More than 1,000 people gathered in a scenic Minneapolis neighborhood for an annual ritual—the sharpening of a gigantic No. 2 pencil. The 20-foot-tall (6-meter-tall) pencil was sculpted out of a mammoth oak tree at the home of John and Amy Higgins. The beloved tree was damaged in a storm a few years ago when fierce winds twisted the crown off. Neighbors mourned. A couple even wept. But the Higginses saw it not so much as a loss, but as a chance to give the tree new life. The sharpening ceremony on their front lawn has evolved into a community spectacle that draws hundreds of people to the leafy neighborhood on Lake of the Isles, complete with music and pageantry. Some people dress as pencils or erasers. In the wake of the storm, the Higginses knew they wanted to create a sculpture out of their tree. Given the shape and circumference of the log, they came up with the idea of an oversized pencil standing tall in their yard. “Why a pencil? Everybody uses a pencil,” Amy Higgins said. “Everybody knows a pencil. You see it in school, you see it in people's work, or drawings, everything. So, it's just so accessible to everybody, I think, and can easily mean something, and everyone can make what they want of it.” John Higgins said they wanted the celebration to pull the community together. “We tell a story about the dull tip, and we're gonna get sharp,” he said. “There's a renewal. … And that chance for renewal, that promise, people really seem to buy into and understand.” Like a real pencil, this one is ephemeral. Every year they sharpen it, and it gets a bit shorter. They have taken anywhere from 3 to 10 inches (8 to 25 centimeters) off a year. They haven't decided how much to shave off this year. They are okay knowing that they could reduce it to a stub one day. The artist said they will let time and life dictate its form—that is part of the magic. According to a study from AIB, golf Tourism leads to 220,000 people visiting this country every year. Furthermore, golfers spend three times as much on their holiday here than any other type of tourism. This chimes with a separate study from Golf Ireland which says the sport adds €717m in gross value added to the economies on both sides of the border. Michaux State Forest is the place I spend the most time outdoors. Located about 30 miles from where I live, it's where I hike and camp. It's where I bring visitors to show off the South Mountain region. It's where I breath in fresh air and explore the beauty of the Commonwealth. It's my safe place away from the goings-on of Harrisburg. But that safety was shattered in April 2025. I received text messages from friends telling me that Michaux was on fire. Then, news came that there were two fires. And they were spreading. With wind and no rain in the forecast it became evident that the situation could get bad quickly.Over the following two weeks, I'd see photos and videos of the fires spreading across the forest I loved. Friends were evacuated from their homes. Roads were closed. Massive clouds of smoke billowed across the area. People were scared. The beautiful landscape I loved was on fire and there was nothing I could do but watch. But thanks to incredibly brave firefighters and with a little help from the weather, the Thompson Hollow and Hammond Rocks fires were extinguished in 14 days. Over 150 fire companies from 10 Pennsylvania and Maryland counties battled the blaze. Approximately 2,700 acres were destroyed by the wildfires. Luckily, no homes or private property was damaged and only two people suffered minor injuries. And, predictably, a determination was made that the fires were human caused, like 99 percent of all wildfires.Here's the thing. While the situation was scary for many in the area – even for us 40 minutes from the fires – this is a common occurrence in Pennsylvania. There's between 1,000 and 2,000 wildfires every year in Commonwealth. And the majority of those wildfires occur in the spring. These fires so close to home was a sobering reminder of the ever-present danger of wildfires. With Michaux still charred from the fires, I wanted to know more about wildfires and the wildland firefighters that have to put them out. On this episode, I speak with Mike Kern. In Berkeley Talks episode 225, The Atlantic journalists Yoni Appelbaum and Jerusalem Demsas discuss the decline of housing mobility in the United States and its impact on economic opportunity in the country. Appelbaum, author of the 2025 book Stuck: How the Privileged and the Propertied Broke the Engine of American Opportunity, began by tracing the history of housing mobility in the U.S. and its rapid decline in recent decades. He noted that in the 19th century, one out of three Americans moved to a new residence every year, and as late as 1970, one in five did. Today, only one in 13 people in the U.S. pack up their things and find a new place to live on an annual basis. “These constant moves in America, made possible by the constant construction of new housing, created a new kind of social order,” said Appelbaum, and most people “ended up better off for it.” The sharp decline in residential relocation, he said, caused largely by rising housing costs and restrictive zoning, is a major driver of the decline of social mobility, “the largest and least remarked change in America of the last 50 years.” Building on Appelbaum's argument, Demsas said that exclusionary housing policies have shifted mobility from a widespread opportunity to a privilege for the affluent and well-educated. “Most Americans no longer stand to gain by moving toward the places in this country that offer them the greatest opportunities — the greatest professional opportunities, the best education for their children,” said Demsas, author of the 2024 book On the Housing Crisis: Land, Development, Democracy. Instead, they move toward affordability, she said, which deepens inequality and limits their potential for economic advancement. The conversation, held in March 2025, was moderated by Paul Pierson, a UC Berkeley professor of political science and director of the Berkeley Economy and Society Initiative (BESI). Japan has a wonderful year end tradition where the entire house is given a massive clean up. Dust is dispatched, junk is devolved and everything is made shipshape.  