Welcome to Visual Intonation, where we explore the transformative power of documentary filmmaking. In this series, we delve into how filmmakers use the camera not just as a tool for storytelling but as a weapon for truth, justice, and social change.  Join us as we journey through the historical context of documentary filmmaking, from the pioneering works of the Lumière brothers to the modern masterpieces of today. We discuss the ethical challenges and responsibilities filmmakers face, such as the balance between storytelling and exploitation, and the need for authentic representation.  Each episode highlights key documentaries that have made significant impacts on society, including: - *The Thin Blue Line* by Errol Morris, which helped overturn a wrongful conviction. - *Citizenfour* by Laura Poitras, which brought Edward Snowden's revelations to the world stage. - *For Sama* by Waad Al-Kateab, providing a personal look into the Syrian Civil War. - *The Cove* by Louie Psihoyos, exposing the brutal practice of dolphin hunting in Japan. - *13th* by Ava DuVernay, a compelling examination of racial inequality and mass incarceration in America.  We also examine the future of documentary filmmaking, including the role of new technologies like VR and AR, the importance of expanding access and diversity in the field, and the ethical considerations that come with increased community engagement and participatory methods.  Whether you're a seasoned filmmaker or a passionate viewer, "The Camera as a Weapon" offers profound insights into the art and impact of documentary filmmaking. Tune in to understand how the camera continues to be a powerful force for highlighting injustices, amplifying marginalized voices, and inspiring societal change.  Subscribe now and join us in uncovering the stories that shape our world, one frame at a time. Visual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

Ep. 150: Laura Poitras on All the Beauty and the Bloodshed Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw. I'm Nicolas Rapold. One of the year's best films is All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, directed by Laura Poitras. It's about the life and work of photographer Nan Goldin, and her successful activism against the Sackler Family, whose company PurduePharma produced Oxycontin. Poitras and Goldin were collaborators on the film, which is a deeply moving work of art itself, featuring Goldin's candid photography and her tough and evocative voiceover. Goldin speaks openly of traumas in her past, including the tragic story of her sister, Barbara. I'm a huge admirer of Poitras's films, and as she generously pointed out, I first interviewed her in 2010 about her film The Oath, which was followed by her features Risk and Citizenfour, winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary. It was an honor to talk with her again about All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, winner of the Golden Lion in Venice and more recently Best Documentary from the New York Film Critics Circle. “At first, I was terrified”. These are not words you expect to hear very often from Laura Poitras, one of the world's most fearless and acclaimed documentary filmmakers. Afterall, this is the filmmaker who took on the U.S. intelligence community with her Academy Award-winning film “Citizenfour” about NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. But shortly into our “Top Docs” interview about her trenchant and luminous new documentary “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed”, Laura began to use words like “nervous”, “intimidating”, and “terrified”. Rather than experiencing a potentially dangerous physical situation or government surveillance operation, Laura, instead, found herself confronting something even more formidable, the groundbreaking visual artist Nan Goldin. Not wanting to come up short in her portrait of someone that Laura describes as a legend, hero and inspiration, Laura was driven to create a documentary that would do justice to Nan, her artwork and her activism. Laura joined Ken on “Top Docs” to talk about how she and Nan came together to collaborate on the film and form a strong creative partnership. Given Nan's frequent use of live slideshows to present her most well-known work, how did Laura and Nan figure out the best way to feature Nan's art in the film? Why and how did Nan and the activist group that she founded in response to the opioid crisis train their sights on the Sackler family, whose company created OxyContin? And in what ways do big themes like destigmatization, resistance and legacy feature prominently in the film? Join us for this lively conversation… and don't be afraid.   Hidden Gems: “Crossroads” “Perfect Film”   Follow on Twitter: @topdocspod   “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” will be released by NEON in theaters on November 23 in New York City and December 2 in Los Angeles and San Francisco. A national release will follow. The film will premiere on HBO and HBO Max at a date to be announced   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

Imagine being detained by armed agents whenever you returned from traveling outside the country. That's what life became like for Academy Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras, who was placed on a terrorist watch-list after she made a documentary critical of the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq. Poitras was detained close to 100 times between 2006 and 2012, and border agents routinely copied her notebooks and threatened to take her electronics. It was only after Poitras teamed up with EFF to sue the government that she was able to see evidence of the government's six-year campaign of spying on her. This week on our podcast, Poitras joins EFF's Cindy Cohn and Danny O'Brien to talk about her continuing work to uncover spying on journalists, and what we can do to fight back against mass surveillance. In this episode you'll learn about: What life was like for Poitras when she was placed on a terror watch list and put under FBI surveillanceWhy security is a “team sport,” and what we can all do to protect ourselves as well as more vulnerable people  Poitras' new work about the NSO Group, an Israeli spyware company that has been accused of facilitating human rights abuses worldwideWhat legal strategies can be used to