The sergeant told me to come back when I was heavier. So I went home, ate all the bananas I could find, and stuffed five pounds’ worth into my pockets before stepping on that scale again. I passed. We were trained to land first, fight behind enemy lines, and take the beaches nobody else could reach. From Guadalcanal to New Georgia, from the jungles of the Solomons to the black sand of Iwo Jima, we fought to free the Pacific. On Guam, I was stabbed in the stomach during hand-to-hand combat. On Iwo Jima, I was hit by machine-gun fire and knocked unconscious. Both times, my men thought I was gone. Somehow, I wasn’t. When I came to, I saw the flag rising on Mount Suribachi.

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2026 13:15

This week, Corporal, Fatty and Banky get together to talk about a social media post regarding someone overdoing it on an edible and the comments section really nailing them for it.  This reminded Fatty of a YouTube video of an elderly woman who can walk you through being too lifted.  They also discuss a message Fatty sent to the group about not being able to understand the physics of roller skating due to his lack of athletic abilities once you put wheels on his feet.   Banky and Corporal suggest ways of incorporating Fatty using skates in a their Fatical Training series of videos.  They also discuss movies they've watched recently including Greenland 2, Project Hail Mary, Hiding Out and more before remembering some of the classics and not so classic comedies of the 80's they grew up on. THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta Brad (Rory Cochrane), an out-of-work musician, is home by himself one morning while his wife, Lexi (Mary McCormack), is at work. He hears on the radio that several suspected dirty bombs have been detonated across Los Angeles, and sees large amounts of smoke rising from the city. Brad tries to contact Lexi through her cell phone, but only receives a busy signal, and when he tries to drive out to find her, he discovers that all roads now have police blockades, forcing him to return home. Once home, Brad sees Alvaro (Tony Perez), in the house. Alvaro asks Brad if he can stay with him as there is no one at the neighbor's house where he was working. Over the radio, they hear that survivors of the blasts are being quarantined due to the bombs' deadly toxins, and that the authorities advise people to seal up their homes before the toxins reach them. Brad and Alvaro then proceed to seal up the house with duct tape and plastic. As it becomes increasingly obvious that Lexi might not come home, he takes some of Lexi's clothes and leaves them outside the back door with some food and water. Lexi arrives home, covered in dust from the explosions, causing Brad to refuse to let her in. Lexi loses her temper and throws her cell phone at one of the door panes, breaking it. Brad and Alvaro quickly seal the breakage and manage to calm Lexi down, before then sealing off the main bedroom from the rest of the house so that Lexi can get into it. Lexi receives a call from her mother, who realizes that she was near the explosion and is probably infected, but Lexi refuses to believe that there is any danger. Alvaro decides to leave the house, saying he needs to be with his wife. Brad tries to convince him to stay, but Alvaro leaves anyway and is seen slowly walking away through a downpour of toxic ash. Lexi hears a noise from the back and alerts Brad. A masked man appears, who introduces himself as Rick (Jon Huertas). He tells Lexi that there is a ship on the coast that has medical supplies and is helping people. Lexi and Rick leave for help, and Brad hears newscasts on the radio that elaborate on the unknown viral strain, saying it is a hybrid which attacks the respiratory system. That same night Brad is visited by Corporal Marshall (Max Kasch) and his men. He asks Brad several questions, such as how well his house has been sealed, who else is currently or recently been there, and if there has been any contact between him and anyone on the outside. Brad mentions the phone that Lexi threw the door window and the Corporal demands a sample of the dust off the phone. He tells Brad that he will soon be back with the results and that his wife under no circumstances should be let into the house. Lexi returns home the next day without Rick, and sees a red tag placed outside the house. She calls her brother, Jason, (Will McCormack) so that she can have someone to talk to due to her mother being frantic with worry. The next couple of hours are spent with Brad and Lexi on their respective sides of the door, who talk about what they will do assuming they survive. Suddenly, soldiers appear and grab Lexi, and prevent Brad from coming outside. One soldier manages to calm Brad down and explains that the virus has been discovered not to thrive in places with large quantities of fresh air, meaning that the number of fatalities from the attack has actually been minimal.

