Evie Ashton reviews Sentimental Garbage, a podcast hosted by Caroline O'Donoghue about all the good stuff in life: film reviews, life observations, and travel notes.
This all started with my desire to do a Paul Mescal episode. A listener suggested we ask Caroline O'Donoghue — author of The Rachel Incident, host of Sentimental Garbage, noted Irish person — to be co-host. We reached out, and (gasp!) she responded that she didn't actually know that much about Paul… but would be more than happy to do an episode about the “Irishification of pop culture.” Since my interest in Irish men (and movies, books, music, television, poetry) by no means starts with Paul Mescal, I was thrilled. And let me tell you: this episode is fascinating. Hilarious, expansive, weird — and I promise you it will make you see Irish Pop Culturification in a different way (and perhaps appreciate Paul Mescal even more). It will certainly make you appreciate Caroline O'Donoghue, who made me laugh on mic more than any previous co-host. She's brilliant, and this episode is so weird and good (one of those ones where we finished recording and Melody and I immediately texted each other: AMAZING). As always, I can't wait for your thoughts — come join the conversation in the comments!Join the ranks of paid subscribers and get bonus content, access to the discussion threads, ad-free episodes, and the knowledge that you're supporting an indie pod trying to make its way in the world. Welcome back to Sentimental Garbage, where the sequel is better than the original and the movie is better than the book. This week, Caroline admits she was wrong about Mean Girls the musical and guest Okechukwu Nzelu reminds her what was so good about the franchise to begin with. Hosted on Acast. This week I'm honoured to be joined by the multitalented powerhouse that is Caroline O'Donoghue! Host of wonder-podcast Sentimental Garbage and author of The Rachel Incident and Promising Young Women, I loved chatting all things crush with her, and look out for the bit that our recording platform's autogenerated programme notes referred to as 'using Wayne's World as a model for healthy relationship dynamics'. As ever, I'm over on Substack if you'd like to come and pay me a visit over there - https://crushedbymcs.substack.com/ And Happy Christmas! Love you lots. MCS. xx Learn more about your ad choices. Ethical non-monogamy, platonic friendships and TikTok dating coaches: we get into all manner of divisive topics this week, huns, before a big old debate on North West, who has recently reignited the nepo-baby conversation with her controversial performance as Simba in the Lion King. Should adults be critiquing a child on the internet? And how does Kim and Kanye's parenting approach figure? Speaking of, the Kardashians have returned to Disney for a new season and the elephant in the room is Ozempic. From Kylie and Kims' shrinking frames, to scenes blatantly showing Wegovy in Scott Dissick's fridge – are they now knowingly positioning themselves as the poster family for weight loss drugs? And how do we as a society navigate the glamorisation of Ozempic; can the benefits really outweigh the side effects? Next is a look at Will Smith's upcoming comeback, why Brad Pitt's daughter is dropping his surname and, finally, a review of the new Netflix series everyone's talking about, Eric, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Vincent, a puppeteer in 1980s New York whose nine-year-old son goes missing. Is Eric the most divisive show of 2024? DM us your thoughts on Instagram @straightuppod, and let us know what you'd like us to cover next week! Rachel is a student working at a bookstore when she meets James, and it's love at first sight. Effervescent and insistently heterosexual, James soon invites Rachel to be his roommate and the two begin a friendship that changes the course of both their lives forever. Together, they run riot through the streets of Cork city, trying to maintain a bohemian existence while the threat of the financial crash looms before them. When Rachel falls in love with her married professor, Dr. Fred Byrne, James helps her devise a reading at their local bookstore, with the goal that she might seduce him afterwards. But Fred has other desires. So begins a series of secrets and compromises that intertwine the fates of James, Rachel, Fred, and Fred's glamorous, well-connected, bourgeois wife. Aching with unrequited love, shot through with delicious, sparkling humor, Caroline O'Donoghue's The Rachel Incident (Knopf, 2023) is a triumph. Hiya, friends! Today, Mich and Caroline (and producer Annabelle!) turn their attention to something you've all been *demanding* from us: a deep dive into Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss, and what the hell happened to their friendship. You guys know that commentary around Taylor and Karlie has run rampant for years, so while we won't get too deeply in the weeds of every single internet hole, consider this episode a wide-ranging pop culture exploration… what is the commentary about Taylor and