Soon, we will mark 22 years since the September 11 horrific attack on America. My guest on this episode is leading an event honoring 9/11 heroes and the soldiers that have died fighting in wars since then. And this veteran is also rucking his way to better mental health. After I give a quick recap of my new (fastest) 5K PR at a midnight race, then what Tim Tebow told myself and a crowd in GA, (6:00) we get to know SSG (Ret) Lee Rollins! He talks about where he was - as a young soldier - on September 11, 2001...eventually deploying to Iraq, Afghanistan which "changes your soul." (13:17) We discuss how he and you can help veterans and Gold Star families (who've lost a loved one in military service) through organizations like the Travis Manion Foundation. That's the beneficiary of a 9/11 heroes 5K run happening all around the nation on Saturday morning September 9, including in Columbus GA (Chattahoochee Valley). You can register now to help with youth programs, especially Gold Star family members: https://www.travismanion.org/events/911-heroes-run/2023-chattahoochee-valley/. (22:38) Travis Manion, the marine LT killed in Iraq, was known for saying "If not me, then who." Lee talks about being proactive, inspiring each other, doing acts of kindness - like Travis. A big passion for this pod guest is (25:12) rucking, good cardio and mental challenge for this veteran who had an injury that forced him into medical retirement. Walking or hiking with that ruck sack is like therapy for him and other vets, but you got to do it the correct way to avoid inury! He's a part or regular group rucks in East Alabama and West Georgia. (37:40) Lee also is focused, on and off his job, to help veterans transition from military to civilian life, especially with getting jobs and their mental health. He talks about what he does through Work for Warriors Georgia, with some inspiring stories! (45:58) And is this retured US Army sniper school instructor...still a good shot? Shooting/hunting, fishing, rucking, other sports and hobbies are also a great way to bond, he says, through tough times of grief and PTSD. (54:10) I close out the episode with a prayer for our military and more. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. 29APR2007: Serving as an advisor to the newly formed Iraqi Army, 1stLt Travis Manion set out on patrol into the ever volatile city of Fallujah, Iraq. Shortly into the mission, an enemy sniper opened fire and hit and critically injured the unit's corpsman. 1stLt Manion quickly moved out and pulled the wounded Marine to cover. Just then, a second Marine was wounded by the same sniper. Again pulling him to cover, 1stLt Manion recognized they were in for a fight. That's when the enemy opened fire from multiple locations, suppressing the Marines with accurate rifle and machine gun fire. As they continued to treat the wounded, 1stLt Manion took action to ensure the enemy couldn't maneuver on their position. Exposing himself to enemy fire, he laid down fire in all directions to keep the enemy at bay. As the supporting Iraqi forces hit an IED that stalled their advance, the insurgents were able to mass on 1stLt Manion and his position. As insurgent elements appeared on the rooftops overhead, 1stLt Manion moved from position to position to gain a better firing position as well as to draw fire away from the wounded Marines. As he was doing so, he was struck and killed by a an enemy sniper. For his selfless acts that day in working to save the lives of his fellow Marines, 1stLt Travis Manion would be posthumously awarded the Silver Star. As mentioned in the show, check out the Travis Manion Foundation.

Ryan Manion has dedicated her life to supporting our nation's military, veterans, and families of fallen heroes. She is inspired by the character, leadership, and sacrifice of her brother 1st Lt Travis Manion, USMC, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Al Anbar province of Iraq while drawing fire away from his wounded comrades on April 29th, 2007. Ryan is the co-author of the newly released book, The Knock at the Door, Three Gold Star Families Bonded by Grief and Purpose. Serving as the President of Travis Manion Foundation since 2012, Ryan leads a national movement focused on assisting veterans and families of the fallen to take the next step in their personal journeys and inspiring the next generation of leaders. As a highly regarded advocate for the military community, Ryan has been invited to address national audiences on numerous occasions—including Good Morning America, CBS this Morning, CNN, The Today Show, Fox News and many more. Carrying on the legacy of her brother Travis, Ryan continues to lead a life of service to others. This was most notably recognized in 2015 when she was selected to receive the President's Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteer Service. Ryan served on the Advisory Committee at Arlington National Cemetery and remains committed to their mission. As a leader in the Veteran Non-Profit sector, Ryan serves on the Advisory Boards of the Global War on Terror Memorial Foundation and With Honor. Some additional accolades include: ● 2018 Bush Institute Stand-To Veteran Leadership Fellow ● 2018 Sage Foundation Charity Pioneer ● 2017 United States Naval Academy Honorary Graduate ● 2016 HillVets 100 list ● 2014 Joseph D. Helton, Jr. Award for Leadership ● 2013 Hillier (Ignite) Warrior for Warriors Award Ryan resides in Doylestown, PA with her husband and three children, Maggie Rose, Honor and Travis Brendan. Ryan continues to serve her local community by serving as a Township Supervisor since elected in 2011. While responsibilities of this position are focused on deciding issues of public safety, growth management, environment, etc., Ryan most appreciates the personal connection with those within the community she is able to directly serve. The Interview Highlights Ryan worked alongside her mother, Janet, at the Travis Manion Foundation for approximately 18 months before her mother passed away. The board of directors for the foundation then appointed Ryan President of the organization. Talk about big shoes to fill! To help her fill her mom's shoes, Ryan hired really smart people to work alongside her. She is very humble and doesn't take credit for the organization but gives all credit to her mom for laying a foundation for success. The organization supports military veterans and their families. So many people want to give and