Send us a textMarket turbulence has the metal building industry on edge, but is the panic justified? In this revealing episode, Steel Kings Jared Ledford and Eric Olson cut through the noise surrounding steel tariffs and economic uncertainty to deliver practical insights that matter to dealers and manufacturers. From his hotel room in snowy Amarillo (yes, snowy Texas in April!), Eric shares how he's turning an unexpected challenge – a customer's too-visible display building attracting constant visitors – into a strategic opportunity by establishing a satellite office. Meanwhile, Jared reflects on their surprisingly strong March sales despite economic headwinds, drawing parallels to their experiences during COVID when building sales thrived against all predictions. The hosts tackle steel tariffs head-on, offering contrasting perspectives on their long-term impact. While Jared anticipates price increases, Eric believes the initial shock exceeds the reality – highlighting that most new customers have no reference point for "normal" pricing anyway. Their candid discussion reveals how manufacturers are already reducing discounts, creating challenges for dealers accustomed to promotional pricing strategies. What makes this episode particularly valuable are the actionable tactics shared from the trenches. Eric reveals how simply relocating Facebook advertisements to different zip codes instantly revitalized his lead generation, while Jared emphasizes the critical importance of customer qualification and timeline assessment. Their strongest advice? Stop apologizing for prices and never undermine your product's value – instead, confidently explain quality differences and stand behind your offerings "like the Rock of Gibraltar."The conversation culminates with a passionate reminder that success in this industry requires genuine enthusiasm and commitment. As Jared puts it, "If you don't love metal buildings and wood sheds, leave it to somebody who does."Ready to weather the market storm and potentially turn uncertainty into opportunity? Send us a textWhat happens when a banker makes a U-turn on the interstate after a failed business meeting? For Joel Oney of J Money and the team at Dayton Barns, it sparked a partnership that generated nearly $5 million in additional sales over just three years. The latest Steel Kings podcast brings listeners inside this remarkable business relationship as hosts Jared Ledford and Eric Olson welcome Joel and Katy from J Money—the official studio sponsors making the podcast possible. Their story demonstrates how financing solutions specifically tailored for metal buildings have transformed the industry and created opportunities that would have otherwise been impossible.Joel shares how his 25 years of banking experience led him to recognize a critical gap in the market: customers with good credit seeking affordable financing options for buildings over $25,000 needed something better than traditional rent-to-own programs. The solution? A comprehensive financing platform offering paperless applications, instant pre-qualification, and multiple payment options that salespeople can present without collecting sensitive customer information. The results speak for themselves. Eric describes completing an entire sales process with an Arizona customer in just 90 minutes over the phone—from introduction to credit approval to signed contract. Another example shows how financing turned what might have been a $20,000 cash purchase into a $35,000 building because customers focus on the monthly payment, not the total price.Beyond business strategies, the conversation reveals a deeper truth about success: "singular moments create lifetime results." Each participant shares how stepping outside their comfort zone—making that U-turn, introducing themselves to a stranger at a banquet, or being open to new partnerships—led to transformative opportunities that changed their businesses and lives.Ready to implement financing solutions that could revolutionize your metal building or shed sales? This was the sixth test launch of the Starship vehicle, which could eventually carry humans and cargo to the moon. It was extremely loud. Also, divers have recovered seeds of a long-lost rye variety from a 146-year-old shipwreck in Lake Huron. Scientists hope to bring it back to life.SpaceX's Starship Completes In-Orbit Engine TestOn Tuesday, the rocket company SpaceX conducted another test flight of its Starship spacecraft. In the uncrewed mission, the sixth test of the system, the company was seeking to test its ability to restart the Starship engines while in orbit, a function that's necessary for in-space maneuvering. The rocket did launch successfully, and the engine test worked. However, at the last minute the company elected not to try to repeat an October maneuver in which it caught a returning