In this episode of the Anglotopia Podcast, Jonathan Thomas sits down with Jeremy Harte — folklorist, winner of the Catherine Briggs Folklore Award, curator of Bourne Hall Museum in Surrey, and author of Cloven Country: The Devil in the English Landscape and Travelers Through Time: A Gypsy History — to discuss his remarkable new book Treasures on Earth: Buried Wealth in the English Landscape, published by Reaktion Books. Jeremy has spent his career chasing the uncanny side of the English landscape, and in this book he has gathered hundreds of treasure legends together for the first time — organizing them not by region or date but by emotion: memory, ruin, strife, terror, failure, and longing. The result is one of the most original and quietly brilliant books on English folklore in years, and the conversation it generates is irresistible: Why did people surround buried gold with dragons, black hens, and demons? What does the moment a laborer on the River Ribble accidentally uncovered a Viking army's war chest have in common with Oak Island? Why is the folklore always cruelest at the very last minute? What is the real fantasy underneath the search for treasure — not gold, but escape, freedom, and the dream of never having to work again? And what does the figure of Mackenzie Crook's Detectorists, swinging their machines over Essex fields and dreaming of Saxon gold, tell us about the ancient human urge that these legends have always mapped? Links Treasures on Earth by Jeremy Harte (Reaktion Books) Cloven Country: The Devil in the English Landscape by Jeremy Harte Travelers Through Time: A Gypsy History by Jeremy Harte Bourne Hall Museum, Ewell, Surrey The Cuerdale Hoard The Rillaton Cup Detectorists — Mackenzie Crook (BBC/AcornTV) Friends of Anglotopia Club Takeaways Treasure legends are not really about gold. They are, as Jeremy Harte argues throughout, about the emotions that surround gold — longing, memory, failure, terror, and the fantasy of transformation. The stories survived because of what they did to the people who told and heard them, not because of any actual buried wealth. The Cuerdale Hoard — the largest Viking silver hoard ever found in Britain, unearthed by laborers straightening the River Ribble in the 1840s — is one of the most powerful examples of how real treasure finds retrospectively generate legends. Almost all treasure "traditions" that seem to predict a find are only recorded after the find is made. The classic Anglo-Saxon image of the dragon sitting on a barrow of gold — doing nothing but guarding it forever, sacrificing whatever life a dragon might have — is, Jeremy argues, an early cultural articulation of what happens when treasure takes over a human life. The same psychology drives Oak Island today. Treasure guardians shift with the centuries — dragons and giants give way to fairies, then to demons, then to ghosts — not randomly but in response to what each era finds believable. A legend must sit in the zone between "obviously true" and "obviously made up" to function: too real and it's history, too fantastic and it's a fairy tale. The dissolution of the monasteries did not immediately generate treasure legends. It took fifty to a hundred years for the trauma to work its way into folklore — appearing in ghost monks, ruined abbey atmosphere, and stories of gold thrown into ponds or bricked up in tunnels. Society, like individuals, needs time to process collective shock before it becomes story. Mary Parrish, a "brandy-loving London cunning woman," and Goodwin Wharton, the gullible aristocrat she led on a years-long quest for fairy gold — documented entirely from Wharton's own obsessive diary — are perhaps the most human pair in the book. Wharton was simultaneously a reasonably successful MP, raised money from syndicates, and organized diving bells off the Scottish coast for Armada treasure. Jeremy describes their relationship as "a con, but also a love story." The folk cruelty of treasure legends — the fortune always snatched away by one tiny mistake, a single word spoken, one black hair on a white ox — is not random. These stories circulated among communities who had not done well for themselves. The unkindness of fate felt true to their experience. The treasure was always just out of reach because that was always true. The real fantasy of treasure, Jeremy argues, is not wealth but escape — to become a gentleman, meaning someone visibly unencumbered by the need to work. The problem for many of the poor communities generating these legends was that even if they found a single coin, they could not spend it without someone asking where it came from. Less than 10% of records are digital — a parallel to archaeology, where the vast majority of objects are still in the ground. Metal detectorists and archaeologists have more in common than either entirely admits: both are animated by the same desire to find something and to validate themselves through the finding. The difference is in what they're willing to record and share. The book closes with the gardener at Wallingford who dug for buried treasure in his spare time until one day they found a fresh hole, his spade and gloves beside it, and the man himself was never seen again. Jeremy chose this image deliberately: "It was almost like, if I'd been giving a talk, it would have been time for me to wave bye-bye and disappear behind a curtain." Soundbites "Treasure is so potent it doesn't have to exist to destabilize human life. Most of the hordes in the book will never be found because they were never there." — Jeremy on the central argument of the book. "You find an Iron Age gold coin and it was — if it had been anything else, it would have been archaeology. It was the gold that made that different emotive feeling. And I thought I ought to be exploring that a bit." — Jeremy