We can learn from the early church what we should and should not do. The letter to Ephesus in Revelation 2 reminds us to resist false teaching and idolatry but not to fall into legalism or salvation by works. Remember your first love!

We have great theologians who have looked at these 7 churches found in Revelation Chapters 1-3; that we call the last 7 churches in Revelation and they have explained them in detail, in sermons and in books and you name it. I chose because podcasts are so small when it come to literary works, I chose to just pick the items that God said the churches needed to fix. I think that would be more effective for our churches today, if we would allow God to help us fix what's wrong and don't fret over what's right. Don't spin our Wheels trying to tell another church how to live before God let the Holy Spirit do that as he did with the 7 churches of Paul's day. God's Church could grow through leaps and bounds!Listen, for those of us who are already in God's Church that tells me we did something right, you agree? So from the council of the Holy Spirit let's fix that which is wrong. The Holy Spirit spoke to the 7 churches in Revelation: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea; he spoke to them, admonishing them to hold fast to the good, and only required them fix where they have backslid. You see the Holy Spirit is the right one to tell us where we need to return, or turn and do the right thing; because he is our teacher, the Spirit of Truth and as he admonishes us to do the right things, let us focus wholly on doing just that, the right things!Contact: heavensprayerlink.com, we love to pray with you, God bless you ReplyForward --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/heavensprayerlink/support

I complained to God that our new building, as it stands now, is just an empty shell, and useless. The phrase seemed to echo in my mind. This week we will look at three of the seven churches of Revelation: Ephesus, Sardis, and Laodicea, and see Christ's warnings to churches that were in various stages of becoming empty shells of a church.

The Lord begins His message for this flagship church by affirming them for three things. The Lord Commends: Deeds This was an energetic, hard-working Church. Forty years earlier, the Apostle Paul planted this church and discipled them for three years. As a result, the Ephesians were solid in their spiritual disciplines. They worked hard to spread the gospel throughout Asia Minor. In fact, all the other churches of Revelation owed their beginnings to the church at Ephesus. PerseveranceUnder the pressure of persecution, the Ephesian church stood strong. They didn't compromise.DiscernmentThis church had been taught well doctrinally. They were able to discern truth from error. When false teachers tried to worm their way in, claiming apostolic authority, the Elders in the Ephesian church sniffed out the deception. But then come these chilling words: “Yet I hold this against you…” (vs. 4) The Lord Condemns:“You have left your first love.”Relationships always tend toward disconnectedness. This is true not only of horizontal relationships but also of our relationship with God. Without real effort and specific plans, our once passionate relationship with Christ can…and will…be lost. It becomes more about duty and discipline and less about love and delight. So, what does Jesus tell them to do about that? The Lord Commands: Remember How do you regain a love that has been lost? One way is to reflect on how your relationship with Jesus began and what it was like then. Ask yourself, when did that change? Why did it change? Did something or someone else captivate your heart? Repent Repentance is a change of mind born of a deep sense of regret. Recognize the damage done, ask for the Lord's forgiveness, and commit to do things differently. Take Action Don't wait for the feelings to return before you act. Warm feelings typically flow out of solid action. Do the things that help you connect in loving, joyful ways with the Lord. Prioritize them. If you don't, the Lord says basically, it'll be “lights out.” Your deeds become lifeless. Your devotion becomes legalistic. Your discernment becomes angry.Yet, for the one who listens, who heeds Jesus' warning, He promises a taste of heaven. Listen in as we begin a news series looking at the seven churches of Revelation. Notes//Quotes: Revelation 2:1-7 “The book of Revelation really is about the future, but what is says does not satisfy our curiosity or match what we think are the obvious things to say. It is not a disclosure of future events but the revelation of their inner meaning. It does not tell us what events are going to take place and the dates of their occurrence; it tells us what the meaning of those events is. It does not provide a timetable for history; it gives us an inside look at the reality of history. It is not prediction but perception. It is, in short, about God as he is right now. It ups the veil off our vision and lets us see what is taking place. - Eugene Peterson The Pattern: Who He is (Character) How it's going (evaluation) Promises made (conquering/overcoming) I have set eyes on the wall of lofty Babylon on which is a road for chariots, and the statue of Zeus by the Alpheus, and the hanging gardens, and the colossus of the Sun, and the huge labour of the high pyramids, and the vast tomb of Mausolus; but when I saw the house of Artemis that mounted to the clouds, those other marvels lost their brilliancy, and I said, "Lo, apart from Olympus, the Sun never looked on ever so grand.” - Antipater of Sidon Rev 2:2-3 “The theology that matters is not the theology we profess but the theology we practice.” - Francis Chan “Jesus's command to follow him is a command to align our loves and longings with his—to want what God wants, to desire what God desires, to hunger and thirst after God and crave a world where he is all in all.” - James K.A. Smith Matthew 24:12 Jesus is a teacher who doesn't just inform our intellect but forms our very loves. He isn't content to simply deposit new ideas into your mind; he is after nothing less than your wants, your loves, your longings. - James K.A. Smith “In any relationship, there will be frightening spells in which your feelings of love dry up. And when that happens you must remember that the essence of marriage is that it is a covenant, a commitment, a promise of future love. So what do you do? You do the acts of love, despite your lack of feeling. You may not feel tender, sympathetic, and eager to please, but in your actions you must BE tender, understanding, forgiving and helpful. And, if you do that, as time goes on you will not only get through the dry spells, but they will become less frequent and deep, and you will become more constant in your feelings. This is what can happen if you decide to love. Actions of love lead to feelings of love.” Tim Keller

