Send us a textI am delighted to welcome this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, Carol Riddick. We were introduced to Carol on The Soul Train Cruise, where she was one of performers ranging from Soul Train TV show stars like Shalimar, to contemporary favorites like Carol. We enjoyed it so much that we booked for 2026. If you listened to our reflections of the cruise a few weeks ago on Ep 165 The Soul Train Cruise I think it would be clear the person that ‘stole the show' for us was Carol Riddick. The thing is, unlike the dozens of old school performers on the cruise, we weren't familiar with Carol when we boarded! Carol Riddick, an artist who has graced stages across the globe winning fans and admirers alike with her extraordinary voice and presence. Highly regarded in the music community for her vocal dexterity, mesmerizing performances and genuinely warm personality, Carol is a unique entertainer whose evolution is ongoing. She has blessed the tracks of many distinguished artists and is featured on records by Anthony Hamilton, Musiq (Soulchild), Jill Scott, Will Downing, Norman Brown, Jeff Bradshaw, and a host of others. Most recently she can be heard on Eric Bellinger's 2022 Grammy nominated album on the track “Shine on the World”. After partnering with Axis Music Group, a former Philadelphia-based production company, Carol started an independent label “CriddickNotes” and creatively spearheaded the creation and release of her debut CD, “Moments Like This”. She also co-wrote, produced, and sang “Nuances”, the intro to Philly's WDAS FM 105.3's “Quiet Storm” program which can be heard weeknights and most recently tapped into her communications background as she hosted her own radio show titled “Love & Life with Carol Riddick” on WURD Radio, the only African-American owned talk radio station in Pennsylvania (and one of only three remaining in the country). In addition to her recording efforts, Carol lends her impressive vocals to other artists, like Philadelphia's Queen, Patti LaBelle and Jazz great, Gerald Veasley, but most notably, her live performance with R&B crooner, Will Downing of the riveting duet “Nothing Has Ever Felt Like This,” is sure to tRelying on ship wifi is slow, unsecure, sometimes not available & at foreign ports travelers don't want to pay their carriers' high fees. The Attorney Post - If you don't know your rights, you don't have any!
Visit https://TheLockeLawGroup.com or call 210.361.3113 In a recent episode of "The Attorney Post" podcast, we had an enlightening conversation with Shannon Locke, a seasoned criminal defense attorney whose unique journey from prosecutor to defender has given him valuable insights into the legal realm. This post highlights key aspects of our discussion, including Locke's law firm, his career transition, and his thoughts on the criminal justice system. Locke Law Group: Quality Legal Representation Locke introduced us to his law firm, The Locke Law Group, known for providing exceptional criminal and family law representation. The firm's commitment to personalized service, regardless of clients' budgets, sets them apart. Locke's team focuses on guiding clients away from probation, deferred adjudication, or prison, ensuring each case receives the attention it deserves. In family law matters, Locke's wife lends her expertise and personalized attention to every case. From Corporate Dissatisfaction to Legal Excellence Locke's journey from the corporate world to law was driven by a desire for more meaningful work. He clerked at the Pima County Attorney's Office, where he discovered his passion for trial work. This newfound interest led him to San Antonio, where he joined the Bexar County District Attorney's Office before transitioning to criminal defense. Salman Rushdie: A Literary Inspiration Our conversation took an unexpected turn when Locke and host Justin West discussed their shared admiration for author Salman Rushdie. Locke expressed deep respect for Rushdie's fearless approach to confronting religious fanaticism through his fiction. They even exchanged book recommendations, including "Shalimar the Clown." Board Certification in Criminal Law Locke emphasized the significance of board certification in criminal law, having achieved it himself. He detailed the rigorous process and its importance in recognizing specialization and expertise. Learning from Setbacks One highlight was Locke's reflection on legal setbacks. He shared an experience where a client chose another attorney