We need to do the same with our business and I don't mean cleaning up your desk.  We have two types of people working for us.  There are those who receive a salary of some dimension, be they full time or part-time and then there are those who get paid for their services.  Some of these services are delivered regularly throughout the year.  Others are intermittent, on a needs basis.  Regardless, we need to take a good look at these every year to make sure they are still fit for purpose. As a training company, we have some regular suppliers.  Our landlord charges us rent for the space we use and that lease pops up every two years.  Regardless of the economy, the office space vacancy rate, the consumer price index or any other intergalactic factors, the numbers always go up at renewal time.  It is no good finding ourselves at renewal time and thinking “maybe I should have investigated if there were more appropriately priced alternatives”.  Too late by that time, because it takes quite a while to find the size of space you need, in the location and configuration you require, at a number that makes sense.  Better to engage a real estate broker early to start telling you what the alternatives are so that when the time comes you can have some choices available.  That data is also a potential bargaining chip in the arm wrestle for the next two years of tenant penal servitude. Another key player is your accountant.  If you outsource your accounting to a firm, they will receive the data from your people and then get into a P&L and Balance Sheet format that you can come to terms with.  It also enables someone externally to see what are the patterns of spending and spot any anomalies.  Japanese staff are very honest.  However, like staff in other countries, they can find themselves in the newspaper for embezzling vast sums from their employers, sustained over breathtaking amounts of time. If you need an English speaking accountant, we are now fishing in a very small pond.  This tends to mean that we lock someone in to do the books and we just keep them forever.  We all seek an equilibrium comfort point.  We get the service, we are happy with it and we are generally too busy to investigate if we can better it.  Once a year, list up some accounting service delivery alternatives and have a conversation about what they offer.  Existing suppliers can become robotic in their delivery of their services and they have pruned their services down to the minimum necessary to maximise their return.   It might be a good time to see if you can maximise your return instead. In our case, we need things designed and printed, because we distribute flyers to clients and training manuals to class participants.  I am using the same printing company now which I have used for over ten years.  I know there are other companies who are slightly cheaper, but I need high quality service, delivered at speed. Being able to get things designed very quickly is something I value highly and will pay more for that service.  If that service was diminished then there would be a reason to change.  The point here though is, I need to keep track of the size of the disparity between what I pay and what they deliver.  I can't just go to sleep at the wheel and keep using the same folk because I am too busy to know the relative price, quality and scope of the service I am receiving. Labor lawyers do well here in Japan.  The regulations are changing, there is government pressure to not have unpaid overtime and numerous arcane labor rules abound.  Our labor lawyer is a pretty good businessman and signed my firm up on a monthly retainer.  I took my COO's advice on this retainer, though I had my doubts.   I reviewed that service need and that retainer and guess what?  After I cut it, there has been no difference in what we needed as a service.  Instead, we are saving that money every month  now.  Maybe at one point there was a point.  My point though is, don't let these things just drift along, without making a conscious decision to decide if the service is really what you still need or not.  End of the year clean up time is a good time to survey new potential providers and clean up unneeded service expenses too.

Today we are discussing the Strawberry Festival in Stilwell, Oklahoma. The Stilwell Strawberry Festival is the longest continuous running event in Oklahoma. It's an event held the second Saturday in May, which celebrates the fruit that put us on the map - strawberries. Stilwell Foods once was the place that froze the delicious berries, grown over many acres across the county, and for sale at grocery stores. Stilwell Kiwanis Club started the event, which began in 1947 and was a competition with each of the farms entering one of their berry pickers for the title of Strawberry Festival queen. Today the queen must be from the county and that contest is held in the spring. Friday evenings of the Festival weekend now offers Stilwell's Got Talent. Following the competition a band performed last year. Saturday is a full day of fun for families and everyone. The morning begins early with a 5-K run, and includes a parade with marching bands, crowning of the Strawberry Queen, strawberry judging and a huge strawberry auction fund-raiser, live music, pony rides for kids, and tons of arts and crafts vendors. A carnival sets up on Wednesday and runs through Saturday night, and the rodeo is a highlight of the weekend. The City of Stilwell, Oklahoma is home to global manufacturing, the longest consecutively running event in the state - the Strawberry Festival, parks, walking trails, biking trails, recreation, rivers, lakes and a 4,300 acre reserve, Hunt Mill Hollow Ranch.
