With most of the big free agent work done, attention can turn to other important issues central to the team's future. Like what's coming for Anthony Davis. The Lakers star is eligible for a new contract extension before the season, one that could add another three years and nearly $168 million to his contract. ESPN's Dave McMenamin reports the Lakers are likely to come to some sort of arrangement with A.D. before the season starts - details TBD. Obviously those details matter, but bigger picture, it raises all kinds of questions about not only the Lakers and their future (this would be the first deal taking Davis well beyond the LeBron James Timeline, Davis will be well into his 30s, and so on) but the way contracts like this will be handled across the league. With the new CBA, will teams automatically give out these extensions/max contracts to star players? Is this something the Lakers should automatically do? Would they be better off letting that deal play out? How much risk is there in giving an injury prone guy like that so much money going into his 30s? How much risk is there not giving him that contract extension? Meanwhile, the Denver Nuggets continue demonstrating how much they relished beating the Lakers en route to the first title in that franchise's history. It mattered. A lot. They talked about it after they won. At the parade. In subsequent interviews, and so on. This week now-former Nugget Bruce Brown noted how intense and locked in Denver was in that series, and that they never felt threatened in any of the games despite close scores. So do we have a genuine rivalry at this point? Both teams ought to be very good next year, which will make those games meaningful. Certainly a third postseason go-round is possible. It's easy to hope for, because the Lakers have been without any real rivalries for a few years, now. They were, obviously, really bad for a long stretch, and even when LeBron and Davis arrived, the all-or-nothing yo-yo they've been on has made it hard to establish those sorts of rivalries. One of the more significant signings of the offseason for the Lakers - some might say the most significant - was Miami guard Gabe Vincent. At the very least, he was their biggest investment, at three years and $33 million dollars. He slots into the role held by Dennis Schröder, and is set to play a really big role in the team's rotation. He had a very impressive playoffs, including some particularly important moments in the Eastern Conference Finals against Boston. Particularly notable was his outside shooting, which went well above his career norms. So who exactly are the Lakers getting? Do not kill the messenger. Sunday, Sam Quinn at CBS noted on Twitter that (relaying a report from Marc Stein) the Mavericks would be willing/happy to flip Christian Wood in a sign-and-trade deal. For obvious reasons, since they could get something in return for him. Wood would clearly love that outcome, because it would mean he's getting something more than a minimum deal. And the Lakers are part of the conversation because they're one of the teams linked to Wood as a possible free agent destination. Quinn noted, for that reason, that while he doesn't think this will happen and it's currently not a live scenario, one way—and really the only way—the Lakers could engage in a S/T with Dallas for Wood would be by trading Jarred Vanderbilt. To say the least, that sparked a big online conversation among fans online. So would you do it? Trade Vanderbilt for Wood? The consensus among fans was a hard pass, but how much of that is optics? Vanderbilt is a VERY easy player to like. Wood is VERY easy to dislike. What's the argument for no? Is there a reasonable argument for yes? What does the conversation say about Vanderbilt's role on the team? Where does he fit in the rotation? It's not a question with obvious answers. Meanwhile, Darvin Ham had some serious praise for Austin Reaves, saying that he believes Reaves will be on an All-Star team, and soon. Is he right? It's official. During Wednesday's ESPY Awards, LeBron James confirmed he's not retiring and will return to the Lakers. He's now shooting about 41% from downtown in Vegas, on 9 shots a game. Hodge knows exactly what will get him in the league, and keep him there: Shooting and defense. And the two-way player out of Missouri, who is already 24 and doesn't have time to screw around if he wants to make it in the NBA, has a role model that Lakers fans will recognize and respect. His choice shows tremendous self-awareness, and I'm sure impresses the Lakers. Is LeBron James really in a five way tie for the best player in the NBA? Well, if you believe this year's 2K rankings, yes. Yes he is. The issue isn't whether they're right or wrong, exactly, but it does drive home the paradox of LeBron these days, and the tension that goes along with building a team around him. On the one hand, he's not *that guy* on a night in, night out basis, across a full season's worth of games. He's not going to play in all 82. Or probably even 72. You hope for something over 62. But for one night, can he be that good? For one series? Yes, yes he can. Anthony Davis? Just behind LeBron's 97 ranking, at a 94. And the same basic dynamic exists with him, too. He's capable of playing elite ball, but do you know he's going to be there? Meanwhile, the folks at 2K produced some fun numbers about the team, some that seem accurate, some fans hope are wishcasting, and finally others that make you wonder if they've ever actually seen any of these players on the floor. And how about the new flopping rules? The NBA announced that the league will be cracking down on them this season, calling T's for players who egregiously violate flopping sensibilities. And the Laker this likely impacts most? Austin Reaves. Especially if refs don't tolerate embellishment on the offensive