Two of our favorite and most frequent guests over the years have been independent citizen journalist Michael Yon (michaelyon-online.com) and Bruce McQuain from QandO.net and the #1 milblog Blackfive.net. He's also the man behind the Someone You Should Know series (http://www.punditreview.com/category/someone-you-should-know/). When I have Michael on, I always invite Bruce because of his decades of experience in the Army. Tonight, when Michael made a comment about the reasons surrounding the rules of engagement, Bruce was there with an understanding of the implications for the soldiers carrying our those rules. We caught up with Michael in Hong Kong where he welcomed the New Year. He was heading to the airport for home to the U.S. for a little rest and recovery. Michael has spent the past five years covering the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq like no other. He estimated spending about half of that time reporting from the front lines both embedded with military units and freelance, on his own. (I would add from some of the nastiest places on the planet, from the mountains of Afghanistan to the streets of Mosil). (http://www.punditreview.com/category/michael-yon/). Michael is truly independent. His work is supported by his readers. I made a donation recently becuase I value what he is doing. As we do every Sunday at 9pm, we welcomed Bruce McQuain from QandO.net and the number one milblog Blackfive.net back to the show. Before we got to this weekend's edition of SYSK, we spent a few weeks chatting about the week that was. We discussed Obama's decision to reverse himself on releasing the so-called "torture photos" and on the use of military tribunals. Yes, he flip-flopped, but what is most important is that he landed in the right place. Unfortunately for Obama, his wise eversals were completely overshadowed by San Fran Nan and amateur hour press conference where she accused the CIA of regularly lying to Congress. Pelosi was left to twist in the wind by not only her number 2, Steney Hoeyer, who said "he did not reach that conclusion" about CIA briefings. CIA Director Panetta didn't just throw her under the bus, he backed it up and ran over her again for good measue. Most importantly, President Obama left Pelosi twisting and alone. Only a media that loses interest in the story can save Pelosi now. Odds of that happening, 50-50. What is Pundit Review Radio? Pundit Review Radio is where the old media meets the new. Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. Tonight, Bruce told us about Staff Sgt. Luis Rosa-Valentin. The following comes from the Killeen Daily Herald, "Luis Rosa-Valentin got something Tuesday morning he’s wanted since arising from a coma nearly a year ago. “Sgt. Rosa! Rejoin your formation!” Steadied by a friend, he rose from his wheelchair and stepped onto the brown grass toward 200 uniformed soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team. Excited chattering came to a halt as heads turned and a knowing silence fell over the crowd. This audience knew what was happening. People were more than willing to forgo their reunions for a few minutes so one soldier could have his. Staff Sgt. Luis Rosa-Valentin was there to check on his guys." The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. Bruce McQuain from QandO does an incredible job with the series every week. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. Tonight Bruce told us how 10 Special Foces soldiers earned Silver Stars in a single battle. "About 100 Special Forces and Afghan soldiers each were carrying more than 60 pounds of equipment when they jumped from helicopters onto icy, jagged rocks and waist-deep running water in 30-degree temperatures on April 6 to assault a terrorist stronghold in Afghanistan. Seven hours later, the members of Special Forces A-Team 3336 would have encountered a tenacious enemy in the Shok Valley and earned 10 Silver Stars, the Army’s third highest award for combat valor. The award of a single Silver Star is considered a significant combat decoration. The 12-man A-team is the basic fighting unit of Special Forces. …“If you saw it in a movie, you’d shake your head and say it couldn’t happen,” Lt. Gen. John F. Bruce McQuain from QandO joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce is a veteran of the Vietnam war and spent 28 years in the U.S. Army. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. Dean Barnett and I welcomed Bruce who talked about Marine Sergeant Jeff Hunter, “I honestly don’t believe I did anything all that heroic,” Sgt. Jeff Hunter told Military.com when asked about his Silver Star. He volunteered for Afghanistan in order to make a positive difference in the lives of others. While some people talk about that, he did it. And when confronted with a man who would destroy all the good he had labored so hard to help build, he valorously took action which assured that didn’t happen. That’s why SSG Jason Fetty of Joint Provisional Reconstruction Team Khost, pharmacist, reservist, patriot and recipient of the Silver Star is someone you should know." Bruce McQuain from QandO joined me last night and we discussed, among other things, the selection of Sarah Palin. Bruce, like me, was not bowled over at first. Then he watched her introductory press conference and saw the groundswell of support for the pick. We discussed how this changes the game, and how it is driving the liberals crazy. Bruce is a veteran of the Vietnam war and spent 28 years in the U.S. Army. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. It is so great to have him as part of the show. Last night, Bruce told us about CPL Moses Cardenas, "Al Anbar province, Iraq. Once one of the most deadly places on earth for US Soldiers and Marines is scheduled to be turned over to the Iraqi government soon because it has become a place of relative calm and peace. Things are beginning to bloom and work there. That is the case due to no small effort by Marines and Soldiers who have fought and died there over the past few years." Tonight I’d like to tell you about a young Marine who not only saved a life and by doing so gave his new born daughter the ultimate gift.
