Actor and former Obama White House staffer Kal Penn joins Sam to talk about how he doesn't make calculated decisions and hates when people suggest he makes a decision tree. They unpack the hope of last week's elections and his serendipitous decades-long connection to Zohran Mamdani. He explains how every job he's ever said yes to has turned into subsequent exciting opportunities that have all been meant to be. They wonder if his former job in the White House even exists anymore, talk about the destruction of the East Wing, and the importance of older leaders training their replacements. Plus they argue about the merits of space travel and if we should leave earth or stay on the ground forever. What do a devout polygamist from an insular Utah sect and a shadowy Armenian tycoon from Los Angeles have in common? More than you'd think. Together, they defrauded the American government out of nearly one billion dollars. "Kingdom of Fraud," a brand new series co-produced by Novel and iHeartPodcasts, has launched.Over seven episodes, Emmy-nominated journalist, investigative reporter and host Michele McPhee traces the extraordinary and unlikely criminal partnership between Jacob Kingston and Levon Termendzhyan, a reputed Armenian crime figure known to those around him as "The Lion." Together, they built a billion dollar fraud conspiracy out of a biofuel subsidy program, and triggered the largest tax investigation in American history.McPhee travels from Salt Lake City and its outskirts where Mormon fundamentalist groups laid roots, to gritty neighborhoods in Los Angeles and beyond to understand how Jacob Kingston, one of his father's more than 100 children and a man desperate to prove his worth to his powerful polygamist clan, The Order, ended up in business with one of LA's most feared operators. And how, once their scheme started generating tens of millions of dollars, they needed to find somewhere far from Utah to hide it all.But this story isn't just about two men and their money. Around Jacob and Levon sits a web of dirty cops, political connections and transnational money launderers that reaches further than the federal agents investigating the case could have imagined.Jacob Kingston was put under unimaginable pressure as law enforcement started circling, but Levon assured him that a shadowy network known only as 'The Boys" - paid badges from the highest levels of federal law enforcement who sold their access to the highest bidder would spring into action to keep the cops at bay.Was Jacob right to put his life in The Lion's hands, or will their billion dollar biofuel empire go up in smoke?"Kingdom of Fraud" is a story about what happens when the most unlikely of alliances is corroded by greed and selfishness - a story of rampant corruption in which every American citizen was a victim.Episodes available here:https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-kingdom-of-fraud-329335210 Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

This week, we’re honoring the ones who raised us and loved us without restraint—while telling the truth about how complicated that love can be. From navigating queerness and identity to unpacking harm, growth, and grace, we reflect on what it takes to build real, evolving relationships with the women who raised us. We share stories of support, moments of tension, and the quiet work of understanding—while asking: what does it mean to celebrate a mother who is still learning how to love you fully? It’s tender, honest, and maybe something you’ll want to bring to therapy next week. Send us an email with your thoughts/comments about the show: BlackFatFemmePod@gmail.com. This is the seventh title to be released from Imagine Entertainment and iHeartMedia's slate of original iHeartPodcasts. The series tells the story of the 1969 student uprising at Morehouse College, where a group of students barricaded themselves inside the administration building-known on Historically Black Colleges and Universities campuses as "The A Building." Set against the backdrop of late-1960s America, "The A Building" explores a volatile period when student activism surged nationwide amid movements for civil rights, women's rights, labor justice, and opposition to the Vietnam War. At Morehouse, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. intensified tensions between the administration and a student body demanding an education that reflected Black history, identity and lived experience-and ultimately led students to hold members of the Board of Trustees hostage for two days demanding reforms to curriculum and improvements to student life. One of the hostages was Martin Luther King Sr., president of the Board of Trustees. One of the student organizers was Samuel L. Jackson-years before he would become one of the most celebrated figures in Hollywood. Samuel L. A heist with a purpose.Blending immersive reenactments with firsthand testimony, archival research and expert analysis, the series unfolds with the tension of a true-crime heist-one driven by moral urgency. "The A Building" examines the risks students took, the consequences they faced, and the lasting impact of their actions on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and student activism nationwide.Co-created and produced by Menelek Lumumba and Hans Charles, the podcast traces the aftermath of the protest, including the expulsion of the students involved, the escalation of political pressure, and the pivotal moment that ultimately led Samuel L. iHeartPodcasts today announced it is partnering with actor, filmmaker and podcaster Rider Strong (Boy Meets World, Cabin Fever) to launch his new audio series, "The Red Weather." This innovative 8-episode autofiction podcast, inspired by Strong's initial work on a documentary about communes in and around his hometown of Sebastopol, California, masterfully blends a fictional