side of things. Because embellishing fouls is a form of flopping, right? Reaves is a guy who has built selling contact (not flopping, necessarily, but selling contact) into his game on both sides of the ball. Could he be impacted by the rules? Not that you'd expect otherwise, but Darvin Ham was talking up the Lakers roster earlier this week with Mark Medina of The Sporting Tribune. Ham says the Lakers absolutely have a roster capable of winning an NBA championship. Not that he was saying the Lakers should be prohibitive favorites or anything, but that they've got the pieces to get it done. So is he right? Or is this just a coach delivering the normal platitudes you get in July? It's hard to argue with his premise. The Lakers, after all, are coming off a Western Conference Finals appearance, and even if you don't think they radically improved this offseason, they certainly didn't get any worse. (And realistically, while the improvement wasn't massive - that sort of transformative thing wasn't really available to them - they enter the season with a more balanced roster than last season and the opportunity to build with continuity. That continuity thing? Ham is a big proponent, calling it a major reason the Nuggets won a title, and noting that it's becoming a bigger trend across the league. The Lakers might have a history of chasing stars, but this year they are trying a different path. (And, for what it's worth, a better one.) So what does the rest of the conference look like? Denver took a small step back, losing Bruce Brown and Jeff Green. What about Memphis? Phoenix? How many known, or even semi-known quantities are there in the West? After Denver, and probably Sacramento, you've got the Lakers. Is that it? And finally, Kobe Bryant became a Laker on July 11, 1996. It feels like a long time ago, in so many ways (because it is) and at the same time, it doesn't. Perhaps because Bryant, because he died so suddenly and so prematurely, feels frozen in time. Looking back to that day in '96, it's interesting to think what would have happened if the Nets hadn't been scared away from drafting Bryant. The "Sliding Doors" scenarios are infinite. The Lakers have constructed most of their roster—just that pesky final center (presumably) remains—and generally to terms very favorable to the team. One wrinkle that was disclosed this week? Via Keith Smith, the cap guru, D'Angelo Russell waived the no-trade clause afforded him (and any other player signing a similar deal) thanks to his contract, which amounts to only one guaranteed year, since the second one is an option. Why? Does that mean Russell is, once again, on the trade block, before the ink even dries on this deal? Well, sort of? Russell will always be placed into trade rumors. He's been there since the Lakers drafted him. He was in rumors in Brooklyn. He was in rumors in Golden State. He was in rumors this summer. He'll be in rumors next year, the year after, and with whatever teams he plays for before he retires. But it's a setup that benefits everyone. If the Lakers are going well and Russell is playing well, he's not going to be dealt at all. If he's not? It benefits everyone to make his departure easier. Meanwhile, Max Christie is looking excellent in Summer League, not just as a scorer but displaying a full floor game. The difference he could make in LA's rotation this season, if he's a guy the team would want to play 15-20 a night vs. can play 10-15 is dramatic. That's like acquiring a $5-10 million player via free agency, or making a trade where you sacrifice nothing. And it's the floor game that gets him in the rotation, not the scoring. That's the skill the Lakers are least likely to need. Jalen Hood-Schifino has also settled into very steady play. Very few mistakes, very little flash. Just solid decision after solid decision. The outside shot needs to come, but for now, the type of low turnover, low mistake ball he's playing is what the Lakers would need if he's pressed into service (or, of course, earns it). Finally, Max Lewis signed a four-year deal. Are the Lakers getting smarter about locking up second rounders? Or is it a matter of representation? The young Lakers players on their Summer League team continue to look good, winning two more games over the weekend. But while there's plenty to talk about with Jalen Hood-Schifino, Colin Castleton, Max Lewis, Max Christie and more, it was stuff Rob Pelinka was saying to the media that got a lot of attention. He noted in a couple of interviews that he had talked to Anthony Davis once again about his position on the floor, and that the Lakers would like to repeat some of the success from 2020, when A.D. played most of his minutes with another big next to him. Does that mean the Lakers plan to start Davis with another big? Jaxson Hayes, or whoever they look for with the 14th roster spot? (Pelinka confirmed they'd like to find another big.) Would that be a bench configuration the Lakers deploy from time to time, when the matchups are right? Where Davis plays, at power forward or center, has been a hot-button issue thanks to numbers indicating how well the Lakers perform with Davis as a five. It's why he played 99% of his minutes last year at center, compared to about 90% at power forward back in 2019-20. Of course, the Lakers also had a pair of viable centers in JaVale McGee and Dwight Howard, as opposed to only having Hayes, who could break out in L.A., but to this point hasn't been a reliable pro. So what was Pelinka talking about? Is there a C out there who could change that dynamic? How much PF would you expect Davis to play this year? (And is Castleton a solution to any of this? He continues to dominate SPL.) Finally, the NBA announced the rules and groups for its inaugural in-season tournament. The Lakers are in group play with Portland, Memphis, Utah and Phoenix.
