In this episode, we get to meet Uwade. Uwade a Cailfornia-by-way-of-North Carolina singer-songwriter, who has just released her new debut album, Florilegium. You may have - like I did - first encountered her, though, as the first voice on the opening track of the last Fleet Foxes record Shore, called "Wading in the Waist-High Water". In this chat, she and I discuss the writing and process of creating this first solo LP, what it means for her to be going out on her own, the musical touchstones of her childhood that found their ways into these songs, and more. We do also touch on her work with Robin Pecknold & co. and the subsequent tours she shared with Fleet Foxes, and what she learned from that. Finally, we touch on her academic life, as she is currently working toward a PhD. Thank you for listening.

Matthew Xavier Corrigan, an artist who splits time between Cork and Dublin, released his debut solo album Beast of Changing on March 21. Written in reflection of a tempestuous season of change across Irish coastlines, centred on Ballinskelligs in Co. Kerry, Myrtleville in Co. Cork and Clare Island in Co. Mayo, Beast of Changing follows a story of growth, of love lost and found, of crossing the threshold into dark, cold, saline water - of surrender. Themes of environmentalism and how we shape the coasts, of erosion and rising water, are woven throughout. Matthew Xavier Corrigan's debut album was cut to tape with a single collaborator, Mike Halls, over five days in Liverpool, the product of years of writing rendered in a few day's takes. After pushing to a more intimate and organic sound on the From ten, with love EP, the artist now goes deeper; covered in analog warmth and rich harmonies, delicately performed, taking inspiration from the likes of Andy Shauf, Bill Callahan and Robin Pecknold. This renewed focus on analog warmth even comes out in the imagery; the press photos and album/single artwork were captured on expired film by Ronan Burke on vintage film cameras. Matthew talks about his former project Ghostking is Dead, why that came to an end, the Cork scene and working on festivals such as his own River Runs Round, Quarter Block Party, Quiet Lights and Sounds from a Safe Harbour, the story behind Beast of Changing, and lots more. Big Red Machine - "Phoenix (feat. Fleet Foxes & Anaïs Mitchell)" from the 2021 album How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last? on 37d03d. Last month, The National's Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon released their second album under the name Big Red Machine, titled How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last?. The album features a heavyweight line-up of guests, including Taylor Swift, Sharon Van Etten, This Is The Kit, Ben Howard, Naeem, Lisa Hannigan, My Brightest Diamond's Shara Nova, and on today's Song of the Day, Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes and Tony Award-winning singer/songwriter Anaïs Mitchell.  "'Phoenix' was one of the last songs we wrote for this record," Dessner says via a press release. "I was thinking about The Band and the Grateful Dead... maybe imagining this Big Red Machine album was some version of The Last Waltz. Justin first heard it while driving and immediately the chorus melody came into his head. I shared the sketch with Robin Pecknold, who I've been a fan of forever and who I'd been dreaming would join us on this record. Robin wrote the verses and pre chorus as a kind of dialogue with Justin, recalling a conversation they once had backstage in Phoenix. Later Anais wrote words to the chorus and The Westerlies added their magic to the instrumental. JT Bates rumbles around in rare form on the drums on this song. I think it's what I always imagined Big Red Machine would sound like." Pecknold adds, “It was a high, high honor to work on this song, and beyond that it was a really interesting creative challenge. Justin's vocals and the beautiful chorus were already in place before I got my hands on it, so I felt my job melodically and lyrically was to set his entrance up in the best possible way. I felt like a pilgrim putting questions to an elusive sage, not needing clear answers, but happy for the chance to ask.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On August 27th Big Red Machine, the joint musical project of Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner - artists known for their work as Bon Iver and in the rock band The National, respectively - returned with new music. You've most definitely heard Dessner's production work elsewhere, like on Taylor Swift's pandemic albums evermore and folklore. The Big Red Machine album, titled How Long Do You Think it's Going to Last, celebrates the fruits of creative partnership and the importance of family and community. At least, that's what we took from our conversation with Dessner. “A lot of my favorite music - usually there's something elusive about it, in that whatever is elusive is coming from this weird cocktail of different people's input. There's just this weird, swampy alchemy, and you can't easily put your finger on why it's so moving.”  Dessner told us he draws much of his creative inspiration from the kinetic energy generated by multiple musical brains working in tandem, which makes sense given the list of features on this album - everyone from Swift to Sharon van Etten to Anaïs Mitchell to The Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold. “I'm such a born collaborator. I'm definitely interested in this exchange where you make something and you send it out into the ether and then it comes back slightly changed or radically changed. Then you work on it and send it again. I like this handoff, this communal approach to music making.” The musical collective fostered by Vernon and Dessner on How Long Do You Think It's Going to Last is a testament to the power of musical communities in a year of intense isolation. We're so pleased to bring you Nate's conversation with Aaron Dessner in this week's episode. Songs Discussed Big Red Machine - Birch, feat. Taylor Swift Big Red Machine - Phoenix, feat. Robin Pecknold has been the chief creative mind behind Fleet Foxes since the band’s beginnings back in 2005; the latest Fleet Foxes album was surprise-released in September of 2020, and Shore was met with lots of well-deserved love. Elijah Wolf is just starting out on his career. The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter was raised in upstate New York, and was a fan of Fleet Foxes before a chance meeting with Pecknold in a New York guitar shop. Wolf, who was working at Crandall Guitars, was playing music by a band called Holy Hive in the store, and it turned out that both Pecknold and Wolf were friends with that band. They got to know each other and started sharing works-in-progress with each other during the pandemic. Pecknold’s songs would end up on Shore, and Wolf’s would become his first album, Better Lighting, which is due out February 26 on Trash Casual Records. Both records, funnily enough, feature drummer Josh Jaeger—it’s a small world after all. The two songwriters get into a great chat about their process, their pandemic work strategies, and the idea of what defines an album. Enjoy the talk, and subscribe now to stay in the loop on future episodes. This week’s episode was produced by Kevin O’Connell, and the Talkhouse Podcast theme is composed and performed by The Range.

