Not of This World: Daniel - "Sin Is Real; Grace Is Greater" (Daniel 9) We have seen that Daniel was in God's Word, but things were still chaotic around him. Daniel was a contemporary of Jeremiah, and he likely knew Jeremiah personally. Daniel acknowledges that Jeremiah is a prophet and views his writings as scripture. And, the words of Jeremiah had made their way to Babylon. Sin is not just a repressed, old-fashioned, out-of date, archaic idea that just robs people of fun, self-fulfillment, and freedom. According to the Bible, it is through sin that I finally begin to see and find the solution to my greatest need - repentance.

There is no way we can live an overcoming Christian life without the (real) grace of God and love of God. So maybe that's why the apostles gave really strong warnings about things that sounded like grace and love, but were nothing less than demonic counterfeits that destroyed people's lives.
In this bonus segment, Nate sits down with biblical counselor Ken Larkin to discuss some of the ways he studies the Bible, as well as some really helpful tools. -- Methods we discussed: Reading scripture in various translations (00:28) Looking at words in their original language (01:55) Word Studies (03:34) Scripture Memorization (06:35) --- Resources we mentioned: Fighter Verses Verses Blue Letter Bible ESword Bible Gateway

Ben continues our series in the book of John, preaching from John 7:53-8:11. To begin the sermon, Ben speaks on current scholarship on these verses and why they are relevant to our understanding of who Jesus is. We see in these verses that we have a perfectly righteous judge who has shown us mercy that we do not deserve. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMLeXc0bqtk
Will Smith and Chris Rock had an altercation during last night's Oscars but was it legit. Grace hears what callers have to say on the slap heard round the world.
This week, Pastor Javier Batista will continue the sermon series entitled "Real Righteousness" with a focus on Real Grace. Often times, we find ourselves combing over scriptures and find some that are hard to accept or even live up to. Join with us as we unpack the topic of Real Grace.
We all need real Grace and we all need to practice real Grace
Have you heard the name Sydney Carton? This character in Charles Dickens's acclaimed novel “A Tale of Two Cities” has everything to do with sacrificial grace. Carton is a man during the French Revolution who has a chance to stand-in for a condemned man. In this way, the man will be free to go on and live his life. Carton takes the other man's place, and is executed. It was common for Charles Dickens to write novels that reflect the Christian faith. Does Carton remind you of anyone? Ephesians 2:8 says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” Jesus is Carton, in a sense. Though the Messiah is infinitely more than a mere man. His sacrifice at the place of execution—the Cross—is an eternal reminder that there is One who loves us perfectly and without end. Sydney Carton did not have to do what he did. No one forced him. It was a choice. He saved one man. Jesus saved mankind. If you would like to meet Him, pray that God will give you discernment to accept the free gift of salvation from Jesus. Let's pray. Lord, Jesus is our Carton, for all time. And He is real, not fiction. Thank you that you show us true reality. Amen. Are you thirsty for more biblical encouragement in your day? Rev. Chris Hull, pastor at Zion Lutheran Church in Tomball, TX, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Judges 8:22-35. The threat from Midian has ended, but the threat of idolatry remains as Gideon’s leadership of Israel comes to an end. Though Gideon’s refusal of his own dynasty over Israel sounds pious, his deeds take him beyond the leadership the LORD’s Word had given him. As he receives the spoils of war, he goes beyond their proper use and crafts an ephod that becomes an idolatrous snare for him, his family, and Israel. Any such attempt to make something holy by our own ways must fail; only the Word of God can sanctify. Gideon’s family life foreshadows the coming faithlessness of Abimelech and those under his leadership, when idolatry in Israel only grows. Still, the LORD is gracious in giving rest from Midian. The end of Gideon’s life is a vivid reminder that the LORD’s forgiveness is real grace for real sinners. “Rebellion and Rescue” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Judges. This book is characterized by a familiar. As the generations after Joshua forget the LORD and what He has done for Israel, they fall into idolatry. The LORD gives them over into the hands of their enemies in order to bring them to their senses. When they cry out to Him in repentance, He sends a judge to rescue them and give them rest for a time, until they relapse into idolatry once more. In this cycle, we see a picture of our own Christian life. Daily, the old Adam in us is drowned in contrition and repentance, and the new man emerges in Baptismal forgiveness to live in righteousness and purity before God forever.

Reading from Pike and Hayward's Cases of Conscience, 1755 - The affections of the mind may be excited in a merely natural way under divine ordinances. The proof of this point will be best introduced by endeavouring to set be fore you some of those ways, in which mere nature may be impressed or raised under the means of grace. 1. The affections of the mind may be excited by a natural impression. Thus, when a person is attending upon the ministrations of the word, he may find himself moved only by the beauty of the style, or the propriety of the language, or by the loudness or tunableness of the preacher's voice, or the apparent fervency of his address. Such circumstances as these may move the affections in a way purely mechanical, without being attended with any spiritual or saving effects- for hereby only animal nature is touched, or the speculative powers employed, in a pleasing or disagreeable way.