Leaders far smarter and more capable than Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth have started foreign wars that turned to quagmires. So in this regard they are not special. What’s different this time around is that incompetence prevails in every corner of this administration and the economic levers that are usually pulled to mitigate the domestic economic impact are no longer available to us. Seattle Mennonite Church Sermons

Both the cruelty and wondrousness of humans transcends time and space. As we read this terrible story (with great care!), it's imperative that we remember both of these things are true. May we remain eyes wide open about the complete betrayal of “We have no king but the emperor” both then and now. May we receive the miraculous gift of kinship with all who reserve allegiance for God alone; a God who is (liberating) love and whose way is (a just) peace.Sermon begins at minute marker 3:54Scripture: John 19.1-16aResources:BibleWorm podcast: Episode 732 - No King but the Emporer, Amy Robertson and Robert Williamson, Jr.ACLU press release: “Pentagon Releases 198 Photos Relating to Detainee Abuse in Long-Running ACLU Lawsuit,” February 5, 2016. Corporal Jim Lancia is (to the best of our knowledge) the only 56 guest to have been ambushed with a Tommy gun. He has so many tales of adventure and danger that he said getting stabbed under his vest during a domestic wasn't even a big deal compared to all the times he's been shot at. After years as a law enforcement officer in Pennsylvania, plus a stint training K-9s for Navy SEALs, he came to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. (He passed up on an offer from NASA SWAT, which means working at our agency is cooler than… er, fighting aliens? Or is that Space Force? We're really not sure.) While here, he's worked on the beaches and in the Marine Unit for a welcome change from snow and slush in the concrete jungle. Right now he's in the Training Division, keeping PCSO on the forefront of the most innovative technology, including our groundbreaking use of Virtual Reality. Hear about how he was first on scene at a mass shooting, how he put his life on the line for $5.25 an hour, and why he loved working with the beautiful chaos that is a Belgian Malinois. He says he's been shot at so many times that he shouldn't be here talking to us now, but his career shows that in police work, luck's not a tactic, but it's a very real thing.Email us your questions and suggestions at lets56@pcsonet.comFollow PCSO: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTubeFollow 56: InstagramPCSO Website

Is the freight market finally turning a corner, or are carriers in for more tough decisions ahead? James Currier from Finloc is back for another insightful conversation, covering why the freight market remains weak, how the worst job numbers since 2020 are slowing fleet expansion, and why economic uncertainty and high interest rates are forcing trucking companies to rethink equipment financing, capital spending, and operational strategy! We talk about the disconnect between Wall Street wins and Main Street trucking struggles, rising operating costs, why lenders are now laser-focused on stability, maintenance discipline, and financial transparency and why automation, smarter financial planning, and disciplined execution are the keys to surviving and winning in today's freight economy, especially for small and mid-sized fleets trying to stay competitive in a volatile trucking market. Nils Mockler joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17, only because they wouldn't let him join when he was 16. Upon enlisting in 1944, Mockler completed boot camp and was soon tapped as a combat intelligence scout. He also dabbled in explosives as you'll hear. After more training in Hawaii, Mockler and many other Marines left for Iwo Jima, where they would land in February 1945 and become part of one of the most vicious battles in the entire war.In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Mockler takes us on board his ship as the battle plans were opened up and military planners thought Iwo Jima wold be a two-day mission. He also shares his experience coming ashore on D+1 and the fierce Japanese resistance he and the other Marines faces. Mockler also describes the battle-hardened unit he was attached to, the apprehension of sitting in his foxhole through the night in anticipation of Japanese attacks, and watching the cemetery of American service members grow far beyond what the battle planners could have imagined. And he describes the exhiliration of watching the American flag raised atop Mount Suribachi.