We're in Revelation chapter 2 today, continuing our study of what some call the “Loveless Church” in the book of Revelation: Ephesus. A bit of biblical history reveals that some thirty years before, this same early church had been commended for their love. So what happened? Like today, is there a tendency to walk away from faith in Christ? Pastor Mark will help us answer these questions and more on today's Moody Presents as we seek a spiritual wake up! Unveiled: A study in Revelation - Ephesus, February 7, 2021 with Adam Richardson
Sermon by Pastor Corky Calhoun
The tree of life in the Garden -Paradise- of God was a real place and the tree of life in the paradise of God is too a real place. It is not spiritualized state or condition in the kingdom of God.
When our love to the Lord and fellow believer we need to remember our initial love to the Lord and repent of our languid condition. There cannot be close fellowship with the Lord unless we are daily reading and enjoying the Word of God. Equally, the overcomer is not some special believer separate and apart from others. All of the people of God are overcomers.
While it is essential that the congregation be orthordox and skillful in exposing false prophets, it must not be at the expense of leaving our love to the Lord and His saints. When a congregation stops loving each other they quit loving God. Those who criticize and avoid believers that they don't like are speaking volumes regarding the state of their heart.
Whoever carried the letter for John had to take it to someone who knew about the congregation and how to get the message to them. Who better than the pastor or minister of the congregation- Also, it is the Lord that knows the works of all His saints and they will not go unnoticed.
The congregations of Asia Minor listed in the book of Revelation were real congregations with real people living in real cities. They were not representative cities depicting a time in history. The congregation at Ephesus was the same one established by Paul as given in the book of Acts. Each message to each congregation was to be considered by all of the other congregations as the Scriptures are for the people of God in every age. There were not seven letters to seven congregations, but one letter to seven congregations.
The congregation of Ephesus was founded by the Apostle Paul over a period of years, and while living there and building up the congregation the other congregations were greatly influenced by the ministry of Paul. Acts 19-10 tells us that during Paul's teaching in the school of Tyrannus for two years people from all -Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.-

On the External the Church of Ephesus seems to be a model church, but, when we read Christ's words we see that the church had a deeper internal problem. This church left their first love.
7 Churches of Revelation: Ephesus (Revelation 2:1-7) *Sermon starts at 28:40 of the video
Revelation 2:1-7“To the angel of the church in Ephesus, write the following:“This is the solemn pronouncement of the one who has a firm grasp on the seven stars in his right hand—the one who walks among the seven golden lampstands: ‘I know your works as well as your labor and steadfast endurance, and that you cannot tolerate evil. You have even put to the test those who refer to themselves as apostles (but are not), and have discovered that they are false. I am also aware that you have persisted steadfastly, endured much for the sake of my name, and have not grown weary. But I have this against you: You have departed from your first love! Therefore, remember from what high state you have fallen and repent! Do the deeds you did at the first; if not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place—that is, if you do not repent. But you do have this going for you: You hate what the Nicolaitans practice—practices I also hate. The one who has an ear had better hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers, I will permit him to eat from the tree of life that is in the paradise of God.’