Since forming in Seattle in 2006, Fleet Foxes have carved a singular path through the modern music scene, amassing a global following with their celestial harmonies and gorgeous, autumnal indie-folk. They broke out with their 2008 self-titled debut album, a runaway success that frontman Robin Pecknold says he found “hugely shocking”. After their follow-up record Helplessness Blues, he retreated from the spotlight for a number of years before the band returned with 2017’s Crack-Up and now their fourth record, 2020's Shore. We talk about all that in this interview, as well as Robin’s upbringing in Seattle and his path through the Seattle music scene, how he struggled to cope with the sudden success of Fleet Foxes’ debut, and why he can never, ever forgive Richard Gere’s character in An Officer and A Gentleman.

Nick kicks things off this week with an album recommendation. “Shore” by Fleet Foxes was released in time for Fall last month, but is a surprisingly brighter sounding record. We discuss frontman Robin Pecknold’s new found optimism and whether Jay is allowed to like something so central to Pitchfork’s aesthetic.Song: Fleet Foxes - “Jara”Next up, we have a special guest this week! Kaz PS co-wrote, directed and shot “The Halcyon”, which was released on the sci-fi shorts channel Dust. The film, co-written and co-scored by our very own Greg Loman, was picked up by Dust to be included as part of a collection of post-apocalyptic short films. When that fell through, Dust was cool enough to put out “The Halcyon” as a featured release on their YouTube channel, but didn’t include any context or explanation about the genre discrepancy. So a decent number of Dust’s most loyal sci-fi loving fans chose to express their confusion and outrage via the comments. So, Nick & Jay decided to read some of them on the show to give Kaz & Greg a chance to respond. Kaz was a fantastic guest and we look forward to having her back in the future!Song: Peter Schilling - “Major Tom”Jay bookends the episode with an album pick of his own, the wonderful re-release of Tom Petty’s 1994 solo album “Wildflowers”. Originally a 24 track album, the re-release contains all the songs that didn’t make it into the original release, as well as demo & alternate versions of the tracks. It’s a 4 hour master class on song composition and structure, studio tracking & editing. You should check it out ;-)Song: Tom Petty - “Climb That Hill”

Songs you should definitely listen to include Waterfall, I Wanna Be Adored, and I Am The Resurrection, all of which we have helpfully linked for you in the show text.Subscribe to us on iTunes! Anthony Delaney (@thearisestudy) is a double medalled Emergency Physician and Intensivist who’s achievements include several high impact publications in major journals as well as keeping his chooks alive and away from his two little kids. He’s an intimidating college examiner that has confused many by looking like a bit like Robin Pecknold of Fleet foxes fame.  He is also THE Big Man (along with Sandy Peake and Rinaldo Bellomo and several other incredible reseachers) behind the ARISE trial, which is a multi-centre, randomised controlled trial of early goal-directed therapy in patients presenting to the Emergency Department with severe sepsis in Australasia. It involves 47 sites (including Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Finland and possibly Ireland) and has enrolled 1095 pts. The trial commenced enrolment in October 2008. and is well on its way to completion. The sound snippets are from Caspar Babypants which can be bought here. The favor that the late great Clarence Clemons did for host Pat Healy. Plus, if "Pumped Up Kicks" is the song of summer, what is the song of summer for Mark Foster of Foster the People? Janelle Monae asks Robin Pecknold of the Fleet Foxes a question, and he in turn asks one of Cass McCombs. Chris Cornell clarifies his 2005 statements about Soundgarden never getting back together and we treat you to a song by Locksley.

Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes. Source: WikipediaThis show features the Three Songs EP from hirsute Baroque-folker Robin Pecknold, better known as the frontman of Seattle's Fleet Foxes. The EP was somewhat clandestinely released via Fleet Foxes' Twitter account on March 7. The tracks should help sate the appetite of fans anxiously awaiting the sophomore record from the band, which is slated for release on May 3. Though Pecknold (and his amazing set of pipes) are behind these tracks, they're quieter and less layered than full band tracks. I'm particularly fond of the first cut featuring Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear. Download the EP below and enjoy with your favorite amber-colored libation.Robin Pecknold - I'm Losing Myself feat.