on the moment in the dried-out lake that started it all. "Think about the Anglo-Saxon dragon. He does nothing but guard gold, and sacrifices whatever a dragon life would be to just sit there forever in the darkness on the treasure. I thought, yeah, there is a common theme here." — Jeremy on why Oak Island and the dragon barrow are the same story. "It has to be the kind of thing you can announce in the pub and there will be a lively discussion with people banging down their pints and going, well bits of it could be true. It has to sit in that zone — too real and it's just history, too fantastic and it's a fairy tale." — Jeremy on what makes a legend work. "Mary Parrish — we have an entirely one-sided record. Goodwin Wharton was the literary half of the partnership. He even organized diving bells to try to dig up the treasure of the Armada off the coast of Scotland. And at the same time he is a fairly successful MP making his way up in government. Leading me to wonder what secrets might possibly lie in the diaries of some of our present members." — Jeremy on the Mary Parrish and Goodwin Wharton story. "People telling stories about lost treasure — the poorer the community, the more likely they are to be doing it. There's a sense of the unkindness of fate. People who had mastered fate and done quite well for themselves were sitting in the other corner and not contacting the gentleman with the story." — Jeremy on why treasure legends cluster around poverty. "The dissolution of the monasteries is recorded historically, basically day by day. What happened to the stuff is pretty well recorded. But it's not until well into the seventeenth century that you get the tropes of the monastic ghost, the buried treasures, the ghost monks. It took fifty to a hundred years for the trauma to work its way into folklore." — Jeremy on how collective trauma becomes legend. "The fantasy is to become a gentleman. Gentlemen are conspicuously visible in the countryside as people who wander around having no apparent need to work at anything whatsoever. Which of course is why they can go around collecting folk tales." — Jeremy on the real dream underneath treasure hunting. "When I actually go on site, my skepticism rolls away after about five miles walking. And I'm like, ooh, let's just have a quick look underneath here. There's a patch of dirt here. Let's just check. And I thought it'd be terribly embarrassing if I did actually find a hoard of gold. It's like — yeah, publicity exercise." — Jeremy's most English answer to whether he believes any treasure is really out there. "He'd disappeared and it was almost like, if I'd been giving a talk, it would have been time for me to wave bye-bye and disappear behind a curtain and go out the back." — Jeremy on why he ended the book with the vanishing gardener of Wallingford. His hand shot toward the prophet, and froze stiff in midair, withered before he could pull it back. Days later, that same prophet was found dead on a desert road, mauled by a lion that never touched the body, never touched the donkey standing beside it. What was guarding that body, and why wouldn't it eat? Lance Wallnau walks through 1 Kings 13, one of the strangest chapters in the Old Testament, to show how a king's altar, a deceiving "brother" prophet, and a literal physical curse expose something every family still deals with today. Why does the same curse skip a generation then come back? In this episode: * The complete 1 Kings 13 account * The deceiving prophet who lied about an angel's visit, and the lion that killed but wouldn't touch the body * The Hebrew word for iniquity and how it opens a door for a spirit to move through a bloodline * Why the same root spirit can resurface generation to generation as addiction, overeating, control, or workaholism * Soul ties from past relationships, and why objects you're still holding onto might still be tied to them * The only child in his bloodline who received a proper burial, and why * How to recognize, repent of, and rebuke a generational pattern before it passes to your kids Curses don't run in families by accident. There's always a door, and there's always a way to shut it. Podcast Episode 2166: Why Some Curses Skip a Generation, Then Come Back | don't miss this! With antisemitism and anti-Zionism on the rise, are Jews alone in today's world, or is that belief a powerful myth actively shaping Jewish identity and relationships for the worse? In this episode of TEXTing IRL, Elana Stein Hain and Rabba Rori Picker Neiss, Senior Vice President of Jewish Council for Public Affairs, read Parashat Balak to explore how questions of power, fear, and vulnerability shape Jewish relationships. Drawing from Proverbs 18:21, neuroscience, personal testimony, and biblical deliverance principles, Kathy reveals how repeated language becomes repeated thinking and how repeated thinking forms neural pathways in the brain. If you have battled fear, rejection, anxiety, sickness, depression, negative labels, or a medical diagnosis that feels like it has become your identity, this teaching will help you break agreement with destructive words and begin speaking life. Kathy explains why believers must stop confessing ownership over sickness, fear, and mental torment and instead align their words with faith, healing, peace, and the truth of who they are in Christ. You will learn how to rebuke word curses, break agreement with diagnosis-based identity, renew your mind, and speak biblical truth over your body and brain. This message is filled with practical encouragement, deliverance insight, and faith-filled activation to help you move from fear to faith and from negative patterns into healing. #WordCurses #RenewYourMind #HealingPrayer #PowerOfWords #KathyDeGraw **Connect with Us** - Website: https://www.kathydegrawministries.org/ - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kathydegraw/ - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kathydegraw/ Podcast - Subscribe to our YouTube channel and listen to Kathy's Podcast called Prophetic Spiritual Warfare, or on Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/show/3mYPPkP28xqcTzdeoucJZu or Apple podcasts at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/prophetic-spiritual-warfare/id1474710499 **Recommended Resources:** - Receive a free prayer pdf on The Power of your Words at https://www.kathydegrawministries.org/declarations-download/ - Receive a free prayer pdf on Anointing Oil at https://www.kathydegrawministries.org/anointingoil/ - Kathy's training, mentoring and e-courses on Spiritual Warfare, Deliverance and the Prophetic: https://training.kathydegrawministries.org/ - Healed At Last ~ Overcome Sickness and Receive your Physical Healing: https://www.kathydegrawministries.org/healed-at-last/ - Mind Battles – Root Out Mental Triggers to Release Peace!: https://www.kathydegrawministries.org/product/mind-battles-pre-order-available-january-2023/ -Kathy has several books available on Amazon or kathydegrawministries.org **Support Kathy DeGraw Ministries:** - Give a one-time love offering or consider partnering with us for $15, $35, $75 or any amount! Today on the Daily Nugget, Mike explores Galatians 3:10–14 and the contrast between living under the law and living by faith. Paul reminds us that the law cannot bring blessing because no one can perfectly keep it; instead, it exposes our need for God's grace. When we make rule-keeping and performance our focus, we often lose the joy, freedom, and love that flow from a relationship with God. The good news is that Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law so that we might receive God's blessing through faith. Join us as we discover why a life centered on God's grace is far richer than a life centered on our own efforts.
Every choice you make is leading you toward life or away from it, so choose the path that brings God's blessing.
Curses! Well, cursed belongings is our topic in The Reading Room tonight! A pretty silver vase that killed the bride it was gifted to. An ancient female figurine that's rumored to have been deadly since forever...and some bedazzlingly dangerous jewels, The Dubious Delhi Purple Sapphire and The Hopeless Hope Diamond. Please find your favorite, totally not cursed spot!Special Thanks to Sounds Like an Earful Music Supply for the amazing music AND sound design.
Four eerie tales of gothic horror and betrayal unfold tonight. A desert archaeological dig uncovers fresh horror instead of ancient history. Then Owl Creek Bridge becomes a nightmare of illusion, escape, and doom. Witchcraft, stagecraft, and murder collide in flames and suspicion. Finally, The Whistler arrives with a crime story where the cleverest plan may already be waiting to betray you. Expert narration. Immersive darkness. Spine-tingling twists.

For twenty-five years, Janet Wishart let all of Aberdeen believe she was a witch — until the day the authorities finally decided to find out what she was capable of admitting under questioning.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources and full transcript): https://weirddarkness.com/AberdeenWitchFEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: Janet Wishart loved practicing her evil Satanic magic – and equally loved boasting about it; something you really shouldn't do if you happen to live in the days of the Great Scottish Witch Hunt. (Janet Wisharts's Witchy Ways) *** Have you ever seen the movie “Going In Style” about some retired elderly men deciding to do one last robbery just to see if they had the stuff? Whether you watched the 1979 original or the 2017 remake, the premise is hilarious and fun. But apparently several men in 2015 decided to do it for real – and almost walked away with $200-million in cash and jewels! (The Grandpa Gang Jewel Robbery) *** The encounter of Gerry Anderson is one of the most intriguing claims of alien abduction in the United Kingdom. Not least as he wouldn't fully recall the incident that occurred in the early 1950s when he was a 12-year-old boy until decades later under hypnotic regression. (The Alien Abduction of Gerry Anderson) *** In November, 1980 the MGM Grand in Las Vegas caught fire, claiming numerous lives. Decades later we learn what went wrong, how it can be avoided in the future, and we hear the haunting details of what happened during the fire – as well as the hauntings that are taking place even now so many years later. It's a must-read that every person, religious and non-religious, should buy and peruse every night before bed. It'll make you think harder, pray more ardently, and understand your civilization better." — Ben Shapiro, host of "The Ben Shapiro Show" "Dennis Prager's commentary on Exodus will rank among the greatest modern Torah commentaries. That is how important I think it is. And I am clearly not alone... It might well be on its way to becoming the most widely read Torah commentary of our time—and by non-Jews as well as by Jews." — Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, bestselling author of Jewish Literacy Why do so many people think the Bible, the most influential book in world history, is outdated? Why do our friends and neighbors – and sometimes we ourselves – dismiss the Bible as irrelevant, irrational, immoral, or all of these things? This explanation of the Book of Exodus, the second book of the Bible, will demonstrate that the Bible is not only powerfully relevant to today's issues, but completely consistent with rational thought. Do you think the Bible permitted the trans-Atlantic slave trade? You won't after reading this book. Do you struggle to love your parents? If you do, you need this