true-crime mystery with a profoundly personal real-life narrative. The series will premiere with its first two episodes on January 28, with episodes launching twice weekly thereafter."'The Red Weather' started with me grabbing a microphone and asking old friends about kids we knew who grew up in so-called 'cults,'" said Rider Strong. "As the memories piled up, I wanted to find the best way to draw listeners into that unique time and place. I'm excited to team up with iHeart to bring this deeply personal project to audiences everywhere."The fictional investigative podcast will interrogate true-crime conventions, unreliable narration and the ethics of storytelling - all driven by a 1995 cold case. Strong, playing himself, will delve into the disappearance of his best friend's sister, Anna Trainor, from a commune in 1995. The central crime is fictitious, yet the recorded interviews with real family and friends, along with the exploration of Rider's own past, make for a deeply authentic audio experience and personal journey. Featuring documentary-style recordings with actors on location, "The Red Weather" will create a unique blend of reality and scripted drama, exploring themes of '90s nostalgia, the pitfalls of alternative parenting and misogyny."The concept behind 'The Red Weather' is truly unique, blurring the lines between what is real and what is masterful storytelling in a way that draws the listener in, providing them a glimpse into what life was like during Rider's formative years," said Will Pearson, President of iHeartPodcasts. "Part fiction, part true crime and part autobiographical, this podcast will captivate audiences."The cast of "The Red Weather" includes Strong's parents, his son, his brother Shiloh, as well as actor and director Jon Huertas (This is Us), Rachel Marsh (The Morning Show) and Heidi Sulzman (Hell or High Water)). Additionally, Kyle Morton, lead singer and creative visionary behind indie-rock band Typhoon composed all original music for the series."The Red Weather" is distributed by iHeartPodcasts and will be available on the iHeartRadio app and everywhere podcasts are heard. Christmas Day, 1992. Sarajevo, Bosnia. War is ranging - Serb forces surround the city. For nearly four years, its people have endured daily shelling and sniper attacks, cut off from the rest of the world in the longest siege of a capital city in modern warfare. More than 11,000 people were killed. 1600 of them were children. And in the main hospital, a baby is born: Lejla Damon. Her mother didn’t want anything to do with her - if she held her, she said, she would strangle her. Lejla was born of sexual violence used as a weapon of war. Her birth mother had been raped, repeatedly, by Serb soldiers in a concentration camp. And Lejla was just too closely linked to her attackers for her to bear. Lejla was adopted by a British couple, and grew up in London. She felt alone in her earliest life experiences. But in adulthood, she’s found her Bosnian identity, and become an advocate for the countless other ‘invisible’ children around the world born of sexual violence used as a weapon of war. Crime Writers On...True Crime Review

When Gabe Ortiz's brother was killed in 2023, the prominent Texas lawman had to deal with more than a murder investigation. He had to confront their different life choices. Faced with few prospects, young Gabe left town for the Air Force and the police academy. Meanwhile, his brother Larry stayed at home, where his best opportunity was selling drugs. While Gabe climbed the ranks in the Department of Public Safety, his brother climbed the ranks as a dealer and prison gang leader. But Larry had pulled himself out of The Game to live a more normal life before being gunned down. The question lingers: how did the siblings who were so close as children end up on such opposite paths? The podcast “The Brothers Ortiz” from Campside Media and iHeartPodcasts examines the lives of two men, bound by blood but living in distant worlds. Host Sean Flynn talks with the Ortiz family to learn why the brothers' paths diverged so widely and how they tried to connect despite living on opposing sides of the law. It's a story of how circumstance, choice, and the world around them steered the two men toward separate destinies. OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "THE BROTHERS ORTIZ" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 11 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE. John's monologue is about Trump taking fees from immigrants and US sponsors for services that it has no plans to provide. The government took their money, and now it won't even adjudicate their applications—in many cases, it refuses even to issue denials. The State Department is actually telling consular officers not to notify future applicants that the government has banned them. He also talks about Trump telling reporters he “isn't sending troops anywhere” in Iran, adding that even if he was, he wouldn't tell the press – whom he hates. Even as Trump denies it, national defense insiders in DC report DoD is close to deploying thousands and thousands of troops to the region to take and hold Iranian territory near the Strait of Hormuz. The Pentagon has also asked Congress for $200Billion in supplemental war funds so it can keep escalating conflict with Iran. John then interviews Hans Charles & Menelek Lumumba who are the hosts & co-creators of podcast The A Building, which was launched by Imagine Entertainment and iHeartPodcasts back in February. It is a tale of protest that will hopefully spark the fight in all of us for the next No Kings protests on March 28th. The A Building tells the story of the 1969 student protest at Morehouse College in Atlanta where students (including Samuel L. Jackson) took board of trustee members (including Martin Luther King Sr.) hostage. The event was a pivotal moment in the modern era of student protests, and the podcast explores how the climate of the 60's and 70's reverberates today.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