Karlie? What are the three main theories, and why can't people stop talking about them? And what does their friendship maybe say… about… us? We discuss her latest book, The Rachel Incident, which follows a young woman's crush on her professor, and a subsequent plot to seduce him. We loved talking with Caroline about the book, as well as the hidden power of channelling female rage in writing, the Taylor Swift phenomenon, and the best food to boost productivity.Check out Love Lives on Independent TV and all major podcast platforms, and follow us on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/millenniallove. What were you wearing in the ‘90s, Slushies? Sleeveless flannel and crochet? Paco Rabanne? We're beguiled by Emily Pulfer-Terino's poems on this episode as we discuss how she slides us back to the ‘90s. She has us sniffing magazine perfume inserts and marveling at the properly cranky voice she invokes for an epigraph, borrowed from Vogue's letters to the editor. What were we thinking wearing all those shreds? Only the girls on those glossy pages know for sure. For more context, check out Karina Longworth's excellent podcast, You Must Remember This, and her recent deep dive into the bonkers eroticism of the 1990s. Plus, Sentimental Garbage's episode on Dirty Dancing featuring Curtis Sittenfeld. For a great collection of poems that draws its title from grunge-era jargon (kinda, sorta, wink, wink), we recommend a book we love by our pal Daniel Nester: Harsh Realm: My 1990s. This episode is brought to you by our sponsor Wilbur Records, who kindly introduced us to the artist is A.M.Mills whose song “Spaghetti with Loretta” now opens our show. At the table: Jason Schneiderman, Marion Wrenn, Kathleen Volk Miller, Samantha Neugebauer, and Dagne Forrest Emily Pulfer-Terino is a poet and writer whose work has appeared in Tupelo Quarterly, Hunger Mountain, The Collagist, The Southeast Review, Poetry Northwest, Stone Canoe, The Louisville Review, Juked, and other journals and anthologies. Her poetry chapbook, Stays the Heart, is published by Finishing Line Press. She has been a Tennessee Williams Poetry Scholar at the Sewanee Writers' Conference and has been granted a fellowship for creative nonfiction at the Vermont Studio Center. She holds an MFA in creative writing from Syracuse University, and she lives in Western Massachusetts. At least I'll know where to find my new wardrobe this year...in the nearest dumpster…talk about the Emperor's New Clothes. Tsk, tsk.”—(Letter to the Editor)[1] What's more glorious than a girl in a field, curled in the whorl of a deer bed, alfalfa haloing her dreams of fashion magazines while she plies matted hay, untatting her world? Bales score the landscape, parceling endlessness, parsing this solo tableau, while her heroes wrench their music into being in Seattle, gray, time zones away. What's grunge if not her dense crochet of castoff couture curated from dumpsters and worn with a frisson of pride and shame: flowering nightgown, old ski boots, sweater turned lace in places by moths and age? And this field like where models pose in Vogue, each page itself a piece of land and an ethos framed inside a storyboard. Scala Naturae Like prying pods of milkweed so those astral seeds effuse— unseaming magazine ads for perfume. Anointing my wrists with scented glue, running each over the edge of a page, testing scents I aspired to buy and classifying my olfactory taxonomy. Grass evoked the world I'd known with hints of rain and magnolia slight as fog above an unmown field. DNA's rosemary, oakmoss, and mint, ancient and clear as purpose; glass spiraled bottle signifying sentience and enduring iteration. Both ethereal and hyperreal, Destiny offered apricots, orchids, and roses-- bottle opaque as an eyelid, veil of petals sheer as promise. Samsara was amber, sandalwood, ylang ylang, peach. Syllabically lulling, its s and a extending, repeating, suggesting endlessness. Cycle of birth and death rebranded as serenity in ongoingness. Angel's burst of praline and patchouli lit the crystal facets of that star, making heaven of my pulse and ordinary air. [1] Wynne Bittlinger, letter to the editor in Vogue US, February 1993

Splashed on magazine covers, all over Instagram feeds, and getting clicks on TMZ, celebrity gossip is a steady presence. But fame and fortune have their downsides, and from the experiences of stars from Marilyn Monroe to Britney Spears, it's clear there's a dark side to the gossip mill. So, what if there was an ethical way to satisfy our curiosity about the lifestyles of the rich and famous? Comedians Ashley Hamilton and Claire Parker created a podcast to do just that. In Celebrity Memoir Book Club, the co-hosts recount the juicy details as recorded by stars themselves. From Victoria Beckham to Mariah Carey, the duo reads the memoirs, recounts the highlights and recommends which ones are worth a look. This week, Leah chats with Ashley and Claire about their favourite memoirs, getting on TikTok during the pandemic, and finds out what podcasts they can't get