This week we cover incorporating diseases, curses, maladies, and other general afflictions into your tabletop roleplaying games. We analyze why we think this aspect of gaming doesn't get as much love as it should and talk about some interesting ways to make it work at your table. We go over how to run diseases and curses, pick apart how they can affect your campaign, give tips on how to make them a more meaningful part of the world, and offer examples that bridge the gap between the mundane and the supernatural.Website: https://icastspells.comTwitter: @passive_podcastEmail: firstname.lastname@example.orgShow Breakdown:0:00: Intro2:23: TTRPG News17:31: @Flyingfox369 "Being tasteful with diseases in games"21:14: Main Topic30:42: @FightGuyStudio "Making disease the basis for an entire TTRPG campaign"35:17: @LucyDnDPrincess "using the looming possibility of a disease as a potential apocalypse event"41:58: @DiceTherapy "Lycanthropy, weresharks, vampirism, and other supernatural afflictions"54:08: Social Information55:05: Examples of curses, diseases, and other afflictions to use in your TTRPG campaigns01:02:07: The Malady Workshop (Unique maladies created for 5e written by med students)
In Williams Township PA there exists a place in the woods called Hexenkopf Rock - it means Witch's Head. However, Williams Township is not the only place in which these strange tales persist. In Stewartstown, PA there is a place called Rehmeyer's Hollow where tales of hexerie, curses, witches, murders and hauntings are still told today. Psalms and Wisdom: Proverbs 30–31:9 Proverbs 30–31:9 (Listen) The Words of Agur 30 The words of Agur son of Jakeh. The oracle.1 The man declares, I am weary, O God; I am weary, O God, and worn out.22 Surely I am too stupid to be a man. I have not the understanding of a man.3 I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One.4 Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name? Surely you know! 5 Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.6 Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar. 7 Two things I ask of you; deny them not to me before I die:8 Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me,9 lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the LORD?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God. 10 Do not slander a servant to his master, lest he curse you, and you be held guilty. 11 There are those3 who curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers.12 There are those who are clean in their own eyes but are not washed of their filth.13 There are those—how lofty are their eyes, how high their eyelids lift!14 There are those whose teeth are swords, whose fangs are knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, the needy from among mankind. 15 The leech has two daughters: Give and Give.4 Three things are never satisfied; four never say, “Enough”:16 Sheol, the barren womb, the land never satisfied with water, and the fire that never says, “Enough.” 17 The eye that mocks a father and scorns to obey a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures. 18 Three things are too wonderful for me; four I do not understand:19 the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a virgin. 20 This is the way of an adulteress: she eats and wipes her mouth and says, “I have done no wrong.” 21 Under three things the earth trembles; under four it cannot bear up:22 a slave when he becomes king, and a fool when he is filled with food;23 an unloved woman when she gets a husband, and a maidservant when she displaces her mistress. 24 Four things on earth are small, but they are exceedingly wise:25 the ants are a people not strong, yet they provide their food in the summer;26 the rock badgers are a people not mighty, yet they make their homes in the cliffs;27 the locusts have no king, yet all of them march in rank;28 the lizard you can take in your hands, yet it is in kings' palaces. 29 Three things are stately in their tread; four are stately in their stride:30 the lion, which is mightiest among beasts and does not turn back before any;31 the strutting rooster,5 the he-goat, and a king whose army is with him.6 32 If you have been foolish, exalting yourself, or if you have been devising evil, put your hand on your mouth.33 For pressing milk produces curds, pressing the nose produces blood, and pressing anger produces strife. The Words of King Lemuel 31 The words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him: 2 What are you doing, my son?7 What are you doing, son of my womb? What are you doing, son of my vows?3 Do not give your strength to women, your ways to those who destroy kings.4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to take strong drink,5 lest they drink and forget what has been decreed and pervert the rights of all the afflicted.6 Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress;87 let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more.8 Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute.99 Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy. They shall pursue you until you perish. 23 And the heavens over your head shall be bronze, and the earth under you shall be iron. 24 The LORD will make the rain of your land powder. From heaven dust shall come down on you until you are destroyed. 25 “The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You shall go out one way against them and flee seven ways before them. And you shall be a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. 26 And your dead body shall be food for all birds of the air and for the beasts of the earth, and there shall be no one to frighten them away. 27 The LORD will strike you with the boils of Egypt, and with tumors and scabs and itch, of which you cannot be healed. 28 The LORD will strike you with madness and blindness and confusion of mind, 29 and you shall grope at noonday, as the blind grope in darkness, and you shall not prosper in your ways.2 And you shall be only oppressed and robbed continually, and there shall be no one to help you. 30 You shall betroth a wife, but another man shall ravish her. You shall build a house, but you shall not dwell in it. You shall plant a vineyard, but you shall not enjoy its fruit. 