Adapted in a light-hearted, comical style from a diverse set of genuine Medieval Arthurian Romances, this special Three Ravens retelling of the iconic 14th century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is our bonus miniseries for Advent 2024.Split into 25 parts, one for each day of December leading up to and including Christmas Day, the tale follows Gawain, a young knight in King Arthur's court who embarks on a rambling quest, packed with adventures, which takes him all around ancient Britain - a journey which begins at one Midwinter feast and ends at another, exactly one year later. In today's episode, Gawain encounters two very different figures: one who is afraid to die, and who dearly longs to. Along the way, the Knight of the Pentangle also names his dogs, enjoys some fruit, and, as the harvest begins, fears the onset of his own life's winter...The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. We had the pleasure of interviewing John Smith over Zoom video!Though he was dubbed the future of folk music by Pentangle's John Renbourn, singer-songwriter John Smith's unique synthesis of styles puts him halfway across the Atlantic. He once made an album driving round the Deep South, recording out of the boot of his car; but his new record The Living Kindis the real masterpiece in American atmospherics – a true musician's record, produced by Joe Henry, the man responsible for some of the subtlest Americana of recent times. At the start of 2022 they cooked up the idea for an intimate record together – “an acoustic album that sounded like Spirit of Eden”, Smith explains, referencing Talk Talk's 1988 classic. Along with John Martyn's Solid Air and Joni Mitchell's electro-acoustic odyssey Hejira, it was one of the three creative inspirations for The Living Kind.Like Hejira, the new album is a cohesive song-cycle that seems to be cast in one rich tone-colour, one powerful mood. At the start of the Covid pandemic, Smith's family suffered a cluster of personal crises in the space of three months. His mother began radiotherapy for breast cancer, his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and his wife lost a pregnancy which also endangered her life. The couple, who have a young daughter, sold their house in Sussex and relocated his parents from Spain to a new home, for treatment. After that, as he sings in his first single The World Turns, Smith had to “find a new way to feel”.Most of the songs were written in the space of just two months over Christmas last year: The Living Kind is an album made after, not in the midst, of a period of personal turmoil. It gets you right in the chest – the opener,Candle, captures the overwhelming strain of his father's diagnosis – but in its self-possession and curious positivity it feels like the culmination of many personal evolutions. The Living Kind owes much of its precision and confidence to its unique recording circumstances: it was cut over just four days in February 2023, in Joe Henry's remote home in Harpswell, Maine. With temperatures dropping to -25 outside, the band – a tight trio consisting of Henry's son Levon and bassist Ross Gallagher – didn't leave the house at all. You can hear the closeness, darkness and warmth in the new songs – the hunkeredness, the cocoon. It was the first live recording made in Joe's new “music room”, a space above the garage, and cutting a record there was a leap of faith as it was completely un-soundproofed: “if a truck came by, you'd have to stop recording”.But Henry's organic and spontaneous way of working has revolutionized Smith's own. Writing on his 1963 Martin and a new Mulecaster steel guitar, Smith tends to be led where his instrument takes him. He's always played acoustic guitars with pickups inside, and enhances the rich, three-dimensional sounds with an EBow: a vibrating magnet held above a guitar string, which produces a theremin-like wail. The Living Kind is an album from someone lucky enough to have the gift of music to help put life's greatest challenges into some kind of perspective: “I do feel without my guitar and without song-writing I would have lost my mind, many times” Smith says. Henry detected something new in his singing, a lack of self-consciousness, closer to live performance than he had ever heard him in the studio. We want to hear from you! There was a crippling blizzard in Iowa in April of 1973. Over a foot of snow fell, coupled with 50-70 mph winds. But, inside my dormitory at U of I, I was warmed by the eternal sunshine of Pentangle's evocation of the 12th century. The plangent voice of Jacqui McShee, accompanied by John Renbourn and Bert Jansch's jazz infused “baroque folk” sustained me throughout that challenging season. Not usually one to subscribe to any woo-woo, New Ageist practices, I nonetheless became convinced that I had lived before as a medieval troubadour - a sensation that recently resurfaced when I was introduced to the Witcher saga, because I strongly identified with Dandelion, that narrative's ironic balladeer. Ms. McShee was my gateway drug to the time-traveling vocal intoxications of Anne Briggs, Shirley Collins, Maddy Prior, June Tabor, Sandy Denny, Kate Rusby, and others. A.L. Lloyd and Richard Thompson became my “spirit guides” through the library of Child ballads; a path which eventually led me back home to the USA via Alan Lomax and Pete Seeger. Song research became my professional passion and mission. Willy O Winsbury (Child 100), a traditional Scottish ballad, has many variations and possible derivations, one of which originates in the recounting of James V's courtship and marriage to Madeleine de Valois of France. In Pentangle's deft retelling, Willy and Janet's love triumphs over shame and death. You cannot ask for more than that.