serve and honor the men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country. The Hero's Run, which was started as a grassroots effort with approximately 500 people participating, now occurs in 90 places across the world with more than 70,000 people showing up to run and support first responders and veterans. Robyn ran the 1st Hero's run with her daughter in the jogging stroller and remembers the passion and emotions associated with the event. One of the reasons Ryan wrote the book, “The Knock at the Door” was to show the real side of her. She is in the public eye a lot and appears to be so strong, not shedding tears for her brother, Travis or her the loss of her mom. People asked her how she does it and as a result of all of the questions she wanted to tell her story and her journey. Ryan and her co-authors, Amy and Heather wanted to show that their stories didn't end with the knock at the door. Their stories were just beginning. Ryan believes that setting goals to get through each day after a major life event occurs is key. Setting small goals and thinking about today and not next year is important. It helps to think about tomorrow but no further into the future. When you go through a traumatic event or loss you have to set small goals at first. Setting intentional goals is the key. One has to be comfortable with the fact that life is not a sprint. And it's important to remember that failure is a bruise, not a tattoo. It's the little failures that have the power to set us back, so mindset is important. Each day is a new day and an opportunity to be the best we can be. Tomorrow is a new day to turn the setbacks around. When we realize that life is a series of successes and failures and that a success is just around the corner, the failures and setbacks don't hurt as bad. The best way to honor those we've lost is to not give up but be the best version of ourselves. The Travis Manion Foundation is an empowerment organization. The organization helps provide opportunities for men and women who served in the military to help educate our youth on the importance of character and gives an opportunity for continued service, even without their uniforms. Fifty-five percent of veterans say they feel disconnected to community when they return to civilian life. Through the program, volunteers have talked to more than 350,000 students across the US. One third of kids do not have a positive role model or, example, of good character in their lives. The veteran volunteers can positively influence the children to become men and women of good character. Losing a family member or someone you love is the most devastating thing that can happen to a person. You are left with grief that you have absolutely no control over. I grieve for my dad every single day and think about him constantly. It is a pain I know I will have for the rest of my life. When you lose someone you love, your life changes immediately. Ryan Manion is helping others navigate their new lives of grief. She has dedicated her life to supporting our nation’s military, veterans, and families of fallen heroes. She is inspired by the character, leadership, and sacrifice of her brother 1st Lt. Travis Manion, USMC, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Al Anbar province of Iraq while drawing fire away from his wounded comrades on April 29th, 2007. Ryan is here to talk all about grief, The Travis Manion Foundation and her heartfelt new book, “The Knock at the Door: Three Gold Star Families Bonded by Grief and Purpose.” I was so inspired and comforted by our conversation. I hope you are too. Everyone grieves differently, but we all need strong support and love to move forward. Honored to have Ryan Manion on The Protectors w/Jason Piccolo. Ryan and I discussed her book, understanding grief, the Travis Manion Foundation, and living in New Jersey. Ryan is a true inspiration. The book, The Knock at the Door: Three Gold Star Families Bonded by Grief and Purpose, is available now wherever books are sold. About the Book: This book is for anyone who has ever received a knock at the door. And if you live long enough and have the courage to love others, you will. Maybe it's a cancer diagnosis. Maybe it's the death of your best friend. The betrayal of a spouse. The loss of a child. The implosion of a professional career. Or any tragedy that takes the person we love the most away from us too soon. Life is not without its challenges. The key is how you respond. This is our story. The story of three women, bonded by grief and purpose. Grief because we lost our best friends in war. Purpose because we resolved — together — to do something about it. To turn loss into inspiration for others and to channel the love that we had for the men in our lives into love for others through service. It was the only way we could escape the trap of despair and inaction, and we believe it offers a roadmap for anyone else who has ever had to answer a knock at the door.Ryan on Instagram: @rmanion Travis Manion Foundation: @travismanionfoundation Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprotectors)

Bruce McQuain from QandO joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce is a veteran of the Vietnam war and spent 28 years in the U.S. Army. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. This week Bruce told us of a story he learned through blogger Bill Ardolino at INDC Journal. This is the story of 1LT Travis Manion, "A Naval Academy graduate and former nationally-ranked wrestler, he served with a Military Transition Team advising an Iraqi Army battalion and went on the raid I wrote about here. He was a friendly guy, and prior to the operation, I had a conversation with him about the war, wrestling and Annapolis. I can’t say I knew him well, but I did find it amazing at the time that we have guys like him, with such intellect, drive and options, who choose to put themselves in harm’s way and serve their country." The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. Bruce McQuain from QandO does an incredible job with the series every week. What is Pundit Review Radio? Pundit Review Radio is where the old media meets the new. Each week we give voice to the work of the most influential leaders in the new media/citizen journalist revolution. Called “groundbreaking” by Talkers Magazine, this unique show brings the best of the blogs to your radio every Sunday evening from 7-10 pm EST on AM680 WRKO, Boston’s Talk Station.