SuperHeavy rocket booster at the launch tower, citing safety concerns.SciFri's Charles Bergquist joins guest host Kathleen Davis to talk about the launch, and related research into the tremendous sound created by the system's launch and reentry. They also discuss other stories from the week in science, including the discovery of a saber-toothed kitten in Siberian permafrost, efforts to use light to help destroy PFAS chemicals, a company using Pokemon Go game data to train an AI, and more.Michigan-Based Team To Resuscitate Shipwrecked Rye SeedsIn 1878, a wooden schooner named the James R. Bentley set sail from Chicago to Buffalo, New York. But strong winds and rough waters damaged the ship, and it sank to the bottom of Lake Huron. The crew was saved, but the ship's cargo—a large shipment of rye—sank with it. In the years since the shipwreck, that particular variety of rye has faded out of existence. Now, almost 150 years later, a Michigan-based team is trying to bring the long-lost rye back to life. They dove to the shipwreck, retrieved a tube full of seeds, and are planning to use gene technology to recreate the rye variety. Their goal is to encourage farmers to grow it, so that distillers can use it to make whiskey.SciFri producer Kathleen Davis talks with Dr. Eric Olson, professor of wheat breeding and genetics at Michigan State University, and Chad Munger, founder and CEO of Mammoth Distilling.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Eric Olson, COO and Founder of BetterWay™ by Babson Diagnostics™, reports that traditional blood testing is often seen as inconvenient and unpleasant, causing 40% of people to avoid needed blood tests. Babson has developed a more patient-friendly approach to blood collection using a device that fits on the finger and requires a minimum amount of blood. The BetterWay service allows patients or doctors to order tests where blood is drawn at a local pharmacy and samples analyzed at a central lab, providing a quick turnaround with understandable test results.  Eric explains, "Blood testing is something that most people are very familiar with. It's a routine part of medical care. Every time you go in for your annual visit or if you're monitoring a disease, maybe a chronic disease, you might get tested more frequently than once a year. The experience is something that a lot of people go through, which consists of having an appointment, going into some sort of patient service center, and getting blood drawn by a professional phlebotomist. They put a needle in your vein and use tubes to pull the blood out of the vein. They fill up multiple tubes of blood that get sent to a high-throughput laboratory that looks a bit like a factory for testing." "If you go to BetterWay.com, you can see the full menu and the prices of all the tests on that menu, so there are no surprise bills. Insurance, FSA, and HSA are accepted. However, the cash pay prices are often lower than many people pay, even with insurance, due to copays and deductibles, which are very high for many people." "So once you've got an order, you go to your local retail pharmacy to get your blood collected. We're available in pharmacies in Austin today, on all sides of Austin, and expanding beyond Austin soon. Once you arrive at the pharmacy, you tell them that you're there for the BetterWay test. They'll collect a pea-sized blood sample from your fingertip after putting your hand on a hand warmer. And that enables them to collect either one or two tubes of blood, depending on the tests you've ordered, instead of large vials of blood from a needle in your vein." #BetterWay #BabsonDiagnostics #BloodTesting #HealthEcosystem #MedicalDeviceDevelopments BetterWay.com Download the transcript here

In the Public Interest is pleased to continue our miniseries examining landmark decisions recently issued by the United States Supreme Court. Our third episode focuses on the Court's decision in 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis, a case concerning whether a Christian website designer has a First Amendment right to refuse to design wedding websites for same-sex couples. In this episode, co-host John Walsh explores the 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis decision with Eric Olson, former Solicitor General of the state of Colorado, who argued the case in front of the Court. Olson and Walsh delve into the history of other Supreme Court cases where Colorado businesses have claimed a First Amendment right to refuse services to same-sex couples. Olson shares his unique, first-hand perspective on the scope of the core legal questions the Court addressed in its majority opinion. They also analyze notable points in the dissenting opinion issued by Justice Sonia Sotomayor and what the Court's decision in this case may mean for the fight for LGBTQ+ rights in the United States.

