When I heard about Karen Witemeyer doing fairy tales in 19th-century Texas, I knew this would be genius. But when I heard about Cloaked in Beauty, a mashup of Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty, her genius took on new proportions. Listen in to see why. note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. A girl with a fortune and someone eager to kill her to get it? That might sound familiar, but nope... Witemeyer has taken a whole new take on both fairy tales, and I love it. EEEP! Not only that, but we're looking at at least one more book--based on Beauty and the Beast. And... we got a sneak peek at her next series... The Secret Society of Spinsters. Is that not the most genius idea ever? I can't wait! Cloaked in Beauty by Karen Witemeyer In the heart of the Piney Woods of Texas, Letty Hood has spent the last fifteen years of her life hidden away with her grandmother to escape the deadly schemes of an uncle who wants her dead. Now, with her twenty-first birthday on the horizon, she is forced to accept the escort of a stranger and return to Houston in secret so she can claim a birthright that will make her one of the wealthiest women in Texas. If she lives long enough to inherit. Pinkerton agent Philip Carmichael has one duty: get the Radcliffe heiress home alive. Expecting a spoiled girl, Philip is surprised to encounter a woman of rare strength with a kind soul and keen wit. As they journey together, Letty's resilience wins his admiration, breaking through his hardened cynicism. Yet the threat to Letty grows more menacing with every mile, and Philip fears that keeping her out of harm's way may be just as impossible as keeping her out of his heart. "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Sleeping Beauty" entwine for a romantic fairy tale retelling that explores the power of true love conquering even the darkest of nights. On this episode of The Show About Stuff! The Stephen Davis Show, I have a wonderful conversation with the fifth president, Dr Will Crossley, of the 117 year old boarding Piney Woods School. In July 2014, he returned to Piney Woods as the first alumnus to serve in this capacity. A trained University of Chicago and Harvard educator, he is also a lawyer and Civil Rights expert, having served as a Senior Advisor in the Office for Civil Rights at the US Department of Education for President Barack Obama. His bully and outgoing personality make this a truly memorable, informative yet funny episode! Enjoy!!!Produced, directed, edited and hosted by Stephen E Davis.
Drawing on the ancient legend of Romulus and Remus, Thoreau unearths the primal tension between wildness and civilization with his famous declaration: “In Wildness is the preservation of the World.” In this episode of The Peripatetics, we journey through the mythic origins of Rome, explore its eventual fall, and come face to face with the wild forces that shape individuals and empires. Along the way, I share personal reflections on my childhood at the edge of the Pineywoods in Texas, questioning whether any wildness remains within us in an increasingly domesticated world. Transcripts of all episodes are available here. Find Trey on Instagram. Episode Themes Include: The Tension Between Wildness and Civilization: The episode delves into how wildness provides the raw strength needed for civilizations to rise, but also contains the seeds of their eventual downfall. This theme explores how the primal forces of nature and humanity are both essential and destructive, depending on how they're wielded. The Paradox of Wildness: Wildness is presented as a contronym—simultaneously representing freedom and danger, nurturing and chaos. This duality is central to understanding how wildness functions in both nature and civilization, as well as in our individual lives. The Loss of Wildness in the Modern World: There's a personal reflection on whether the wildness within us has been lost due to the domestication of modern life. This mirrors the broader story of Rome, where civilization grows disconnected from its wild roots, ultimately leading to its vulnerability. The Cycle of Rise and Fall: Rome's mythic origins and eventual fall illustrate a broader truth about the cyclical nature of history—civilizations and individuals are nourished by wildness, but they often lose their way as they seek control, leading to their decline. Reconnecting with Wildness: The episode questions how we can rediscover the wildness within us—whether by exploring natural environments or through our everyday interactions with the untamed aspects of life. This theme invites a deeper reflection on how we can cultivate a balance between wild and civilized impulses. The Role of Nature as Teacher: Throughout the episode, nature is depicted not just as a force to be controlled or feared, but as a guide and nurturer—offering insights into the essence of humanity and the importance of humility in the face of natural forces. Join us as we delve into the deep connections between nature, culture, and identity, revealing how the untamed world continues to shape our inner and outer landscapes. About The Show Inspired by the ancient tradition of walking philosophers — from Aristotle and his followers to Thoreau and Nietzsche — who walked as a way to engage deeply with their thoughts and ideas, The Peripatetics wanders through th e thoughts of great thinkers in nature, art, literature, and philosophy as they intersect with the simple, transformative act of walking. In season 1, we are discussing Henry David Thoreau's definitive essay on the subject of walking, connecting it with wisdom from a wide swath of philosophic tradtions which share his devotion to achieving clarity and peace through movement. Whether you're a fellow walker, someone looking for a bit of tranquility, or just curious about how a good walk can change your perspective, you're in the right place. May your path be smooth and your pace steady. About The Host Trey Hill is a filmmaker who cut his teeth as a photographer and one-man-band storyteller for non-profits and NGOs, work which carried him around the world as he sought to expose the inner light present in some of the planet's most overlooked people. He also spent 10 seasons in the NHL as team photographer for the Dallas Stars and has, for the better part of the last decade, directed TV commercials for global brands, working with household names, musicians, sports heroes, and politicians. In 2019, his feature-length debut, the documentary LOUD KRAZY LOVE about Korn's Brian “Head” Welch, premiered on Showtime.