We didn't just write the summary as the title....Oh wait, maybe we did.  Greg is joined by James Pentangle, a "man" who recently discovered 3 years ago that his ancestry is connected to those that killed the witches and two dogs at the Salem Witch Trials. And further, he's traced his roots back to the 13 elite family bloodlines that rule over the entire globe.  But James has shed and denounced his New World Order connections, and has a message to spread to the masses about the trance we're all stuck in.  In this episode, James provides tips to get us back to a place in contemporary society where we can thrive again. We dare to ask questions like:  What is the Moon? How about the Mandela effect? Did Jesus exist? Is the Bible an occult grimoire? Can gamifying the act of setting your house on fire be fun for the whole family?  All these questions, answered. And a whole lot more. Y'all gonna loop real good. James Pentangle's YouTube Channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtcVyXttaU1apXbNPJQ8vzQ

On the latest Classic Album Sundays podcast, we step back to Camp Bestival from a few years ago when Nick Drake's producer Joe Boyd joined us to discuss ‘Five Leaves Left' in length with Colleen. Alongside Joe's production the album features Richard Thompson (of Fairport Convention) and Danny Thompson (of Pentangle) as well as the beautiful string arrangements of Robert Kirby. Despite being championed by John Peel, the album initially sold less than 6,000 copies. Now, over four decades since Drake's death, Five Leaves Left is seen as an iconic album in British Folk music and his songs are cited as an influence by Peter Buck of REM and Robert Smith of The Cure. This month we've gone back half a century to 1972, where only one of us exists, to talk about the best ear slicing soundtracks, epic prog, shiny glam, & spooky folk. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Aphrodite's Child, Big Star, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Can, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Nick Drake, Marvin Gaye, Genesis, Al Green, Hot Butter, Curtis Mayfield, Don McLean, Mott The Hoople, Harry Nilsson, The Osmonds, Pentangle, Lou Reed, The Rolling Stones, Slade, Roxy Music, Todd Rundgren, Stealers Wheel, Steeleye Span, Steely Dan, Sweet, Thin Lizzy, Yes, & Neil Young. Called by Record Collector “the most accomplished critical overview yet” of progressive rock and one of their 2011 books of the year, “Beyond and Before” moves away from the limited consensus that prog rock is exclusively English in origin and that it was destroyed by the advent of punk in 1976. Instead, by tracing its multiple origins and complex transitions, it argues for the integration of jazz and folk into progressive rock and the extension of prog in Kate Bush, Radiohead, Porcupine Tree and many more.In 2021, an updated and expanded edition of “Beyond and Before” was released. The 10-year anniversary revised edition continues to further unpack definitions of progressive rock and includes a brand-new chapter focusing on post-conceptual trends in the 2010s through to the contemporary moment. The new edition discusses the complex creativity of progressive metal and folk in greater depth, as well as new fusions of genre that move across global cultures and that rework the extended form and mission of progressive rock, including in recent pop concept albums. Every chapter is revised to keep the process of rethinking progressive rock alive and vibrant as a hybrid, open form.Paul Hegarty is Professor of French and Francophone Studies at the University of Nottingham, UK. He's the author and editor of 11 books that span critical and cultural theory, rock, experimental and noise music, as well as audiovisual art including 2007's “Noise/Music”, 2014's “Rumour and Radiation” and 2020's “Annihilating Noise” all published by Bloomsbury Academic. SHEL TALMY is one of the most innovative and influential record producers in popular music. It could be said, with a great deal of justification, that he created the SOUND of the 1960s. I'm talking about the power, the glory, the in-your-face gut punching power of rock. One thing you notice about Shel immediately is that you're talking to a very clever man with a brain the size of Jupiter that got him on the Quiz Kids TV show. He worked  for 3 years in television, and then worked as an engineer at Conway Recorders in LA where he was able to learn how things worked - and then improved on it. Urged to go to London by an English colleague, Talmy entered and then dominated the Swinging' scene like Julius Caesar conquering Gaul. History was made and remade again with hits by The Kinks and The Who, Manfred Mann, Pentangle, Lee Hazlewood and many more. So sit back and enjoy a chance to meet the creative force that is Shel Talmy. This is killer stuff and you only get this with Radio Richard. LIKE this video! SUBSCRIBE to our social media! Satnam