This week on Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, fills the studio with Green for a discussion about parenting in the age of climate chaos! Our guests this week are Megan Green, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at Woven Nest Counseling and Coaching; and longtime local sustainability advocate, Jackie Green. Though unrelated, they are co-facilitators of a new free monthly workshop series coming up called “The Parent, Child and Climate Change.” It kicks off this weekend and will be held on third Saturdays, beginning February 21, 2026 from 2pm til 3pm at Highlands Community Ministries, 1228 E Breckinridge St (at Barret). Earth Home 40202, an initiative you heard about on this program back in October, is launching this supportive, empowering, health based, community building program for parents and older children. The program is free, but please let us know if you plan to attend by emailing earth.home.40202@gmail.com. Learn more about Earth Home 40202 at https://www.bikecourier.org/earth-home-40202/ or Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/people/Deep-Ecology-Louisville/61581836699217/ Parenting today happens in the context of constant uncertainty—climate change, social instability, economic stress—and our nervous systems are taking that in whether we name it or not. Climate anxiety isn't a disorder; it's a nervous system response to ongoing, unresolved threat. Our bodies are designed to detect danger, and climate change is a chronic, future-oriented stressor. Many parents are quietly carrying fear and grief about the world their children are inheriting. That often shows up as burnout, urgency, irritability, or feeling like they're never doing enough. Children sense the state of the adults around them. They don't need all the information, but they feel the regulation—or dysregulation—of the nervous systems caring for them. From a nervous-system lens, anxiety and behavioral struggles aren't signs of weakness or bad parenting; they're signals that the system is overwhelmed. Our mental and emotional health are deeply connected to our environment. Humans regulate better with access to nature, sunlight, rhythm, and sensory safety—we are not separate from the natural world. Environmental degradation impacts mental health not just psychologically, but physiologically. When the environment feels unsafe, nervous systems stay on high alert. A nervous-system perspective shifts the question from “What's wrong with parents or kids?” to “What has their nervous system been asked to carry?” Regulation and connection are foundational—not luxuries. When nervous systems are supported, people have more capacity for hope, care, and meaningful action. Slowing down, repairing relationships, and spending time in nature are not passive responses; they are stabilizing acts that support both individual well-being and collective resilience. Hope doesn't come from denying reality. It comes from feeling safe enough to face hard truths while staying connected to one another. Supporting parents' nervous systems is a form of future care—for children, communities, and the planet. Learn more about Megan at https://www.wovennest.net/woven-nest-therapy-team-louisville/megan-green-meyerhoffer As always, our feature is followed by your community action calendar for the week, so get your calendars out and get ready to take action for sustainability NOW! Husker Doc Talk
2026 Episode 4: Barret Liebentritt-From Notre Dame To Nebraska

Husker Doc Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 8, 2026 63:49

The Husker Doc Talk Podcast with Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka welcomes a guest Husker fans are going to enjoy: former Nebraska fullback Barrett Liebentritt. Before the interview even starts, the guys go on a classic Doc Talk tangent—this time sparked by Rob sending Travis a “strange times, strange places” text… from the campus of Grand View University in Des Moines. That turns into a fun (and surprisingly informative) conversation about NAIA athletics, wrestling weekends, and why Rob is basically fluent in Olympic and Big Ten wrestling while Travis is… not. Then it's time for the main event: Barrett's journey from being a Husker fan who wanted Nebraska first, to landing at Notre Dame during the weirdest recruiting era imaginable—COVID. Barrett explains what it was like to choose a high-level football path without camps, visits, or the normal recruiting process… and how his first real look at Notre Dame's facilities happened when he literally showed up for school. From there, Barrett gets candid about the reality of being a walk-on at Notre Dame, the culture divide between scholarship guys and walk-ons under Brian Kelly, and the “wait… that's it?” moment when Kelly left for LSU—an exit Barrett says felt abrupt, cold, and very “business first.” On the flip side, he shares why Marcus Freeman made such a strong impression and why players were fired up when Freeman took over. The heart of the episode is Barrett's decision to come back home. He breaks down what pulled him to Nebraska—Matt Rhule's vision, the idea of using a true fullback, and the chance to wear the N. The conversation expands into the modern state of college football: NIL, the portal, roster limits, and whether development-first coaching can still win in today's “plug-and-play” world. And because this is Husker Doc Talk, you also get a ton of personality: ACT score trash talk, “stab lab” stories from dental school, beer-at-10-a.m. debate, and Barrett's future plans as he pursues dentistry at UNMC—plus the sobering reality of the injury that ended his playing career early. It's funny, real, and packed with insight on football, life, and the changing college landscape—exactly what Doc Talk does best. This week, the EAH team sat down with Aran Bates, Founder and CEO of Hydrologiq, to dive into the strategic deployment of hydrogen in the off-grid sector. We explore how Hydrologiq is moving beyond just the hardware, discussing the critical role of software and systems thinking in scaling up clean fuel adoption. Aran provides fascinating insights into distributed decarbonisation and the future of resilient microgrids. The conversation focuses on the synergy between Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and hydrogen, detailing the "hub-and-spoke" model that is revolutionizing how we power remote sites, temporary setups, and events—including a fun look at the hydrogen deployment at Boomtown Fair. Aran explains how their platform, Logiq, is the essential tool for managing multi-technology fleets and simplifying the hydrogen supply chain. It was a truly valuable chat, underscoring that the transition to hydrogen is as much about Logiq's operational efficiency as it is about the fuel itself.About Hydrologiq:Hydrologia makes hydrogen the turnkey, scalable and immediate diesel replacement for off-road machinery - decarbonising a US$327 billion global diesel machinery market that produces 1.3 gigatons of CO2e every year. They do this through Logiq - the platform that handles everything from supply chain integration to on-the-ground operations, making hydrogen an easy to adopt and scale decarbonisation choice.Born out of a passion to reduce the greenhouse gas impact society is having on the planet, they are enabling the hydrogen value chain to change how we store, move and use energy off-grid.About Aran Bates:Aran's experience sits at the intersection of technical development, business, and strategy gained over eight years of technology and innovation consulting, as well as start-up experience. Prior to Hydrologiq he spent two and a half years evaluating and studying the applicability of hydrogen on energy systems, now through the work being done at Hydrologiq, they are testing and proving that hydrogen is an answer.Previously, Aran founded his own digital start-up, bootstrapping it into an operating business within a year; launched new ventures inside of existing multinational businesses (e.g. designed and lead all aspects of the physical product and manufacturing for Holland and Barret's Healthbox offering, taking it from pure paper idea to live product in market MVP in three months); and advised many of the world's largest corporates on innovation, including acting as the direct advisor and coach to the global Head of Innovation at Rolls Royce Aerospace.--

