The hoaxes that you are probably most familiar with today are tied to legends. They are a means to justify an end. Think of the famous grainy photo of the Loch Ness Monster which was falsified to prove the monster's existence. Similarly, think of the sketchy video of Big Foot which was also tampered with to prove that Sasquatch was real. But what of the hoaxes that stand alone? The hoaxes that confuse or mislead even the most intelligent minds. These are where the juicy stories can be found. Today, on Found Objects, I share a story or two (or several lol) about hoaxes that will make you stop in your tracks and consider the validity of even the most seemingly legitimate tales. Some hoaxes are meant to scam you out of money. Some are to prove a point with fake news. Some are just for fun. In the 1860s, a staunch atheist wanted to prove the bible story of giants roaming the Earth a fraud and came up with an expensive and elaborate hoax now known as The Cardiff Giant. You can still see it in Cooperstown, NY along with the baseball hall of fame! Over a hundred years later, a mystery person launched and internet campaign to save the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus. This was purely for fun but it ended up being used as a tool to teach kids about internet safety. Want to check it out? It’s an election year and the U.S. is experiencing a seemingly more contentious political climate than usual. In this episode of 3Ps in a Pod, hosts Donnie and Angelia discuss how they handled election seasons and politics in their classrooms before welcoming Beth Maloney, 2014 Arizona Teacher of the Year, to talk more about civics and respectful discourse. Together, they discuss media literacy, differentiating opinion from fact, strategies for generating discussion, bias in the classroom, and communicating with parents. Maloney sites Common Sense Media for Educators as a helpful resource for elementary school teachers. She also introduces Donnie and Angelia to the Save the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus campaign. Be sure to find more information about the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus here. Click here to open up a reflection guide for this episode to help you plan your civics instruction. The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus is a unique and rare creature that resides only in Cascadia. It resides in the coniferous forests found in the Olympic National Forest. It's a strange amphibian, residing on both land and sea. When on land it lives high in the trees so that few humans have actually seen one in the wild. We recently learned that the octopus could be extinct soon.  Decades of encroachment by humans have limited the range of the octopus and is endangering them. Coupled with the ever increasing population of the octopus' two natural predators, eagles and Sasquatch, these creatures could be gone within the next decade or so. If you are still reading this, happy april fool's day. Listen to this episode for a good laugh at some of our outtakes from the past year.