push back on mass surveillanceThe role of whistleblowers like Edward Snowden and human rights activists in uncovering spying abuses, and how they can be better protectedThe laws that we need to protect professional journalists and citizen journalists in an age where anyone can record the news If you have any feedback on this episode, please email podcast@eff.org. Director Alexander Nanau follows tenacious journalists as they expose wrongdoing at hospitals and in government dealings with the help of whistleblowers. He also gains access to a newly appointed health minister who is trying to reform the system. Like All the President's Men or Citizenfour, the results make us feel as if we're watching the process develop in real time, with basic freedoms at stake. Glenn is also the co-founder of online media publication The Intercept and, in 2019, published leaked messages that broke a watershed corruption scandal in the Brazilian government, which implicated officials in the highest levels of office of serious wrongdoing. 026 – Metadata Marketing SYNOPSIS Where do you draw the line between marketing and eavesdropping, or is there a line to be drawn? The collection of metadata and how it affects anyone using any sort of web-related technology is the main topic of discussion in this episode of Marketing RV with Ranalli & Volpe. Marketing RV's second video podcast picks up where Episode 025, Promotional Potpourri, fell short. That is, a detailed discussion about the Netflix's The Great Hack.  It all begins with the HBO documentary Citizenfour about NSA whistleblower Ed Snowden, who unveiled how much data the government was keeping on us. Gene says Citizenfour is the precursor to The Great Hack, the documentary about the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica Scandal. Lorraine is skeptical about all of it, but Gene insists that she'll be convinced after watching that these movies are accurate depictions. Ironically, The Great Hack ends with the question, “Are you a persuadable?”  In the end, we all have to make our own determination about any news we consume. Gene and Lorraine agree that it is okay to disagree, and they encourage it but are clearly fans of empathy and non-judgment, which seem to be lost in a lot of dialog these days.  As for data collection, it's a marketer's dream, making the task of messaging easier. If you like privacy, however, you'd better read the fine print before clicking “OK” online. Check out Episode 3 of the podcast Ask us Anything, where Gene trashes Lorraine. Also, come out to the Moshulu on Penn's Landing in Philadelphia Tuesday, August 27 to be part of the the Marketing RV podcast. This week we talk to two artists who see themselves as detectives. Trevor Paglen has designed sculptures for the Fukushima Exclusion Zone, as well as art that's been launched into geostationary orbit. His photographs of secret military bases (taken at long range, using equipment made for astronomers) appeared in the Academy Award–winning documentary Citizenfour. We spoke with him about how to care for one's personal digital hygiene in the age of surveillance. To document torture, mass executions, and human-rights abuses at Saydnaya Prison in Syria, Amnesty International enlisted the help of sound artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan. This week we're presenting Abu Hamdan's sound installation Saydnaya (The Missing 19DB)—that's “DB” as in decibels, the standard measure for the volume of sound. It offers an uncompromising depiction of Saydnaya, a notorious military prison in Syria, believed to be the site of up to fifty hangings each day. It's a compound in the mountains just north of Damascus holding up to twenty thousand people in conditions of enforced silence. Abu Hamdan made the piece through interviews conducted in Istanbul with five survivors from the prison. This episode also features a luminous and digressive review of the Organist, ripped from the heaps of listener commentary on our Apple Podcasts page, by the writer Vu Tran—no stranger to art as detective work himself. His work has been anthologized in Best American Mystery Stories, and his novel Dragonfish adapts and carries forward the tradition of writers like Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. In his reflections on this podcast, Vu finds Melville's Secret Sharer in the woods of Vermont. Ed Snowden is not alone. And we're not talking about how his girlfriend has moved in with him in Russia. There have been a handful of other technologists who've taken a bold stand and faced off with the U.S. government to protect your privacy from mass surveillance. We don't yet know if it ends well for any of them.  Our two guests in this show each risked their livelihood by refusing to help the NSA or FBI snoop on Americans. Let's get to know them.  “This is our responsibility as Americans to speak out against something that we think is wrong because we are really setting the standard for future generations,” Ladar Levison. Ladar Levison and William Binney both play a role in the Ed Snowden affair—and they each appear prominently in Laura Poitras' new documentary Citizenfour. Binney worked for the NSA for more than 30 years. He was an early architect of the NSA systems that were eventually used for mass surveillance on U.S. citizens. That wasn't how he intended his programming skills to be used, so he quit and cried foul. Without documents to prove it though, he was overlooked for years by the general public.  Ladar Levison built the encrypted email system Lavabit that Ed Snowden has said he used for private communications. Naturally, the FBI wanted to take a look at some of those messages. But rather than turn over the keys to his encryption—something that would have compromised all his clients, not just Snowden—Levison shut down his whole company in dramatic fashion. (He was on a previous episode of New Tech City while under a gag order about the case. Listen here.)  We wanted to find out who does something like that? Why take that stand? What's the motivation? The strategy? The fallout? We got the two men together for the first time and tried to understand the mindset of a privacy crusader. They have two very different strategies, but share one big sense of outrage. Why not send this episode to that friend who doesn't care at all about privacy. See what they think.