31 Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, but you shall not eat any of it. Your donkey shall be seized before your face, but shall not be restored to you. Your sheep shall be given to your enemies, but there shall be no one to help you. 32 Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another people, while your eyes look on and fail with longing for them all day long, but you shall be helpless. 33 A nation that you have not known shall eat up the fruit of your ground and of all your labors, and you shall be only oppressed and crushed continually, 34 so that you are driven mad by the sights that your eyes see. 35 The LORD will strike you on the knees and on the legs with grievous boils of which you cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head. 36 “The LORD will bring you and your king whom you set over you to a nation that neither you nor your fathers have known. And there you shall serve other gods of wood and stone. 37 And you shall become a horror, a proverb, and a byword among all the peoples where the LORD will lead you away. 38 You shall carry much seed into the field and shall gather in little, for the locust shall consume it. 39 You shall plant vineyards and dress them, but you shall neither drink of the wine nor gather the grapes, for the worm shall eat them. 40 You shall have olive trees throughout all your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives shall drop off. 41 You shall father sons and daughters, but they shall not be yours, for they shall go into captivity. 42 The cricket3 shall possess all your trees and the fruit of your ground. 43 The sojourner who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, and you shall not lend to him. He shall be the head, and you shall be the tail. 45 “All these curses shall come upon you and pursue you and overtake you till you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes that he commanded you. 46 They shall be a sign and a wonder against you and your offspring forever. 47 Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joyfulness and gladness of heart, because of the abundance of all things, 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger and thirst, in nakedness, and lacking everything. And he will put a yoke of iron on your neck until he has destroyed you. 49 The LORD will bring a nation against you from far away, from the end of the earth, swooping down like the eagle, a nation whose language you do not understand, 50 a hard-faced nation who shall not respect the old or show mercy to the young. 51 It shall eat the offspring of your cattle and the fruit of your ground, until you are destroyed; it also shall not leave you grain, wine, or oil, the increase of your herds or the young of your flock, until they have caused you to perish. 52 “They shall besiege you in all your towns, until your high and fortified walls, in which you trusted, come down throughout all your land. And they shall besiege you in all your towns throughout all your land, which the LORD your God has given you. 53 And you shall eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your sons and daughters, whom the LORD your God has given you, in the siege and in the distress with which your enemies shall distress you. 54 The man who is the most tender and refined among you will begrudge food to his brother, to the wife he embraces,4 and to the last of the children whom he has left, 55 so that he will not give to any of them any of the flesh of his children whom he is eating, because he has nothing else left, in the siege and in the distress with which your enemy shall distress you in all your towns. 56 The most tender and refined woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground because she is so delicate and tender, will begrudge to the husband she embraces,5 to her son and to her daughter, 57 her afterbirth that comes out from between her feet and her children whom she bears, because lacking everything she will eat them secretly, in the siege and in the distress with which your enemy shall distress you in your towns. 58 “If you are not careful to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and awesome name, the LORD your God, 59 then the LORD will bring on you and your offspring extraordinary afflictions, afflictions severe and lasting, and sicknesses grievous and lasting. 60 And he will bring upon you again all the diseases of Egypt, of which you were afraid, and they shall cling to you. 61 Every sickness also and every affliction that is not recorded in the book of this law, the LORD will bring upon you, until you are destroyed. 62 Whereas you were as numerous as the stars of heaven, you shall be left few in number, because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God. 63 And as the LORD took delight in doing you good and multiplying you, so the LORD will take delight in bringing ruin upon you and destroying you. And you shall be plucked off the land that you are entering to take possession of it. 64 “And the LORD will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other, and there you shall serve other gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your fathers have known. 