You might not believe it, but the Joshua Tree has a strange little part to play when recounting the history of the American West and Westward Expansion and Barret is here to tell us about it.In addition to Yuck, he has also authored some more strange nonfiction--China Lake, his debut novel, is about one of the strangest places in America: China Lake, which is the US Navy's largest single landholding. Hi. Spaff here. Some kids want to grow up to be President or cure cancer. My goal was to get a song on the Dr. Demento Show. I listened to it faithfully every Sunday night, often with headphones so my mom wouldn't overhear songs like "Making Love in a Subaru." In the early 2000s I somehow convinced Robert Lund, a Salt Lake radio personality, to record some of my song parody ideas, all of which I immediately sent to Dr. Demento. On November 28, 2004, he played "I Want Some Plastic Surgery for Christmas." I was giddy. Robert and I have since collaborated on over a hundred songs, and Dr. Demento has played a number of them. I remain giddy. So here's another. It's a tribute to Dr. Demento via a list of songs from the days he hooked me. (Needless to say, he has played countless more effing awesome comedy songs in the intervening years, some of which were created by the people reading this.) It's a parody of "Ripple," a song the Grateful Dead wrote and recorded in 1970, the year Barret Hansen became Dr. Demento. Pass the claret to me, Barret! May you forever stay demented. ~~~ CREDITS: Turns out Robert owns mandolins (plural) and has played them his whole life. Also he sang and played guitar and produced this recording. "Ripple" has lyrics by Robert Hunter and music by someone named Jerry Garcia. Dr. Demento brought all of these comedy songs to our attention, and the legendary titles listed here are the brain children of their various legendary parents. BUT I DID EVERYTHING ELSE.

Episode 560 - Barret Baumgart - Yuck - turning your Joshua Tree vacation into a terrifying revelationBarret Baumgart is an essayist, screenwriter, and the author of the nonfiction books China Lake and YUCK. His essays have appeared in The Paris Review, The Gettysburg Review, The Iowa Review, The Rumpus, Vice, LitHub, The Seneca Review, and The Literary Review, among others. He lives in Los Angeles.Book: Yuck: The Birth & Death of the Weird & Wondrous Joshua Tree, Yucca brevifoliaAre you headed to Joshua Tree this summer? Get ready to hate your life. It's not the heat that will wilt your spirit, nor the choke of traffic waiting to trample the park, but the enduring grotesquerie of its cherished namesake, the Joshua Tree."One can scarcely find a term of ugliness that is not apt for this plant... A landscape filled with Joshua Trees has a nightmare effect even in broad daylight: at the witching hour it can be almost infernal." -Joseph Smeaton Chase, 1919Similarly, few terms exist that do not fit Barret Baumgart's appalling YUCK. Part prose poem, pamphlet, collage, history, essay, memoir, and fiction, YUCK is a grotesque malformation beset with uncanny connections, jarring juxtaposition, and a buried true history that will have you asking yourself the big questions, particularly... Why am I here?Who knows, but here you are... in the weird and wondrous world of YUCK, a brief and searing ode to the world's hottest desert, the Mojave, its divine and dying mascot, Yucca brevifolia, and the magical land that killed it all, Los Angeles. From the publisher:YUCK presents an unsettling new history of one of the most loathed and beloved objects on the planet, the Joshua Tree, Yucca brevifolia. It primarily focuses on the discovery, naming, and attempted eradication of the Joshua Tree beginning in the late 1870s in Southern California. The Joshua Tree was universally reviled as the most grotesque object on earth following its discovery by white Europeans in the 1840s. Numerous schemes arose to extirpate it from the planet, the most promising among them an attempt to turn the tree into paper, "California Cactus Paper" [YUCK is, of course, printed on faux CA Cactus Paper]. The book excavates this unknown, buried history against the ironic backdrop of the Joshua Tree today becoming the ultra-hip signifier of some kind of cultural authenticity, and its national park the most photographed and fastest growing in the nation #JoshuaTree. This current popularity boom, in a further irony, is occurring just as scientists warn that the tree will likely vanish due to climate change by the end of the century.https://www.barretbaumgart.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca
