Matthew Xavier Corrigan, an artist who splits time between Cork and Dublin, released his debut solo album Beast of Changing on March 21. Written in reflection of a tempestuous season of change across Irish coastlines, centred on Ballinskelligs in Co. Kerry, Myrtleville in Co. Cork and Clare Island in Co. Mayo, Beast of Changing follows a story of growth, of love lost and found, of crossing the threshold into dark, cold, saline water - of surrender. Themes of environmentalism and how we shape the coasts, of erosion and rising water, are woven throughout. Matthew Xavier Corrigan's debut album was cut to tape with a single collaborator, Mike Halls, over five days in Liverpool, the product of years of writing rendered in a few day's takes. After pushing to a more intimate and organic sound on the From ten, with love EP, the artist now goes deeper; covered in analog warmth and rich harmonies, delicately performed, taking inspiration from the likes of Andy Shauf, Bill Callahan and Robin Pecknold. This renewed focus on analog warmth even comes out in the imagery; the press photos and album/single artwork were captured on expired film by Ronan Burke on vintage film cameras. Matthew talks about his former project Ghostking is Dead, why that came to an end, the Cork scene and working on festivals such as his own River Runs Round, Quarter Block Party, Quiet Lights and Sounds from a Safe Harbour, the story behind Beast of Changing, and lots more. In Episode 1350, Sean Woodley is joined by Katie Heindl (DIME, Basketball Feelings) to break down the Toronto Raptors' 104-98 win over the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday night, with which they imrpoved to 31-32, and 8-2 over their last 10 games. Off the top, Sean and Katie discuss how the win over the Bulls showcased the greater abundance of options the Raptors have to close games, and the fact that after being so one-dimensional all season long, they now have different ways to win thanks to the arrival of Jakob Poeltl and the cascading effects he has brought with him. Next, Sean and Katie dig into Scottie Barnes' impressive fourth quarter showing, in which he registered four very loud blocks and inspired the Raptors to victory, according to Nick Nurse. Plus, they examine the larger developemental track Barnes has been on this season, his struggles shooting around the rim, and why he still is worth being extremely bullish on as a long-term ceiling-raiser for the Raptors. Lastly, they run through the Good (Jakob Poeltl's ability to extend possessions, O.G. Anunoby's fourth-quarter poster dunk), the Bad (rushing shots off of offensive boards, the nickname "4th Quarter B") and the Hmmm (Will Barton's arrival and potential role on the team) to close out the show.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson aka CMAT and Rachael Lavelle were the guests on a live recording of the TPOE podcast at Plugd over the Quarter Block Party weekend earlier this year. Relatively new artists, they talk about the art of songwriting, retreats/workshops, stanning each other's music, support from the Irish music industry and what to expect from both of them over 2020 and beyond.
Dublin-based band Autre Monde release their debut album The Imaginary Museum on Strange Brew Records this Friday, February 28. After playing together and with each other in various bands under the Popical Island collective, the foursome - Paddy Hanna (vocals), Padraig Cooney (bass, synth, vocals), Mark Chester (guitar) and Eoghan O'Brien (drums, synth, backing vocals) - got together and had their first rehearsal on the last day of the Popical Island space, the Pop Inn. After a couple of singles and EPs since 2017, they finally release this brilliant debut album, recorded with Daniel Fox (Girl Band) and which was done with the organising principle of making a record “by a band who were playing esoteric post-punk in 1979 but who are now transplanted to 1986 where a hit is demanded”. Over a 50-minute chat in their hostel room at Kinlay House after a show at Quarter Block Party early in February, Autre Monde talk about band injuries, how they got together, Popical Island, 'bockety' music, Strange Brew, and lots more. Press release: Autre Monde emerged from the ashes of the Popical Island collective as its headquarters fell victim to the city's relentless purge of cultural spaces in 2017. Indeed, the first Autre Monde rehearsal was on the last day of the Pop Inn's existence as a venue/rehearsal/recording space on Little Britain Street. They quickly gained attention for their early singles and stirring live performances, with The Thin Air insisting they were “one of the very best bands in the country”. The Irish Times noted that Autre Monde were “mining Television, ESG, Suicide and the The Slits”, and that's about right. A murky, exploratory self-titled EP followed (with 8-minute Can via Pentangle-channelling highlight 'Your Name' still a favourite in live sets) before the band set out to make "The Imaginary Museum" in summer 2018. They signed to Strange Brew in 2019 in time to release the first fruits of those sessions. The first single from The Imaginary Museum, Fever in May, was used in an Audi ad in late 2019. They have been invited to play at the 2020 SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.

Galway-born, Dublin-based artist Maija Sofia released her debut album Bath Time at the tail end of 2019 and began 2020 with a Choice Music Prize nomination for Irish album of the year, to be decided on March 5. It's a brilliantly immersive listen, one that continues to reward return listens. On the podcast, Maija discusses writing, songwriting, how the album came together, genre and defining her sound (not indie pop!), the Choice Prize nomination and who she'd like to see win, and her show at Cork's Quarter Block Party this Saturday, February 8, with Lemoncello in Coughlan's. A live TPOE podcast also takes place at Quarter Block Party: Plugd (upstairs at the Roundy), 4pm-5pm, Saturday, February 8 - and it's free! Bath Time press release Sofia took inspiration from story-driven traditional folk ballads and shone them through the lens of a punk DIY ethos. The album name comes from the ritual of daily bathing, a whimsical place where most of the lyrics were written. Tracks on the album shine a light on the voices and stories of women through history, from Edie Sedgwick to Bridget Cleary, and the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church. The album was recorded by Chris Barry at Ailfionn Studio and features performances by Ronan Kealy (Junior Brother) and Niall Murphy (Oh Boland). ‘The Gold Shoes', opens the album tentatively, it's an ethereal opening before the melancholic and dark ‘Hail Mary', which starts soft, but the music grows in power alongside the protagonist, as the harp feeds into it more, building on the haunting sound with the complexity and depth of Thom Yorke. ‘Edie Sedgwick', named after the muse of Andy Warhol has alt-country elements from lap steel player Niall Murphy (Oh Boland) and cellist Laura McCabe (Molly Sterling). ‘The Wife of Michael Cleary' is an ode to Bridget Cleary, killed by her husband in 1895. Michael Cleary believed his wife had been abducted by fairies with a changeling left in her place. The male vocal is provided by off kilter alt-folk Junior Brother, with singing in the round building tension. ‘The Glitter' is disturbingly beautiful, an ode to Jean Rhys, a troubled novelist from the Carribean who came to England aged 16 and dealt with issues of displacement and unbelonging. As is ‘Cobweb' with Sofia's rich contralto “I didn't know I was on my own. I'm only as wise as you.” ‘Morning' mourns lost relationship and the failure of trying to fix a flawed lover. ‘Elizabeth' is brighter too, but still poignant. ‘The Trees They Do Grow High' is sung the point of view of a woman forced into marriage too young, watching her children grow and speaking to them. The album wraps around the listener like a velvet cloak, time is irrelevant, and the pain and segregation of female life has been sharply observed by Sofia. 'Bath Time' is a collection of songs written between Dublin, London and rural Galway, it was recorded slowly over several months by Chris Barry in Ailfionn Studio in Dublin. The guitar and vocals tracks were recorded all in one take and then others we brought in to finish the piece - Niall Murphy from Oh Boland plays lap steel and synths, Christophe Capewell who plays with Lisa O'Neill played fiddle, harp by Meabh McKenna, synths by Clara Tracey, and Cello by Laura McCabe, and some guest vocals by Ronan Kealy (Junior Brother).

Say hello to Gavin Dunne, the Cork musician behind online music project Miracle Of Sound. Gavin joined us at the Vision Centre on Cork’s North Main Street a few weeks ago during the Quarter Block Party to talk to us about how something which began as an accidental enterprise writing and recording fan-songs for movies and videogames has become a micro-industry. These days, Gavin's songs and compositions, all produced in his home studio and covering a vast range of genres, have pulled in over 50 million views across the internet as well as the interest of a rake of industry giants. The tale of the accidental internet star, no less.
