Much like the zombies that infest its world, the Walking Dead franchise simply refuses to die. With Dead City, the shambling hordes make their way to the island of Manhattan, an urban hellscape now infested with the remnants of a dead civilization. And in the middle, two of the original Walking Dead's main characters, Maggie (Lauren Cohen) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), on a rescue mission that'll test their fractious relationship with each other. While Bear McCreary's more mournful, orchestral sound personified the original series, composer Ian Hultquist sought a newer, more electronic sound, one more reminiscent of John Carpenter's work on Escape from New York (another thriller about characters trying to survive in a walled-off Manhattan). In addition to those ominous synths, Hultquist also made use of a suite of organic sounds of unique provenance, including recruiting friends to travel to the Maine wilderness to collect all manner of sounds. Together, we talk about that sense of sonic experimentation, how Hultquist wanted to move the franchise's sound forward, and the importance of building a sonic palette to work from when composing electronic scores. You can find Ian Hultquist at his official website. The Walking Dead: Dead City is currently airing on AMC and AMC+. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Milan Records.
In the Sliders episode "El Sid", we have the pleasure of encountering a pre-Negan Jeffrey Dean Morgan! Joe and Ashley discuss one of the best episodes of season 2 to this point, how many similarities it has to Demolition Man, and mix up blue collar and white collar prisons (oops!).

Negan’s right hand man, Dwight (Austin Amelio) joins us tonight on the Shadow Nation. He talks about his character, the story arc in general and what it is like workng with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). We talk with Austin for 45 minutes about everything from how he moved from Austin, TX to Hollywood, his crappy first jobs before acting took off, where he likes to hang out in Georgia while filming, his influences, how he first realized the part he got on the Walking Dead was going to be big, how he nearly took out Norman Reedus’ head (Daryl Dixon on the Walking Dead), and how he was able to get his personal motorcycle into the show. We end with a great story about an insulting scene with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Austin and how it went awry (thanks to Jeffrey’s unique style of acting)….

SPOILER ALERT! Online Editor Anthony Zangrillo and Staff Member Sophia Murashkovsky discuss whether spoilers are protected by copyright. This legal question became a hot topic over the summer in the wake of the Walking Dead's sixth season finale, featuring the villainous Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) taking his revenge on an unsuspecting victim with the help of his merciless bat Lucille. Unfortunately, for audiences, the identity of the victim was not revealed. Thus, unrelenting fans began to speculate who was killed in the episode. All of a sudden, a fan stated that The Spoiling Dead Fans site would be posting reveal of the actual victim. This claim was met with a cease and desist and warnings of a potential lawsuit. The podcast attempts to understand which category of intellectual property spoilers fall into. Then, discussion evolves into the competing policy goals of the network preserving its content for its viewer-base against the freedom of fans to conjecture about important scenes. The distinction between trade secret and copyright also brings further nuance to the issue. Comparisons are also made to a similar situation regarding Game of Thrones. If, like us, you're a long suffering fan of The Walking Dead, you're in the midst of emotional and psychological prep for this weekend's Season 6 Finale. The long wait is finally coming to an end with the much anticipated entrance of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the psychopath with a killer smile and a spikey bat. We hope to God that none of our favorite characters face Lucille, but sadly, we know the show (and the comic book) too well. This week we recap the lead up to the Season 6 Finale and voice our thoughts and concerns for the pending gloom and doom on We Talk Dead.