Is the Word Cop an Insult or Offensive? In Defense of a Title Earned. Few words tied to law enforcement spark online arguments as quickly, or as emotionally, as the word cop. For some, it's an instant trigger. For others, it's harmless shorthand. But for many who have worn the badge, worked the streets, and answered the calls, cop is neither an insult nor a slur. It's a title of respect, earned through action, accountability, sacrifice, and service. This special episode is streaming for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and most every major Podcast platform That's why this conversation matters, and why a special episode of the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast was dedicated to defending the word “Cop.” Look for The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on social media like their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. Why One Word Creates Such Big Reactions. Ask ten people what comes to mind when they hear “cop,” and you'll likely get ten different answers. Online, the word ignites debate at lightning speed, often led by people with little to no firsthand connection to the profession itself. The disconnect is striking. Opinions about the word rarely come from the street, the squad car, or the midnight shift. They come from the outside looking in. Is the Word Cop an Insult or Offensive? In Defense of a Title Earned. Supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . As a retired Baltimore Police Sergeant, I use the word intentionally and unapologetically. Growing up in the job, cop was always a compliment. It was what fellow cops called you when they knew you were reliable, when they trusted you to show up, back them up, and do the work. It was never whispered as an insult or tossed around in a derogatory way. It was a term of respect shared among people who understood exactly what the job demanded. A Word Big Enough for the Whole Profession One of the greatest misconceptions about law enforcement is the idea that it's a single job with a single title. In reality, it's a massive profession made up of countless roles: Police Officers, Deputy Sheriffs, State Troopers, Highway Patrol, Game Wardens, Wildlife Officers, Park Rangers, Corrections Officers, Probation and Parole Officers, Federal Agents, and many more. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and other podcast platforms. Each agency has its own mission, culture, and rank structure: Officer, Agent, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Chief. Titles and ranks matter in this profession because they're earned. Technically, the most accurate way to address someone is by their full title. That's exactly where the word cop fits. It's universal. It cuts across agencies, uniforms, patches, and ranks without erasing them. Whether someone works urban streets, rural highways, a jail tier, or a federal task force, “cop” recognizes the shared commitment to a job most people wouldn't last a week doing. It acknowledges the brotherhood and sisterhood beneath the badges. Is the Word Cop an Insult or Offensive? What “Cop” Really Means on the Inside Among those who lived the job, being called a cop meant something very specific: you actually did the work. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. The uncomfortable truth is that not everyone who wears a badge lives up to that standard. Every agency has individuals who technically show up but avoid the real work whenever possible. They dodge hot calls, arrive late to dangerous scenes by choice, and stay “clean” by doing the bare minimum. Ironically, those are often the people who climb the promotional ladder the fastest, because staying invisible protects them from scrutiny. In the Baltimore Police Department, there was a word for officers like that: humps. They mastered the art of stretching simple calls into hour-long events, lingering in the station, and letting other officers absorb the risk. That behavior didn't just burden coworkers, it hurt the community by reducing real response and proactive policing. A cop, what our old-timers called “real police”, was different. A cop showed up. A cop backed their partners without hesitation. A cop stepped into chaos, took responsibility, and handled business when it mattered. The job wasn't about comfort, popularity, or fast promotions. It was about service and accountability. That's the standard behind the word. Is the Word Cop an Insult or Offensive? In Defense of a Title Earned. The Fake Outrage Over Language Every so often, usually on social media, someone erupts in outrage when I use the word cop. What's telling isn't just the anger, but where it's aimed. It's not about the crime. Not about the victim. Not about the officer injured or killed. It's about the word. That says everything. When a headline reads A COP WAS SHOT and someone ignores the violence to lecture about terminology, priorities are clearly misplaced. Fixating on language while glossing over criminal violence raises serious questions about motive and intent. Outrage over vocabulary is easy. Standing up for truth, accountability, and human life is much harder. Is the Word Cop an Insult or Offensive? A Special Episode of the podcast episode is streaming now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. So let me be clear: when I call someone a cop, it is a compliment. If someone chooses to be offended, that's their issue, not mine. Proud of the Title I don't casually refer to myself as a cop, out of respect for what the word represents. If others call me that, I accept it with gratitude. I'm honored to have served. Honored to have stood alongside men and women who ran toward danger while others ran away. Honored to be part of a profession that demands courage, resilience, sacrifice, and integrity. And I'm proud to defend a word that represents the best of that profession. So yes, I'll keep using the word cop. Because it's not just a name. It's a standard. It's a legacy. It's a badge of honor. To those who lived the job and did it the right way, “cop” is a quiet salute, one that carries respect, not disrespect. Is the Word Cop an Insult or Offensive? In Defense of a Title Earned. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. So I'll leave you with this question: When you hear the word cop, what do you hear? If you believe it's an insult, that belief belongs to you alone. It does not reflect the mindset of those who earned the title, lived the work, and still stand proudly behind the word. ️ This discussion is featured in a special episode of the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, available on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, LinkedIn, X, and major news and podcast platforms.