Chris Edwards, simply put, is a singer-songwriter rooted in the deep Pineywoods of East Texas. With a suitcase full of influences ranging from the old-time folk and country he grew up with (thanks to his grandparents' record collection) to more recent Texas troubadours like Robert Earl Keen into rockier territory like the Old 97's, Chris Edwards' blend of catchy melodies and literate lyrics prove that he is a songwriter, first and foremost, focusing on "just writing good songs." We enjoyed getting to sit down and have a conversation with Chris via Zoom. We learned a lot about his music, his approach to songwriting, what he loves about music and his new album, Homebrew, which is coming out on June 28th. In “How Pineywoods Cattle Bucks Big Beef,” Gravy producer Stephanie Burt takes listeners out to the rolling pastures of the South to meet Pineywoods cattle, a breed that's been grazing in the Southern region of the United States since the 1500s. The cow that some see as old fashioned is being considered in new ways when it comes to farming in the twenty-first century. Beef is big business in the U.S. In 2022, the country's beef consumption was the highest it's been since 2010, and the industry prizes big cows for efficient processing and big bottom lines. And this is despite the rise in what overall is termed “plant-based meat alternatives,” a response to the argument that raising cattle the way most American ranchers do, with mass production methods that don't take into account the health of the land, is a contributor to climate change. But not all cows are built the same, and one rare breed is gaining attention for its adaptability to the Southern environment. Pineywoods is well suited to the growing use of regenerative farming methods that are aiming to address beef-raising climate questions. It can positively impact a farm's ecosystem instead of harming it. Plus, it has an ability to withstand hot summers. And it tastes delicious. In this episode, Burt talks to D. Phillip Sponenberg, professor of Pathology and Genetics in the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech, to find out what makes Pineywoods perfectly suited to the American South. She also introduces listeners to three cattle ranchers experienced with the breed: Cristiaan Steenkamp of BDA Farms in Uniontown, Alabama; Will Harris of White Oak Pastures in Bluffton, Georgia; and Mike Hansen of Ozark Akerz, a small farm in Coleridge, North Carolina. Together, they explain how Pineywoods contributes to the larger ecosystem of the South and how industry norms present barriers to its growth. Finally, chef Scott Peacock of Marion, Alabama, describes the distinctive flavor of Pineywoods beef on the plate. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the previous episode we traveled back to a time when the Pineywoods featured mammoths and saber toothed tigers. Then we worked our way forward through the arrival of the first humans and their indigenous successors. Today we'll pick up the story at the arrival of first Europeans. Conservationist Jim Neal will tell us what the European presence meant - not only for the region's native inhabitants but also for the flora and fauna of the Pineywoods.
The Pineywoods is a forested area in Eastern Texas and in the West Gulf Coastal Plain (a very wide stretch of Gulf coast that extends from the Mississippi all the way to the Lower Rio Grande Valley). To Houstonians the Pineywoods is just a day trip away. Today conservationist Jim Neal introduces us to the region. He tells us of its trees and of Caddo Lake, which is the only natural lake in Texas. Then he takes us back in time to the Pleistocene, when a huge ice sheet covered North America and the wooly mammoth roamed the coastal plain. What was the region like, back then? What did it take for the regions early humans to succeed? Jim Neal has answers.