Galsian remotely connected to tell me about her band Kinaara:"Kinaara are a Leeds trio exploring the connections between the music of Punjab and the West. Brought together by singer Satnam Galsian in 2018 they aim to achieve an identity that reflects both her Punjabi heritage and their UK upbringing as a whole. They began with the folk songs of Surinder Kaur and the popular songs of Noor Jehan which they infuse with John Hogg's electric guitar textures and the jazz inflections of drummer Simon Henry. The next stage was to bring in the songs from the West, songs of hope and betrayal, and plug them in. Pentangle, Elvin Jones and even The Velvet Underground have been said to be felt in the sound. Kinaara released their debut EP 'Across The River' in April 2021."http://www.kinaara.co.uk/https://www.facebook.com/kinaaraofficial/https://twitter.com/kinaaraofficial?lang=enhttps://www.instagram.com/kinaaraofficial/https://kinaaraofficial.bandcamp.com/album/across-the-riverhttps://linktr.ee/Kinaaraofficialhttps://linktr.ee/satnamgalsian

We're back to our time travelling shenanigans and have warped all the way back through time to 1968 where we've been protesting the Vietnam war, appearing as extras in George Romero's Night Of The Living Dead & hanging out with The Grateful Dead in Haight Ashbury. We've also been talking about Dog bothering Jazz, Prog gigs in Yorkshire steel mills, & Dumbledore's soggy gateaux. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - The Beatles, Big Brother & The Holding Company, Blue Cheer, James Brown, The Byrds, Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash, The Chocolate Watchband, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, Desmond Dekker, Marvin Gaye, Richard Harris, Jimi Hendrix, The Hollies, The Impressions, Iron Butterfly, Dr. John, Hugo Montenegro & His Orchestra, Nazz, Pentangle, Pink Floyd, Otis Redding, The Rolling Stones. Simon & Garfunkel, Small Faces, Steppenwolf, The United States Of America, Gary Walker & The Rain, Scott Walker, & Muddy Waters. Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1yZltcxPwAOGsfjtT9YhqX?si=-acWNA7oRROood8CCaBn4w&utm_source=copy-link The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows - 1st place - 20 points 2nd place - 18 points 3rd place – 16 points 4th place – 14 points 5th place – 12 points 6th place – 9 points 7th place – 7 points 8th place – 5 points 9th place – 3 points 10th place -1 point Hosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey B Guest starring Helen Jackson-Brown. Playlist compiling/distributing – Lydia Clarke Recorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig Podcasts Thanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system. When we think of music coming out of England in the 1960s, it's often in relation to the Mersey Beat, psychedelia, prog rock, or The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. England was also going through a folk music revival in a different way to the American one in the early sixties thanks to a number of artists who saw fit to combine the traditional songs of generations gone with a contemporary approach.Welcome to episode 134 of Love That Album podcast.I am joined once again, by blues guitarist and vocalist, Shane Pacey, to discuss the third album from English band Pentangle, Basket of Light, released in 1969. There were other great bands like Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention that were finding ways of mixing folk with rock. Pentangle had a jazz rhythm section, a guitarist in the blues tradition, a guitarist trained classically, and a singer who leaned in both a blues and folk direction. Recipe for chaos? Nope, because these were all seasoned musicians who knew how to blend their skills into a common vision.Shane and I talk about our earliest memories of the band, the individual members' other projects, and a whole mess of other related topics, while hopefully convincing you that Basket of Light is one of the great albums deserving of your attention.BUT WAIT...there's more.I spoke with British jazz flautist, Rowland Sutherland who'd been invited by the London Jazz Festival in 2019 to assemble a band and play Basket Of Light live in its entirety as a tribute to the album's 50th anniversary. We discussed Rowland's background, his other projects, and how he came to arrange these beloved Pentangle tunesOnce again, I am grateful to have Shane bring his knowledge and conversation to the show....LTA is all the better for his participation. Having Rowland talk about a project so near to his heart was an absolute treat. My gratitude to him as well for his time and insight. You can find Rowland's music and links to his recordings at http://www.rowlandsutherland.com/Please explore the music of Shane at both https://bondicigars.com/ and https://shanepaceytrio.com.au/Download this episode of LTA from Spotify, Stitcher or iTunes (search for “Love That Album podcast”).