65 And among these nations you shall find no respite, and there shall be no resting place for the sole of your foot, but the LORD will give you there a trembling heart and failing eyes and a languishing soul. 66 Your life shall hang in doubt before you. Night and day you shall be in dread and have no assurance of your life. 67 In the morning you shall say, ‘If only it were evening!' and at evening you shall say, ‘If only it were morning!' because of the dread that your heart shall feel, and the sights that your eyes shall see. 68 And the LORD will bring you back in ships to Egypt, a journey that I promised that you should never make again; and there you shall offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but there will be no buyer.” Footnotes 28:22 Or sword 28:29 Or shall not succeed in finding your ways 28:42 Identity uncertain 28:54 Hebrew the wife of his bosom 28:56 Hebrew the husband of her bosom (ESV) Chronicles and Prophets: Micah 5 Micah 5 (Listen) The Ruler to Be Born in Bethlehem 5 1 Now muster your troops, O daughter2 of troops; siege is laid against us; with a rod they strike the judge of Israel on the cheek.2 3 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.3 Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers shall return to the people of Israel.4 And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth.5 And he shall be their peace. When the Assyrian comes into our land and treads in our palaces, then we will raise against him seven shepherds and eight princes of men;6 they shall shepherd the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod at its entrances; and he shall deliver us from the Assyrian when he comes into our land and treads within our border. A Remnant Shall Be Delivered 7 Then the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many peoples like dew from the LORD, like showers on the grass, which delay not for a man nor wait for the children of man.8 And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, like a lion among the beasts of the forest, like a young lion among the flocks of sheep, which, when it goes through, treads down and tears in pieces, and there is none to deliver.9 Your hand shall be lifted up over your adversaries, and all your enemies shall be cut off. 10 And in that day, declares the LORD, I will cut off your horses from among you and will destroy your chariots;11 and I will cut off the cities of your land and throw down all your strongholds;12 and I will cut off sorceries from your hand, and you shall have no more tellers of fortunes;13 and I will cut off your carved images and your pillars from among you, and you shall bow down no more

Today in our series Pastor Mark delivers a topical sermon regarding the concept of covenant using our text as a springboard. Consider with us the mystery of the covenant's tension between promises to bless and promises to curse disobedience and how they are both satisfied in Christ's death.
Psalms and Wisdom: Proverbs 27–28 Proverbs 27–28 (Listen) 27 Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.2 Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.3 A stone is heavy, and sand is weighty, but a fool's provocation is heavier than both.4 Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?5 Better is open rebuke than hidden love.6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy.7 One who is full loathes honey, but to one who is hungry everything bitter is sweet.8 Like a bird that strays from its nest is a man who strays from his home.9 Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel.110 Do not forsake your friend and your father's friend, and do not go to your brother's house in the day of your calamity. Better is a neighbor who is near than a brother who is far away.11 Be wise, my son, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him who reproaches me.12 The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.13 Take a man's garment when he has put up security for a stranger, and hold it in pledge when he puts up security for an adulteress.214 Whoever blesses his neighbor with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, will be counted as cursing.15 A continual dripping on a rainy day and a quarrelsome wife are alike;16 to restrain her is to restrain the wind or to grasp3 oil in one's right hand.17 Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.418 Whoever tends a fig tree will eat its fruit, and he who guards his master will be honored.19 As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects the man.20 Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied, and never satisfied are the eyes of man.21 The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and a man is tested by his praise.22 Crush a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with crushed grain, yet his folly will not depart from him. 23 Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds,24 for riches do not last forever; and does a crown endure to all generations?25 When the grass is gone and the new growth appears and the vegetation of the mountains is gathered,26 the lambs will provide your clothing, and the goats the price of a field.27 There will be enough goats' milk for your food, for the food of your household and maintenance for your girls.28 The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.2 When a land transgresses, it has many rulers, but with a man of understanding and knowledge, its stability will long continue.3 A poor man who oppresses the poor is a beating rain that leaves no food.4 Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law strive against them.5 Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the LORD understand it completely.6 Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.7 The one who keeps the law is a son with understanding, but a companion of gluttons shames his father.8 Whoever multiplies his wealth by interest and profit5 gathers it for him who is generous to the poor.9 If one turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.10 Whoever misleads the upright into an evil way will fall into his own pit, but the blameless will have a goodly inheritance.11 A rich man is wise in his own eyes, but a poor man who has understanding will find him out.12 When the righteous triumph, there is great glory, but when the wicked rise, people hide themselves.13 Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.14 Blessed is the one who fears the LORD6 always, but whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity.15 Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a poor people.16 A ruler who lacks understanding is a cruel oppressor, but he who hates unjust gain will prolong his days.17 If one is burdened with the blood of another, he will be a fugitive until death;7 let no one help him.18 Whoever walks in integrity will be delivered, but he who is crooked in his ways will suddenly