Isn’t it ironic that Christians, the very people who believe in God, can struggle to know He’s there? We’ve all been there. What do you do when depression, disaster, or doubt creeps into your life? Join Pastor Dawit as he walks you through his own wrestling with the “hiddenness” of God in tough times, and how God’s Grace intersected. Bio: Dawit (David) Bokre serves as lead pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Hayward, CA. Born and raised in Eritrea, he moved to the U.S. at the age of 13. In 2008, Dawit planted an Eritrean Lutheran Church in Hayward. He then completed his theological training and was ordained in 2016. Today, he serves English and Tigrinya speaking groups at his church. Dawit and his wife, Saron, enjoy meeting new people, good coffee and cooking.

Jimmy Davis – Of all the things Peter could say to conclude his first letter to the churches, he chose to say, “Wake up church! The universe is at war.” So, what do we do? We resist the enemy now by standing firm in the good news that in Jesus God’s heart for us is good, while we wait for the restoration and glory that Jesus has promised will come.
Jimmy Davis - Church relationships can be beautiful or broken, often both at the same time. Too often we church folks treat one another as enemies. Peter knows this and exhorts the church’s shepherds and sheep to clothe themselves with humility toward one another, a humility that only comes from being under the mighty hand of our Chief Shepherd Jesus, who wrapped himself in humility for us, his enemies.
Candice talks with criminal justice activist and CNN commentator Van Jones about his new show, "The Redemption Project". She also discusses Jakes Divinity School, a theological institution created by Bishop TD Jakes, and the life and legacy of Rachel Held Evans.
Jimmy Davis - In 1 Peter 4:12-19, Peter reminds us that when we suffer ‘fiery trials’ for putting Jesus on display by the way we live and love, we are being refined by that suffering to put Jesus on display in that suffering.
Jimmy Davis - How is a church to live when time is running out? We pray, love, and serve like Jesus because He first loved us in His praying, loving, and serving.
Jimmy Davis - In 1 Peter 4:1-6, Peter casts a vision for the cross-shaped life. If our lives have been shaped BY the cross of Jesus, then they will take the shape OF the the cross of Jesus.
Jimmy Davis - Living the Jesus-shaped life of loving the way Jesus loves and suffering the way Jesus suffers requires us to rest in the ways Jesus reigns over the power of our sin, the power of death, the powers of darkness, and over every power forever.
Jimmy Davis - What’s the mission/vision statement for your marriage and family? Peter might suggest that marriage was created and redeemed to put Jesus on display to the world in the way wives and husbands relate to one another.

Real grace in it purity has to bring transformation. Grace enables us to run towards Jesus regardless of where we’re at and what we’ve done. Only false grace will lead us to believe that it’s okay to sin and get away with it. True grace will always bring hope and vision for a greater tomorrow. | To learn more about Todd White and the ministry of Lifestyle Christianity, visit lifestylechristianity.com. Jimmy Davis - In 1 Peter 2:18-25, Peter reminds us that Jesus, the Suffering Servant, is the pattern, pardon, and power for our suffering service in the workplace.
Jimmy Davis - As strange as it may seem and as difficult as it may be, Peter teaches us that one of the ways we show our submission to Jesus is to humbly, submissively serve under our civil authorities. This kind of exile lifestyle is only possible when we entrust ourselves to Jesus, who was subject to civil authorities in order to redeem our rebellious hearts.
Jimmy Davis - Jesus is the Cornerstone of God’s new temple. Believers adore Him, and are attached and aligned to Him as living stones. Now we serve as His holy priesthood for the glory of God and the good and gladness of the world.
Jimmy Davis - Since God has caused us to be ‘born again’ into His family we have a new way of loving in the world. We love one another earnestly, from a pure heart, without sibling rivalry. But since God has caused us to be ‘born again’ by His imperishable gospel, we also have imperishable power to love one another as Christ has loved us!
Jimmy Davis - Peter reminds us that as God’s Family we have a new way to live in the world: we live with a hopeful future, like our holy Father, and with a healthy fear.
Jimmy Davis - Peter reminds us that the real life of God’s elect exiles is patterned after the life of Jesus: suffering now but glory later. So how do God’s elect exiles live in the meantime? We live by faith, in hope, and for love.
Jimmy Davis - Why does Peter pack so much deep, heavy, theological, Jesus-soaked truth into the beginning of his letter? He’s a man who knows that as boats need a ballast to steady them in the storm, God’s people need the weighty, glorious real grace of God to steady them in the storms of real life.
Jimmy Davis - In order to encourage us to live the real life of who we are (exiles), Peter declares to us the real grace of whose we are (God’s elect).
Jimmy Davis - As we begin our journey through 1 Peter, we consider this: If I don’t see the real grace of God shining, even dimly, through the thick fog of my real life, I will end up in a ditch of despair. If I can’t see Jesus, I can’t keep going.