enough of. If you're craving a pop culture deep dive, this episode is made for you! Featuring: Celebrity Memoir Book Club, Beyond The Blinds, My Therapist Ghosted Me, Sentimental Garbage, Dunzo! We're limping towards the finish line of an uneven first season, talking about what we would have done differently, whether Carrie can even be called the main character of this show anymore, and pitch our new TV show, Steve & The City. The three AJLT eps will be spread across April, and then the normal Sentimental Garbage season will resume in May. Like you, we've been so distressed and heartbroken to see what has been happening in Ukraine, and so we've have both decided to donate all the proceeds from April to British Ukrainian aid. Dolly Alderton is back, and we're finally getting balls deep into And Just Like That. This is the first of THREE Sentimental in the City episodes covering the reboot, and while the show was famously uneven and a bit cringe in places, we still had a great time. In this episode we cover the first three episodes, discussing Big's death, Susan Sharon and Carrie's feud, the wasted potential of Gloria and Charlotte's inexplicable robot voice. Happy Valentine's Day everyone! We kick off our brand new season of weekly episodes with a dreamy chat about our favourite book crushes. Who did we fancy in books growing up? How do we feel about those crushes now, as adults? Is it okay to fancy Aslan? Why is The Secret Garden so sexy? And how do today's children's books broach the subjects of love and yearning differently to the classics? Two brilliant special guests join us for our season premiere: Caroline O'Donoghue is the host of the podcast Sentimental Garbage and author of the magical YA novel All Our Hidden Gifts. Kate Saunders is the author of Five Children on the Western Front which re-imagines E. Nesbitt's young heroes as older characters facing the spectre of war - and romance. Caroline has contributed to Grazia, The Irish Times, The Irish Examiner, Buzzfeed, Vice and The Times. Her first novel, Promising Young Women came out in 2018 she was shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards' Newcomer of the Year and other awards. Best-selling author Caroline O’Donoghue talks YA, feminism, and weaving the intriguing, mystical thread of tarot into a teenager’s world in her writing, with StoryMachine curator Janet Smyth. Caroline O’Donoghue’s YA debut was described as ‘Stranger Things meets Sabrina The Teenage Witch’. All Our Hidden Gifts is the story of Irish teenager Maeve Chambers, who has been lonely since falling out with best friend Lily. When she finds a tarot deck, Maeve discovers her gift for magic. Things are looking up – until she discovers a strange card in the deck that definitely shouldn’t be there. And two days after she convinces her ex-best friend to have a reading, Lily disappears. Caroline is an Irish author, journalist and host of the award-winning commercial women’s fiction podcast Sentimental Garbage. Her first novel Promising Young Women was shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards’ Newcomer of the Year and the Kate O’Brien Award. Part of a five-part series exploring diverse aspects of childrens’ literature.
You might’ve seen or read about a picture of Khloe Kardashian doing the rounds online this week. It's after the juggernaut Kardashian PR machine worked tirelessly to remove all traces of the image, which was apparently posted without Khloe's consent. The whole debacle has us wondering, have the Kardashians created a body and beauty standard even they can’t live up to? Plus, what is a 'digital leash'? Unions are pushing to let workers untether themselves from the job after hours, but is that a good thing? And, it's been 20 years since Bridget Jones's Diary hit cinemas around the world. How do we feel about Bridget, two decades on? THE END BITS Recommendations: Jessie wants you to listen to the podcast Sentimental Garbage. You can find it here. 'I wanted it to look like how it feels like, and how it feels to be Irish sometimes is that you are in a murder mystery.' Caroline O'Donoghue, host of Sentimental Garbage and author of Promising Young Women, Scenes of a Graphic Nature and the forthcoming YA novel All Our Hidden Gifts, tells Jess about playing with different genres, how some endings are too unbelievable to work, the inherent witchiness of being a girl, and how annoying it is for a movie to share your book's title. She also gives some stellar book recommendations for all those taking up this year's Audiobook Listening Challenge. If you enjoy this episode, consider leaving us a review. It's the first ever Sentimental Garbage mini-series: a big basket of episodes about Sex and the City! In this mini-series, author Dolly Alderton joins me as we spend each episode discussing every season of the TV show Sex and the City for the great American novel it truly is. This is not an episode by episode analysis but a look at each season as an individual piece of work, where we discuss the themes, character journeys and lasting messages