What if the key to unlocking humanity's full potential lies in embracing the unique perspectives and contributions of those who have been overlooked or undervalued throughout history? Stacy Spikes' journey as an outsider in the tech industry is a testament to the power of resilience and determination. Recognizing that he did not fit the conventional image of a successful tech entrepreneur, he fearlessly confronted the barriers before him, driven by a desire to break down not only the mold but also the glass ceiling that loomed above. His experience navigating the intricacies of the tech world provided invaluable lessons about the challenges of being an outsider. But instead of viewing it as a hindrance, Stacy discovered that his unique position granted him a distinct advantage. By embracing his outsider perspective, he saw the untapped opportunities and unexplored niches that others may have overlooked.  Joining us on today's episode of The Greatness Machine, Stacy talks about his book, Black Founder: The Hidden Power of Being an Outsider, where readers are taken on a powerful and transformative journey that combines an inspiring memoir with a candid exploration of the challenges faced by a trailblazing business leader.  In this episode, Darius and Stacy discuss Stacy's entrepreneurial journey, including his experiences with MoviePass and his motivation to start Urbanworld Film Festival. Kyra Jones grew up in Annapolis, Maryland, a small city know for its crabs, boats, and being where Kunta Kinte was sold into slavery. You can extrapolate as to how an upbringing in such a location contributed to her hatred of white supremacy and her love of seafood. Kyra is a 2nd-generation West Indian American and spent most of her life talking shit over curry chicken with her Trinidadian family members. After high school, Kyra left the east coast for the Windy City to study acting at Northwestern University, where she was one of only 4 Black theatre majors out of her class of 100. (Seriously. There were more Black people in her house than there were in her graduating class). While attending the predominantly white institution, she became frustrated by the amount of old, dead, white, male playwrights she had to study and perform. Then a professor in the Gender Studies department told her the definition of “intersectional feminism” and gave her some Angela Davis, and it was all downhill from there. Kyra became heavily involved in student advocacy, activism, and peer education around racial and gender justice, much to the theatre department's chagrin. She graduated from NU with a bachelor's degree in Theatre and Gender Studies. Kyra is currently a staff writer on season 2 of Woke (Hulu) and Queens (ABC). Kyra is the co-creator and star of the award-winning web series The Right Swipe (OTV). The Right Swipe was an official selection at Austin Film Festival, Urbanworld Film Festival, DC Black Film Festival, Black Femme Supremacy Film Festival, and many others. Her comedy script, Good Vibes Only, won Best Pilot at the 2020 Nashville Film Festival and was runner-up for Cinestory. Her upcoming feature, Go to the Body, won ‘The Pitch' at the 2020 Chicago International Film Festival and Screencraft's virtual pitch competition. As an actor, she's appeared on the series finale of Empire (Fox), Chicago Justice (NBC), The Chi (Showtime), Kappa Force (Revry), and Seeds (OTV). https://www.instagram.com/kyra.a.jones https://twitter.com/BlkAssFeminist Connect with your host Kaia Alexander: https://entertainmentbusinessleague.com/ https://twitter.com/thisiskaia  Produced by Stuart W. Lawrence E. Adjah is a Community Builder and Host serving at the nexus of Business, Faith, and Community Wellness.   Lawrence builds communities and hosts conversations that unite, heal and transform lives. Lawrence serves as the Founder and Chairman of the Family Dinner Foundation whose mission is to connect the world as a family at and beyond the dinner table. Beginning with its first initiative, Our Family Dinner in 2008, which reached nearly 50K young professionals around the world, its work has expanded to empowering an ecosystem of initiatives dedicated to connecting brothers and sisters as a family beyond the dinner table.  In a time where many of us are mediating our lives behind a computer screen and are living in cities without strong pre-existing relationships, Lawrence became burdened by the sleeping giant of our time: loneliness.  Observing that we've become more digitally connected than we've ever been, yet more isolated and disconnected interpersonally than ever before, it became his mission to address this growing issue. He believes that we were never meant to do life alone and that it is vital for people to have a space where they can build lifelong, life-sustaining relationships.  Through his experience in business and community building, he became convinced the solution to this challenge is as much a spiritual matter as it is a civic, social, and technological opportunity. He pursued formal theological education and training and became an ordained Pastor and spiritual counselor who brings this foundation into every aspect of his approach to community building, business and life.  