fall.19 Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits will have plenty of poverty.20 A faithful man will abound with blessings, but whoever hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.21 To show partiality is not good, but for a piece of bread a man will do wrong.22 A stingy man8 hastens after wealth and does not know that poverty will come upon him.23 Whoever rebukes a man will afterward find more favor than he who flatters with his tongue.24 Whoever robs his father or his mother and says, “That is no transgression,” is a companion to a man who destroys.25 A greedy man stirs up strife, but the one who trusts in the LORD will be enriched.26 Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.27 Whoever gives to the poor will not want, but he who hides his eyes will get many a curse.28 When the wicked rise, people hide themselves, but when they perish, the righteous increase. Footnotes 27:9 Or and so does the sweetness of a friend that comes from his earnest counsel 27:13 Hebrew a foreign woman; a slight emendation yields (compare Vulgate; see also 20:16) foreigners 27:16 Hebrew to meet with 27:17 Hebrew sharpens the face of another 28:8 That is, profit that comes from charging interest to the poor 28:14 Hebrew lacks the Lord 28:17 Hebrew until the pit 28:22 Hebrew A man whose eye is evil (ESV) Pentateuch and History: Deuteronomy 27 Deuteronomy 27 (Listen) The Altar on Mount Ebal 27 Now Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, “Keep the whole commandment that I command you today. 2 And on the day you cross over the Jordan to the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall set up large stones and plaster them with plaster. 3 And you shall write on them all the words of this law, when you cross over to enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you. 4 And when you have crossed over the Jordan, you shall set up these stones, concerning which I command you today, on Mount Ebal, and you shall plaster them with plaster. 5 And there you shall build an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. You shall wield no iron tool on them; 6 you shall build an altar to the LORD your God of uncut1 stones. And you shall offer burnt offerings on it to the LORD your God, 7 and you shall sacrifice peace offerings and shall eat there, and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God. 8 And you shall write on the stones all the words of this law very plainly.” Curses from Mount Ebal 9 Then Moses and the Levitical priests said to all Israel, “Keep silence and hear, O Israel: this day you have become the people of the LORD your God. 10 You shall therefore obey the voice of the LORD your God, keeping his commandments and his statutes, which I command you today.” 11 That day Moses charged the people, saying, 12 “When you have crossed over the Jordan, these shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. 13 And these shall stand on Mount Ebal for the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. 14 And the Levites shall declare to all the men of Israel in a loud voice: 15 “‘Cursed be the man who makes a carved or cast metal image, an abomination to the LORD, a thing made by the hands of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret.' And all the people shall answer and say, ‘Amen.' 16 “‘Cursed be anyone who dishonors his father or his mother.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 17 “‘Cursed be anyone who moves his neighbor's landmark.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 18 “‘Cursed be anyone who misleads a blind man on the road.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 19 “‘Cursed be anyone who perverts the justice due to the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 20 “‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his father's wife, because he has uncovered his father's nakedness.'2 And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 21 “‘Cursed be anyone who lies with any kind of animal.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 22 “‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his sister, whether the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 23 “‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his mother-in-law.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 24 “‘Cursed be anyone who strikes down his neighbor in secret.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 25 “‘Cursed be anyone who takes a bribe to shed innocent blood.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 26 “‘Cursed be anyone who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' Footnotes 27:6 Hebrew whole 27:20 Hebrew uncovered his father's skirt (ESV) Chronicles and Prophets: Micah 3 Micah 3 (Listen) Rulers and Prophets Denounced 3 And I said: Hear, you heads of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel! Is it not for you to know justice?—2 you who hate the good and love the evil, who tear the skin from off my people1 and their flesh from off their bones,3 who eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them, and break their bones in pieces and chop them up like meat in a pot, like flesh in a cauldron. 4 Then they will cry to the LORD, but he will not answer them; he will hide his face from them at that time, because they have made their deeds evil. 5 Thus says the LORD concerning the prophets who lead my people astray, who cry “Peace” when they have something to eat, but declare war against him who puts nothing into their mouths.6 Therefore it shall be night to you, without vision, and darkness to you, without divination. The sun shall go down on the prophets, and the day shall be black over them;7 the seers shall be disgraced, and the diviners put to shame; they shall all cover their lips, for there is no answer from God.8 But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the LORD, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin. 9 Hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel, who detest justice and make crooked all that is straight,10 who build Zion with blood and Jerusalem with iniquity.11 Its heads give judgment for a bribe; its priests teach for a price; its prophets practice divination for money; yet they lean on the LORD and say, “Is not the LORD in the midst of us? No disaster shall come upon us.”12 Therefore because of you Zion shall be plowed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height. Footnotes 3:2 Hebrew from off them (ESV) Gospels and Epistles: Matthew 6:1–18 Matthew 6:1–18 (Listen) Giving to the Needy 6 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. The Lord's Prayer 5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.110 Your kingdom come, your will be done,2 on earth as it is in heaven.11 Give us this day our daily bread,312 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.4 14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you,