who secured a dismissal, revealing the distinctions between prosecutors and defense attorneys. Locke stressed the importance of adaptability in the defense role, recognizing that not every plan unfolds as expected. Balancing Emotions and Justice Throughout our discussion, Locke provided insights into the emotional challenges faced by criminal defense attorneys. He raised concerns about the efficiency and scale of the U.S. prison system, questioning alternative methods of incapacitation without imprisonment. Advocating for Clients and Embracing Challenges Locke recounted cases where he proved clients' innocence, resulting in dismissals. He also discussed the emotional weight carried by defense attorneys and the frustration when advocating for clients in the face of seemingly harsh judgments. A Unique Law School Journey Locke's unconventional law school experience, where he embraced practical activities over academic grades, was a pivotal factor in his success. Questioning the Conspiracy Law The podcast touched upon the controversial conspiracy law, highlighting concerns about its lack of protections and potential for injustice. Locke and West explored the idea of removing this law from federal statutes to address these concerns. In conclusion, Shannon Locke's appearance on "The Attorney Post" podcast provided invaluable insights into the multifaceted world of criminal defense law. His transition from prosecutor to defender, dedication to personalized representation, and critical perspectives on the legal system offer essential takeaways for legal professionals and the general public. Locke's journey serves as a roadmap toward a more equitable and compassionate legal landscape. https://maps.app.goo.gl/hurQ1G7KKhsNs6Cx7 Sponsors: https://RankWith.news Https://TheAttorneyPost.com/grove https://nationalerc.org

Some of the most encouraging news we hear has roots in tragedy. This week, Carter McNeese and his wife, Audrey, were awaiting their possessions to be delivered to their new home in Shalimar, Florida when the phone rang. And, Williamstown, Missouri is a small town with a population of only 60 souls. There only one church left in the small community and on January 4, Pastor James Leezer of Providence Church received the call no one wants – the church and the parsonage are on fire.

Davina and Miriam discuss the moment in her life when her father was diagnosed with lung cancer, a moment that is central to her book. She and her husband were living with her parents at the time, and while she continued to be very involved in her father's care, she chose to move out of the house in his final months, one of several moves that would take her away from suburban London and deeper into the British countryside. Together they explore what life might have looked like had she stayed living there, along the way examining the ebb and flow of grief, the unexpected impact of wartime trauma and the resilience we can find in the most challenging times.Davina Quinlivan is a Lecturer in the Department of English and Creative Writing at The University of Exeter. She taught at Kingston School of Art for over a decade and regularly leads the ‘F: For Flânerie' film and literature seminar series at The Freud Museum. She lives in a rural hamlet on the outskirts of Exeter with her family. Her new book Shalimar: A Story of Place and Migration is published by Little Toller and has been co-published in audio by Spiracle Audiobooks. She is currently working on a book about rivers and migration, mothers and daughters, as a loose follow-up to Shalimar. This week we delve into the pits of self loathing and discuss our top 10 fall favourites. Well, sort of. We discuss Dan's expensive taste in autumn perfume, James's definitive taste in autumn perfume, Fliss's very pleasant taste in Autumn perfume and Ben's awful taste in perfume generally. We also discuss whether or not Le Lion bears a passing resemblance to Hulk Hogan or Shalimar, or both and whether or not one should place their feet upon the hearth in mid-winter. You can contact us via email at lesoderants@gmail.com or via Instagram: Dan: fragrance_weirdo James: houdini_sotd Ben: talking_scents Fliss: fliss_sniffs_stuff During the show we may mention perfumes that were sent to us for review. We will, at all times, be completely transparent about this when it is the case and I hope you'll come to trust us enough to see that whatever the method of acquisition, we will always speak our own minds about said perfume and/or house.

