium. The event was held at California State University, Sacramento in an effort to engage with students working toward a degree in Financial Planning. Planned Solutions sponsored a golf tournament supporting the Assistance League of Sacramento. The Sacramento Chapter is one of 120 Assistance League chapters nationwide in which volunteers work to improve their local communities. Nuestra Palabra: 2023 ALMAAHH & MFA Studio Artists Spotlight! Tony Diaz will be interviewing a few artists and spotlight them on their artistic work as part of the 2023 ALMAAHH & MFAH community! Viri Ramos was introduced to painting at an early age by her mother who was a classically trained oil painter. Growing up they would often work along side each other. Upon graduating college, she made the move from Monterrey, México to Houston, Texas. It was during her time living on her own that she discovered acrylics, which were better suited for her not so well ventilated studio apartment. She found in acrylics the best match for her laid back relaxed aesthetic and personality. Her paintings are filled with life and fun. They are happy and playful.. at times serious, but mostly not at all. She favors rough strokes and bold colors. Dr. John DeWitt is our chiropractor and the man behind the website he calls concussion video where you can learn all about his latest research into head trauma and head injuries. During the show we also discussed some supplements he's developing which are specifically targeted for brain health. If you know of somebody that has a concussion they'll definitely want to listen to this show with Dr. John Dewitt. Concussions are a subject that hits close to home with Dr. Dewitt because as a former professional football player, he's had a few of them himself. What I learned in this show about concussions is that you don't have to be hit in the head hard at all. Some soccer players get concussions from simply heading the ball on their forehead. If you can imagine a simple fall on the floor or even some whiplash from a car accident, these seemingly small injuries can cause a concussion. The other thing I learned about concussions is that they're not just bruises on the brain. I always thought that a concussion was just a bruise on your brain. But a concussion can also be where brain matter that connects your brain to your spine and skull get damaged or even torn. So a concussion is much more than a lesion or bruise on your brain. It could be other tissue that gets damaged during the initial injury. This makes me worried for all UFC fighters, boxers and football players. I didn't know that cheerleaders and hockey players are very prone to getting head injuries and concussions. If you know of anybody with traumatic head injuries and you think they might have a concussion, please send them this show so they can get some help! They'll appreciate it! Thanks. We love talking about philanthropy and how individuals and families can incorporate charitable giving into their estate plans. As we’ve mentioned previously on the Wealth & Law Podcast, there are numerous ways that individuals and families can give to charity besides simply writing a check. One great way to give to charities is by setting up a donor advised fund. We bring on Erin K. MacDonald this week to talk all about donor advised funds. We get into what a donor advised fund is, how to set one up, the differences between a donor advised fund and a private foundation, how donor advised funds can fit in with an individual’s estate plan, and what possible changes the future may bring to donor advised funds. Erin is a partner in the Trusts and Estates Department of Karnopp Petersen. She regularly counsels clients in the areas of estate planning, probate and trust administration, tax planning, and charitable giving. Erin believes that building a good relationship with her clients is essential in order to address the needs of her clients, their families, and their futures. Erin is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), and a Member of the Executive Committee of the Oregon State Bar's Estate Planning and Administration Section. She is a Member of the Oregon State Bar's Estate Planning and Elder Law Sections, Central Oregon Estate Planning Council, Oregon Women Lawyers, Cascade Women Lawyers, and Deschutes County Bar Association. Erin actively participates in the local community as a board member of the Central Oregon Community College Foundation and the Laboratory for the American Conversation at OSU Cascades. She is also an Advisory Board member of the Central Oregon Estate Planning Counsel, U.S. Bank's Central and Eastern Oregon Region, and Assistance League of Bend. You can find Erin on Twitter @erinkmacdonald and can learn more about her work at https://karnopp.com/team/macdonald-erin-k/.