With family: Deuteronomy 27–28:19; Psalm 119:1–24 Deuteronomy 27–28:19 (Listen) The Altar on Mount Ebal 27 Now Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, “Keep the whole commandment that I command you today. 14 And the Levites shall declare to all the men of Israel in a loud voice: 15 “‘Cursed be the man who makes a carved or cast metal image, an abomination to the LORD, a thing made by the hands of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret.' And all the people shall answer and say, ‘Amen.' 16 “‘Cursed be anyone who dishonors his father or his mother.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 17 “‘Cursed be anyone who moves his neighbor's landmark.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 18 “‘Cursed be anyone who misleads a blind man on the road.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 19 “‘Cursed be anyone who perverts the justice due to the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 20 “‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his father's wife, because he has uncovered his father's nakedness.'2 And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 21 “‘Cursed be anyone who lies with any kind of animal.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 22 “‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his sister, whether the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 23 “‘Cursed be anyone who lies with his mother-in-law.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 24 “‘Cursed be anyone who strikes down his neighbor in secret.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 25 “‘Cursed be anyone who takes a bribe to shed innocent blood.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' 26 “‘Cursed be anyone who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.' And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.' Blessings for Obedience 28 “And if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. 2 And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the LORD your God. 3 Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. 4 Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. 5 Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. 6 Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out. 7 “The LORD will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before you. They shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways. 8 The LORD will command the blessing on you in your barns and in all that you undertake. And he will bless you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. 9 The LORD will establish you as a people holy to himself, as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in his ways. 10 And all the peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they shall be afraid of you. 11 And the LORD will make you abound in prosperity, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your livestock and in the fruit of your ground, within the land that the LORD swore to your fathers to give you. 12 The LORD will open to you his good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. And you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. 13 And the LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you shall only go up and not down, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you today, being careful to do them, 14 and if you do not turn aside from any of the words that I command you today, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them. Curses for Disobedience 15 “But if you will not obey the voice of the LORD your God or be careful to do all his commandments and his statutes that I command you today, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you. 16 Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the field. 17 Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. 18 Cursed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. 19 Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out. By guarding it according to your word.10 With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments!11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.12 Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes!13 With my lips I declare all the rules3 of your mouth.14 In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches.15 I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.16 I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word. For the children of the desolate one will be more than the children of her who is married,” says the LORD.2 “Enlarge the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes.3 For you will spread abroad to the right and to the left, and your offspring will possess the nations and will people the desolate cities. 4 “Fear not, for you will not be ashamed; be not confounded, for you will not be disgraced; for you will forget the shame of your youth, and the reproach of your widowhood you will remember no more.5 For your Maker is your husband, the LORD of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called.6 For the LORD has called you like a wife deserted and grieved in spirit, like a wife of youth when she is cast off, says your God.7 For a brief moment I deserted you, but with great compassion I will gather you.8 In overflowing anger for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,” says the LORD, your Redeemer. 