Hilde Soliani, the Queen of Gourmands, demonstrates her incredible versatility with Peccatrice and 24.09.11, two fragrances that exist beyond the gourmand frame. Our Education Manager's personal favourites, Peccatrice is a sinful yet clever composition defined by cedarwood. Raspy yet yieldingly moreish, cedar supports a simple and effective arrangement of black pepper for sizzling spice, olive for contrast, and fennel for a refined spicy green touch. Peccatrice is a wood quite forward in its disposition. In contrast, the sacred 24.09.11 is a bubble of protection, a scented guardian angel made up of calamus, myrrh, incense, and amber notes. In dedication to her father, 24.09.11 is an intensely personal fragrance of affecting beauty, and for us, reimagines the classic amber category defined by Shalimar. Considering the two scents together, we have the corporeal and the immaterial, temptation and salvation. The Hilde Soliani range is available at our boutique and online store. Say It Skillfully® is a show that helps you to benefit from Molly Tschang's expert guidance on the best possible ways to speak your mind at work in a positive and productive manner. Episode 96 is the 16th monthly feature of “Our Voices,” intended to accelerate social change, level the playing field and help everyone live to their full potential. This may present a very different experience of... growing up, going to school, struggling, working and living; Molly hopes you'll better appreciate and embrace our differences, so that we're stronger for them! Her friend and special guest, Shalimar Adorno grew up knowing that she had to be great in life. It is remarkable that she saw “endless possibility”... Would you have seen if this had been you…? Born to a 17-year old mother in the South Bronx, Shalimar recounts not knowing where their next meal would come from, and not being able to safely play outside. She speaks fondly of 18 months living in Puerto Rico, where she could ride her unicycle outside, and food could always be found. Despite growing up in poverty, she highlights the richness of family ties and necessity of fearlessness and hope, and how her parents moved them always in search of a different beginning for a better life. Education was paramount—her mother sold her food stamps to enable Shalimar to go to a private school, knowing this was to be her lifeline. She talks about pivotal people without whom pivotal doors wouldn't have opened, a dark decade after her brother was brutally killed and how she came to peace with it. Shalimar shares how she went from Spanish major and cohesive Hispanic community at Penn State to investment banking, and found her way to a life-changing role at the World Bank. She implores, “vulnerability is courage” and “bring your own folding chair when there isn't a seat at the table.” Don't miss this story of heart, grit and resilience—from a life not knowing abundance to the deepest appreciation of it. Tune in and be inspired to know no boundaries and for ways to take action so that all can be safe, seen and heard, and our true and best selves. Molly's thought for the week: Strength isn't about how much you can handle before you break. It's about how much you can endure after you've been broken (unknown, adapted from Robert Tew)
Girlfriend, let's talk - Shalimar J In this episode, Shalimar J reflects back on the catalyst behind Girl Embrace It TV. As it happens with any journey toward reinvention and growth, Shalimar found her spark of inspiration to pay it forward during one of her lowest points in life. Shalimar explains how, at the same time she was going through her own dark path, she was seen as the voice of reason among her peers and, therefore, was the go-to-person for advice. Shalimar's most common refrain for these struggling ladies? “Embrace it. Girl, I get it, but embrace it.” There came a point where Shalimar realized that God was leading her to create a platform and a brand where her message can reach more audiences far and wide. Listen in as Shalimar goes on to share on how, as a result of following His guidance, Girl Embrace It TV came to be. She then describes how her faith carried her through an abusive marriage and her attempts to make ends meet while taking care of her children after her divorce. As she explains, it all led to her outreach geared toward survivors of domestic abuse, My Scars Are Beautiful; They Are My Testimony, as well as many other initiatives going forward. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn: ● 03:11 The birth of Girl Embrace It TV ● 05:28 Navigating an abusive marriage ● 09:50 Shalimar's temptation at her church ● 14:52 Struggling to take care of her children after the divorce ● 18:56 The birth of Shalimar's outreach, My Scars Are Beautiful; They Are My Testimony ● 20:48 Shalimar's other initiatives ● 22:33 The power of a testimony ● 27:59 Why healing is so difficult ● 29:42 How to get in touch with Shalimar ● 34:02 Shalimar's upcoming projects Key Quotes by Shalimar: ● We don't wake ourselves. He does the waking. ● Never make anyone else's sin be your sin. ● We can get so high and mighty, when God has done the good thing, we don't even hear Him anymore. We hear Him when we're low, and He knows that, but we need to be able to hear him at all times. ● A testimony is a powerful thing and testimonies help heal. ● The hardest part of getting over your it is the starting point of getting through it. ● Be confident in God's plan for you, and He'll do the rest.
