The Hollywood Theater in Dormont is back in business, temporarily. Developer Brian Mendelssohn is in the preview phase of a more than $1 million renovation of the oddly shaped, weirdly designed one-screen space, and he's just getting started. We joined him on Potomac Avenue to talk about what he learned from opening Row House in Lawrenceville, how the South Hills community has contributed to his dreams for the Hollywood, and all the fun treats he's got in mind for its basement, including private spaces for karaoke, gaming, smaller film screenings, and more. Meet graphic designer Paul Haggerty. His moody aesthetic and vintage vibe can be seen locally on T-shirts, stickers and pins. “I try to imagine what that would be like if the 70s never ended,”  Haggerty explains. You might have recently seen his “we'll make it together” designs for sale at Workshop PGH. When asked what it is like seeing his work out in the world, Haggerty admits to being overly excited and even sometimes snapping a secret photo. “It's cool that it resonated with somebody enough to buy it. It's a big deal for somebody to spend money on your stuff.” Growing up, Haggerty watched his parents handle merch and posters for his dad's band. From there, a notable career day field trip to an ad agency helped him realize that he wanted to be a graphic designer -- even if no one around him quite understood what that meant. In this episode, Haggerty shares some of his many “pandemic projects,” what inspires him and his dream project. Plus, what's the one thing you should know this week? It's the much-anticipated opening of the Tal and Bert Mercantile in Dormont.    Links in this episode:   Paul Haggerty on Instagram Paul Haggerty on Threadless Paul Haggerty Designs   Tal & Bert housewares

Welcome to Episode 17! In this episode, Chris, Lisa and Tim are joined by special quest Kelly Hughes, Founder and Executive Director of Foster Love Project. Located in Dormont, Foster Love Project's mission is to "provide love in action to kids in foster care as well as support to the families who are providing care for them" -- and they do a tremendous job! Sometimes foster families only have a few moments to welcome the arrival of a new foster child into their home. Kelly and her husband have fostered 8 kids and know how challenging that can be for everyone. Kelly started Foster Love Project as a way to make sure kids moving into foster care are given the essentials they need to feel as loved, valued, and safe as possible (think toothbrush, pajamas, stuffed animal, etc.) To date, Foster Love Project has provided 12,000 "placement bags" to kids entering foster care in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Illinois. Foster Love Project's work doesn't end there. From operating a donation center where kids in foster care can shop for free, to providing guidance and support for families caring for foster kids, its work continues to grow! Foster Love Project is dedicated to helping foster kids, but they can't do it without volunteers. Please consider helping them out!For more information about volunteering with Foster Love Project and a host of other organizations, go to https://www.justserve.org/ (type in your zip code to find service opportunities near you)!

How ingredients are sourced, and who benefits from growing them. Knowing what the people who make the spirits think, what matters to them, and how they participate in the making. We are a self-taught collaborativeWe are anchored in the roots of tradition and yet each inspired by unique cultural impulses. We embrace the scientific method, even as we collect artistic perspectives to blend with the distilling process. As a group, we're driven to tinker and test. We are pushed to re-think the creative process the way disruptive musicians, chefs and painters do. We experiment with ingredients and how they're sourced, with distilling techniques, with ways of finishing—always informed by hard-won knowledge. The members of our team have experienced so many things—searched for oil, designed buildings, cooked over campfires, served in the military, created art, played rock and roll. All these experiences lead us in our exploration of spirits. Our talented team of rebels have a clear cause – to make the best spirits that purposefully break from convention in order to create something new, or even curious. We are all collected at Treaty Oak because our founder believes in the creative yield of eclectic experiences. We're here because of the question “what if …?”The people of Treaty Oak believe in everything that got us here. But more importantly, we believe all of that is enough to help us create the next great spirit.~treatyoakdistilling.com--Music by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

That’s how it’s supposed to be when we serve others, but let’s be honest: most times we expect gratitude or at least a return favor. Jesus modeled something different. Motivated by love, he served flawlessly. Join us for two weeks as we learn to serve as he did—with no strings attached.

This week we take a short detour from our usual review-centric episodes and interview Cinematographer, Producer, and an all around great friend, Ryan Haggerty of Haggerty Media.  Ryan will be discussing a new film premiering on June 1st called "Blood on the Leaves" that he has been involved with as well as his insights on the trials and tribulations that indie filmmakers go through to bring projects to life. Ryan Haggerty Interview- Key Points We quite literally did have the worst slum lord of all time Ryan and I lived in the worst basement apartment while we were in grad school.  Complete with burst steam pipe, a giant hole in our laundry room, and fruit flies. "Dirt Grubs" do exist. Working together as a team yields better results Filmmaking by itself is a collaborative art.  Working with others and retaining their input, along with revisions, yields only a stronger film in the end. Everything starts with a great story  You have to have the best possible story to convince people to invest in your project. Fundraising relies on more than just creating a kickstater or indiegogo.  You need to personally reach out to people through emails, phone calls, networking events, etc. Problems will occur down the line but it is important not to get bent out of shape and lose focus. Create an LLC for your film.  It not only gives your film a professional feel to it, but it also makes accounting your funds and budgeting easier. Write your story for what you have. If you have access to free locations, props, costumes, etc. write those into your story from the beginning.  It will save you cash once production starts. Distribution and marketing are a pain but are necessary Look at starting with local small theaters/coffeehouses in the area your project was filmed at to tap into the community that helped make the film possible. Some theaters will allow you to rent outright or do a 50/50 split of the ticket sales. For larger distribution, it still serves to talk to sales agents and distributors, although there is a lot you can still do on your own. Regardless of your distribution strategy, marketing ties everything together and ultimately is responsible for getting people to your screening. Notable Movies Referenced           If you are in the Pittsburgh area, be sure to check out the premiere of Blood on the Leaves at the Hollywood Theater in Dormont on June 1st.  Tickets can be purchased online at ShowClix Find more info about Ryan Haggerty and Blood on the Leaves: Haggerty Media- Facebook - Twitter @haggertymedia Blood on the Leaves botlmovie.com Twitter @BOTLmovie Facebook- BOTLmovie Instagram- BOTLmovie Check out the trailer below!!