of it. We examine the big thesis topics such as: The Corsage and Saddlebag Tragedy of Series Three, The Absence of Strap-ons in Sex and The City, and Big’s Weekend Shirts: Wide-fitting sleeves to house an absent soul. Crucially: we don't know the most about Sex and the City, we just feel the most about Sex and the City. Pour yourself a cocktail and ask yourself some huge questions about the McDougall family trust, and we’ll see you every Thursday for the next six weeks! (Plus maybe again for the movies, who knows) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week on the Corona Cast, Caroline and Ella discuss the ultimate smart lady holiday book (she's going to Split) American Wife! American Wife is a 2009 novel inspired by the life of Laura Bush, former First Lady and wife of George Bush junior. Here, we know her as Alice Blackwell. Beginning in the mid-west in the 1950s, we follow Alice from her quiet childhood to the car accident in her teens that killed her first crush and changed her life forever. After becoming a school librarian, she meets Charlie Blackwell at the barbecue of some mutual friends and begins a whirlwind romance that leads to a long marriage, and eventually, the White House. CONTENT WARNING: rape, fat shaming, homophobia, literally all possible triggers a person could have. This week it's another special edition of Sentimental Garbage, where we talk about the novels that are getting us through the corona virus! Today we’re talking about VALLEY OF THE DOLLS by Jacqueline SusannWhen twenty year-old Anne Welles moves from New England to New York in the summer of 1945, she’s pretty enough to be a model but settles for being a secretary at a theatrical agency. Here she meets a host of showbiz characters, including Neely, a vaudevillian teenager; Jennifer North, a starlet fresh from a marriage to an Italian prince; Helen Lawson, an ageing broadway star and Lyon Burke, a wannabe writer who she falls in love with. Over twenty years, the novel covers their rise and fall through show business, as each woman battles with age, men, and their mutual pill addictions. Is this the only Sentimental Garbage to win a Pulitzer? This week we talk to writer, editor and spiritual bottom Phil Ellis about Andrew Sean Greer's LESS, the funniest and sweetest novel to ever win a major literary prize. We talk about love, the struggles of freelance life, ageing while gay, being friends with your exes and why we're both so bad at spotting twists. The truly excellent queen of podcasts (and books and journalism and being sexy), Caroline O’Donoghue joins the Hot Mess Clubhouse this week. The hilarious author of Promising Young Women – as well as her upcoming novels, Scenes of a Graphic Nature and All Our Hidden Gifts – joins host Lucy Vine to discuss her work as a writer of books and articles, as well as her brilliant podcasts, Sentimental Garbage and School for Dumb Women. This week Andy is joined on Be Grand by writer, journalist and podcaster Caroline O’Donohue and becomes, quite possibly, his new best friend in the process. As the host of the championing chick-lit podcast Sentimental Garbage, Caroline is the ideal person to talk to about all the artistic guilty pleasures you enjoy but were too afraid to discuss lest you be judged. Andy takes full advantage of this to go on a deep dive about which Simpsons characters he and Caroline most closely resemble and also treat listeners to a world-first: a “Billy Zane-Off” Caroline also elaborates on what it’s as like to make the daunting move to London to follow her dreams and her “Frank Sinatra Moment” - the 2018 release of her debut novel Promising Young Woman. Settle in for a bumper packed edition of Be Grand but when you’re talking to someone as full of joy as Caroline, you gotta roll with it. You’re welcome to that ear worm. https://www.czaroline.com/ https://twitter.com/Czaroline
CW: addiction, anorexia, bulimia. They tried to make her go to rehab... and frankly, it was a good idea. This week we're talking about the most anticipated book ever on Sentimental Garbage, Rachel's Holiday. Marian Keyes' modern classic tells the story of Rachel, a deeply insecure Irish ex-pat who has developed a coke addiction while living in New York and becomes committed by her family to a rehab centre in her native Dublin. Our guest Louise O'Neill discusses her own experiences with addiction, recovery and society's expectations of what a Sober Woman should look like. Today we're talking to Queenie author Candice Carty-Williams about Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Americanah, a book that stands out on Sentimental Garbage for neither being sentimental nor garbage. In fact, it was very well reviewed from the moment it came out. However, this book has more in common with chick lit than you might expect. We talk about when sweeping romance meets cultural understanding, what it's like to write from a place of specificity, the second generation immigration experience, code-switching, masculinity in strong female houses, and why Alexa is a racist.
