Host: Mindy McCulley, MS Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Specialist for Instructional Support, University of Kentucky Guest: Monica Mundy, PhD Assistant Extension Professor for Family and Community Health Season 8, Episode 33 This is Talking FACS with host Mindy McCulley and guest Dr. Monica Mundy. In this episode we explore how civic engagement directly impacts individual and community health. What comes to mind when you think of civic engagement? In this episode we will push the boundaries of what many people think civic engagement is and share the health benefits you can enjoy. Topics include research-backed health benefits (longer life expectancy, lower rates of heart disease, depression, and even some cancers), how community involvement builds social connection, resilience, and local decision-making power, and real-world examples like community responses to public health crises. Dr. Munday shares five simple steps to get involved: stay informed, join groups, speak up, volunteer, and bring others along. She pairs these steps with practical ideas such as food bank volunteering, PTAs, and neighborhood cleanups. Listeners are encouraged to pick one action and connect with local FCS Extension resources to start making a difference. This week, the tables are turned for our guest, Neil Munday, founder of the Sterling Business Podcast and a key property developer in Stirling, as Jerry catches up with him about his most ambitious project to date: the multi-faceted commercial redevelopment at 45 King Street. Neil shares the fascinating story of how he leveraged his extensive corporate background to tackle this complex, mixed-use commercial development, and the valuable—and sometimes painful—lessons he learned along the way.
First up on the podcast, Online News Editor David Grimm joins host Sarah Crespi for a rundown of online news stories. They talk about lichen that dine on dino bones, the physics of the lip-out problem in golf, and a brain-computer interface that can decode a tonal language (Chinese) from brain waves. Next on the show, Jeremy Munday, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at University of California, Davis, talks about generating mechanical power using a heat engine aimed at the night sky. Heat engines typically generate power by harnessing a temperature difference between two things—but by using space as the cold part and the ground as the warm part, Munday's device can generate energy at night. This week's episode was produced with help from Podigy. About the Science Podcast Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week we're diving into the disciplines of being an intentional disciple-maker. Just like Paul discipled Timothy, he connected with him both personally and culturally, using the examples of a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer. We are called to disciple others, no matter their background or past mistakes, because of the promise of victory, the vision of winning, and the hope of a harvest. Disciple-making is always worthwhile when our goal is to glorify God, win people to Christ, and one day live eternally with Him. Remember: no past experience is beyond redemption. The church grows when YOU share your story!
How we see the world shapes how we feel, and transforms the way we live. Seeing how things were framed by James, the brother of Jesus, gives us a perspective that is meant to mature our faith. James points out that the struggle is real for us, but we also have an opportunity to experience great joy and gain endurance through troubled circumstances. James urges us to stay humble and hold loosely to our plans. Life is fast, so aligning our plans with God's will is essential in building a healthy framework for our lives. We can't wait to see what God has for each and every one of us in The Book of James. The heartbeat of Church on the Rock is to help people discover how they can LOVE God and LOVE one another, LIVE with passion, purpose and freedom, and LEAD others to this same experience in Jesus. We simply say, “helping others Love, Live, and Lead in Jesus".
