Born in the Piney Woods of east Texas, Michael Mayes has had a lifelong interest in the strange, unusual, and mysterious. Growing up in Big Thicket country, he heard tales of the ghost lights, wildmen, and black panthers said to haunt the woods in his corner of southeast Texas. As an adult, Michael has endeavored to get to the bottom of some of these mysteries. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the North American Wood Ape Conservancy (NAWAC) and actively participates in their efforts. Michael is likely best known for his research on the legendary black panthers believed by many rural residents of Texas and the American South to roam the swamps, marshes, woods, and bottomlands of this country. His book Shadow Cats: The Black Panthers of North America (Anomalist Books) thoroughly explores the phenomenon and has garnered positive reviews across the board.Michael is also the author of Patty: A Sasquatch Story, a self-published children's book based on the the Patterson-Gimlin film footage of a putative sasquatch captured in October of 1967. The book features beautiful illustrations by Arkansas-based artist, Robert Swain.Michael has been featured on numerous podcasts and radio programs. He appeared on the A&E Network program The Lowe Files and has written for San Antonio television station KSAT's animated "Haunted South Texas Folklore" feature series.Michael explores the myths, folklore, and legends of Texas and North America on his Texas Cryptid Hunter blog. The blog has received more than two million page views since its inception.Michael has worked as a teacher of Texas History and football/basketball coach in the Killeen ISD for nearly 30 years. He has retired from his coaching duties and hopes that decision will free up more time for writing.Click that play button, and let's unravel the mysteries of the UNTOLD! I always hesitate to create “must read” book lists, but at my drill weekend this month I did just that. The situation is that one of my NCOs is interested in commissioning. They've already completed their degree, so what's left for them to do now is their application and oral interview. To help them prepare, I put together a list of AFIs and books for them to read.(Purchasing these books via the links below may result in a small commission and is a great way to support the show. Robert Swain joins the show and give us the REAL! You don't want to miss this show!
For the past 50 years, Robert Swain has dedicated his career to a rigorous study of color sensations and their effect on the human experience. Swain’s paintings offer visual, cognitive, and sensuous experiences, while elevating our understanding of color phenomenon and perception. This heightened awareness of seeing and unique experience of feeling color occurs when Swain’s works are viewed in person with attentive, patient observation. Perceptual effects will begin to emerge slowly, rearranging themselves as the constant flow of color’s energy changes and moves in response to Swain’s compositions and palettes. Robert Swain, Color: Theory and Affect, on view December 9, 2017 – January 20, 2018 at the Gallery’s newest venue in Harlem, located at 211 East 121st Street, New York, NY 10035,
New York-based artist Gloria Klein was an early member of the Pattern and Decoration movement in the 1970s. She was an active participant in the artist’s co-operative Criss-Cross, which was co-founded by Clark Richert and included George Woodman, Marilyn Nelson, Dee Shapiro and Robert Swain, among others. Her work was frequently featured in their avant-garde publication, Criss-Cross Art Communications. Klein’s rigorous and colorful geometric abstract paintings are based on her own mathematical system for dividing and organizing her canvases and systematically distributing colors to create stunning and detailed compositions.
