Magopeni has been given until midday today to hand over all SABC property in her possession. She has however expressed an intention to challenge her dismissal. Civil Society organisation Right2Know (R2K) Campaign picketed at the Union Buildings, in Pretoria, on Wednesday to demand that spies who have illegally infiltrated civil society organisations are held accountable. In 2019, President Cyril Ramaphosa publicly released a redacted version of a High-Level Review Panel Report on the State Security Agency (SSA) which revealed that there were a wide range of ‘rogue' spying on and in some cases infiltrating civil society organisations, unions, student movements, and the media. The panel, led by Dr Sydney Mufumadi, found that former President Jacob Zuma and Ministers he appointed, including Siyabonga Cwele and David Mahlobo, as well as senior staff at the SAA, violated the Constitution by overseeing and allowing the repurposing of the spy agency to serve their own personal and political interests - a process that started in 2005. R2K Campaign said the report's recommendations have yet to be implemented. “Subsequent to the release of the report, albeit a redacted version, we have consistently been calling for the implementation of the recommendations as outlined in the report. It is worrying that two years after the release of the report no one has been held to account so far and the implementation of the recommendations remains stalled,” it said. Former Minister of State Security Dipuo Letsatsi-Dube assured South Africans in 2019 that those who had been implicated would be held accountable. “In demanding justice and ensuring that the spies that were implanted to illegally infiltrate our movement, the Right2Know Campaign will be embarking on a picket action today at the State President's office to demand that the spooks be unmasked and held accountable. We will not rest until all those implicated, from the highest level, are brought to book to account for their illegal spying on and infiltration of our movement and others,” Right2Know Campaign said.

Breaches include prohibitions on intimidation, the spreading of false information and plagiarism. Speaking to Radio Islam International, Lazola Kati from Right2Know, a Disinformation Project coalition partner, explained that the coalition's work would inform, educate, monitor, report, and assess and understand.

The Right2KNow Campaign has called on the SABC to find other sources of funding rather than letting workers bear the brunt of mismanagement of the past administration. The organisation says it is concerned that the dispute between the public broadcaster management and unions has escalated to the point of a looming strike. This as the Communication Workers Union has served the SABC management with a 48 hour notice to strike. Meanwhile, Labour union BEMAWU has applied to the Labour Court to interdict the retrenchments.

The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has reviewed and set aside the findings of Seriti commission. The commission cost the tax payer about R140 million. Civil organisations, Right2Know and Corruption Watch argued that Judge Willie Seriti's 2016 findings misled the public by exonerating politicians and public servants in wrongdoing during the arms deal saga. R2K says it believes the commission was selective in choosing who would testify or present evidence. Handing down judgement, Judge President Dunstan Mlambo said that the commission failed to probe certain pieces of crucial evidence. The Right2Know campaign says it welcomes changes promised by the Minister of State Security Letsatsi-Duba, to reform the State Security Agency, and improve oversight over the 'spooks'. R2K says such changes are long overdue, alleging that South Africans have seen securocrats run amok, spying on activists, whistleblowers and journalists, while hiding behind secrecy, and engaging in widespread corruption. The Right2Know campaign also says it is shocking that the Minister has sought to revive the Cybercrimes & Cybersecurity Bill, which promises to regulate social media and criminalise messages which the state deems to be 'fake news'. CliffCentral.com — On the one hand, President Zuma and his government made up of Dlamini, Mahlobo, Zwane, etc. is a democratically elected government that represents the will of the people. On the other hand, these very politicians are leading from crisis to crisis with no sense of accountability. Even the so-called Chapter 9 institutions seem powerless. Andrew and Rori explore the sense of powerlessness they feel as citizens and ask Nomaceba Mbayo from Right2Know and Rafael Friedman from the Helen Suzman Foundation what citizens can do to claim their power back.

Media Freedom Organiser at Right2Know, Micah Reddy, joins Rori to help explain whether what the SABC is doing is censorship.