Diane and the crew talk about Tom's trip to Pebble Beach with his dad, and Danielle talks about a really great idea to have client picnics in the park! Everything from the dishes to the lace, Diva sets up wonderful picnics for others. It's really great and will work with menu options for breakfast or lunch. They discuss candy and cravings for sweets in general, and how nobody understands how Danielle can only have one! It's not typical, and we find out who has a complete lack of control, who is a literal candy thief, and compare stories. Tom Ross with Bay Equity Home Loans talks about the need to talk to an expert before making assumptions about this market, and talks about how people get excited about the "home" part of the process (and understandably so) but wait, or don't prepare in advance with the lending portion of the process. Diane explores TikTok videos that were noteworthy, including kids who pronounce words in intentionally strange ways, how to remove a stump, and Chief talks about his kids' discovery of polyamory videos and why he and Tom both don't let their kids watch. "Diva" talks about a volunteer opportunity at The Assistance League of Phoenix. She also talks about a fun thing to do at Comedy night Joe Rogan. This week was going to be a difficult one, for Prince Harry and his brother William. August 31st marked the 23rd anniversary of the tragic death of their mother. Princess Diana’s funeral service took place on September 6th, 1997 at Westminster Abbey before she was laid to rest at her family estate Althorp, in Northamptonshire. Since then Prince Harry and now Meghan have frequently honoured his mother’s memory with flowers. It was only really after her death that her fondness for the humble forget-me -not flower emerged. In 2006 Harry and his friend launched their charity Sentebale. Sentebale means 'Forget-me-not'.In 2017, 20 years after Diana's death, forget-me-nots were included in the memorial flower garden for Princess Diana, the so called White Garden, in London. At the May 2018 marriage between Meghan and Harry, Meghan’s wedding bouquet of spring blooms included forget-me-nots.On Mother’s Day, 2019, Harry and Meghan released a photo on their Instagram account showing baby Archie’s feet against a backdrop of the flowers. So we see forget-me-not flowers linking Prince Harry and his family, to his mom. This past Monday, August 31st, Harry continued to honour his mother during an outing to the Assistance League of Los Angeles, when he and Meghan rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty, helping preschoolers replant the Preschool Learning Centre’s garden. Harry and Meghan planted a mixture of vegetables and flowers and are said to have taken along a packet of forget-me-not seeds to include in the mix. Assistance League Los Angeles is one of approximately 120 chapters of this American non-profit, with each chapter dedicated to providing accessibility and fulfillment of community needs at the local level. Assistance League was established in 1919 by Anne Banning forming the Assistance League of Southern California. Her vision was to provide services to all in need, regardless of their race, religion or culture. Her vision laid the foundation for the future of the organization. The Preschool Learning Centre in Los Angeles, is but one of many programs on offer through this chapter.Again, thanks to Meghan and Harry, I have learned about another organization doing amazing work in the communities across America. Without this organization and the many others across the US and across the world doing similar work, there would be a lot more children having a little less hope in their lives.Princess Diana then, and now through her sons and their wives, in their dedication to their work and in their kind spirits, need never worry about being forgotten.

"Whatever our New Normal will be, we will be there for our families." - Carrie SlavinMost of us have had to significantly readjust our lives due to stay-at-home and social distancing mandates, that has given many of us increased opportunities to spend time with our families - eating meals together, playing board games, and otherwise getting to know each other better. But for families that are struggling due to the economic downturn, buying food and household supplies is a major concern during these times. These families have had to make sacrifices, sometimes being forced to choose between buying much needed food and buying cleaning and disinfectant supplies to stay healthy. This week host Bruce Bracken talks to Theresa Roberts and Carrie Slavin, President and Former President of The Assistance League of Seattle. After seeing that families needed supplies other than food and clothing, Theresa and Carrie set out a program to assist families to receive basic hygiene and cleaning supplies. By engaging other families in their local community, The Assistance League of Seattle was able to create 325 family-to-family care packages.Join us in the next episode to as we listen in on how families are helping families in the Seattle area.ResourcesWebsite for The Assistance League of SeattleSeattle Times ArticleBruce Bracken - LinkedIn See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