9 “This is like the days of Noah1 to me: as I swore that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you, and will not rebuke you.10 For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you. 11 “O afflicted one, storm-tossed and not comforted, behold, I will set your stones in antimony, and lay your foundations with sapphires.212 I will make your pinnacles of agate,3 your gates of carbuncles,4 and all your wall of precious stones.13 All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children.14 In righteousness you shall be established; you shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear; and from terror, for it shall not come near you.15 If anyone stirs up strife, it is not from me; whoever stirs up strife with you shall fall because of you.16 Behold, I have created the smith who blows the fire of coals and produces a weapon for its purpose. I have also created the ravager to destroy;17 no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. For we saw his star when it rose2 and have come to worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: 6 “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'” 7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. The Flight to Egypt 13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” Herod Kills the Children 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: 18 “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.” The Return to Nazareth 19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead.” 21 And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. 23 And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene. This message tackles the difficult topic of blessings and curses. Deuteronomy 28-29 spells out the consequences of obedience and disobedience to God's word. Do curses still exist? This is Part Two of Greg's recent interview with uber-expat Christopher G. Moore, author, raconteur, and general man-about-town. In true Renaissance guy fashion, the two men jump from topic to topic, each more interesting than the next. First, Greg asks Chris about how translations of his books are undertaken, and Chris tells a fascinating story of how the length of the translations of his novels in China are arbitrarily set by the Communist Central Committee. You'd think they'd have better things to do. :) Next, Chris relates his origin story and how he saved his first apartment from becoming a toothbrush factory. (No, this is not made up.) Through various serendipitous occurrences, Chris managed to stay in the apartment for more than twenty years with a very low rent, allowing him to build his career as a novelist. This segues into a discussion of the evolution of fitness and gym culture over the last thirty years, with both guys giving theories to explain Thais' adoption of the western phenomenon. The conversation continues with the senior expats trading stories back and forth about the changing physical and cultural landscape of Bangkok, and a story about women's underwear that's good advice for those who want to avoid being cursed. Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. And we'll keep our Facebook, Twitter, and LINE accounts active so you can send us comments, questions, or whatever you want to share.

What happens when a society as a whole rebels against God's covenant? When christians scratch their head and ask "Why is this happening to us?" Our guest today, Ray Simmons of The Confessionalists, provides remarkably simple insight into our current cultural climate: we have transgressed God's covenant and have brought a curse upon our land. The solution? Repentance and confession of Christ as Lord. Find Ray Simmons' work at theconfessionalists.com Link to the talk by Rushdoony referenced by Ray in the episode: https://bit.ly/3tqcpBS

In Deuteronomy 23:5 God revealed that because He loves His people, He turns curses into blessings. This is such a mighty truth. However, it goes much deeper. Not only does God do this for His people; He does this to His people. Many of us, at one time or another, were, knowingly or unknowingly, a curse to others. Because we were not aligned with God ourselves, we influenced others toward ungodliness. But then God saved us, and we became a blessing. You will see yourself in a new light after you listen to these truths. You are important to God's purposes! www.shreveministries.org

Cursed?: What to do with the curses in Genesis 3 When Adam and Eve ate the fruit in the Garden of Eden, God laid down several curses. For the serpent, the woman, and the man. But what do we DO with these curses? Are we supposed to perpetuate the ideas behind them, or move away from them? What's this story teaching us, anyway? Do you believe that objects, places and even people can be cursed? What happens when you conjure the unknown? There are plenty of curses here in the Pacific Northwest and on this episode we take a look at a few as well as some beings that have been conjured within our own culture.
George Noory and psychic medium Lisa McGarrity explore her history of breaking curses, how to know if you have been cursed, famous curses that lasted for generations, and how to use your own abilities to break a curse. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Most people think that the worst word curses come from witches and Satanists. But did you know that some of the worst word curses actually come from our own mouths? In this episode, Lance discusses how self-talk and confessions can have a powerful impact on our lives – for good or bad. He also shares some biblical examples of how words have brought healing and restoration – as well as destruction. So what are you going to do with your words? Will you use them to curse yourself – or to bless yourself and others? The choice is yours!

Derek confronts us with a decision today; whether we will choose blessings or curses. Blessings come upon us when we hear God and obey what He says. Curses come from not hearing and obeying. It is up to you to make the decision which course to take in your life.