book. Do you doubt the existence of God because belief in God is “irrational?” This book will give you reason after reason to rethink your doubts. The title of this commentary is, “The Rational Bible” because its approach is entirely reason-based. The reader is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. As Prager says, “If something I write does not make rational sense, I have not done my job.” The Rational Bible is the fruit of Dennis Prager's forty years of teaching the Bible to people of every faith, and no faith. On virtually every page, you will discover how the text relates to the contemporary world and to your life. His goal: to change your mind – and then change your life. Highly Recommended by ACU. Purchase his book at- https://www.amazon.com/Rational-Bible-Exodus-Dennis-Prager/dp/1621577724 The Rational Bible: Genesis by Dennis Prager USA Today bestseller Publishers Weekly bestseller Wall Street Journal bestseller Many people today think the Bible, the most influential book in world history, is not only outdated but irrelevant, irrational, and even immoral. This explanation of the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, demonstrates clearly and powerfully that the opposite is true. The Bible remains profoundly relevant—both to the great issues of our day and to each individual life. It is the greatest moral guide and source of wisdom ever written. Do you doubt the existence of God because you think believing in God is irrational? This book will give you many reasons to rethink your doubts. Do you think faith and science are in conflict? You won't after reading this commentary on Genesis. Do you come from a dysfunctional family? It may comfort you to know that every family discussed in Genesis was highly dysfunctional! The title of this commentary is “The Rational Bible” because its approach is entirely reason-based. The reader is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. In Dennis Prager's words, “If something I write is not rational, I have not done my job.” The Rational Bible is the fruit of Dennis Prager's forty years of teaching the Bible—whose Hebrew grammar and vocabulary he has mastered—to people of every faith and no faith at all. On virtually every page, you will discover how the text relates to the contemporary world in general and to you personally. His goal: to change your mind—and, as a result, to change your life. The Rational Bible: Deuteronomy: God, Blessings, and Curses by Dennis Prager Is the Bible, the most influential book in world history, still relevant? Why do people dismiss it as being irrelevant, irrational, immoral, or all of these things? This explanation of the Book of Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Bible, will demonstrate how it remains profoundly relevant - both to the great issues of our day and to each individual life. Do you doubt the existence of God because you think believing in God is irrational? This book will cause you to reexamine your doubts. The title of this commentary is The Rational Bible because its approach is entirely reason-based. The listener is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. In Dennis Prager's words, “If something I write is not rational, I have not done my job.” The Rational Bible is the fruit of Prager's forty years of teaching to people of every faith and no faith at all. In virtually every section, you will discover how the text relates to the contemporary world in general and to you on a personal level. His goal: to change your mind - and, as a result, to change your life.

Based on the episodes that you've heard in this series, then you're likely aware there are many stories of curses, superstitions, and creepy coincidences that have been interwoven into the fabric of the “Devil's Music.” Some are silly and a bit of a stretch, some are eerie, and some – like the most famous music curse of the “27 Club” – are downright unnerving. In this episode, we'll dig into the infamous “Buddy Holly Curse,” which began on a fateful night in February 1959 – the “Day the Music Died.” Legend has it that this curse dogged an entire generation of rock stars connected to Buddy Holly. Is it truth or fiction?Curses and superstitions are not taken lightly in the music world. But I'll leave it up to you to decide if the frightening things that occurred were the supernatural at work, mere coincidence, or the result of that famous rock-n-roll adage of “living fast and leaving a good-looking corpse behind.” Our Sponsors:* Check out Shopify: https://shopify.com/hauntingsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
What happens when deliverance ministry stops being theory and becomes a direct confrontation with darkness? In this episode, Mike Brewer shares the encounters that thrust him into a life of deliverance ministry, from his first shocking confrontation with a demon in an Applebee's parking lot to learning how trauma, occult involvement, bloodline agreements, and hidden spiritual strongholds can keep people bound. Mike walks through the moments that shaped his ministry, including violent manifestations, demonic resistance, supernatural intervention, and the hard-won lessons that taught him deliverance is not about hype, fear, or performance, but about loving people enough to fight for their freedom. As the conversation unfolds, Mike explains how God trained him through real-life encounters, why some deliverances require deeper discernment, and how his ministry has expanded from local sessions in East Tennessee to churches and nations around the world. His stories reveal a sobering reality: the spiritual realm is far more complex than many realize, but the authority of Jesus is greater than every curse, kingdom, and demonic assignment. Please pray for Tony's wife, Lindsay, as she battles breast cancer.