ABOUT THE A BUILDING iHeartPodcasts and Imagine Entertainment Launch "The A Building" - A Riveting New Documentary Podcast About the Student Uprising That Reshaped Historically Black Colleges and Universities New Series Recounts How a Group of Morehouse College Students in 1969, Including a Young Samuel L. Jackson, Organized a Protest That Took Multiple Hostages, Among Them Martin Luther King Sr. iHeartPodcasts, the No. 1 podcast publisher globally according to Podtrac, and Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment today announced the launch of "The A Building," a powerful new documentary podcast that revisits one of the most extraordinary and rarely told moments in American civil rights and higher-education history-an event that changed the future of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and helped define the modern era of student protest. Samuel L. Jackson and his friends devised a plan to hijack a Board of Trustees meeting to create change. A heist with a purpose. Blending immersive reenactments with firsthand testimony, archival research and expert analysis, the series unfolds with the tension of a true-crime heist-one driven by moral urgency. "The A Building" examines the risks students took, the consequences they faced, and the lasting impact of their actions on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and student activism nationwide. Co-created and produced by Menelek Lumumba and Hans Charles, the podcast traces the aftermath of the protest, including the expulsion of the students involved, the escalation of political pressure, and the pivotal moment that ultimately led Samuel L. Jackson back to Morehouse-where a change in academic focus quietly set him on the path toward acting. "This project has been years in the making, but it feels more relevant than ever," said Menelek Lumumba, co-creator and producer. "I'm grateful we have the opportunity to tell this story about young people who took action, and how their one act of protest continues to reverberate through all those involved over 50 years later." "It's an incredible, unbelievable story when you first hear it," said Hans Charles, co-creator and producer. "That it happened on a campus like Morehouse College, in a city like Atlanta, at such a volatile time, speaks to the importance of telling and exploring what is quintessential American History." "What makes the story of 'The A Building' so compelling is how clearly it reveals the purpose and power of protest," said Nathan Kloke, Executive Producer for Imagine Entertainment. "When Hans and Menelek first brought us this pivotal chapter of American history, it unfolded like a heist film-fast-paced, surprising, and utterly gripping. We're excited to bring audiences along for the ride." "This is premium documentary storytelling that connects history to the present," said Will Pearson, President of iHeartPodcasts. "'The A Building' revisits a moment that feels both historic and urgently relevant, revealing how student voices helped shape lasting institutional change." "The A Building" is part of a growing slate of documentary podcasts from iHeartPodcasts and Imagine Entertainment, including"Hello Isaac," "Unf**cking the Future," "Big Sugar," "The Tao of Muhammad Ali," "Obscurum, and "The Secret World of Roald Dahl," which explore iconic figures, cultural flashpoints, and untold stories through deep reporting and cinematic storytelling. Nathan Kloke and Kara Welker are Executive Producers for Imagine Entertainment in partnership with oddarts media. Katrina Norvell is the Executive Producer for iHeartPodcasts. Crime Writers On...True Crime Review

In 2016, Truman State University was rocked when two fraternity members died by suicide within weeks of each other. But officials were troubled that both students had close ties to Brandon Grossheim, the person who found each of their bodies. Grossheim called himself “The Peacemaker,” someone students could turn to in times of crisis. But as more deaths occurred, and his behavior grew more peculiar, those around him wondered if Grossheim had been steering his classmates away from self-harm…or encouraging it.The podcast “The Peacemaker” from Coolfire Studios and iHeartPodcasts explores a tragic suicide cluster and the one man connected to all the deaths. Host Ben Westhoff and producer Ryan Krull drill down into the unanswered circumstances around each incident, as well as Grossheim's proximity and preoccupation with death. It seeks to answer whether his actions were unsuccessful attempts to counsel people already in crisis or whether he nudged them along a path to self-harm.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "THE PEACEMAKER" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 13 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.In Crime of the Week: Whoville are you? Hi, Hell and Gone listeners! We're excited to share with you a sneak peek at iHeartPodcasts' latest release, Paper Ghosts! Paper Ghosts: In the heart of Texas, teens are dying. Suspicious suicides, strange accidents, and brutal murders litter 1980's Parker County. Weatherford, the same town where the series “Yellowstone” was filmed, is the hardest-hit. Locals have many theories: the KKK runs rampant... a corrupt sheriff’s department... or could the Weatherford Police Department be covering up all of these crimes to protect a sadistic killer? Desperate to keep its deepest, darkest secrets from being exposed, could one sick individual be at the root of it all? Or are the killers working in tandem? M. William Phelps digs in and, after being warned to stay away (or else), he begins to piece together answers in many of these decades-old cold cases.