Lawrence currently hosts two shows, Watch God Work, a show featuring leaders from all arenas of business, entertainment, civic leadership and culture sharing their “God Stories” and A2D (Agree2Disagree) a weekly conversation that intentionally tackles the “the challenging conversations” in our community we are having or need to have in our families, friendships and/or romantic relationships.  Lawrence began his career as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company in its New York office, helping to serve some of the world's largest professional sports organizations and media companies. Prior to joining McKinsey, he was a nationally ranked track and field competitor through college, where he entered as a National Champion & HS All-American.  After McKinsey, Lawrence served as the Senior Director of Business Development at a premiere sports and entertainment marketing agency in New York.  Lawrence has served as a trusted Executive Advisor and Counselor to business leaders, from C-suite executives to solo lead small business owners, with nearly 15 years of experience through his firm, Adjah.  He's also a licensed and ordained Pastor, a Prepare + Enrich Certified Marriage Counselor, and Spiritual Coach & Trainer, who also leads the world's first gospel-based spiritual gym, Foundation JC. Lawrence serves as an Advisory Board Member and Former President of the Board of Directors for The Harvard Black Alumni Society (HBAS). Lawrence also serves on the Board of Directors for the Urbanworld Film Festival and the national Board of New City Kids. He's also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc.  Lawrence holds a B.A., from Harvard University, an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business, an M.Ed from The University of Texas at Austin with distinction and a Masters of Divinity (M.Div) from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bemoretoday/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bemoretoday/support

LisaRaye McCoy-Misick was born September 23, 1967 in Chicago, Illinois. She is of African American and Native American descent and is proud of her heritage. She later attended Eastern Illinois University but she never really took the idea of a career in acting seriously until persuaded by an insistent roommate to attend a local audition in Chicago. Her screen debut was in the low-budget action movie Reasons (1996), she received numerous critical kudos despite the fact that the film went largely unseen. LisaRaye is known for possessing a charmingly seductive smile and a distinctively vibrant but laid-back personality. She first caught the eye of television viewers with an appearance on the popular television series In the House (1995). Though the movie never did find a distributor, director Monty Ross convinced the budding young actress to move out to L.A. during pilot season, and she soon landed minor roles on such shows as Martin (1992) and In the House (1995). She also made an appearance in rapper Tupac Shakur's final music video, her memorable appearance caught the eye of rapper/actor Ice Cube, which led to her being in the movie The Players Club (1998). Her memorable performance as a troubled stripper left a solid impression on audiences. Her appearances thus far were impressive, but LisaRaye's career truly began to ignite after her appearance in the movie The Wood (1999). In 2000, LisaRaye found her widest audience yet as the host of Source: All Access (2002), a popular series dedicated to exploring hip-hop culture. She quickly gained a loyal following with her winning smile and extensive knowledge of all things hip-hop. As film roles continued to roll in, she came across her biggest role to date in the 2002 film Civil Brand (2002). A harrowing look into life in women's prison, the film took home top awards at both the American Black Film Festival and The Urbanworld Film Festival. Soon following her little sister Da Brat into a career in music, LisaRaye next began collaborating with Benzino to record a song to be featured in the film Redemption (2004). 2003 proved an equally lucrative year for LisaRaye as she prepared for the release of the Barry Levinson comedy Envy (2004), the female-driven Western Guns and Roses (2000), and her new sitcom, All of Us (2003) which was ran from 2003-2007.

Hosts Paul Booth and Kai Lovell will review the film WAIKIKI, premiered at The Urbanworld Film Festival sponsored by HBO. THE FILM Waikiki is written and directed by a Kanaka Māoli (Native Hawaiian).   “The Hawaiʻi of my childhood is a world far different than the glossy misrepresentation presented in Hollywood film. The repercussions of colonialism and Statehood have left people severed from ancestral land and culture. This has had a profound effect on Hawaiian psychology and self-image. Filmmaking has been my means to process these realities” said writer-director Kahunahana. Leaving behind the touristic image of paradise and island culture, WAIKIKI tackles the often-unspeakable generational trauma of postcolonial cultures through a mixing of genre conventions, experimental storytelling, and perspectives.  When a Native Hawaiian hula dancer escaping her abusive boyfriend crashes her beat-up van into a mysterious homeless man, she finds herself flung into a surrealistic journey of self-exploration and enlightenment. Director Christopher Kahunahana's eagerly awaited feature debut breaks down the enduring, stereotypical image of paradise we have of Waikiki to reveal a vulnerable and authentic portrait of indigeneity.

Blitz the Ambassador and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his new film The Burial of Kojo, African film making and story telling, magic and allegory, paradox, guilt, genetic memory and truthful moments. Trailer Streaming on Netflix, March 31st. Synopsis Through a magical realist lens, The Burial of Kojo follows the story of Esi, as she recounts her childhood and the tumultuous relationship between her father, Kojo and her uncle, Kwabena. Directed by TED fellow, music composer and musician Blitz Bazawule, the film chronicles the tale of two brothers through the gifted eyes of a young girl who transports the audience to the beautiful lands of Ghana and other worlds that exist between life and death.Born from a newspaper article and a Kickstarter campaign, Bazawule skillfully captures the beauty of a family, even when the circumstances aren't beautiful. The Burial of Kojo is an essential human story of courage and survival. The Burial of Kojo is a 2019 Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) Official Selection and 2018 Urbanworld Film Festival Best Narrative Feature Winner.A Note from the Director:It all began with a newspaper article I read while visiting family in Ghana two years ago. The text was bold and direct…."Galamsey Miners Buried Alive.” That headline stopped me dead in my tracks. For those unfamiliar with Galamsey, it's a local term for illegal gold mining, an extremely dangerous practice with little financial reward and irreversible environmental consequences. I became obsessed with understanding why young men and women risked their lives 30 feet underground, only to be paid a fraction of what the gold was worth. I visited the mining towns of Tarkwa and Prestea to do some research. The more I dug, the more apparent it became who really controlled the illegal gold mining industry in Ghana. Chinese companies assisted by local Chiefs really run the show, operating in the shadows while young local miners suffered all the risks and backlash. I knew immediately this was a story worth telling. However, I didn't want to focus on the obvious theme of victimization. I wanted to craft a narrative that was personal and intimate, giving the audience a glimpse into a Ghanaian family dealing with love, loss, tragedy, betrayal and sibling rivalry.Biography Blitz Bazawule is a Filmmaker and Musician born in Ghana and based in New York. Blitz's short films Native Sun and Diasporadical Trilogìa premiered at New Voices in Black Cinema and Blackstar Film Festival respectively. Blitz is also the founder of Africa Film Society, an organization focused on the preservation of classic African films. As a composer and musician, Blitz has released 4 studio albums, Stereotype, Native Sun, Afropolitan Dreams and Diasporadical. Blitz's feature directorial debut 'The Burial Of Kojo' premiered at Urbanworld Film Festival presented by HBO. Blitz is a TED Fellow and recipient of the Vilcek Prize. Wow, listeners! Since there’s so much going on in the world of Film/TV, the Critic and the Referee have a lot to discuss (and keep up with). In this episode, they give you their takes on what they’ve seen, so far, at the New York Film Festival. (The festival’s public screenings begin Friday, September 30.) They also give you the highlights from the Urbanworld Film Festival, which just ended. But that’s not all. Two major films are in wide release Friday, so they just had to review them. The first film review is of “Deepwater Horizon,” which stars Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, and Kate Hudson. The second is of “Queen of Katwe,” which screened at Urbanworld and stars Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo. (“Queen of Katwe” is already in limited release in selected cities.) But, even that isn’t all. What about Fall TV? New TV shows get the Why Watch That treatment. Plus, of course, there are a “Did You Know?” and a “Pick of the Week” that you don’t want to miss. Dig in! Saddi Khali is one of the most cutting edge photographers in the black community. His talents take him traveling all over the USA and across the globe to places like South Africa. His art breaks boundaries while at the same time redefining what we see as self love. His photography makes looking in the mirror a far more pleasurable experience, forcing many of us to love the skin we’re in. Saddi believes: Black people need to see images of themselves with humanity. Women beautiful regardless of size, shape or complexion. Men strong, sensitive and loving. Parents and children caring plus happy. Couples in love in warm intimate moments; as lovers, sensual & sexy but not nasty even when we’re nasty. I DO know how my folks are being fooled and misrepresented in arts/media. I DO know how its affecting us. So, all the work I do is in the intention of combating that. Moikgantsi Kgama is the founder of ImageNation. A former audience development specialist for independent films targeting communities of color, Moikgantsi built a reputation for excellence in her field. She has been credited with the successful launch of Raoul Peck’s independent epic “LUMUMBA” that appeared on HBO and was accepted for Academy Award nomination. Moikgantsi served as publicist for the groundbreaking documentary “LIFE & DEBT,” which appeared on PBS in August 2001, and was the New York City promotions coordinator for the independent film “FOLLOW ME HOME” starring Alfre Woodard and Benjamin Bratt. Moikgantsi also served as a filmmaker coordinator for 1998 The Sundance Film Festival. Her work has enabled her to develop invaluable contacts with numerous independent film establishments such as The Sundance Film Festival, HBO, 40 Acres and A Mule Filmworks, and Urbanworld Film Festival. Moikgantsi was named as one of 25 women who are shaping the world in Essence Magazine.