In recent years, the authoritarian Ortega-Murillo regime has consolidated power, systematically dismantled organized opposition, and brutally cracked down on public protests. To push back against the regime, the United States has deployed sanctions, on individuals, entities, and state-owned companies, as well as directed its executive directors at multilateral lending institutions to oppose financing to Managua. These measures remain insufficient to place genuine pressure on the regime, however, and a more muscular sanctions architecture is in order as the Nicaraguan regime continues to run roughshod over human rights and presents a geopolitical threat the United States.   In this episode, Ryan C. Berg sits down with Eric Olson, Director of Policy and Strategic Initiatives for the Seattle International Foundation. Together, they assess the current state of U.S. sanctions against Nicaragua, as well as future directions for bringing pressure against the regime. They also evaluate the risks inherent in a sanctions campaign, and how to balance between denying revenues to the regime and preserving the livelihoods of Nicaraguan citizens, as well as avoiding exacerbating already serious migration flows from Nicaragua.

If you've noticed the proliferation of fake news and advertising over the past 7 years, you're not the only one! Part of the problem is that all "free" search engines and social media companies are, at heart, advertising platforms. So your top results will be whoever paid the most, not necessarily the best results.Today's guest, Eric Olson, is trying to change that with Consensus, a search engine that returns evidence-based results. Instead of wading through ads for pharmaceuticals and links to questionable science, you can get the actual facts quickly and easily. We talk about fake news, the limitations of free, ad-based search engines, and how and why Eric came to develop Consensus. You'll hear some real world examples of how I used Consensus to get the information I needed on dosages of the anti-inflammatory supplements my doctor recommended I take for a knee injury, and learn how you can use Consensus to get the best information for working with your Pilates clients or understanding scientific research on any issue.About Eric:Eric Olson is a talented data science professional with a Master's in Predictive Analytics from Northwestern University. Before Consensus, Eric worked at the sports entertainment company DraftKings, where he was an Analytics Specialist building predictive machine learning models to understand the user base better. Eric came up with the idea for Consensus after spending years as a die-hard amateur science consumer and wanting access to better evidence-based information at the click of a button.Eric formerly was a three-year starter for the Northwestern University Football team, is an avid skier, loves the outdoors, and hopes to convince NFL coaches someday never to punt again.Links:Website - https://consensus.app/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/consensus-nlp/Twitter - https://twitter.com/ConsensusNLPMusic by Nerd SaladLove the podcast? The vast majority of published scientific literature and new research is hidden behind paywalls. Worse, what few accessible papers available online are oftentimes written in jargon, i.e., specialist language that can alienate non-expert readers.Combined, these two issues make it difficult for researchers, scientists, and even entrepreneurs to build on new discoveries and for members of the public to access credible, peer-reviewed literature in the age of misinformation. The good news is, natural language processing-based startups are working to change the conversation around access to scientific knowledge in impactful ways. One such startup is Consensus, an AI-powered search engine designed to provide users a view into what the research says with the click of a button. In this episode, host Adam Gamwell is joined by Consensus CEO Eric Olson to talk about the company's inception, the promise and new waves of natural language processing technology, and how Consensus is making scientific findings accessible and consumable for all.Show Highlights:[04:08] How Eric Olson got into natural language processing[06:15] How tech can help users know what information to trust online[08:10] The difference between giving good information and giving engaging information[10:32] How Consensus attempts to disrupt the global search industry[13:50] The current state of search[15:32] How Consensus approaches partnerships[17:07] On the size of Consensus' corpus[19:59] How natural language processing is evolving[21:19] How Consensus fine-tunes its AI system[24:53] On using AI generators to write papers[26:47] How search platforms like Consensus can be built in a way that's usable for laypeople[30:32] Why context in AI is important[33:05] The three things that differentiate Consensus from existing search engines[39:37] What's next for NLP-based technologies as a whole[41:14] What's next for Consensus[43:10] On the hypothesis that AI can't replace subjective, art-based roles[46:12] Closing statementsLinks and Resources:Check out ConsensusSubscribe to This Anthro Life's newsletterConnect with Adam via emailConnect with Adam via the This Anthro Life website