Do I listen when Scripture warns? Sermon series on biblical trustworthiness. Sermon 8 We're going to finish this series by studying two very short letters today and next week. Perhaps you could call them “postcards from John.” These letters are succinct, but they are no less potent in their instruction and warning as the rest of Scripture. Second John is addressed to the “elect lady” and various interpretations have been suggested. Most think it is just a special way of referencing the Church. It could also be a reference to a woman - and since no husband is mentioned perhaps a widow - whom John knows. The words elect lady are Elekta Kuria… perhaps that is a woman's name.Third John is addressed to Gaius - clearly an individual (and elder) in the Church, so it seems likely that 2 John is written to an individual, but both are intended to be read to the Church.2 John ends with John's intention to visit in person, explaining that there is much he wants to communicate. Apparently everything else he wants to say can wait until a face-to-face meeting. What he has written in this letter could not wait. The second half of the letter contains a warning and ends with a very practical admonition: If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting. verse 10 It seems likely then that this is a widow who was hospitable to traveling preachers and opened her home to them. John may have been one of those preachers that has lodged with her. This letter warns against deceivers and how to deal with them and maintain the command to love one another. This letter's instruction is both timely and relevant and I'm looking forward to studying it together. Back to verse 1.An Explanation of the new old commandment of Truth and Love 1-6Reading the first six verses you will be struck by two words. And I think that is John's point. Those words are Truth and Love. There is loving in the truth 1a, knowing the truth 1b, truth abiding in and with us 2, in truth we received grace, mercy, and peace 3, and walking in truth 4. Truth is an important subject for John and it should be to us as well. The second word is just as significant to John: we love those who are in and know the truth 1-2, in love we received grace, mercy, and peace 3, loving one another is a new and old command 5, love is defined as walking according to His commandments 6.Truth and love are presented as harmonious in 2 John and yet so often they are pitted against each other in practice. The Church has too often emphasized one at the expense of the other. John names two Churches in the second chapter of Revelation: Ephesus, which stood withstood false teaching (they knew the truth), but they lost their first love. Thyatira, on the other hand, was known for their love and good works, but they allowed false teaching to creep into the Church and lost Truth.Today too many Churches sacrifice Truth on the altar of love. They have redefined Scripture to allow things that Scripture plainly teaches against.John gives us a the very clear command: we are to love one another. This is not a new idea… The Old Testament taught us to love… love the Lord your God. Love your brother as yourself. That's what Jesus quoted. Loving one another is not a new concept. But on the other hand… Jesus was a perfect representation of that love… and that was new. Mankind had never seen God's love so clearly as when Jesus walked the earth and loved people unconditionally. So when Jesus commanded us to love one another - it was like a new commandment. It's a new old command! We are to love one another. Now verse 6 is great… because love is defined as obedience to His commands. Here is the balance that is taught in the first six verses: God's truth teaches us to love one another. Loving one another is to obey God. We walk in truth and love those that walk in truth. We received love and truth from God. We delight in those that walk in truth and love them. It work, right? This is what we aim for.A Warning against deceivers and a practical application. 7-11The John gets real pointed: There are many deceivers in the world. Can we just pause there? Today's evangelical emphasis on love completely ignores this fact: there are MANY deceivers. Not just a few. They don't pop up here and there, every once in a while. No… there are many deceivers. What do they do? They don't confess, they are antichrist, and they go too far in their doctrine.I find that first one to be insightful. Deceivers aren't always identified by what they do say… sometimes it's what they don't say… they don't believe a key doctrine. The second is shocking… they work against that which Christ wants to accomplish… since Christ is working in the Church, they are working against the Church (see verse 8). Finally, they are described as going too far in their doctrinal thinking. They develop theologies and teachings that seem inventive, but are no longer orthodox. They teach a doctrine that has gone too far.Now how do you deal with such teachers? Scripture teaches us to love one another and we're to obey that command, right? Not in this case… John says to avoid them, beware of them, and then very practically: don't be hospitable to them. Close your door to them. Do not fellowship with them. Don't even greet them. Wow… how is that love?It is loving to show them their abandonment of truth... Truth divides… Jesus said that. And truth is serious business. So:Love one another in accordance with the new old commandKnow the truth in order to recognize the deceiverWalk in truth in order to separate from the deceiver and antichrist
