Jason Miller, Zach Gillis, and team - The arrival of God comes not with shock and awe, not with the overwhelming power of morning, but with the subtle, even vulnerable presence of a candle flame in the darkness. But together, as we carry that light, may it fill the world. We pre-recorded our Christmas Eve gathering so that, wherever you are, you can sing, pray, celebrate and reflect, lighting candles with us as we welcome the advent of Christ this Christmas. What's Happening Give to our Christmas Offering. Reminder that there will be no gatherings or podcast this weekend, December 28th. RSVP to our New to SBCC Table on January 11. Jason Miller - As we begin our Advent path, walking together toward Christmas, we're celebrating the good news that God's love isn't love in the abstract; it's love in the neighborhood. This last week of Advent, we're looking at a subtle feature in Luke's story of Christmas, one with powerful implications for where and when we expect to meet God. What's Happening Join us on Christmas Eve at 4p or 11p. Give to our Christmas Offering. Find the rest of our Holiday schedule on our website! Jason Miler and Dave Armstrong - As we pursue a vision of love in the neighborhood, we've been continually inspired by a kindred community in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The people of Redeemer Central Church are following Jesus and stewarding a sacred space in the heart of their city, and as we've taken on the call to reactivate the Tribune as a place for the people of South Bend, their story is encouraging us in ours. Our lead pastor, Jason Miller, was with Redeemer in Belfast this week, and he and David Armstrong from Redeemer sat down to share the story of how these two communities are walking together. Mark Waltz, Grace Baker, Pam Blair, and Marty McIntosh - As we begin our Advent path, walking together toward Christmas, we're celebrating the good news that God's love isn't love in the abstract; it's love in the neighborhood. This week, we're hearing from members of SBCC's American South delegation who recently traveled to New Orleans, Selma, and Montgomery to learn more about our complicated and often unjust history, and to be challenged and inspired by modern day peacemakers who are working for something better. Advent: Love Lifts All Places - Jason Miller (Guest) Many of us yearn for sacred spaces, believing true purpose lies elsewhere—in a grander city or a different life. But what if the divine arrives not where we expect, but in the ordinary, even out-of-the-way places we inhabit? In this Advent message, Jason reflects on his deeply personal connection to South Bend, Indiana, and how a fresh reading of the Christmas story in Luke's Gospel challenges our assumptions about sacred geography, quietly elevating Bethlehem—an unexpected and unimpressive town—into a place of profound divine significance.Through this lens, we are invited to see how God's presence has the power to transform any place, and any circumstance, into sacred ground when met with love. As Christ enters the world, our everyday “Bethlehems” are lifted up, becoming spaces of meaning, hope, and the tangible presence of God.Chapters/Timestamps:[00:52] Notice: Christmas Compassion Appeal 2025[03:20] Introduction to Jason Miller and South Bend City Church [06:53] Sermon - Jason MillerAbout Jason Miller Jason serves as a pastor at South Bend City Church (IN, USA), a sister church and kindred community to us at Redeemer Central. Michael Hidalgo - Many of us struggle with the faith we were handed earlier in life. We find it too narrow or exclusionary or harmful. But how to do we pass on something better. Michael is a trusted friend of SBCC, was the pastor of Denver Community Church for 18 years, and joined us this week to share a teaching on how we can give something better to the world. Sean Palmer - John the Baptist is confronted with the growth of Jesus' ministry and baptisms, raising questions about John's significance and our relationship to humility. Sean Palmer is the author of Speaking by the Numbers: Enneagram Wisdom for Teachers, Pastors, and Communicators (IVP 2022) and 40 Days on Being a Three (Enneagram Daily Reflections). He is also the Teaching Pastor at Ecclesia Houston, one of America's most innovative and vibrant multi-site churches, serving a predominance of Millennials and young adults. Sean and his wife, Rochelle, have been married for over 25-years and are parents to two adult daughters. He is also a long-time friend of SBCC, and we're thrilled to have him back. We were also joined by Sharon Irving, a new friend of SBCC. Sharon Irving is a singer, songwriter, worship leader, poet, rapper, actress, and voice over artist. She is an inspiring ‘voice for the voiceless', a passionate wordsmith spewing truth and inspiration, singing songs of life and love motivated by her personal experiences and undergirded by her Christian beliefs. I feel like almost weekly, I'm meeting people who have been away from church, or far from God, for years. And now, you're looking for a home to come back to. You're wanting to return back to God. If that's you, I believe God is saying “Welcome home!” And I'm not just referring to SBCC, though I would love this to be your home… More importantly, home is where God's heart is. Home is in the arms of your Father. Naomi had been far away for at least 10 years before returning home. Maybe for you it's been your entire life. If you've been far from God, I pray you know that He's waiting in the driveway. The door's been unlocked, and the porch light is on. Naomi turned- turned back to God. Maybe today, it's your turn.

Jason Miller - In what the gospel writer calls the first sign of Jesus' glory, Jesus responds to a shortage of wine at a wedding. It's a beautiful story with plenty of meaning at the basic level, but what happens when we also understand its symbolic levels of meaning? Becky Ykema, Beth Graybill, and team - This Sunday, we took an intentional pause from diving into one particular passage in the book of John and hosted a DTR or “define the relationship” with Jesus. The sermon includes three reflection points: noting when we first encountered Jesus in our own lives, when it got complicated, and finally what what we are seeking after in our relationship with Jesus now. We used 3 songs in our reflections, which solely belong to the artists below: Atlantic - Sleeping at Last Moon - Sleeping at Last Ascent, Pt 1 - Hymns for the Architect What's Happening Submit an application to share your tattoo story at INK STORIES, happening on November 8th at 7p at Stockroom East. Jason Miller and Karen Grant - Many of us grew up in one faith tradition or another, and some of us with no church background at all. We have ideas of what we don't want our kids to hear or experience as it relates to God, church, or the Bible. Yet, we want our kids to know God and develop a faith in God. We just need some help. Karen Grant, our Director of Kids and Families, is here to help! Karen has served in a variety of children's ministry settings over the past 18 years and has a B.A. in Bible & Ministry from Bethel University. She is also a freelance artist and has called SBCC home since 2019. In this episode, you'll hear some of Karen's story, and you'll learn more about the vision she leads for kids and families at South Bend City Church. It's an approach that centers the character of God, ensures kids feel seen, safe, and loved, and that sends them home with curiosity and a growing faith. Karen is also offering a fall workshop for parents, beginning Thursday, September 18. This workshop will include a variety of contemporary voices, a little bit of paint, and group conversations, to explore how to talk about God, and to God, with kids. We'll explore ways to celebrate Christmas and Easter that are meaningful for the whole family. We'll learn ways of reading the Bible that are appropriate for kids of all ages. We'll also talk about SBCC's approach to communion and baptism. You'll go home with some simple tools and reminders -created with your own family in mind- that can encourage a child's faith journey.

And the abundant life that Jesus came to share with us is one that involves our whole selves as we heal, grow and learn how to flourish. This series will explore some specific examples of a real world spirituality, shared from the experiences of our teachers who are working these things out in real time in their own lives. This week, we consider the power of nature to help us connect. What's Happening RSVP to our upcoming New to SBCC Table on Sunday, September 7 at 12:15p. This series will explore some specific examples of a real world spirituality, shared from the experiences of our teachers who are working these things out in real time in their own lives. This week, we consider the power of reclaiming out attention in the digital age. This teaching included some reflection questions: How would you describe your current relationship with your smartphone or other digital devices? Are you happy with the amount of time you spend on your phone or other digital devices? Do you think others ever feel that they're competing with your devices for your presence and attention? What's one structural change you could make this week to make it easier to disconnect from the digital crowds and reconnect with God, others, and yourself? Benediction: So, beloved friends— May the Lord bless you and keep you, and may the Divine's face shine warmly upon you. In the same way that you have been a refuge for me—a place of safety and truth. May you know that same safety in one another's arms, and may you offer it freely to all who enter through these doors. In the same way that you gave me the freedom to be wholly myself—questioning, becoming, belonging. May you continue to be a place where freedom is not feared but nurtured, and where becoming never ends. In the same way that you showed me the goodness and faithfulness of Love—embodied, mysterious, divine. May you carry that good and faithful Love into the world. And may you know this: I have seen the face of God in each of you. I have seen more of God in myself because of you. I leave more healed and whole because of you. May grace and peace be with you, Amen. What's Happening Join us on Discord! Make sure that your display name is your first+last name and add an “avatar” (profile picture).
